  • In today's episode we look at the increasingly discussed and ever fluctuating prospects of an FF8 Remake, the historic fortunes of the title, and the wildly varying opinions that surround it.
    The most controversial aspect by far has historically been the junction system which has been suggested as switching out to an affinity system, or an alternative altogether, but nontheless remains integral to the FF8 story and the lore of the game world, so cannot be removed entirely. Here we breakdown the potential workarounds and other issues fans, and now the developers seem to have with the entry. In the episode linked below we recommend alternatives to the junction system:

      Alleyway Jack. Great vid, as usual from you.
      The Junction Crybabies are ridiculous 😅. You have a choice to make a game easier, and you choose to make the game easier, that's on you. No one calls Mario a bad game because they chose to jump into the clouds on the 2nd level and skip to the end.
      With the original 8, you had to go out of your way to exploit the Junction system. Whether it's with card conversions, or drawing magic for hours. The fact that a player "chose" to donate hours and hours of their time, rather than just play the game straight through is their choice. I will never understand fans who cry about exploiting a game. They act like Square held them at gunpoint and forced them to exploit the Junction system. They chose to do it😂, then complained the game was too easy.
      Well, if you exploit a game, rather than playing it straightforward, of course it's going to be easier.
      Fans just complaining just for the sake of complaining.

    FF8 is my personal favorite FF game and still holds up to this day. FF8 is the inception of FF games, in the sense that the story is not only eerie but incredibly mysterious & multi layered. FF8 also has the most interesting fan theories and because the story is filled with so much mystique and eerieness, most of the fan theories can be correct. This doesn't even count the fact that it was way ahead of it's time graphically. The haters back then haven't aged well at all, calling Squall emo from the childhood he had is so goofy & if Squall is emo what is Cloud ? The character designs in FF8 is also so incredibly innovative & unique, the music is insanely innovative as well.
    Most of the hate FF8 got simply came imo from the linear FF fans. These are the people that were so hype off of FF7 that when FF8 came out, being worlds apart and totally different from FF7. I believe that linear audience started blindly hating on it & in a lazy artistic way. It's like when fans get upset at a band when they decided to try new things. There is an audience out there that just want the same carbon copy of what they loved over & over again. FF8 is now getting so much love in the same way Andrew Garfield from Spider Man is getting love now, even though FF8 sold very well in its time & the remastered didn't do bad either. I love FF7 to death but Square has been over milking FF7 since the early 2000's lol. If i see a FF8 remake trailer in the next 10 years, i'm going to shed heavy nerd tears lol

      I love FF8 but can’t deny it has some serious flaws. Many things don’t make sense about the story, the customisation - while novel and creative - is extremely abusable, leveling up has the literal opposite effect; making you weaker relative to enemies instead of stronger and more.
      You can love a game while accepting people do have good reasons to dislike it.

    I first played FF8 in 2008 when I was 16, can honestly say I enjoyed the game more then 7. I remember back when I was a kid when FF7 was new, this was the first FF game for a lot of people and I remember when 8 came out people assumed it would be a sequel to 7 and when they realized it had nothing to do with 7 they instantly disliked 8 without giving it a fair chance. From memory there was something similar with 10 where it was a first FF game for a bunch of people (with new console gen) that when 12 came along they hated it without giving it a chance.

    I love FF8 and the junction system and I will die on that hill. Don't like the lengthy junction tutorial? You could already skip it in the OG. Don't want to learn junctioning? Just use auto junction for everything. Under the premises of "modern gaming" I don't even want a remake. I really loved squalls face in the FMV cutscenes. He was pretty, but not too cute and my dude was rocking a bigger nose. I just loved that kind of individuality. Kinda afraid they would just all look strange to me in a remake somehow. The HD remaster was already kinda wonky with the new models looking kinda anime-y.

