The only difference between Ukrainian and Russian borsh (t doesn't belong there lol) is Ukrainian borsh is more likely to be made with pork and not beef (like in this recipe). Not only a great tasting soup, but super-healthy! I omitted the red meat, but used beef broth instead. My Aunt was from Ukraine and spoiled me with all kinds of authentic Ukrainian foods.
This is a very good recipe to start making borscht. I have made it at least 5 times now. We have changed a few things with each batch from her exact recipe. This last time was the best one yet, we made it with venison, and everyone devoured it. I used way more Cumin then it calls for (maybe 2 tablespoons). I also use brown sugar instead of white. I figured out this last time to speed up the process overall pour the beef broth in a separate pot at the very start with the diced beets, so the beets can start softening while you are browning the meat and other veggies. I will continue this method going forward. We also added the onions in with the meat when browning because it adds more flavor to the meat.
My mother was born in Kiev and she made it with dried shrimp and added cooked beans but no tomato sauce, other then that she used the same ingredients. it is delicious! I am going to try your recipe, thank you.
I just finished this and it's great! Thank you for the wonderful recipe. I just personally prefer more cooked cabbage, so I cook it for ten minutes instead of two. But otherwise it is really amazing! I recommend this! ^^

I actually don’t cook often but I wanted to try your recipe and I actually shocked myself of how good this soup came out! Thanks for making it so simple to follow and for bringing comfort into our homes!
I've made homemade Borscht before after getting inspired from dining years ago at a Russian cafe in Atlanta. I've used many of those items you did except not celery and cabbage, but I guess those make sense too, as the theme is cold-weather crops. Either way, it's such a rich and hearty soup for cold nights, and nutritious. I'll definitely have to try your recipe version!
I love this recipe so much. My Ukrainian friends made it for me for the first time, and this recipe is the closest to theirs. I already made this 4 times. It also helps sick heal faster. Such a lovely winter feeling in a cup. Thank you❤
@@cannotbeshaken7889 It doesn't have the earthy flavor of the beets. This soup is slightly sweet from the beets and tomatoes, but you can add a touch of lemon juice to balance the flavors.
I made this soup tonight because of the heavy rains I told my wife before I was going to make it. She asked that I also make another dish for stand by- just in case... No one else thought that it would taste good. The challenge was on. Let me say everyone LOVED It! I now KNOW that it will be in heavy rotation. I love this soup!
That's incredible!! I'm so glad to hear that it was a hit with everyone! :) It gets even better the next day once all the flavors have a chance to come together! :) Enjoy!
You're absolutely right! Once I tasted the soup I immediately reserved some for myself for the next day. What I didn't say in my previous comment was that I paired it with some Russian bread that I bought from a local bakery. The whole experience was sublime with the hot, toasted & buttered bread. It's perfect for a cold weather day.
I had never heard of this. I have a friend that works on a fishing boat in Alaska. He told me the cook is Ukrainian and made this. He told me it's some of the best soup he's ever had and I found you! I love to cook and will be making this very soon. I'm in SoCal, lots of Tri-Tip where I am, my favorite grilling meat ever! Thanks for the recipe 😘

