The King of Fighters '98. This is a game that I'm sure a lot of people know of~ If not the original arcade version, then definitely the remake called "Ultimate Match" (not to be confused with the remake of KOF 2002 called "Unlimited Match"). The original version of KOF 98 was subtitled "Dream Match Never Ends", but is called "The Slugfest" everywhere else in the world. The (original) name doesn't lie: This game is a Dream Match, meaning this is non-canon. Personally, I like to think that this game is a celebration of the Orochi Saga, just as KOF 2002 is a celebration of the NESTS Saga (The Tales of Ash Saga doesn't get that kind of celebration), as the games are a get-together of most of the cast from their respective Sagas, even those who are canonically dead (like the New Faces Team... Yeah, they died in '97).
THE KING OF FIGHTERS! *Insert '98 Character Select Theme*
- The original arcade version of '98 included most of the Teams from '94 to '98 (they even brought the USA Team back as the American Sports Team!). However, the '98 Remake, KOF '98 Ultimate Match, brought back EVERYONE from the past games including the Edit Team (Eiji from '95, Kasum from '96, and Shingo from '97), the Orochi Team (Orochi version of the New Faces Team), the '96 Boss Team (Geese, Krauser, Mr. Big), and bosses like the Orochi versions of Iori and Leona, Goenutz, and Orochi himself. The cast is all here in the remake!
- The Dreamcast version and the remake have the option to have the original soundtrack and the arranged soundtrack (however, the remake also has brand new tracks). They also have the option to switch between the original 2D Backgrounds and the 3D Backgrounds.
- Both the original and remake of '98 have "Alternate Versions" of particular characters. For example, you can play as Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 versions of Terry, Andy, Mai, Billy, Yamazaki, Blue Mary, and Geese (the latter three are only in the remake).
- Both the original and remake have "Special Edit Teams". Playing as these Special Edit Teams allows for special ending screens. This is continued in KOF 2002 Unlimited Match. For example, playing as Terry, Kyo, and Ryo creates the "SNK Heroes Team" (called "Assembled Heroes Team" in the remake)
- KOF '98 has a portable version called "The King of Fighters R-2". '97 also had a portable version called "R-1". Both of these games were for the Neo Geo Pocket Color and the sprites were "deformed" versions of the cast. This same art style would be applied to the game after R-2, "SNK vs. Capcom: The Match of the Millennium".
- The Dreamcast version of '98 is called "KOF Dream Match '99" because it was released in 1999. This has caused great confusion to the actual KOF 99, especially when that game was ported to the Dreamcast.
- For a long time, SNK had an artist named Shinkiro. He provided cover illustrations and character designs for various SNK games like Fatal Fury, KOF, Art of Fighting, and even Metal Slug. However, SNK went bankrupt in 2001 and he was laid off. However, his final contribution to a "SNK game" would be in Capcom vs SNK 2 where he provided artwork for the S-N-K Grooves (compared to the C-A-P Grooves, where artwork was provided by Capcom artist, Kinu Nishimura). Since then, Shinkiro has moved to Capcom where he still works at to this day. He's provided artwork for Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Resident Evil, and even Devil May Cry 5.
- Despite Shinkiro's departure from SNK, he had some "successors" such as Eisuke Ogura and Hiroaki; the latter who is considered to be "Shinkiro's protege" due to his quasi-realistic art style. Hiroaki provided promotional and cover artwork for KOF '98 UM and KOF 2002 UM while Ogura provided the main character illustrations for the "newcomers" of '98 UM that highly resemble Shinkiro's character art for the original '98 release.
- I totally forgot to mention this (I think?), but '94 actually got it's own remake called KOF '94 Rebout. It had an animated intro and everything, and Hiroaki was the main illustrator of that game. The sprites were... "HD-fied"... and not good at all. lol But it was still a nice effort, I suppose (and the animated intro's pretty cool along with the new character art by Hiroaki~ The Rugal art has Rugal, Mature, and his pet panther named Rodem).
- Hiroaki has simply done plenty of artwork for the KOF games, though he appears to have gotten his start with Fatal fury: Wild Ambition (for the most part, it seemed someone else did the art too?). KOF wise, he started with KOF 2000 and onwards, though he wasn't always the main illustrator. Often that went to other SNK artists like Falcoon (who is responsible for the start of the Ash Saga and the creation of the Maximum Impact series) and Nona (illustrated for KOF 2001 and 2002).
- KOF '98 got two light novels but, of course, they aren't canon. I don't know what's going on, but one of the light novels focuses on Shingo's adventures through the '98 tournament. It appears he teams up with Chizuru and Benimaru (the latter seem to have feelings for one another and that... MIGHT be canon, actually). I won't lie, from the artwork I've seen, I like the interactions between Shingo, Chizuru, and Benimaru.
- This is the last time Chizuru will appear for a while (well, except for KOF 99 Evolution and 2000, where she's a (Secret/Extra) Striker). Rather, this is the last time Chizuru will appear as a playable character for a while. Her last playable appearance in a mainline KOF game will be KOF 2003 and storywise, she's incapacitated thanks to Ash. This didn't sit well with fans who wanted her playable again, but as SNK says, Chizuru is really only important when Orochi is involved, hence why she appeared throughout the Tales of Ash Saga and appeared in two endings of KOF 14... Though strangely enough, she was featured prominantely in some KOF '99 manga/manhua... I know little about this... Those manhuas can be strange at times...
- This is the return of Omega Rugal who looks much different than how he did in KOF '95. Regardless, '98 Omega Rugal is hard... but KOF 2002 and ESPECIALLY KOF 2002 UM Omega Rugal is much harder! "Do the best you can" indeed!
- Omega Rugal's stage and theme is a remix from '94. His stage seems to be a desolate version of the Black Noah from '94. Might be because he blew the damn thing up... and he does it again here and AGAIN in 2002 UM (he actually doesn't do it in 2002, the airship just... blows up with Rugal taken by the blast...in a rather horrifying way too lol). Actually, in '98 UM, the Black Noah will get closer to self-destructing the more rounds that are played. Nice detail!
- This is the FINAL GAME to have Teammates waiting/cheering in the background... Fun Fact though! If you're playing as Goro Daimon and you do an eathquake attack, your teammates will actually jump! (The opposing Teammates just fall on their ass) Another Fun Fact, if you have a defeated teammate or two in the background and the current character you're playing as wins, they'll actually look at you with cheer. Yes, even Iori will. lol
- The animated intro from the Dreamcast port is an unlockable extra in the remake.
- Rugal actually has two children; Adelheid, who would be a fighter, and Rose, who's...not a fighter. They own the Sky Noah, an airship. They debut in KOF 2003... Though there's a chance you don't even see them! They are only accessible through the "Bad Ending", even though they are the ones to host that year's KOF tournament. Canonically, however, the Ikari Warriors won that tournament while K's Team went to fight a brainwashed Chizuru and Mukai. Here's the thing, Adelheid is rather honorable and even cooperates with Heidern (you know, the guy who hates Rugal for taking his eye and family?). Though he's a fighter like his father, he's no where near as scummy. Rose, on the other hand, inherites her father's ruthlessness and ego, but she's not all bad though. If you beat Adelheid in KOF 2003, Rose will be distraught and angrily state that you won't escape alive and refuses to let you leave the Sky Noah, but Adelheid tells her to release you since you won fair and square... I'll have more to say about these two (mostly Adelheid) if Max plays KOF 2003 and/or KOF XI~ Fingers crossed! X)

