    I have been doing photography full time since January and most recently I accepted a full time job as a project manager for a new company. In this video I go over some thoughts on shooting full time and why going back to a full time job outside of photography was the best thing for me right now. Check it out!

    I am a senior photographer, and am retired now. But I shot nothing but events during my full time job as a communication operator for the Dept. of Corrections. The things that you have discussed are very important and essential to being successful. Health insurance, consistent income and structure. Now that I am retired I have the essentials to go full time in this profession. I still mainly due events of all sorts. I find that fashion and the Instagram world is really redundant. I make money doing group and family oriented shoots that are still pretty popular in most communities. I thank you Mr. Osborne for your truth and transparency. It is not enough of that going on today. I wish you great health and success at whatever you choose to do. After all we all should know what is best for us as individuals.

    Great honest video. I’m doing the side gig with weddings, seniors and families. One thing also is it’s a BUSINESS. You can’t just go in debt buying all the fancy bodies and lenses you want. It just makes more expenses for you. I’ve started with minimal investment, not the most ideal lenses etc. However, I don’t have credit card payments for my business. My only expenses are websites and adobe. Do I wish I had the best equipment now... yes...but if I’m going to be profitable, that stuff has to come in time and paid through earnings. It’s a lot more risky if you decide to become a wedding photographer and go drop $10k into it. There are those that do that.

    Commendable and insightful. I am a program/project manager myself. I am very passionate about photography, like all other photographers. I started my photography journey late in life and I have long reached the conclusion that photography alone would not support my lifestyle, based on my current earning. I am engagement manager, I teach program management at a university level and I work on Saturdays as a photographer, specifically capture images of new borns in the hospital. My strategy is to strength my photography skills now, with the anticipation that photography will serve as supplemental income once I retire. Again great insight!

    This was a great video. Currently photography is my side gig too, and I felt the same way, about if I were younger. But I'm 41yrs old and I have a whole family...a wife and two children. Full-time photography sounds good, and I won't say it's not possible, but I have to be wise about it.

    Great video! I am a Photography Hobbyist and never had plans to pursue photography full time for many of the reasons you mentioned but also because I like my 9-5 (Accounting/Business Analyst). I found your channel fairly recently because I was looking for tips on shooting Events. I loved your content and subscribed to your channel. Wishing you the Best of Luck with your new job and keep on helping Hobbyist like myself become better photographers!

    I’ve been doing photography for a while and most people do not understand how hard it is. I’ve had a lot of tough months but with each one that passed I reach a new level and goal. This is actually my second stab at it again. I quit my job once. Tried to do full time photography and wasn’t ready. Now that I have a studio and more ways to make money off photography it helps but still hard nonetheless. Great video 👍🏾.

Reception will be at a larger venue,also with high ceilings, but better lighting, but in general I have been facing issues using flash. I normally shoot outdoors. Any advice??

    Thank you for keeping it real for these folks. You are the only one that I've seen to be truely honesty. I too like Tony Poaches am retired. I have military benefits to fall back on. RUclipsrs make it seem glamorous but nothing about the other side of the coin. For example, if you get hurt your income takes a huge hit.
    Thank you and blessings in the future.

      Yeah my goal is always to be transparent and to keep it absolutely 💯 when it comes to photography and the business behind it. I really do wish more of the famous youtubers would step up to the plate and be more real instead of trying to poach off some new gear they are sponsored to promote. I’m a project manager and I absolutely love having the dual income especially when the photography gigs slow up from time to time. Thanks for watching and providing your feedback.

  • @samcaple8197

    Jason; I have held down a separate job as an IT consultant for the last 35 years. Independent consulting has allowed me to have some control over my schedule. It has given me the income to live and raise a family and pay for the gear I "need" to do the event / wedding and fine art work I want to do. It definitely has it's advantages. Definitely not all downside. Wedding and event photography has given me the bucks to pay for the gear I "want" for the fine art photography. Embrace it man...be happy.

    • @JasonOsbornePhotography

      Sam Caple very happy the dual income is a blessing!

    • @samcaple8197
      @samcaple8197 4 года назад

      @@JasonOsbornePhotography Jason, As you said, It is actually more like dual income streams. Let me explain. As a contract consultant it was a service business just like a contract photographer. I would often negotiate for 4 day weeks so I had weekends open for photography gigs (especially since most of the gigs were weekends anyway). Just like you said money had to be set aside for healthcare bills retirement, etc. And I pointed both income streams at that and to live. Now we both know that this meant 60 to 80 hour weeks and that is hard on the family. My wife started running the business after a few years and actually when my sons were older they began to help out as well; it became a family thing which kept the family thing under control. You are on the right track for the photography business as it exist now. I am much older than you and have been doing this for a long time out of necessity. But its been a great ride and can work for you over many years.

    What are your thoughts?

  • @RamaSivamani
    @RamaSivamani 2 года назад

    When it comes to providing for your family I think it also depends on your family situation. If your partner or spouse has a full time job and is a high earner then your income as a photographer combined with your partner's income fom their job may be more than enough to provide for a family. This is a different situation then if only you are generating an income and you are asked to provide for the whole family solely from you photography business. I wonder if for all the photographers who are full time and are on youtube or other platforms promoting doing photography full time are either in situations where they are in a double income household where their partners also have a full time job or if they do not have the same type of family obligations.

    • @JasonOsbornePhotography
      @JasonOsbornePhotography  2 года назад

      You make a good point, if your partner can provide for the household as well it can help. I think it comes down for the individual basis and how each persons relationship is. Personally I’m a little old school and even if my wife made a great income I would still feel the need to match that income or come close, so that we could handle the household responsibilities together and more equally. I do find that more full time photographers tend to be female while their husbands are the ones with 9-5 steady jobs. My case would be the reverse and at the time of making this video I knew we wanted to start a family soon and that an additional income and time would be needed on my part in the near future that photography wouldn’t be able to match. Not to mention benefits and insurance. I still shoot a lot of gigs even with my full time job and it’s almost like having 3 incomes now. Thanks for watching and the insight.

    What do you suggest starting out as a beginner photographer, DBA or LLC?

    • @JasonOsbornePhotography
      @JasonOsbornePhotography  2 года назад +1

      LLC, but before you do I would make sure you have the business coming in to justify the registration and business set up costs. With an LLC you get limited liability protection with a DBA you do not.
