    seagate hard disk not detected. Does it spin? (what to do if you fried your drive by plugging in wrong power supply)
    If your seagate hard disk not detected, first of all, power it on and listen to it with your ear right next to it. Does it spin?
    If not, then it would be for one of the 3 reasons. Seized motor, unparked heads, or dead PCB (printed circuit board). There are also things like dead preamp, but on most brands of drives it would not prevent the spin up process.
    I will begin with explaining what seized motor is. Seized motor on the hard drive is fairly common issue that you would find on Seagate hard drive generations 7200.8 7200.9 7200.10 7200.11 7200.12, as well as some hitachi/IBM 2.5” hard drives.
    Seized motor would upon start up process with create a faint buzzing, and in some cases beeping sound. I would highly suggest that you seek professional help at this point. This is one of the most difficult tasks to perform on the hard drive, and without necessary equipment you will kill your hard drive in attempt to recover it.
    However, these sounds are identical to the ones that the sound would make when heads are not parked properly. All modern hard drives offer touchless heads technology, meaning that the heads are never suppose to come in contact with the disk surface. In the past 3.5” hard drives used to park heads closer towards the center of the drive, and they would land right onto the platter surface that had air pockets to prevent sticking. That technology slowly started to get outdated and less reliable than touchless, so now hard drives park heads on the external parking ramp. Touchless technology offers more durability for the heads when the drive is off power. If it is dropped external parking ramp, that suspends heads in the air, is much better option than having heads sit on the actual disk surface. (this section is best to be read on our blog page here because I have pictures explaining the difference)
    Unlike 2 issues above, dead PCB, will turn your drive completely silent. PCB failure would usually be caused by power surges, or plugging in a wrong external hard drive power supply. Dead PCB can be either replaced, or repaired on component level. Luckily, TVS Diodes would protect most hard drives PCBs for mishaps like this, so they need to be tested first. A transient-voltage-suppression (TVS) diode or thyrector is an electronic component used to protect electronics from voltage spikes induced on connected wires. Multimeter with continuity test option will quickly determine if you have a damaged diode or not. Ideally, if you detect the damaged diode it would need to be replaced with an identical one, but in our case since I just needed to recover the data from this external hard drive. After the failed diode was removed, client’s drive began to spin and get detected by our imaging equipment.

I am scared to apply power to the board without the diode as there is a chance it can fry the board. Can you please explain the role of the diode in this instance and how the board can work without it? Thanks.

    This video helped me to diagnose and get a damaged 1TB Seagate video hard drive (ST1000vm002) from a Rogers Nextbox 3 going again. The problem is exactly the same, a shorted diode (which did not test ok after removal). When I removed the diode the drive spun up and was recognized. I am surprised the drive board without that diode enables the drive to work. Can the drive be operated "as is" or should the diode be replaced?

    One question I'd like to ask. Without going into huge detail I have a custom water cooler very high preformance PC and I've seen some people have a clear top, see through lid or case cover on there HDD so you can see it all working etc. all my SSDs are on show and I'd love to do the same

I located two diodes, both Motorola 933 1BL3 ZP, that appear shorted. I haven't removed them yet. Do they need to be replaced? If so, what equivalent diode can be used? I haven't found specs for these diodes. Thanks.

    Hey i just sent a drive to outsource datarecovery services, and i KNOW for a fact the data on it is still good. The problem it has is that it TRIES to spin up but cant complete it. So i logically figured its either gonna be the PCB or barely possible the Spindle having a problem. I was told 3 times that all it would need is the $60 pcb swap, then they call and say "nope only data recovery will work"
    But literally 30 mins before it just stopped spinning i WAS AT THE DAMN DESKTOP, the files are fine.
    And you seem like an upfront sorta dude, how much would it cost for a PCB swap, or in the worst case a Spindle swap, i really really dont have a lot of money, which is why when he quoted me $600 dollars for data recovery, i just thought "data recovery?? why it doesn't need data recovery, the problem is its not spinning up"

    Thanks for your videos! Any idea what might be wrong if seagate 2TB works just fine when detected, but... it's not detected all that often lately?.. It spins just fine, no weird noises. No errors in any test, SMART is ok, disk isn't too old yet (the newest I have aside from its replacement). And somehow BIOS just says says it's not there after being stuck on motherboard loading screen for like 30 sec. Swapping to other SATA doesn't help, other hdds work fine in its place. Tried to clear its contacts like you showed in this video, doesn't seem to help (but I got it detected at least 2 times after that). There's no data to save left, just wondering if it's something that might save me 2TB of space being tossed to trash.

    ST3000DM001
    Have problems with Head 4... When imaging the drive I can see a pattern: where a batch of sectors wouldn't get read, then a long batch would get read, and then a small batch not read again etc - with equal intervals.
    I ran /7 -> X through serial and got resistance values for all heads.
    All heads reading around 300 (need to convert from HEX to Decimal) except head 04 (head 5) which reads 540.
    Unfortunately I do not have access to hardware recovery tools like PC-3000, MRT etc... I've disable re-trying reading in firmware through terminal and can now quickly image the drive with HDDSuperClone without getting stuck at dead head for too long. But have a cleanroom, so will attempt a head swap after 5 healthy platters get imaged. If headswap will not fix the problem - time to send to specialists with hardware recovery tools.

  • @hectorpl2066

    Im sure this is a stupid question but I don't get something. You touch red and black probes together to demonstrate the sound. Isnt this exactly the same situation when the current goes through the diode? In other words if the current goes through the diode and we touch the red and black probes on both ends of the diode it should be exectly the same as if we just touch them together (without the diode in between) and the sound should occur?