The music being like a third of the full track before fading out grinds my gears. The PS2 remake is pretty much the only version outside the Neo Geo I care for.

KOF's arranged soundtracks are always so good; really nice advantage for the console ports. Like, try going back to the Neo Geo version of Goenitz's "Trash Head" theme, after hearing the arranged version.
KoF 98 taught me that using raw supers is a legit way to play a fighting game.
Definitely "90s in all the right ways"... You know growing up as a 90s kid was awesome. Watching cartoons and playing videogames in the 90s was special and super fun no doubt about it! Watching Max play those exact same totally epic games and simply seeing the love he has for them is fucking amazing, It brings back great memories. Watching all these videos brings a fucken smile to my face! So Max, keep doing your thing and "LET'S FUCKEN GO!!"

Max: Your exploit Works on all characters. Against Rugal you can run and, when real close, crossup him with high jump CD. If Rugal doesn't use his Fireball, he'll try to genocyde cut you but you'll be: behind him while he's still on Air or your Air CD may hit him on counter. That's the easiest way to take him to the corner. It's a little hard ar First atempt, but you win't take long tô get It. It works on Igniz and 2k2 Rugal as well. When you're choose a full screen Fireball character like ex kyo, Iori, Takuma, you can cheap damage the enemy until time runs out. Some bizarre bug makes them block ALL the C version fireballs when timed properly

Like normal commands are around since 95 and 96 as a common combo mechanic, or the fact that he mistakes "clunk" for a pretty unforgiving input window.

