King of Fighters '94... I find this game weird presentation wise. lol But this is the very first game in the KOF series! It's time that I clear up some confusion because... The difference between the KOF series and other series like Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting are somewhat clear yet unclear. Let's Party! (Go back to past parts for other facts on that respective game) Incoming waterfall of text~ - The King of Fighters series takes place in it's VERY OWN CONTINUITY. That's right. It's the only logical conclusion when we have Art of Fighting characters crossing over with Fatal Fury characters, especially when the former takes place years before the latter! (More on that below) That means Geese and Krauser are still very much alive (as seen exclusively in the Fatal Fury Team ending of this game). However, after KOF '95, characters stop aging. For example, in KOF '94, Terry is 23 years old (like he is in Fatal Fury 3), and in KOF '95 and onwards, he's 24. Yup, he's 24 EVEN when he dons the Garou look for KOF 2003 and KOF 11 (which is where things really got confusing. T.TU). Basically, SNK deliberately did this so that the characters could be reused in each installment without having to worry about aging them up each game. This is made very apparent when after KOF 2003, the games stopped being released in a yearly fashion as KOF 11 wasn't released until 2005 (2006 for the US). - As I'm sure I've said before, the KOF series was originally meant to be a crossover between Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting, but SNK decided to make an original team exclusive to the KOF series, creating the Hero/Japan Team (Kyo, Benimaru, Daimon); as well as including other SNK characters like the Ikari Warriors and Psycho Soldier (and later on, Samurai Shodown and Pachislots/Pachinko and Metal Slug and the like). As a result, it is practically mandatory for Fatal Fury star and Art of Fighting star, Terry Bogard and Ryo Sakazaki to appear in EVERY SINGLE KOF INSTALLMENT. Terry even brings this up every now and then about him having a "perfect attendance". - To be even more specific, the crossover game was actually going to be a beat 'em up called "Survivor". I'd like to think that KOF All-Stars is similar to the original idea. (At least, based on the gameplay I've seen on the stream last night. I know little on KOF All-Stars other than it's art...and how beautiful Terry looks. lmao)
- When adding in characters for KOF '94, the Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting characters were chosen to appeal to Adults while the newer KOF characters (like Kyo) were chosen for a more younger audience. - Rightfully so, the gameplay of early KOF games was based on Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting with some original ideas like the sidestep/dodge. Elements from FF include infinite supers when your lifebar is low and dashing. Elements from AOF include the ability to charge your meter and unleash a special move that way. - Due to the KOF series' origin, Terry and Ryo are seen as fierce yet friendly rivals throughout the KOF series. In future games, the two would have unique win quotes for each other. - Again, as stated before, KOF has many games and has a rather well-invested storyline. However, some of the games are not canon. This includes KOF 98, KOF 2002, and KOF 12 which are called "Dream Matches" and thus have no real storyline. This also includes KOF Neo Wave and the Maximum Impact series which are more like spin-offs (but non-canon all the same). Despite this, Maximum Impact 1 and 2 were sorta trying to connect some dots with Garou and what Rock was doing, but that's for another time, I suppose. - Oh Rugal Bernstein. He's likely the #1 guy you think of when you hear "SNK Boss Syndrome", and reasonably so! He was created with the intent of being the "cheapest bastard ever". He was intented to copy any move he saw once buuut that put quite a strain on the Arcade system so they had to limit Rugal's copied moves to being a reflector attack similar to Athena's and using the Reppuken and Kaiser Wave; moves from Geese and Krauser respectively. However, he has the dreadful Genocide Cutter which, depending on how he hits you in this game, can take half or ALL of your health! But Rugal's WORSE version has to be in KOF 2002 Unlimited Match. What makes him so bad? He's cheap for one, but that's nothing new. No, what makes him terrible is that you only have ONE SHOT TO BEAT HIM. That's right, if you fail, that's a Game Over. The game even warns you to "Do the best you can!" (No joke!) Everyone HATES this version of Rugal for a reason. - Here's some backstory on Rugal: He's a powerful arms dealer who's feared by many, even fellow politics and fighters around the world. He has the _lovely_ hobby of dumping liquid metal on his defeated opponents to use as a trophy (more on that below~). A 25 year old Rugal fought against fellow Orochi Hakkesshu member and resident "Kokudesuka" asshole, Goenitz (you see him in KOF '96) where he lost a fight against him. Goenitz took out Rugal's eye with one strike but Rugal survived the attack. As a reward, Goenitz gave Rugal a bit of Orochi's power, but he warned him not to use 100% of it. Rugal now has a bionic eye, btw. Years after that, Rugal tested his new powers on a base in Brazil where he killed everyone except for Heidern. Rugal fought Heidern and took his eye (guess he was pissed about losing his own eye lol) but for some asshole reason, Rugal decided to take Heidern's wife and child instead of Heidern's life. As his empire grew, Rugal recruited Mature and Vice as his secretary; Mature appearing in KOF '94, and Vice appearing in KOF '95; both appearing in KOF '96 as full-fledged fighters and also members of the Hakkesshu. - Because Max didn't play KOF '95, the story details I talk about also relate to KOF '95. Anyway, Rugal canonically lost to Kyo's team in both KOF '94. Despite blowing up his aircraft carrier, the Black Noah, Rugal survived because of the Orochi Power. Nonetheless, Rugal was pissed off and wanted revenge on Kyo and his team in KOF '95. He forced Kyo to fight his brainwashed father, Saiysu, and when he failed, Rugal decided to enhance himself with the Orochi Power, becoming the awful OMEGA RUGAL... But he still lost regardless. He decided to use 100% of Orochi's power... and completely forgot that Goenitz warned him NOT to do that so Rugal is dead. That is Rugal's canonical death and any other appearance in the KOF series is non-canon... EXCEPT for KOF 14~ KOF 14's weird boss, Verse, had a bunch of souls inside him, including various bosses of KOF and even Samurai Shodown. Rugal is one of the souls and it's possible he's been resurrected following Verse's demise... Only time will tell though. - Remember how Rugal likes preserving bodies with liquid metal? He actually has Guile from Street Fighter as a trophy as Max noticed. lol They would even call back to this in Capcom vs SNK 2 (I don't know about CVS1) if you pit a match between Guile and Rugal. - I don't think it's a fact that a lot of people know Terry from the KOF series rather than the Fatal Fury series, but a lot of people make that error. It's only natural though, since Terry has appeared in WAY more KOF games than he has in his own series. Not necessarily a bad thing though. Terry is still relevant obviously; relevant enough to get a Smash Invitation~ - The ONLY reason the Fatal Fury Team in KOF '94 are based in Italy is because of Andy. lol It's a callback to Andy's stage in Fatal Fury 2/Fatal Fury Special and as a result their theme song is a rearrangement of Andy's theme (called "Pasta". Not kidding). Throughout the song, you can hear some say "Come on Red" or "Let's go Red". They're likely referring to Terry. lol - I have absolutely no idea why, but KOF '94 really loves the audio from Digital Underground - Gutfest '89. Japan Team, USA Team, Rugal's 2nd Theme all have audio from this where you hear the following: "You can hear behind me now that uh I think they called blue death." or you'll hear "Yeah you can hear that they're having a ball and a hell of a time down at gutfest this year." Obviously, games that remixed the '94 songs (as done in KOF '98) don't include the voice tracks. - Here's a really important tip for this game: The strength of your attacks depend on the length of your special meter. If you want to dish out more damage, you need to charge the meter. Get it up to MAX CHARGE and you can probably kill your opponent with 2-4 moves or so~ I tried telling Max this in the stream multiple times so I hope he actually saw my tips! XD - Here's a...weird one: Um, so Fatal Fury 3 wasn't made yet, so Terry's voice clips came from Fatal Fury 2 / Fatal Fury Special. Okay, that's good. But... Kim Kaphwan has some of Terry's voice clips for some odd reason! Listen to the sound he makes when he's hurt! I think that's all I'll say on this game! On to the next video when it's uploaded (or it's already uploaded, go check it out~)