Truly delicious, and actually pretty easy to put together. Some modifications I made is cooking the cabbage a little longer and adding a bay leaf, I think it adds an extra herby fragrance to the soup :) Thank you for sharing your amazing recipe ❤️
Growing up this was my favourite dish my mother used to make!❤️ But she’d always add things like vinegar, apple juice, red wine and a LOT of herbs that I thought would overpower it a little too much. That aftertaste ya know? Anyway this one was great to try and a lot less stressful to work with.
I'm so glad you enjoyed my recipe! :) I think every single Ukrainian/Russian mom has a slightly different version lol! I tried so many different ones over the years visiting family
I tried your recipe today and it came out perfect! It's the first time I tried to add the cabbage one minute before the turning off the heat and it made the texture wonderful (Usually it came out too soggy and the cabbage taste overpowered the rest) Thank you so much!
Another classic from my mama. I do it similar to hers and yours but I use a smoked ham hock. Removing most of the fat after the hock simmers for a couple hours. YUM. I am actually making this tomorrow for dinner with perogies. You are so lovely to watch. I checked your beautiful pots out as I just can't believe how stunning they are. Can't believe the variety on their website. The price is very high but I am sure the quality is amazing. Cheers!
Beets are also good for male sexual health because beets contain nitric acid which keeps blood vessels clean resulting in good prostate health. Don't recall where I read this but some cultures consider beets a fertility food.
Tanya, did your mom & grandmother cook Borsch with celery in Ukraine too? I’ve never even heard of celery until immigrating to USA. I make mine very similar with boiling beef with bones for base, make zazharka & omit celery :) Congratulations on your book, it looks amazing!
I've received so many comments about the celery! :) Yes, they both used celery. It's funny because I used to hate celery and would ask my mom why she adds it! But you really don't taste it in the soup! I used to do the zasharka, too but I wanted to simplify the recipe and just add the tomato sauce straight into the soup. No difference in flavor! :) Thank you so much! :)
I make mine with celery too, and my Ukrainian mother in law also adds black or kidney beans into her borscht. My wife disapproves of the beans in the borscht because it makes for a "musical" evening at bedtime. LOL

That’s too time consuming for my lifestyle, so this works better for modern (working) life in my opinion. Thanks!
My family comes from southeastern Poland, near the Ukrainian border. Cold borchst during the summer as an apperitife was with every supper. Of course, it was a vegan variety except for the sour cream, but i still remember the fresh dill and the sour cream just taking it up a notch.
I lived in Hong Kong in the 70's. Weirdly, this soup was available everywhere, I especially liked the version they served in the Sincere department store restaurant, i used to get the borscht and the crab au gratin every single time. Sometimes i went just for the restaurant in the store.
@@TatyanasEverydayFood Yeah. It's Chinese name literally means "Russian soup"(罗宋汤). I've eaten the soup before, but I never knew it came from Ukraine. Was looking for this classic from my childhood. Checked multiple different recipes and oh boy everyone does the soup their own way. I like this version the most. Not sure about the cabbage at the end as the one I used to eat had way more cooked cabbage. Going to try to make this version but will add the cabbage a bit earlier.
Tried this on a whimb..I had most of the ingredients already..turned out pretty good. Tasted like my traditional beef stew ..probably because I didn't have all the ingredients tho.
I add ground beef and I also smoke 3 t bone steaks before I chop them up and cook them into the soup. Adds a Smokey flavor. The ground beef makes the broth heartier and richer.

