Garou: Mark of the Wolves. This is the last Fatal Fury game on the Neo Geo and the last Fatal Fury game at this time. If you thought Fatal Fury 3 and the Real Bout series were graphically impressive, then you haven't seen anything yet! This game pushes the Neo Geo to it's absolute limits! This is the game that is highly comparable to Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike and it even has it's own Parry system called the "Just Defense System" but unlike 3rd Strike, Garou also has the T.O.P. System. But I'm not here to explain Game Mechanics, I'm here to talk about this game's history and stuff!
Now, are you okay? Ready or not, Buster Wolf!
    - For Fatal Fury's 15th Anniversary
, SNK released a 20 minute still pictured movie called *Garou Densetsu 15th Anniversary: Memories of Stray Wolves!* This movie takes place a bit before Garou: MOTW! It recaps the entire Fatal Fury story up until this point, including bringing back some characters who don't appear in Garou like Duck King, Blue Mary, and even Richard! It's on RUclips and fully translated, so please! Do check it out! Most of my info for these facts actually came from that movie! The art for the still-pictures were done by Ogura Eisuke and they are incredible~ (I bet ladies will love Rock's look. lol He's adorable there. XD)
    - Why is this called Garou? Well, believe it or not, "Fatal Fury" is the international name of the series. The Japanese title is actually "Garou Densetsu" which translates to "Legend of the Hungry Wolf"; in reference to how Terry is known as a Hungry Wolf throughout the series. Funnily enough though, the game IS called Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves on the Dreamcast version.
    - This game takes place 10 years after the events of Real Bout Fatal Fury as one of the openings to this game shows. After FF3, Terry adopted Rock and eventually became the "father" after Geese's death in Real Bout 1.
    - Garou's story focuses on Rock Howard's beginnings as well as Terry Bogard and the mysterious Kain R. Heinlein. Following Geese's death, Terry and Rock moved to the neighboring city known as "Second Southtown"... Yup. lol Anyway, a mysterious host is holding the new "King of Fighters: Maximum Mayhem" tournament and fighters related to old KOF contestants show up here such as the children of Kim Kaphwan, Andy's student Hokutomaru, and even Rock Howard, the son of Geese Howard. The "host" turns out to be Grant and his brother-from-another-mother, Kain R. Heinlein. The latter is the most important one here as Kain is actually Rock's Uncle! It turns out that Kain is trying to decypher Geese's will following his passing and he knows that Rock is an important key to the will and thus held the tournament to lure Rock to him. Strangely, Geese is part of the reason that Rock's mother, also Kain's sister, died and despite this Kain willingly wants Geese's will... Regardless, Rock's ending shows that he accepts Kain's offer to join him and informs Terry that he'll return when all of his accounts are settled... Cliffhanger, ladies and gentlemen. ^^;
    - There WAS going to be a "Garou 2" and was 70% completed. But the game wasn't finished, likely due to SNK's Bankruptcy in 2000. We actually got in-game idle sprites of the newcomers who would've appeared in the sequel. One of the newcomers was a student of Joe Higashi. I believe this student was female too.
    - Terry is the ONLY returning playable character from the Fatal Fury series, similar to how Ryu and Ken were the only returning fighters for SFIII: New Generation.
    - You know Rock's theme song right? Spread the Wings? Everyone loves it. Me personally, I actually prefer his KOF 14 theme, Emergence. lol But Spread the Wings uses part of the melody from a song named "Children" by Robert Miles. From what I know, the composer of Garou liked Robert Miles' music hence the intentional similarities. Though that's likely the reason Rock's theme in KOF 14 isn't Spread the Wings. Again, I prefer Emergence anyway. lol
    - Terry's Garou look would be used in KOF 2003 and KOF 11, as well as Maximum Impact... and Maximum Impact 2 but for SOME reason he's called "Wild Wolf" when he's in the Garou outfit. Wild Wolf is...another character who's just the older Terry? Eh, it's weird. Maximum Impact overall is just weird. Kinda fun, but weird nonetheless. XD But anyway, this caused great confusion "timeline wise" because Rock appears in the opening of KOF 2003 as a little kid... AND he supposedly appears as a young adult in the Fatal Fury Team of KOF 2003!? Heck, Rock has appeared in a few KOF games looking like a kid, starting with KOF 2001! They kinda goofed a bit, but I guess by KOF 14, the developers were like "SCREW IT. BRING HIM HERE!" lmao After all, since Garou, Rock has been a highly requested character for KOF. From what I know, Rock wasn't included because of "timeline reasons" or something like that, so they settled on bringing Rock to other games like CVS2 and Neo Geo Battle Coliseum.
    - Here's a fun one: During the development of KOF 99, the designer for K' (pronounced K-Dash) freaked out because his hair was similar to Rock's so he had to alter K's hair. lol
    - The game's cast features many fighters related to past Fatal Fury fighters...and even AOF fighters! Khushnood Butt (Marco Rodriguez) is actually a practitioner of Kyokugenryu Karate, the same fighting style that the Sakazakis (plus Robert Garcia) use in the AOF and KOF series. Ryuji Yamazaki actually makes an unseen cameo in Butt's (ha) ending where his student informs him that a "Dojo Buster" busted up the dojo. Yamazaki is known to be a Dojo Buster, especially in the KOF series. As mentioned earlier, Kim Kaphwan's sons, Jae Hoon and Dong Hwan, along with Hokutomaru, Andy's student, and Kevin Rian, a distant relative of Blue Mary Ryan, appear in the game.
    - This one's more of a... funny "fact". Freeman, one of the fighters in this game, must've been a cool design for it's time, because other fighting games would mimic his design. One that comes to mind immediately is Carmine from Under Night In-Birth. He looks like a blend between Freeman and Iori. lmao And funnily enough, when Iori lost his flame powers in KOF 12 and KOF 13, his moveset was a little similar to Freeman's.
    - Speaking of Iori, he actually cameos in Hokutomaru's stage. Take a good look~ He's a little hard to see, but once you see him, you see him~
    - This is the first appearance of Terry's BUSTER WOLF... Believe it or not, Terry would NOT get this move until freaking KOF 2003! T^T Why the hell did they wait so long!? Well, regardless, we got the move and it's one of his best special moves.
    That's all for now!