    • @j3ffn4v4rr0
      @j3ffn4v4rr0 5 лет назад

      Not stupid, he was not clear about this: The basic function of a diode is to let current flow ONE way only....by "shorted" he means the diode lets current through both ways. The "arrow and a line" he mentioned is the symbol for a diode (can't type it here, just look it up and you'll see what I mean)...the arrow part of the symbol indicates which side is + and the "line" side of the symbol is the minus (negative) side. Current is supposed to flow from plus to minus, and if you test with the probes that way, you are supposed to get a sound...but if you switch the probes (put red on the minus side, and black on the plus side) and you still get a sound, the diode is no good.

    Hi,
    Liked the video, even though I have a question to ask. 🤔
    I have a Maxtor 40 GB IDE 3.5" HDD which is not spinning.
    I followed your example & (by reading a comment of yours) I placed the negative test probe lead on the cathode side of the TVS Diode (where the line or stripe is), while the red lead went on the anode side. 🙄
    If I switch the probe leads I get the same reading on the digital multimeter. This isn't normal, right ?
    Because the diode is supposed to allow current to flow in one direction, while blocking it in reverse. 😏
    Because if I try the continuity test on the other TVS diode (switching the test probe leads), briefly I get a value on the LCD screen of the digital multimeter, but it immediately disappears (as it should). So the other one seems fine.
    How do I get a replacement TVS diode ? Both are yellow in color. The suspected bad one is 336 16K 117. How do I interpret this ? 😣
    The good one has writing 156 E P042T
    Thanks for your reply in advance. 😊
    Best Regards,

I was able to use this video with every step and that same diode was my problem. What I am wondering, however is how long will this HDD work without that Diode? Should I end up buying another PCB board to be safe?

      it will last until next power surge Kato. 3TB ST3000DM001 are the worst drives to have, if you check their stats you will quickly find out about their over 40% failure rate. I would recommend moving your data to a safer device like a WD or Toshiba

      Thanks for the info. Luckily, I have had this driver for a few years with a WD as backup; however during a recent move misplaced the power adapter for it. Is it the same output as the Seagate? 12v 1.5A. I also heard that WD have made it so that you can't remove the PCB. Is that the case?

    • @hddrecoveryservices
      @hddrecoveryservices  7 лет назад

      hard to say about the power supplies. Usually they are the same, but plugging in the wrong one is what could have initiated your problem with the Seagate in the first place. WD Passport drives have USB connector instead of regular SATA

    hey dude , love your channel, now i have an exact 3tb seagate like the one in the video, it spins for a second when connected the stops completely. i got a multimeter and conducted a continuity test on the same two diodes but my multimeter doesn't have the sound like yours so i jus have to read the writing on the screen, problem is i have no idea what the hell am reading, it doesnt say 0.8 or o.5 , first diode returns 624 and the second diode returns 586 . what does that mean coz i am a complete noob with multimeters, which is bad and which is good on those two diode readings

    • @hddrecoveryservices

      If it spins up and down, then you have a much more serious issue known as a head failure. There are bunch of videos that demonstrate the process, but you need a professional help to pull data from the drive at this point

    yo, I received a factory new drive from Seagate and the motor doesn't spin up. It gets detected in the device manager, sometimes also in the disk management without any storage showing up for it. I actually ordered two units, both of them seem to be from the same charge, although the PCB of the defective drive looks a bit discolored. I tried that one first in my external drive enclosure and it didn't spin up, so I assumed my external enclosure was defective (many reported cases of not detecting drives with more than 2TB of storage). I dropped the other drive in there and it worked without an issue, so I guess my one of the new HDDs is simply defective. Do you have any thoughts on that?

    Hi there, I just recently had a storm at my house and I guess the surge protectors we had, were ummm not quite so protecting. I am pretty sure it is the PCB my drive is not spinning at all. Drive wd40efrx-68wtono.
    I was wondering if I found and removed the removed the diode(s) and got the drive spinning again, could I just connect the drive back to my PC and back up the data? or should I try and find an identical drive and just replace the PCB?
    Thank you very much for your video!

      Also, this may be a dumb question but I have a PCB from a different WD drive. The drives are completely different in specs, but the PCB is same shape, connections, and so on...I know its not same drive so I am not sure what the firmware would do to drive from that PCB.

    Scrub a copper penny with a pencil eraser, then look at the tarnish a week or month later. Also touching the cleaned contact with oily fingers will cause contact problems later. Maybe good for return repair later, easy scrub head preamp contacts again to fix until next return..

    • @hddrecoveryservices
      @hddrecoveryservices  8 лет назад +1

      Paul Archer Paul at this point your best bet would be to locate an identical PCB part number and swap out the eeprom chip from your failed board to a new working one. That will adapt the new board to work with your hard drive. I don't go beyond troubleshooting the diodes on these when it comes to failed/shorted boards because my inventory of donors is really good and it is just way easier to pull the donor than try to figure out what is wrong on component level.

    Hi HDD. My Samsung D3 External Drive 12 V adapter cord was accidently cut (got caught in a door) I had just used the device and it was working perfectly fine. A friend suggested that I buy a new adapter on Amazon. In the meantime I went to Radio Shak and in-store the sales guy inserted a universal adapter on 12 V setting. It did not work and immediately the drive started to smell from the vents. A slight burning scent of course. I eventually got the old adapter cord repaired by an electrician. Now the Light to the front is just blinking, the HD is not spinning and the computer is not reading the HD.
    I am desperate! What do you think occurred? Sounds like a deaf PCB. I have a lot of important Client files on the drive. I need your help
