    This video shows you how to replace the hard drive in a HUMAX HDR-1000S FreeSat PVR. I would suggest this as a first fix if your HDR-1000S is behaving in any of the following ways:
    1. Playback of recorded items fails with 'unsupported file format' error.
    2. All recordings are lost.
    3. Device takes several minutes to start.
    All of the above happened with the device shown in the video. Often everything would be working perfectly too, but the problems repeated.
    This video doesn't have any magic fix advice to recover lost recordings - because there isn't any.
    If the hard drive is mechanically faulty and you see 'lost recording' errors then the you have actually lost your recordings.
    The newer HUMAX drives encrypt recordings and you can't simply connect the drive to a PC and copy over the files that still work - they can't be played and they won't show up if you then put them on a replacement drive.
    The changes to RUclips now mean that I don't get any advertising revenue from my videos - I have the views, but I need over 1000 subscribers.
    I'm never going to get rich from this, but it is nice to get something... So if you've watched this video then you can buy me as coffee using the Ko-fi link, click Like or click Subscribe. Or all three!

    Just followed your excellent instructions and noted that my old Seagate Hard drive was 10 years old and I bought my Humax HDR 1000S in 2013 so lasted way beyond its expected life expectancy. Replaced it with your recommended Western Digital Purple HD, fingers crossed I get a few more years out of it now. Thank you!

    Cheers for the video! Just bought one of these of some bloke on Facebook and to my annoyance the hard drive is not being recognised for some reason. I will first investigate whether there is a loose connection but I suspect I’ll be buying and installing a new drive and you video has helped me to see it’s not that difficult to do.

    we have a local furniture charity and they also sell tvs etc and noticed today they had a humax box for £5 not too sure on the model number but now that i know they have either a 500gb or 1tb hdd its worth a fiver just for the hd cex charges £8 for a 500gb hd but will only give you £3 for it if you trade it in they charge £28 for a 1tb but will only give you £12 for trade in so if its a 1tb ive hit the jackpot provided its still there next thursday when i get my benefit
    that spare space it holds back is for the epg , these hd can be used in desk top pc just connect to the pc assign a drive letter then format it and its good to go as a ext hd ive done this with the hd out of sky plus boxes the DRX 895 WL either have a 1.5TB or 2tb hd the 890 WL has a 500gb hd so far ive gotten 2 500gb hd out of sky plus boxes

      It does need to format the drive in order to use it, but if the drive shows up in the settings then there’s a good chance it’s the old drive that has the problem and replacing it is going to work.

      I think it might detect existing partitions and ignore them - so it doesn't have any available free space to format for itself. Pretty sure it uses a Linux file system too.
      If you use Disk Management to delete partitions before you connect it to the Humax then it will probably work - you might have to use Diskpart to remove the difficult partitions, but I wouldn't bother doing that until you know it works with the partitions Disk Management can remove.

    Hi Nic, thanks for this video. The Humax HDR-1000S has a known bug where the hard drive controller appears to be failing. I thought this was a motherboard issue with the box itself and not the hard drive. Did your unit loose all it's recordings and did replacing the drive fix this?

    • @sterntechdaddy
      @sterntechdaddy  6 лет назад

      Actually.... I lost the recordings because the drive was replaced and this fix worked for a while, but I think you are right about the HDD controller - this box doesn't feel 100% and I've since bought a new HDR-1100S box - but when you try and delete lots of recorded episodes of one program does your box instantly reset?

    • @Toob41
      @Toob41 6 лет назад

      Humax are now only offering an exchange 1100S for a small fee instead of repairing the faulty 1000S units as they often failed again later. I wanted my 1Tb of recordings back which are only decryptable by the original faulty 1000S so I haven't exchanged it yet as they want the old drive too. I am going to buy an older Foxsat HDR as they can back up their drives and have a 'custom' firmware option out there on the web. I never tried a mass deleting but the box always did a few odd things from new which I didn't mind as long as I still had the recordings. The hummy forum and several others are very helpful. Cheers

      A 10:40 there's the details about formatting the HDD.... the one fitted was brand new - so was detected as unformatted for use with the receiver.
      I would use a PC to delete any existing partitions on your drive and then fit it to see what happens - the receiver might configure it for you - but if you receiver doesn't have this option, then the file system was ext3 when I tried to recover some recording from my old receiver - this is a Linux file system.
      Hope this helps!