Kain "deemed the general populace jaded by mediocrity and peace (after Geese Howard died). Thinking that a person truly experiences life when they're oppressed, Kain decided to take Geese's legacy and rule Second Southtown. He wanted to declare the city's independence from the US, make it a city-state, and then model the town into one that would constantly be exposed to violence which would make the inhabitants value their lives, with the strongest ruling over the weak." The ending seems like some sort or weird subtle existentialist social commentary jab at politics and sociology; it starts off stating 'hey I heard this city is finally going to declare independence", to which Terry answers "doesnt matter, our lives wont change anyway", to which Rock replied to him asking if what Kain was trying to do was a bad thing or not questioning if it was wrong notice the fashionable lady has a shopping bag that says LIBERALISM lol.
And then she says "I'll take jewels to independence anyday!", meaning she values the consumerism materialistic benefits of Capitalism over whatever ideals Kain was trying to implement to show people the value in their lives over being jaded and complacent. When Kain told Terry "a wolf like you should know, people today aren't alive", he is referring to how Terry had to endure a life of hardship growing up on the streets after Jeff Bogard was killed and he had to gain strength in order to avenge him. Terry knew no peace, at least no inner peace, and Geese's death didnt satisfy that thirst for revenge; only made him empty. Until he filled that emptiness by adopting Rock. When the kids congratulate Terry in the moment of him falling into a bit of despair when he says "I love this town but...", Terry then realizes that its 'all about heart' which is what makes you 'truly alive', not revenge, but the love of others and where you are from that keeps you living and want to keep surviving.
    The End.

It was really strong and on point here I mean I wanted to see what Rock’s fate was after beating and later on joining Kain because something tells me that was the canon ending such build up and its also a shame a good chunk of these characters never returned like Freeman he was kool I liked how the Kim brothers wanted revenge on him for almost killing and hospitalIzing Kaphwan their father then Kevin a swat whose partner also killed by Freeman making these rivalries personal, Khushnood Butt being the disciple of Ryo carrying on Kyokugenryu legacy, then there was that little ninja kid that was Andy’s disciple and likely Mai’s too.

It was going to feature at least two new characters, but I think '02-'03 was around the time SNK was bought out and the project was indefinitely shelved. I read somewhere some of the people who worked on Garou really want to release that sequel, but they'd probably have to start over from scratch now.

Terry is all about freedom, isn't he? I think Terry's ending here is a critique to the city and folks growing into a consumerist society, loosing track of what's important, their freedom and free will... so even though the city was declaring independence the ladies were like "I'll take jewels over independence any day", meaning they don't give a fuck about their freedom as long as they can consume more and more and more... then it cuts to the humble kids playing on the street having fun and he's reminded of what really matters.
Liberalism printed on a shopping bag could be showing their hypocrisy? Or maybe the other way around, pointing to a growing consumerism oriented capitalistic free market... it was 1999, the left wasn't the dominant ideology and status quo yet... in 2019 we're denouncing the same things, but slowly changing where in the spectrum this critiques sit.

It's obvious and very hard to debate that. The Garou roster is imcomparably cooler and more interesting than the Sf3 roster in every aspect (the only thing the Sf3 roster have in their favor is the selectable supers that grants a bigger variety factor). But well, Snk was certainly aware of the Sf3 roster controversy and then they probably put extra effort in their creation proccess. These kind of drastic changes are very troublesome in fg's.
Secondly, there's the fact that classic Snk was the superior company in character creation. (Only after Kof 00 the quality dropped and became more hit or miss). Capcom became more and more afraid of bold decisions after that case of Sf3. Meanwhile Snk was flexing at them also making Kof 99 and succeeding doing what they wanted to do... K' is a very good char that stands on his own, is very liked until today, and works fine without the need to be a blatant shoto derivation.
The old Snk character creation talent is definitely one of their most underrated talents.

oh Kain is totally inspired by Shin from Fist of the Northstar. His outfit, his hair style and cockyness, his stage, he's got a woman he obviously holds dearly

This was definitely one of my favorite Fatal Fury games. Not only did we have Terry anchoring the cast, we were introduced to Rock Howard, BOTH of Kim Kaphwan's sons, a Kyoukugen Karater Master, and a pirate girl!

Isn't that riff on Rocks stage from the music Children - By Robert Miles? xD
    Stolen riffs best riffs. :P
Keep up the awesome entertainment Max!

It was intentional since the composer is a fan of Miles. Although may Robert rest in peace.

One of the KOF tracks is almost directly ripped from some heavy metal group. In general, Japanese composers loved to use some of the music as an "inspiration". And Western too.

The chugging guitars, explosive hits, timeless art style. I love this game still. Wish they still were like this tho, haven't felt the same since this and 3rd strike.