I've had Ukrainian/Russian friends before and they speak about this delicious soup whenever we talked about food! I really want to try it!
You should definitely give it a try! So delicious :)
I keep coming back to this video to cook again and again! This recipe is just perfect!
Thank you so much!! I'm so happy you're loving the recipe! I just made some borscht this week, too. The best! :)
I saw this on tiktok and it looks so good😊 and so I came to RUclips and found this I'm Mexican American and I'm trying this 🥰🥰
That's awesome! I hope you enjoy the recipe :)
I always come back to this video to cook the Borscht. This soup is amazing and the kids love it.
That's so wonderful to hear! I'm soo happy you're loving the recipe! :)
I didn’t have any celery but had the beet stems which are similar. The borsh turned out great! It might be my favorite soup now❤
I'm so glad you enjoyed the recipe! :) My favorite, too!
My mother was born in Kiev and she made it with dried shrimp and added cooked beans but no tomato sauce, other then that she used the same ingredients. it is delicious! I am going to try your recipe, thank you.
Wow, I've never heard of adding the shrimp! I would like to try that! My dad loves adding beans to his borscht, too. I hope you enjoy this version :)
I just finished this and it's great! Thank you for the wonderful recipe. I just personally prefer more cooked cabbage, so I cook it for ten minutes instead of two. But otherwise it is really amazing! I recommend this! ^^
Glad you enjoyed it! I just had some yesterday, too!
I’m trini! Growing up, my dad loved eating this soup & he’s cape verdian lol. I’ve always enjoyed it down to its lovely color & aroma. Since it’s wintertime, I’m finally taking the opportunity to make it myself. Thanks for sharing your recipe. I can’t wait 😋✨💚
Hi Trini! That's so wonderful to hear! My mom would make this soup for us all the time growing up, too. One of my favorites! I hope you enjoy this version! :)
Your recipes are never disappointed. I tried and is a delicious of flavors!!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!
So glad you enjoyed the recipe!! :)
I made this and it’s the best thing I’ve ever eaten!!!!! Thank you so much! Question: Can I store it in the fridge?
Awesome!! I'm soo happy you loved it! Yes, keep leftovers stored in the fridge for up to 4 days. It's actually even better the next day! I reheat mine on the stovetop
@ thank you so much for your answer! 💜
This is a fantastic recipe, my British hubby loved it. I also experimented and added 50/50 beans/meat for lighter summer version and it was light yet delicious.
Can we see творожный кекс/запеканка? 😃
Wonderful!! I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed it! Beans are a great addition, my dad always makes it like that! :)
I have it on my list :)
I'm getting your book. My family loved your beef stew recipe. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for purchasing my cookbook! I hope you enjoy all the recipes! Glad you loved the stew! :)
Another recipe already, I'm so blessed to have come across your channel. Your recipes are always amazing
Thank you so much 😊 Hope you enjoy this one, too!
I made this soup for my boyfriend and his brother who are Russian and were getting through COVID, and they loved it. I actually don’t cook often but I wanted to try your recipe and I actually shocked myself of how good this soup came out! Thanks for making it so simple to follow and for bringing comfort into our homes!
That's so awesome! :) I'm so glad to hear that they loved the soup! It's one of my favorites and perfect when you're feeling under the weather.
@@TatyanasEverydayFood yes!! It was perfect! Thank you very much for sharing! 🙏🏼
I hope you enjoy my family recipe! :) it's perfect for the winter months!
This recipe has been in my winter queue for a couple of years now. Thank you for sharing.
My pleasure 😊 I'm so happy you're loving the recipe!
Does it have a strong beet flavor? I don't like beets.
OMG I love this new foods to cook. I have done the Stuffed Cabbage Rolls now I am so excited for this recipe as I have never eaten it.
Hope you enjoy the recipe!! It's such a delicious dish!
I love this recipe so much. My Ukrainian friends made it for me for the first time, and this recipe is the closest to theirs. I already made this 4 times. It also helps sick heal faster. Such a lovely winter feeling in a cup. Thank you❤
That's so wonderful to hear! I'm so happy you love the recipe! My favorite borscht! :)
Does it have a strong beet flavor? Can you taste them in the soup? I have to make something Ukranian for class, but I hate beets.
@@cannotbeshaken7889 It doesn't have the earthy flavor of the beets. This soup is slightly sweet from the beets and tomatoes, but you can add a touch of lemon juice to balance the flavors.
@@TatyanasEverydayFood Hey, Thanks! 😊
I made it today! It’s so full of flavor and super delicious ❤️❤️❤️ all my family loves this borscht ❤️
It makes me so happy to hear that you enjoyed it!! :)
Im still using your sponge cake recipe from years ago lol......you need your own TV show!!!! 😍
I'm so glad to hear that! :) Yes, please! I would love that! :)
He's right - it's the best soup! So delicious and hearty! I hope you enjoy my recipe! :)
Ukraine Borscht it’s my favourite soup, I was really excited that a lot of people know that soup cause he have a beautiful colour recognise in many countries! Do u know that UNESCO add borscht to his culture heritage. If I make mistakes it’s that cause I just study this language 😊
I'm so glad you enjoy it! Hope you like my recipe!
I made it for the first time, i love it! Thanks for sharing the recipe again!
My pleasure 😊 I'm so glad you loved it!
This dish was 5*, my husband had never eaten borscht and fell in love.
Where did you get the beautiful bowls? i am obsessed 😍
That's so wonderful to hear! I'm so glad you enjoyed the recipe! I get most of my bowls at Home Goods!
Truly delicious, and actually pretty easy to put together. Some modifications I made is cooking the cabbage a little longer and adding a bay leaf, I think it adds an extra herby fragrance to the soup :) Thank you for sharing your amazing recipe ❤️
I'm soo happy you enjoyed the recipe!! :) My favorite!
Growing up this was my favourite dish my mother used to make!❤️
But she’d always add things like vinegar, apple juice, red wine and a LOT of herbs that I thought would overpower it a little too much.
That aftertaste ya know? Anyway this one was great to try and a lot less stressful to work with.
I'm so glad you enjoyed my recipe! :)
I think every single Ukrainian/Russian mom has a slightly different version lol! I tried so many different ones over the years visiting family
Try this recipe, it’s closer to what it should be:

I tried your recipe today and it came out perfect!
It's the first time I tried to add the cabbage one minute before the turning off the heat and it made the texture wonderful (Usually it came out too soggy and the cabbage taste overpowered the rest)
Thank you so much!
Hi Dia! I'm so glad you enjoyed the recipe!! My mom always made it this way and it turns out delicious! :)
Same here usually I add the cabbage at the beginning but today I’m gonna try to add it at the last 😍🙏sooo excited 👏
how many portions does it serve?
It is such a classic in Poland, too! I love this soup, one of my favourites!
My grandparents are from Poland! :) Mine, too! :)
@@TatyanasEverydayFood Hi...Just made this dish it tastes soo delicious. Thank You.
Polish borsh has nothing to do with ukrainian recipe, 2 different dishes
Is possible. But polish borshch is a copy of Ukrainian. Copies aways are diferente from original.
I’m Croatian and my husband is Russian. This is by FAR the best recipe I have ever seen of this soup❤️thank you for including the beef and cabbage!
I'm so glad you enjoy it! :) It's my favorite!!
because the recipe is Ukrainian ;)
I just made this and it is so good!!
Awesome!! :) I'm so glad you enjoyed the recipe!
Cheers!
I need to try this with smoked meat! I've heard it tastes amazing!
Thank you so much for watching! :)
I’m making it now and it smells so Ridiculously good! Thank you for the recipe!
My pleasure 😊 I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I’ve never had borscht before! I’m excited to try this!
You have to try it asap! :) So warming and delicious!
It's very healthy,too .
Beets are also good for male sexual health because beets contain nitric acid which keeps blood vessels clean resulting in good prostate health. Don't recall where I read this but some cultures consider beets a fertility food.
Thank you so much. This is my family's go-to one pot recipe now. Yum yum😊😊😊
You're most welcome! I'm so happy you're enjoying this recipe! :)
Tanya, did your mom & grandmother cook Borsch with celery in Ukraine too? I’ve never even heard of celery until immigrating to USA. I make mine very similar with boiling beef with bones for base, make zazharka & omit celery :) Congratulations on your book, it looks amazing!
I am from Portugal and did not know about celery until moving to the USA. I am not a fan either.
At least this recipe doesn't have ketchup :)
I make mine with celery too, and my Ukrainian mother in law also adds black or kidney beans into her borscht. My wife disapproves of the beans in the borscht because it makes for a "musical" evening at bedtime. LOL
@@whotelakecity2001 Don't ever substitute tomato sauce in borscht with Ketchup or you'll raise the wrath of Stalin's spirit who will haunt your home and cause cabbage rolls to attack you at night. :P
So last night (in the middle of the night, mind you) I made borsht for the first time, following your recipe very closely. All I can say is WOW!
The borsht was a massive hit! Incredibly delicious and filling. Thanks, Tanya, for providing us with this video. I can’t wait to make it again. 💪🏻
Late night cooking is always fun! I'm so happy you loved the borscht! It's one of my favorite dishes! :)
This recipie is looking soooo delicious😍
Tatyana plz do a kitchen tour video!!!!
I'm making it right now by your recipe. The smell is heavenly. Now I'm cooking it for an hour more so the meat gets more tender and soft, and after that I'll add cabbage. I already see this dish will be my discovery of the year 😃 10/10
Awesome!! :) I wish I had some borscht right now, too! It's a favorite of mine. I hope you love it, too! :)