      Try and get a AV model drive... or one designed for CCTV - they are optimised for simultaneous streams of data - i.e. AV and CCTV drives are able to handle more than the two channels recording and one recoding being watched maximum demand a drive needs to cope with for the HUMAX.

      You might need to delete everything from it first... the sky file system might prevent the Humax from using the drive.

    Good video Nic, (please edit some of the repetitive bits out.) Did you think of mounting the drive via your computer(Linux) to check the hard drive? i'm not convinced it is always a hardware problem. After disconnecting the power supply and reconnecting, mine works for a few days befor3e it falls over again. My suspicion is faulty software/firmware. (or Not Fit For Purpose!)

      @sterntechdaddy  6 лет назад

      Thanks! All my videos are one take with no editing - so there might be a bit of repetition which I hope reinforces what I've said.
      I tried mounting on both a Linux machine and PC with tools to read the file system, but each box encrypts recordings uniquely so although the drive could be read I couldn't test any of the files. The drive did seem OK though.... I have suspicions about overheating too, but I think you're right in thinking that it isn't always a hardware fault.

      ESD protection is overstressed as a 'catch all' instruction when groups of people are being taught anything where ESD could potentially cause damage.
      I've never worn an ESD wrist strap in my career and I've never broken anything - but I don't wear polyester and I generally tap something with an earth (like the lamp on the TV cabinet you cannot see in the video) before I take something with electronics in it apart. I'm also not shuffling about on the carpet - which could generate some static charge.

    Would there be any advantage to using a SSD ?

    • @sterntechdaddy
      @sterntechdaddy  5 лет назад +2

      Potentially... it'll probably boot faster... but...
      1. Surveillance drives are better suited because they are designed to handle multiple streams of data - a Humax box could be expected to record on two channels whilst watching a recorded program at the same time.
      2. Capacity would be a problem - at this time the 250GB SSD drives are a 'sweet spot' for price, with the 1TB models being a lot more expensive than their mechanical equivalent. 250GB wouldn't last long for recordings...
      3. Physical size - all SSD drives are 2.5" and the Humax takes 3.5" drives. This isn't really a problem though - especially when compared tot he first two. A quick fix is to just tape the drive in or use the Velcro tape rather than worry about a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor.

    • @BobHannent
      @BobHannent 4 года назад

      The STB has no understanding of SSDs (unlike many computers), and because it has the rewind buffer that can wear down an SSD more than a HDD which was designed for consumer electronics. I wouldn't advise using an SSD in a set-top box. (FYI, I worked on the development and release of these boxes).

      When you turn on for the first time after fitting the new drive it should pop up a 'Your drive isn't formatted' message (10:38) and you can then go to the settings to configure the drive.
      If you are not getting this pop up message then power the unit down and check the connections. I would disconnect the drive completely and then reconnect - but make sure the unit is off. Then power on again and see what happens.

      If you still get no message (and the drive doesn't appear in settings) then you'll need to test the drive in a PC and/or try another drive in the Humax to see if the new drive or the Humax is faulty. I'm assuming you're replacing because of lost recordings rather than a different kind of malfunction that might suggest the Humax itself is faulty.
      If would be very unlucky to have a faulty new drive though - modern manufacturing means that very few new drives are DOA - so you would need to test it properly on a PC before you RMA it. WD have their own diagnostic software to verify faults - support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx?p=3

    Don’t rush to buy a new hard drive. When I got that message “you have no recordings” I took out the hard drive and simply put it back in again. All my recordings came back! So I put it down to a loose connection. It worked for about a week until the same message came up. This time I just turned the power off for a few minutes and all the recordings were restored again! I don’t think that (in my case) buying a new hard drive is going to make any difference. It’s the HDD controller on the motherboard that is the problem. Useful video but title a bit misleading: have upgraded drives before but thought you had some trick for recovering 'lost' recordings. Given the actual content why even mention recordings in the title?