This was like my first fighting game i had to myself. It was a relief to see Max struggle against Rugal, the man ruined my childhood. So it wasnt just me who suffered.
To be fair, he's a japanese person going against an american football player, basketball player, and a heavyweight boxer. All of which are big-bodied athletes.
I like how the fighters' team partners react to them hitting and being hit as well as to wether they win or lose; and if they lose themselves they too react while looking beat up. Those little details are what make old games so enjoyable, immersive ans endearing.
As a Mexican I would say that... yeah, you are right with your analogy. 94 = SF II 97 = SF II Turbo 2002 = Third Strike Although 98 is better than 97 in most of Mexican people opinion :)
Ah kof 94...got a lot of history with this specific kof game, from seeing how crowded that small game room was when it first got put in there to the roars of excitement from the onlookers and players alike during the battles of the best players who lived in the neighborhood, it was the definition of a harlem arcade of the mid 90's. Good times
I’m really enjoying this series, especially as someone who many times just kicks his shoes off after work and tries to tackle old arcade ladders on his PC. Thank God for an insert coin button and infinite continues! lol
Not to mention how he’s the ultimate cuckold of KOF. You know you need to step your game up when you have babes such as Angel and Luong call you out on your cowardice to ask Athena out.
Let's not forget the numerous times when Sie actually does ask Athena out and she interprets him asking her out on date as him wanting to hang out and just be friends.
There are two things I took away from this game: frustration and the hilariously bad translation. "All of you are just big!" What does that even mean? XD
KOF 94 is basically the game where all the characters are bosses even at level 1 not to mention level 7 where the very first opponent almost has god mode and destroy your whole team like If he's Rugal
LOVED KOF 94 in the arcades....ill never forget when it first came out. My go to teams were the Ikari team, Fatal fury team and AOF team. It was a damn good feeling finishing people off at the arcades with the desperation moves haha
Yes The KoF '94 was Athena's fighting game debut! The pink hair & school attire she has in later KoF games was her attire back in '86 when she was one of the characters in Psycho Soldier.
You're correct in Athena in that she was a popular character with her own video game franchise separate from the KOF series. I believe KOF 94 was when she was introduced into the roster alongside her other two team mates. She continued to still have her own independent titles aside from the fighting scene.

