- In this episode we take a look at some of the subtleties and subtext in Final Fantasy VIII that are often overlooked on first playthroughs. Whether serving as sidequests or discreetly building out our ideas of certain characters, the attention to detail in Final Fantasy VIII is one of the most intriguing things about it, ensuring it's discussed to this day.

One character to pay detailed attention to on repeat playthroughs is Headmaster Cid. On the first playthrough he seems like a bumbling clown who lacks judgment and makes poor decisions (lets put this kid in charge of our entire Garden! Let's send these kids down to the basement to fight oil monsters and help the Garden take flight! Take this demon-possessed magic lamp - just because!). Once you realize he's aware of the timeline in place it's much more obvious why he does what he does. When Squall wonders why Cid put him in charge, Cid can't explain his reasoning. He'd sound insane. "Yeah there's a Sorceress from the future and my wife is possessed you see!". He feigns incompetence to explain his actions.
Absolutely agree. Another thing I noted and discussed awhile back is how Cid is significant in Seifer's role in the game too... many wonder why Seifer has been Squad B captain for the SeeD exams (apparently more than once), and the head of Disciplinary Committee etc. Reading between the lines it seems Cid is giving Seifer every chance to succeed, perhaps even a bit of preferential treatment, or considering your point, perhaps he's giving him responsibility to try and give a sense of belonging so he doesn't join the sorceress.. I'm not sure, but Cid is certainly interesting in how he quietly influences events.
I could listen to details and flourishes in FF games forever. Each game’s world is so complete and well painted it’s nice to just stroll through them like this and take in the brush strokes
For me, it’s all the speculation about cut stories and content due to timelines and hardware constraints. Especially 8.
before i watch this i just wanna say im super happy people are talking about this game even today
Yea same here with the big screen in Timber. I didn't notice it until the remaster as well, it's a really cool little inclusion. This was my favorite game growing up too and it hit me hard hearing you talk about playing in your room with your little 12" CRT haha. I had the same little set up on my dresser back in in the 90s, and looking back now it wasn't much but I couldn't have asked for more at the time.
Yep sounds familiar. It was good times. I miss that TV 🙂
Those were the days😊
I'll never forget my first time hearing the town music for Timber

