For connecting second monitors I hear it's much better to use a docking station which gets you more connections and is safer, reliable. Well that's what I'm gonna be getting!

I set up my hdmi cable and its mirroring both screens but when i go into settings it still only detects one monitor. how do i fix this? i only have one hdmi port on my tower so i bought an hdmi splitter and plugged both hdmi cables into it then one each into both the monitors but its only mirroring the other monitor. do i have to use a different cable instead of using two hdmi cables?
I think i've just bought the wrong kind of lead. I bought a new laptop recently, a ASUS Vivobook flip 14 and i'm trying to run a second display on a Samsung monitor; like basically so i can do multiple tasks at once (like you described). But this particular laptop only has micro/mini HDMI ports and usb ports. So i bought a HDMI - HDMI micro lead/cable and connect laptop to monitor thinking that would do the job; but my laptop is not detecting it, so i guess i need to buy that other kind of lead.

I have all the right hardware - but I plugged in the monitor and it and the laptop are not seeing each other - wish you would have addressed that issue.
Do I have to connect two monitors in two different out from pc? I used one out fromnpc and used split adaptor...now I only get mirror image on the two monitor?. If I want extend the monitor do I need to connect separately?. Please advice. Thankyou.
the problem is that when i extend the displays it shows if i want to revert or keep the changes but my mouse switches to just one display and i cant move it to the other and it just automatically reverts

I extended the display and it shows 2 displays. But when I drag, say a word doc icon across to the HDMI display, it appears but when I click to open it it open up on my laptop not the HDMI display. Also when I click sense displays on my laptop is says it can't find additional displays. Can you help??

I want to game and multitask on the other screen but once I launch the game I am stuck with the mouse and keyboard for the game and can't use the second screen. Is there a solution for this. @@jmb1819 it can stop different softwares from lagging but according to me the display performance depends more on the quality of processor and I don't think you can change ram in most laptops

The split option works fine for me until I start playing the sims 4..... then the expand screen/split screen option doesn't work anymore....beacause I only can play the sims 4 and nothing more unfortunately.... How comes???.... I would love to play the sims 4 on 1 screen and use my internet browser on the other screen.....

Yeah of course, the laptop's battery will drain faster and having another screen puts a load on the CPU maybe slowing it down