    • @alexanderwoodbury5593
      @alexanderwoodbury5593 4 месяца назад +6

      You can die on that hill, but you won’t have to die there alone.
      “I hate the tutorials and I don’t know how the battle system works” is an extremely weak critique - and as you mentioned, you can easily bypass the whole lot. And I know people don’t know how it works because they so often spam summons and/or draw in battle. Yet, they love the card game and never thought about where the two things intersect…
      And this hatred for menus further impacts the players ability to learn more about the world and lore of FFVIII - so few even realize how much there is to be learned from the humble tutorial menus and on the classroom computer. Hell, there’s an entire social media platform that exists in-game!
      I can’t really say if I’m in favor of a remake or not - even if I wasn’t, I’d still probably still buy it anyway. And that’s more than I can say about VII.
      I’m more than content with VIII as it is, where it is.

    • @AlleywayJack
      @AlleywayJack  4 месяца назад +5

      I enjoy junctioning too - but I only discovered you can skip those tutorials by accident on the OG game because I was frustratedly button mashing, I can't remember if it's explicitly stated. I also disliked the remastered character models, FF8 was always appealing to me because of the realistically designed characters - the anime direction was weird and as stated in another comment completely jarred with FMVs.

    • @brandnewborn
      @brandnewborn 4 месяца назад +8

      Character design went in a terrible direction in the remaster. They were happy to apply some Kingdom Hearts infantile vibes over a consistently gorgeous game on its own. A FF8 remake should be done by people who love the original. By the way, I would be happy to see some clever camera angles, like back in the 1990s, instead of having my perspective glued to my main character's neck for 90% of the game. After current tech mastered "open world" design, all worlds started to look the same.

    • @vct454
      @vct454 4 месяца назад +1

    • @Daniel_Rodrigues_89
      @Daniel_Rodrigues_89 4 месяца назад

      I wouldn't say the "classic" games are the ones who need a remake, people usually mention it for nostalgia. 2D games age much better than 3D ones in general (particularly early 3D). That, and if you consider a remake as an oportunity to refine gameplay and story elements while using the same basic world and settings (like 7 did) - 8 actually may be the one to benefit from it the most, since its gameplay is usually the most criticized in the franchise (along 2, maybe).
      People love the world of FF8 with its school/army setting, the importance of GFs, the rivalry thing and the Laguna parts - and we all know that Squall is one of the most popular characters in the franchise. Updating the mechanics like the juction and the drawing systems to something more modern is actually the perfect reason for a remake.
      And to be honest, unlike stuff like Midgar feeling underused in the OG and the whole FF7 compilation leaving many stories untold, the whole FF8 concept being wasted by "poor gameplay" according to many people, or even the entirety of FF15 multimedia project from what I've heard, I don't think older games really feel like they had any unused potential to explore. They are pretty much complete, even if they look outdated from a technical perspective. Maybe a remaster or 2D-HD "remake" would be more than enough for what people who ask for it really want.

I played FF6 very late, after 13, and I think a remake, maybe in a sense of FF4 would be a great thing for FF6, more than it would for FF8. The PSX era btw is at his point nostalgia too. I would love a FFVIII remake more than anything but it seems fairly unlikely given Square Enix’s history with the game. It’s been like this lost child following its release. It was the last to get a remaster on modern consoles. Let’s hope though with the success of the VII Remake project, they see the potential in doing this.

    I feel like FF7 and FFX are pretty much the series' favorites to the point where they've reached outside the core Final Fantasy fanbase. I think we'd see a remake of FFX long before 8, but personally, and I'm saying this as someone who has started but has never been able to finish them, FF8 and FF9 would be amazing if they were given the same remake treatment that 7 is getting. I was never able to finish 8, but I remember starting over several times just to watch that amazing intro, which remains the best opening of a Final Fantasy game, in my opinion. It's got the style, that's for sure. I also think FF9 has such a charming art style as well.

    As much as I’d love to see remakes, I feel confident saying we will never get another full scale remake for any FF game, not just 8. It takes way too long and too much money to make those old games to modern scale. Especially if the ff7 remake trilogy is any indication. 7 is so big that it’s the only game that can get away with it. I would really like to see a remake though. Even though Squall is one of my favorite final fantasy protagonists, the rest of the main cast is fairly shallow. Seifer could also use a lot more focus and development after disc 1. To me, FF8 is a great Squall character study, but it could be a lot more if other characters were more developed.