Made borsht for the resturant following your base recipie. Had to improvise with what I had avaliable. Used au jus instead of beef broth. Added smoked paprika and a small amount of worchrsishire and butter. Tomato sauce and used ribeye steaks for the protein.
I hope it was a hit with everyone! Great substitutes, too!
Hello Tatyana! 🌸
I've made Borscht before, a basic and simple one, no meat in mine.
But this recipe looks very filling and delicious!
Your recipe has such a nice variety of ingredients and such a wonderful red color! 😀
BIG CONGRATS on your new cookbook......YAY YOU!!
I'm looking forward to getting my hands on "BEYOND BORSCHT".
I have your first cookbook......"THE EUROPEAN CAKE COOKBOOK" and I LOVE it!!
Any recipe that I've made from it has been a success for me.
My friends think so too.....LOL!
Have a good day Tatyana! 🌷
Thank you so much Dalila! Yes, this meat version is so hearty and delicious! I hope you have a chance to try it! :) I'm so glad you enjoy my first cookbook and I hope you enjoy this second one, too! :)
My mom gave me some beets, I had no idea what to do with them. I’m definitely going to try making this soup, thanks for the easy version of it featuring beef broth instead of making it from scratch. That’s too time consuming for my lifestyle, so this works better for modern (working) life in my opinion. Thanks!
This is the perfect way to use those beets! I love using beef broth, too! I'm wayyy too busy to make it from scratch, too! Enjoy :)
I've always added red kidney beans
My dad does, too! :)
Sooo delicious yum yum!!! Thank you so much for posting this easy to follow recipe!!

My family comes from southeastern Poland, near the Ukrainian border. Cold borchst during the summer as an apperitife was with every supper. Of course, it was a vegan variety except for the sour cream, but i still remember the fresh dill and the sour cream just taking it up a notch.
Cold borscht is perfect for summer! :) My mom also made 'green borscht' with sorrel and eggs for summertime; so good!
I lived in Hong Kong in the 70's. Weirdly, this soup was available everywhere, I especially liked the version they served in the Sincere department store restaurant, i used to get the borscht and the crab au gratin every single time. Sometimes i went just for the restaurant in the store.
That's so interesting! There must have been a Russian population living there. This soup is the best! :)
@@TatyanasEverydayFood Yeah. It's Chinese name literally means "Russian soup"(罗宋汤). I've eaten the soup before, but I never knew it came from Ukraine. Chinese recipe is a bit differnt, with few or no beetroots but more potatos. I am going to cook an authentic borscht according to your recipe. Thanks for the great tutorial.
Fairly simple recipe and it came out great. Added some vinegar at the end for a tangy addition and it came out superb

My Grandmother made it frequently when I was a kid.
She was from Yugoslavia.
Was not a fan of beets in general but in her soup it was ok.
It's such a delicious soup! This one is very tomato forward and not as earthy. Enjoy!
That recipe looks great, but that pot you have there is beautiful.

It really is! I never tire of this delicious soup. Enjoy!
I'm so glad you found my recipe! This borscht is amazing! Yes, you can add the cabbage earlier, or just keep cooking it for longer. Enjoy!
Excellent recipe, very flavorful. I used chuck and added a bay leave, otherwise stop on. Will make it again

When making this with chicken instead of beef should I switch out the beef stock with chicken stock?
That's a great question! Yes, I would use chicken bone broth for the best results. Enjoy!
