  • Find out how Rodney Crawford, PTA, ATC, implements aquatic therapy with a HydroWorx pool to combat a plateau in ACL, MCL and meniscus tear recovery for his patient.
After eight weeks of post-op physical therapy on land, this volleyball player hit a plateau in her ACL, MCL and meniscus tear recovery before beginning aquatic therapy at Dr. Daniel C. Eby's outpatient physical therapy unit. Despite weeks of physical therapy on land, she still had issues with her range of motion and endurance. Treating clinician Rodney Crawford developed a pool protocol in their facility's HydroWorx 500 Series. After two sessions per week for three weeks, the patient could go back to making progress in land-based physical therapy.
The HydroWorx 500 Series pool has features designed to enhance aquatic therapy outcomes at an economical price. It includes an integrated treadmill and water jets to increase the range of exercises that your patients can perform in the pool. The treadmill provides more opportunities for gait training and sport-specific activities for athletic recovery. Resistance jets enable a clinician to increase the intensity of a drill or provide deep tissue massage.

I am nervous because I have to do this starting tomorrow, aquatic therapy. I did a little physical therapy but it was really starting to hurt and my knee still doesn't bend all the way and it's hard to completely straight too. They said that this will help me and be easier on the joints so I will want to do it. I am still nervous because I don't even take a bath yet. I still do a shower and have a chair I sit on. I have scar tissue and it hurts!! I'm very nervous because of the pain!!

Thank you for sharing. Is walking inside a pool a safe and good exercise with meniscus/cartilage knee injury?
I heard it was not recommended.

Is swimming good for torn ligament on your both legs

Debbie Gault yes because it’s let’s your knee not hold on to your body weight so your excersising your knee without the Strain of holding your body weight cuz your in the water when your on the water there is no weight to the knee

is it ok to start doing this like 2 says after a possible strain ?

Likely not good if you’re swimming, not until 6 weeks + anyways. Open chain exercises will stress ligaments as it increases opportunity with lower limb deviations. You can still do standing, close chain, or static exercises in the pool to work on conditioning and proprioception.