    • @Daniel_Rodrigues_89
      @Daniel_Rodrigues_89 4 месяца назад +5

      Well, maybe I'm being optimistic, but I don't feel FF7 should be used as an example of scale. It's basically the most popular game in the franchise (and one of the most popular games of all times), so much in fact that it became an entire subfranchise with the whole FF7 compilation. No other FF game did it at this level, and even if Kitase did mention that a possible FF6 remake would simply take too long, I wouldn't expect any other FF remake to be ambitious to the point of becoming a freaking trilogy, unless they try to pull a Hobbit on us. If you consider a remake project taking as long as a single chapter from 7R, or even a little longer, it still sounds a little more reasonable.
      And I completely agree. FF8 would benefit so much from a remake. Exploring the Squall/Seifer rivalry better, the whole "Garden" setting, the underdeveloped characters, expanding the Laguna sessions... And don't even mention a complete gameplay overhaul, by far the most criticized part of the original game. Can you imagine what they could do with the freaking gunblade alone? Or being able to control the GFs on a action/turn-based hybrid battle system?

Just exchange "lifestream" with "draw points" (naturally occuring magic). Junctioning could be implemented as somekindof magic-therapy by a machine that garden has developed, a parallel to mako-therapy that produces SOLDIERs in ff7.

    FF8 was my favorite game of all time, and still probably is with regard to nostalgia. I remember playing the game when I was like only 11 or 12 years old for the first time. At first I had no idea how to junction and I just went into the training center because I figured fighting some monsters would help me understand how the game works. I ended up just attacking the plant monsters over and over until I died. But about the 2nd or 3rd time I played the game as a kid, I started to understand the junction system. Fast forward some years, and I discovered that the game was pretty easy once you understood how to break the junction system. It got to the point that the game was TOO EASY, with the exception of Omega Weapon.
    I never understood how older teenagers and adults struggled so much with the junctioning system when I learned it as a little kid who never even played an RPG in my life. But I digress. I don't play any of the new game consoles out now, but if FF8 remake came out, I would literally buy a new console just for that game, and play the crap out of it lol.
    As to remaking the Junction system, I feel like it wouldn't be that complicated. Streamline it to make it simple to understand for casuals, where junctioning Ifrit could just raise your ATK automatically and give you Fire magic or something. Each Summon would grant little special perks, and could learn extra perks,etc. Maybe give some visual effect changes too, like Squall having a glowing red aura or maybe his Gunblade has a new flaming animation to it,etc.

    I will always respect what Square tried to do with FFVIII, the ambition was enormous. A lot of its downfall came from execution problems, both mechanically and narratively. Not that the story is bad, it actually isn't, but it has structural problems that are often present with amnesia plotlines. It came across overly artificial, making the reveal feel more like a deus ex machina than an organic extension of the larger narrative.
    If anything, FFVIII is the most deserving of all FF games for a remake. This would allow Square to fix the issues that held the original back. But in doing so, the junction system would likely have to be removed or drastically overhauled. The same would have to happen with the weapons and armor upgrade system.

The Ff8's party members didn't experience the Lightning Returns, End of world vibes and "u go and kill god" vibes that 13 trilogy had... Much better they remake 13 rather than 8. It kind of already did get a remake in that the source code was long gone when the time came to do the remaster so it was more or less exactly recreated but with improved textures and models. The only thing that was really missing from that release was a retranslation of the script to balance out the compromises that were made in the 90s when the translation team was undermanned and on a tight deadline. Character personalities (especially Squall, who is supposed to be more reserved and unavailable than semi-hostilely abrasive) can be realigned with the Japanese version. I love FF8, but the 90s had a lot of issues with localization from the publisher driven censorship present in the SNES era games to the simple reality of the constraints of the job affecting the final product in the PS1 era (remember how Aerith's name was just translated wrong in the PS version of FF7?).
    TLDR just patch the existing remaster with a newly retranslated script and make sure the team has enough time to bring it up to as faithful as possible rather than just as serviceable as could have been expected from the circumstances.

    to remake the junction system how about this, You take control of each GF when you summon it, and you have to perform various moves like street fighter with key inputs and perform them successfully several times in order to unlock other abilities, these can even need to be performed at specific times and to specific enemies, they could make it really cryptic like you have to find the knowledge on your brain through memories in order to figure out the moves for each GF, make it a deepdive into the memories of the GF itself even, each with their own story which you have to unlock in order to fully access their abilities.

