  • Can't record programs or programs failing to record? Unable to reformat the disk in your freesat box? You need to change the hard disk that's in the device and then reformat the new one to resolve your problem and get your programs recording again. This is a fairly easy job to do once you get into the case. You don't need to use the same type of hard disk, although if you have a video type disk then that would be better than a desktop hdd.
    Our shows weren't recording and I couldn't reformat the hard disk as it kept failing so I decided to replace the hard disk for another 1TB drive that I had sat in the cupboard. It's a Seagate drive from an old desktop PC and it works perfectly after reformatting it so we can now record our shows again!
    Let me know what drive you used to replace yours or if your Freeview or Freesat box has experienced the same issues in the comments below.

    The bracket is there to earth the top plate of the HDD to the circuit board. The bracket includes a metal coated pad which is conductive. The bracket and pad can be fitted in different ways to accommodate HDD's of different thicknesses. I was able to fit a 2 TB Western Digital Purple HDD which is thicker than the Seagate drive it replaced.

    My 4 year old Humax wiped all my old recordings. After rebooting several times to bring them back, it eventually gave up, not even able to record. After having watched your video I took the plunge and ordered a new 1T drive from Amazon £27. Your video was exactly how it went and my Humax is back to normal. I’ve never taken a device apart to fix, but this gave me more confidence in the future.

    Thank you very much, this helped me with my humax hdr-3000t PVR that uses the same box, I was not sure about the disassembly, and your video helped me a lot, regards Val

    Thank you, very clear. Humax boxes vary a lot, different ways to remove the lid and there may or may not be a SATA lead.

      I'm also wondering if a 1TB 2.5" SSD could be used so I may try that at some point. :-)

    Hi great video I have a bt you view box and all I'm getting when I switch it on is please wait I've tried to do a reset by turning the power on and pushing the volume button but nothing seems to to work🤔I was wondering if I could put the hard drive in my old laptop and format it but I'm not sure

      I'm not sure with the YouView boxes, however its definitely worth trying to see if it fixes things. You can always put the old HDD back in after if it doesn't resolve it. Have you tried reformatting the drive from the settings menu? It's an option on the Freesat box, but again I'm not sure with the RUclips box.

    You haven’t mentioned the whole point of your video, did it fix the issue ? The answer is probably not. Your video was basically- how to open the box and how to change a hard drive. If you had mentioned this in the headline of your video I suspect you wouldn’t get comments like these.

    I don't see the need for the top mounting bracket as the HD is held in with four screws from the bottom. I think the only purpose for it is to protect against someone just removing the screws whilst not holding the HD in place. I bunged a full height HD in mine and dispensed with the top mounting bracket. The only issue now is whether there is sufficient heat dissipation.

      I'm curious to see how a SSD would fare in a Freesat box for recording and playback. It's bound to be better than a HDD, but obviously it needs to be a video type drive. Has anyone tried this?

      @@FrimleyComputing The large HDD I used has worked faultlessly but I wasn't happy with the increased noise over the existing HDD which was already pretty noisy (loud continuous hissing noise, clicking heads and loud disk start-up noise) and high temperature (the top of the case would get quite hot). So I have just replaced it with an SSD and given it a quick test by recording two programmes at the same time whilst watching one of the programmes. So far so good. And the box lid is now cold and the box is completely silent and vibration free - I could actually sleep in the same room as this whilst recording. I'll report back in about three months as to whether it is continuing to work. If I can get three years before SSD failure then I'll be very happy. This SSD is only a small 240GB one which only gives about 170GB for recordings so my intention is to not let it go above 60% full at any time and I have also left time-slip off so that it is not recording continuously.

    • @sborgs99
      @sborgs99 Год назад

      Three months gone and the SSD is still working perfectly - no issues whatsoever - I wish I'd replaced the noisy, clunky hard disk much sooner. The box is completely silent. I've been careful not to let the SSD get more than 50% full and haven't activated the constant record functionality - I never saw the point in constantly recording on the off chance that I would need to rewind. SSDs seem to be starting to come down in price now so I may replace it with a larger capacity at some point.

      @@thumperman8490 Thanks. The HDD proved to be quite noisy so I replaced it with an SSD. Totally silent now and has been running fine for months. I've disabled time-slip to limit the SSD writes.

    It would have been sensible to check that there are good reasons why a video rated HD was used, do not just shove any old disc in there!

    • @FrimleyComputing
      @FrimleyComputing  2 года назад

      Agreed, however if you don't have one (and don't want to buy one) then any HDD will do. I've been running this since changing and have had zero issues. It all works just fine. 😃

    • @michaelsullivan7987
      @michaelsullivan7987 2 года назад

      @@FrimleyComputing The problem with hard drives is they tend to be noisy. Video ones are designed to run quieter and take all the constant recording and deleting a bit better than a PC one. But if you are happy that’s the main thing. 😀

    • @FrimleyComputing
      @FrimleyComputing  2 года назад

      @@michaelsullivan7987 Indeed. I just used what I had laying around rather than buying a replacement drive. I don't use a freesat box anymore as we had to replace the TV so purchased a Samsung with freesat built in and connected an M.2 NVMe portable drive to it which we now used for Timeshift & recordings.