    • @sterntechdaddy
      @sterntechdaddy  4 года назад +1

      It’s pretty clear from the description that this is ultimately what you have to if you get a ‘lost recordings’ error.
      i.e. if you have a drive error you cannot recover the recordings - so it’s best not to bother and just replace the drive.
      Each HUMAX box encrypts recordings in their own unique way - so you can't just take the faulty drive out and read the data.
      Better that people who are looking to recover their recording find this video before they waste their time attempting a fix that could be impossible.

    • @seansverige
      @seansverige 4 года назад

      @@sterntechdaddy TBH not in the habit of reading description before viewing video - who does? - and would argue that regardless, a clear title is rarely a bad thing. Didn't know that each box encrypted uniquely (I assume that sentence should 'can't' as opposed to 'can')
      I am upgrading my drive so am trying to transfer (viewable) recordings as opposed to extract them, so going to try cloning and resizing partitions. Not sure it'll work, but worst case scenario I'll have to reformat new drive

    • @sterntechdaddy
      @sterntechdaddy  4 года назад

      I actually read descriptions while I'm watching a video - just in case there's something useful in there - but a quick glance is usually enough to judge that though.
      I didn't know about the encryption - until I tried to read another drive taken out of the Humax in the video!
      There's hassles reading the file system anyway, but it was a real pain to then discover that the files couldn't be played.
      Note that for drives that are actually faulty - as in the video - the recordings are lost because you usually can't clone a faulty drive. Most cloning software will bomb after a certain number of errors and you can't copy individual files over because the HUMAX probably won't see them when a new drive is put in.
      I've corrected the 'can' … its wasn't deliberate, and it is nice to see people actually reading things.
      I've also updated the description.
      Upgrading the drive will be really interesting... can you let us know if cloning and resizing the old drive means the recordings work?
      :)

    • @seansverige

      @@sterntechdaddy OK, some success.
      Despite what the webchat guy at Humax said, there _does_ seem to be a size constraint: I bought a 4Tb WD purple and no matter what I do cannot get PVR to allocate more than 1600Gb for recordings (although it sees the 'full' ~3.7, the rest is 'Reserved' - though it actually shows as unallocated in a partition manager)
      I *was* able to clone partitions using Acronis, and _was_ able to view them however despite every recording I tried working (randomly tried about half a dozen, old, new and inbetween) the used space was shown as 117Gb (as opposed to ~900Gb on original drive) - even if the is a TOC error I'd be worried about overwriting.
      Although Acronis could clone partitions (sector by sector, took ~6 hrs) it can't create or extend EXT format volumes, so I had to use EaseUS Partition Master Pro, and was able to extend cloned partition to fill unallocated space between two cloned partitions (to get the full 1600Gb with old recordings) OK, but when I subsequently tried a few other things in terms of resizing & moving partitions to use unallocated 2Tb, it stopped recognising recordings and formatted drive.
      The upshot is that I've put the old drive back in and will give it another go with a 2Tb drive but that'll be after an upcoming house move...

    • @sterntechdaddy
      @sterntechdaddy  4 года назад

      @@seansverige Thanks for doing this..... it's really interesting seeing as Humax offer no information about this kind of thing.
      I think 2TB is the maximum size the HDR-1000S could recognise and although the file system appears to be Linux, it might be more preparatory when it get created by the box after a blank drive is put in.
      Technically, cloning to the same size drive should work - and that might 'repair' lost recordings if the original drive isn't too far gone.
      I've got a Silverstone TS12C which is able to do hostless drive duplication - but it might just copy the damaged sectors 'as is' and I have no idea how good the Humax is at error correction and repair.
      Let us know how you get on with the duplication to 2TB.

      Not fair Mike!
      I clearly state that recordings cannot be recovered. Please read the video description.
      "This video doesn't have any magic fix advice to recover lost recordings - because there isn't any."
      Generally... Each machine encrypts recordings using its own unique algorithm - so even if you can read the files on the drive and copy them off (its a Linux file system so this can be done) you can't play or see what each file actually is.