It's just gonna be a hot minute because FF7 Remake has to finish and I think FF6 is already scheduled to be next up by Square-Enix.

    the problem with 8 is , you have to collect all the spells in the game to be strong , but the mage trope from forever tells you , use magic (contra productive unless at the endgame) , back them i got near the end in a unplayable status , then i restarted and became a super OP killing machine , besides that the game is great , one of my favorites

    I'm one of those people who has beaten the entire back catalog of FF games and FFVIII is my second favorite of the franchise.
    I loved the junction system and, very honestly, have no clue why anyone finds it "hard to understand." It's very simple and only takes a little bit of time messing around with it to get it. This was actually the third FF I ever beat, and I beat it when it launched, so I was only 12 years old at the time. I had no problems with the junction system, at all. It literally took me about 20 minutes of messing around with it to understand how it worked. The very fact that there are adults out there today that find it "difficult" says far more about them than it does about the game.
    The battle system is also one of the best of all the FF games. They implemented so many things that made it better than FFVII's. The dynamic limit breaks, being able to boost your summons, having summons take damage for you while the ATB gauge is winding down, the draw system (which I actually always liked), etc. I get that some people don't like the draw system because it allows you to "break" the game, but no one is forcing anyone to do that. In fact, what it's allowing you to do is adjust the games difficulty in real time so that you can play how you like. What other FF allows you to do that?
    GF's being able to level up and learn abilities is another excellent mechanic.
    The card system, and Triple Triad, are also amazing.
    The story, characters and world are also exceptional. I definitely would've liked more back story on certain aspects of the plot but, besides that, I loved it.
    And I don't think I even need to go into the soundtrack, of which is the second best in the franchise.
    There's a reason it's one of the best selling FF's of all time, and why it has a 9/10 on Steam and a 90 Metacritic score.

    I would be down for an FF8 remake in the same vein as FF7, that there's something a bit off with the story. It was once mentioned that the creators heard of the "Squall is dead" theory and while they debunked it, they quite liked it. I would be interested to see this fan theory potentially come full circle into a remake and maybe we see something surprising in where the story goes.

    I haven't played this game since it's release, but I loved the look, feel, and story of this game. I've always thought it was an underrated game that suffered from being the follow up to FFVII.

    A remake of FF6 or FF8 would be the best. They’re old and can be reworked into awesome games now since they were already good stories/worlds.

    Considering the rebuild of evangelion take 7 remake/birth took I think 8 could have done it better since it was a time travel story and with ultimecia being of the future there was always a chance of her return.
    Especially if you subscribe to Roko’s basilisk and only imagine what she’d do with a time singularity.

    You can solve the Junction System problem with one move. Remove the Card Refine ability. Make players have to draw from enemies and draw points to stock magic, make them have to earn items to refine on the battlefield. Triple Triad and Card Refine is the pipeline to breaking the game, take that away and it gets much harder.

    While I would love a remake a la 7, I don't think they'll make one. However, there's plenty of mods to scratch that remake itch. And hopefully soon the full voice-over mod will be completed as well. The demo is already mind-blowing

    If they did do a remake they would have to change the draw system, maybe have it so you cant draw spells from enemies apart from to single use on them, have you gain magic not by drawing but by enemy drops