me too!! The first fighting game I played was Fatal Fury: the king of fighters!! SNK became popular when Capcom vs SNK came out!!

I love how Max just gets annoyed faster and faster at the computer with each game
The announcer straight up says Terry Burger.
Nick Clark “Basus” aka a very Engrish way of saying “Versus”
I hear Tally Borgar every time
I heard Terry Burter
Well, he's american
Latin Guy: Listen kid... i think you be more confortable in that place.....
Max: "in the capcom weenie hut?"

You cannot hide what's inside.
When capcom vs SNK was first announced I creamed my pants because finally 2 of my favorite franchises were callaborating!! the first SNK fighting game I ever played was fatal fury special!!
The only hard SF boss is Gill, but his difficulty is compared to Rugal 1st form or Krizalid 1st form.
@@SenatorArmstrong2018 Magneto.
I see he’s on level 1. Max definitely wasn’t ready for this classic.
I don't blame him for playing these on lower difficulty. The AI can be nuts
Casual_Remy I really don’t.
I bought '98 recently and god damn these games are hard as nails, had to put the ai to 1 as well dude.
Jake Jutras 98’s A.I. I felt was much fairer than 94
KOF 94 sucks balls. The AI cheats alot and the controls are clunky as hell. KOF 95 improved a little bit but 96 is where they improved it massively
This was like my first fighting game i had to myself. It was a relief to see Max struggle against Rugal, the man ruined my childhood. So it wasnt just me who suffered.
“All of you are just big!”
Joe is a size queen, apparently.
To be fair, he's a japanese person going against an american football player, basketball player, and a heavyweight boxer. All of which are big-bodied athletes.
He just means they're all size and no substance.
Box Tank! I get that. The size queen line was a joke.
@@ShinRyojin I know, and it is hillarious, just clarifying for the audience who don't know that term or might think that quote made NO sense.
Box Tank! Oh, now I gotcha. Thanks for the compliment. SNK engrish is comedy gold! Lol
I like how the fighters' team partners react to them hitting and being hit as well as to wether they win or lose; and if they lose themselves they too react while looking beat up. Those little details are what make old games so enjoyable, immersive ans endearing.
"The real answer is to not play"

Fighrers ➡ Fighters
What Andy says: Hi Sho Ken.
What I hear: Bishi Ken.
In my mind: Andy is the Bishonen Ken.
Good times
And this is where the kingdom of Rugal(one of the best fighting game final bosses) and many rages begins
I’m really enjoying this series, especially as someone who many times just kicks his shoes off after work and tries to tackle old arcade ladders on his PC. Thank God for an insert coin button and infinite continues! lol
19:01 hey look in the background. it's some of the people Max fought in Fatal Fury. Cool detail

Fricken Rugal just stalling for you to press a button. Lmao! I love how hes one of the earliest villains but by far the most memorable.
This whole Terry Legacy has been really entertaining.
27:47 We are the S T R O N G E R S T !
This game should've been classified as fighting/horror.
My favourite Terry Bogard attack is "BANDICOOT!"
It's "burn knuckle", but sounds like bandicoot 😄
Just wait until Max Plays 2002 and Neowave, It sounds even more like Bandicoot there
I love how Sie Kensou has this crazy war with a supervillain team that never gets any focus. He is the Ron Stoppable of KOF.
@@derrickhaggard I wouldn't be surprised if she's doing it on purpose. Since she's an idol, she can't date anyone or it will ruin her career.
This play-thourgh has become "The Andy Legacy"
There are two things I took away from this game: frustration and the hilariously bad translation. "All of you are just big!" What does that even mean? XD
"You're strong but you lack skill."
Or that's my interpretation at least-
PhantomStrider I think it means that the USA team had nothing but their size. No skill, just size. 👌🏼
Its funny how i clicked on Max video his advertisement for King Of Fighters Pops up!... First time i never skipped AD

You're correct in Athena in that she was a popular character with her own video game franchise separate from the KOF series. I believe KOF 94 was when she was introduced into the roster alongside her other two team mates. She continued to still have her own independent titles aside from the fighting scene.
I just loved how you were utterly and totally DESTROYED by Rugal! Looking forward to see you playing Garou