wow, I knew it was because of Adel's tomb but I didn't know it was actually her sending messages.
Had to google it but these are the messages I found on a wiki
I AM ALIVE HERE
BRING ME BACK THERE
I WILL NEVER LET YOU FORGET ABOUT ME
I WILL NEVER LET YOU BOUND ME BACK
Haha yeah the first time I found that out, made Adel even creepier than she normally is. When Ultimecia possesses Rinoa in space and has her release Adel so she falls into the Lunar Cry, generally very creepy moment.
Yep. Loved the Library Girl with a Pigtail sidestory. I found it myself, too. Such a nice touch to the Balamb Garden atmosphere.
Seifer having a bigger connection with Laguna than Squall is something I've always found really interestng. And one of the reasons why I think Seifer is the most fleshed out character in the game.
Great video! I never knew that you could go back to the dog in Dollet!
Final Fantasy 8 was my favorite game of all time. It's so unique to the Final Fantasy universe. I liked the other games, but I could never relate to them like I could to Squall. It feels like it was made with alot of passion.
I just finished a play through of FF8, I love the lore in the game. One thing I wish we got to learn more about was Adel, she’s such an imposing and interesting character. I wish we found out who we were actually fighting when Adel junctioned Rinoa to herself, because (to me at least) it’s not clear that it’s either Adel or Ultimecia possessing Adel. I lean towards saying you’re fighting Adel directly because every time you fight Ultimecia (including when possessing Edea) the theme “premonition” plays, but with Adel, it is the standard boss theme; though that could have been because “premonition” is used directly after that fight when fighting the sorceresses during time compression, maybe they just didn’t wanna use the theme twice in a row. Then again….you hear the standard boss them in Lunatic Pandora 4 times (Fujin/Raijin, Mobile Type B, Seifer and Adel, so who knows lol).
Dr. Odine specifically warns what an awful event it would be if Adel/Ultimecia were to interact.
Ultimecia’s castle remains my favourite final dungeon in the series tied with Kefka’s Tower from FF6. As well as Ultimecia and Kefka (both 4 stage final bosses) being my fav final battles, both have amazing battle themes.
Anyway, great video.
Welcome back, Jack! 💙💙
Thank you, sir. I'll endeavour to stop life getting in my way with this channel :D
I beat this again last week and did almost everything. I miss it already.
FF8 has flaws, plenty of flaws, but you can tell it was made with passion. Despite the flaws, there is a lot to love about it.
the problem of this game is bacause they rush it along with FF9 as they are being made at the same time because of the popularity of FF7
We are going to get this 8k!
Love listening to you talk about these games!
Thank you, glad you enjoy it 🙏
Love all side quests. I hope i will see in my liftime a FF8-2 one day...
Well spoken delivery. Insightful content. Interesting subject matter. These are bingeable videos that will grow over time.
Thank you sir, glad you are enjoying them
Another reason why it’s the best FF game
I never got into FF until this year with 16 and absolutely loved it, so I’ve made it my mission to play through every game. I always wanted to since like 2011 but just never gotten around to it somehow.
Played through a lot of them and got to 8 and was skeptical given the hate this game has received over the years. I’ll be real, I was not into this game at all for the first 2 hours or so it just felt off to me, but once I understood the mechanics I came to love it. Now i’ve not only finished it but platinumed it and this is probably my favourite game in the entire series. It is just so expertly crafted in every field and the attention to details are incredible. I never would’ve picked up on most things mentioned in this video on my own. Love the content man, keep it up!
Glad you've got into the series and particularly given FF8 a second chance and enjoyed it, it's hard to go back and try again after a bad first impression :D
FFVIII is a game I have yet to finish, but this makes me kind of want to go back to it because I was really quite interested in the story and lore. I admit I'm one of those people who found the gameplay really overwhelming and had a hard time taking to it. I felt like I was starting to get the hang of it but had a negative interaction with a fan of the game who more or less insulted my intelligence for not playing it in the most efficient way possible. It sounds silly probably, but it kind of turned me off wanting to play for a while and the longer I stay away, the harder it is to go back.
Debating whether once I finish my replay of FFVII Remake I should pick back up from where I left off or start from the beginning. I was over 20 hours in, but I do think I would do a few things differently if I started again.
The good thing about modern re-releases of the PS1 FF games is they added in features that allow you to just breeze through them if you just want the story. Invincibility in combat, no random encounters, fast forward. If you just want to experience the story, just turn them on and have a quick, relaxing playthrough.
@@fattiger6957 It's not that I really minded the challenge. I enjoy the interactivity of games and feeling like I'm part of the action. I just sorta... got discouraged for a while.
I have VII and VIII on Switch though and I do like being able to toggle on and off random encounters. There's nothing I hate more than being lost or being in the middle of trying to figure something out and constantly being thrown into fights lol.

In this segment where Irvine is asking "Where is everyone?" is something I still can't understand - where is everyone in this scene, really? If we go to this place any other time, there will always be some NPCs like the drunk guy and the young lady walking around. But in this segment they're all gone somewhere and the game forces us to notice it with this phrase from Irvine. I've played through this bit a number of times, but this is still a mistery to me. Did they all go help to build the stage for the upcoming band performance? But Irvine would know about that and wouldn't be acting so surprised.
If you go into the inn on that street & check out the TV news, it will be talking about a “scary guy with a gun” prowling around town & how people are avoiding him. Irvine then says something to the effect of “gee, I hope I don’t run into this guy!” Not realizing, of course, that he is him.
@@fullmoonfever6189 holy shit this game never ceases to amaze me. I’m always like “I know everything about ff8” and then there’s instantly something new. Never knew about that, thank you!
I love FF8. It’s shocking to me how people either love it or hate it. 10 is my fav, and honestly 7 and 8 are tied for second.
Any FF8 content is good content.
Agreed
More than anything else about this game, I loved the connection Laguna had with the characters of the story. Basicly it depicted in a very detailed and artistic way how anybodys life can truly have meaning. At least that was my takeaway 🤍