    You come off as saying ‘junction system is integrated to the core of FF8 and people didn’t like it, it was not a well design system, Kitase is sensitive about junction critique as FF8 is his baby, Kitase has use time compression in FF7RE already’. If that’s what you intended convey as reasons to why SE is unlikely to remake FF8, I do agree to a degree, though there are significant and obvious counter points to support FF8 remake based on your points, instead of discrediting the possibility of it.
    First, as SE defined clearly, FF7RE is the first mainline FF remake instead of remaster, just from play FF7RE, I would challenge you to present a strong case of an aspect of the game that is not retooled or outright changed. Battle system completely changed to semi real time action, material system retooled, weapon upgrade sphere grids thing added seemingly for the hell of it. What reservations do you have SE wouldn’t at minimum retool junction and draw? In order to fit the world and plot?
    Secondly, you seem to present Kitase (or SE as a whole) sensitivity to negative feedback would prevent them from remaking a game or making changes. How did you reach that interpretation? There are degrees of changes and control of what they want to do. Take FF7RE, people wanted a remake, no one wanted the story to be rewritten, they put up with it as it is intriguing. Kitase and Nomura made the conscious decision to change some fundamentals of the story as they want, irrespective of potential critique, to be fair they also inserted the whispers possibly as audience stand ins to qualm those sentiments, however you take it. Their method of FF7RE serves as a concrete example that essentially nothing is sacred to not be changed. So you think junction system with ties to the plot or world building is hindering the remake? That would feel like your head canon.
    Lastly, about time compression concepts pulled from FF8, used in FF7RE, so it would seem like reusing concepts if they remake FF8 so they’re unlikely to do it. I would posit a few questions. Do you consider alternate realities the same as concepts involving time? Do you consider time compression the same as other 2 concepts? You seem to regard them as all the same, or at least too similar to the general audience. Do you think Nomura/Kitase wanted to rewrite FF7 so they inserted time loop/compression concept, or did they write in a time compression/loop concept because they wanted to use said concept? It’s a chicken or the egg question, understandably, though it is fair to interpret the situation based on their public statements. They wanted to rewrite FF7 to their liking, so they wrote in some mechanism to somewhat make it work, instead of Kitase just pulling a concept from another work of his because he’s in love with it. Let’s also no discount Nomura’s writing style from what we observed in Kindom Hearts series, he’s prone to convoluted plotlines.
    A point to consider is the narrative FF9 retro homage is significantly more beloved than the odd modern middle child FF8, so it’s obvious FF9 would take priority to remake ahead of FF8. It’s a good narrative, I’m for it, it’s clear you are for it as well. The only thing I’m pointing out is there are other better points you could have made to strengthen your position.
    FF7RE was a foregone conclusion since the compilation, Advent Children, and the endless production of merch. No other FF entry has as much expansion, cultural zeitgeist, and lucrative profit opportunity. SE knows when they’re coming to a rough patch, they can always go back to FF7 well instead of creating solid FF entries without chasing trend (whereas they used to set trends). As for every other mainline FF, SE gives them remasters to test the market to assess if they can justify the investment of a remake. There are better points to make against FF8 remake and for FF9 remake.

    If they're gonna go adult direction like FF16 did, they might as well go ham with this since this installment is among the darkest. If they can get a writer/director that can touch up real grim and grey issues like ones found on FF tactics, they could put it here. I would be very interested even if it's chopped up like the FF7 remakes; Just make the long hours of playing the game interesting and engaging.
    I really think Squall is a very misunderstood character too; People were too quick to judge a person with severe abandonment issues.

    They should remake 7 , 8 , 9 .. the golden era square soft masterpieces.
    Using the ff7 remake combat system, just adapting to ff8 junction (make mp a things, just draw for magic to accumulated and using to increase your stat, but you can use in battle with mp, leave the summon ap system to create build, and add Seed job system to customize your characters like Gunblader or monk etc etc) more air combat system and please give us interactive renzokuken! Like in the ff8 og, low health and limit break spamming for fun, enemies like in ff7 remake with a lot of def and health.
    What do you think guys?

    FF8 is my favorite in the series and I hope they never remake it. My first play through was less than two years ago, and I can tell you with no nostalgia that this game does not need to be modernized or updated. So many games in this series are bogged down by sequels, movies, and other supplemental material. Can we please just let this one incredible game stand on its own?

    This was actually my favorite FF game. FF7 had the cool factor but I loved the gameplay of FF8. There is nothing like equipping a 1000 deaths in my sword. Doing a break limit is even more awesome.
    Also, a lot of ppl sleep on what I consider to be the best mini game. Triple Triad was so addictive. They will remake it one day but the time isn't right.