Your right about that him not knowing much about the commands such as chaining combos, but given he does RUclips and Twitch for a living, you could only spend so such before playing and learning the next game.

I always loved the animated intro for "Dream Match '99", i always thought it was a weird name for the DC port of '98 tho, it made it a weird situation where there was TWO KOF '99's on Dreamcast: '99 Evolution (the real KOF 99) and Dream Match '99 (a port of 98). Anyway, '98 UM is possibly my favorite KOF, i think it's pretty much perfect. A ton of characters, great gameplay, stages, music. It took everything about vanilla '98 and perfected it even further. The only other game that maybe can rival it to me is 2002 UM.
the legend yo dude, you wouldn‘t happen to know who canonically is stronger between Rugal and Geese, would you? If i remember correctly, the creators of the characters said that Rugal is their favorite Villain. But who is stronger?
God Rugal (and Nightmare Geese too maybe?) is of course ex-cluded, because they aren‘t really canon... are they?
@@sheijlalaranda6421 Well between normal Rugal (KOF '94) and Geese, the stronger of the two is most likely Rugal. He was meant by SNK to "one up" guys like Geese and Krauser, he has Geese's Reppuken and Krauser's Kaiser Wave to show this. Terry alone beat Geese multiple times (2 to be exact) and Kyo beat Rugal in KOF '94 with help from Benimaru and Goro Daimon.
Now as for Nightmare Geese, nah he isn't canon, he's just an undead powered up version of Geese. Omega Rugal IS canon tho and he took on half the cast of KOF '95 (guys like Terry, Kyo, Ryo, Athena, to name a few) and was holding his own against them too. He only lost because his body couldn't handle the strain of the orochi power anymore and he disintegrated.
So yea Rugal is the more powerful of the two. But even Rugal is pretty low on the canon boss tote pole compared to some of the bosses that come after him in the series.
Just like the only game in a similar level to 98 is 02, the only game in a similar level to 98um is 02 um. Those two tiers cant be reached by other games (at least until now).
the legend and in your opinion, who was the best Villain? Not in game difficulty or anything, but story, character, impact, design, gameplay wise and etc.
Sheijla Laranda Geese without a doubt. He was the first major villain and the creator of the KOF tournament in the first place. I always liked his design, moveset, personality, etc. Geese is the best. There are plenty of stronger crazy supernatural KOF bosses these days but I always liked how Geese was just this power hungry mafia boss type of guy.
I do like Rugal too tho, he’s a badass for sure. He’s a black market arms dealer who turns his opponents into statues and adds them to his “collection”...creepy but cool I guess. Lol
A distant third would be Krizalid (boss from KOF 99) mainly because of his design. He doesn’t have much impact in the series and is very short lived, but I think he’s one of the coolest looking bosses in the series.
These games have amazing looking backgrounds, heck the heavy anti-aliasing on the 3D objects make them fit better with the pixelart objects.

Is it just me or does it really look very weird when playing KOF with just one character ? I know the show is meant to focus on Terry but it's pretty weird to me,it doesn't even look like it's KOF 🙃
Yeah I don't get why he's playing 1 v 1 mode, it's not fun at all and it's actually pretty boring, that's cool SNK gave players the option to do that, but KOF does not feel right as a 1 v 1 type of fighter.
i think it's fine. doesn't really make a difference in kof because unlike mvc or dbfz there are no tags or support. Its technically still 1v1 but in team matches.

Dude, KoF Dream Match '99 was a port to the Dreamcast of KoF 98. And KoF Evolution was a port of KoF '99 both ports had cool extras but your thumbnail has the wrong logos. It annoys me, so if you read this can you fix it? (KoF 98 UM was a NEW version of '98 that was released on the PS2 and some arcades in the early 2000's).

Leave my mans, Shingo alone. He may be a highschooler, and a huge fanboy...but he's the man. He may not have, fireballs, secret moves like majority of everyone in the roster, but he has a heart of fighter. He puts up a fight with his bare hands, and feet being the only normal guy, even though he somewhat tries copying Kyo's moves. Still to me, he's basically an average fighting game fanboy in a fighting game.
Also playing as Shingo is awesome, it feels good when you can do critical damage, and that counter of his. He's one of my favorite characters in Kof.
I mean I like him. He won a tournament and he’s actually buff as fuck.
