- In this episode I take a look at the divisive character of Selphie in Final Fantasy VIII.
For the upcoming Redcoat Q&A, ask me anything:

Introduced as the upbeat cutesy SeeD member, this Final Fantasy 8 analysis considers the underlying insecurities and wider role Selphie plays in the game, along with her blossoming relationship with the equally dubious Irvine Kinneas.
In this Final Fantasy VIII retrospective I discuss:
- Selphie Tilmitt's origins
- Trabia Garden
- Selphie and Irvine
- Selphie and Squall
- The Garden Festival Committee

That moment when you realize Square made a character with an internet blog in 1999 and named her Selfie 0.o Earliest usage of that phrase is 2002.
My favorite character in this game. She's honestly the most powerful when it comes to her limit breaks (even predicting the ending shot of the game with "The End" limit).
The way Selphie was introduced into the game was so Iconic and she has one of the best designs and outfits in all of FF for me. She is one of the main reasons I want to go back and fully complete the game this time lol.
Her intro FMV was great! :D
think it was also Selphie's idea to keep a diary as a countermeasure for the memory loss caused by the GF.
Super underrated character, honestly.
Selphie, Zell and Squall... Best squad in this game. She's my fave character and a big teen crush back in the day.
Much to my fault, I hardly use Selphie in the party when I first play the game. But now playing the remastered, i gained new appreciation for the character. Normally when we compare characters, Squall and Seifer comes to mind as the yin and yang. I notice that the same can be said with Squall and Selphie
1. Squall is male and Selphie is female.
2. Squall wears dark tones while Selphie wears bright clothings
3. Squall is an in-student while Selphie is a transfer student.
4. Squall is serious while selphie is cheerful.
5. Squall demonstrates physical attacks while selphie deals with Magic.
In some ways, Squall and Selphie have the same fear... the fear of being alone. However they have different ways of dealing with it. Squall cope with this by shutting people down while Selphie cope by having friends around. This actually reflect in their Triple Triad card. Squall's and Selphie's TDLR (top down left right) numbers reflect this.
SQUALL: A-6-9-4 (TDLR)
SELPHIE: A-6-4-8 (TDLR)
Squall's and Selphie's TD are the same because the foundation of their character (experience of loneliness and brilliancy) are strikingly similar while their LR are nearly opposite which signify how they deal with the hand (problem) they are given.
Selphie's Limit Break slot is interesting. It's casting magic without the need of drawing/expending para-magic. My guess is that it had something to do with the forgotten Guardian Force she junction when she was a kid.
I can only speculate that this 'forgotten gf' have something to do with Time because essentially The End is a build in meta spoiler for the game.
Also an interesting fact. That besides Squall, Selphie is the only other character you can max out Hit% stat without junctioning an magic
I love Selphie! I had her in my party always in my favorite FF8 playthrough :)
AWESOME! The original queen of Social Media!
If she was just to be taken at face value, a cheerful, always positive kind of person, I'd most likely just ignore her (then again, I absolutely adore Laguna, who shares those same traits, so... who knows), but her dark side made her one of my favourites. The contrast is interesting and funny, while adding layers of character that actually make sense given her history. I never thought she was joking about skinning the moombas or blowing things up, more like manifesting a part of her personality that she keeps in check well enough, because she is a social person, but that sometimes shows at the surface. She makes a bit of sociopathy extremely endearing! :)
> 'She makes a bit of sociopathy extremely endearing'... So true :)
On the last point you make, one thing that's quite interesting is Selphie's blogging stuff is probably more a reference to stuff like Geocities culture, the whole practice of upkeeping a personal website which was pretty much killed off by the rise of the social media giants. It's possible that Selphie was a snapshot of this niche culture of kids writing their lives online, accidentally taken at the exact moment before it suddenly became the dominant form of culture in the modern world.
Good call. Yeah you're right and I do recall the world of angelfire, geocities, blogger etc in the days before the web got unified under google. The Japanese were ahead of the game with this sort of thing too. There's a Japanese photographer called Hiromix who was exhibiting instagram style selfies back in 1997 which weirdly pre-empted the next decade in the west, so that all helps explain why Selphie was weirdly prescient I guess!
I like her final move that has the censorship screen
Selphie is my favorite FFVIII character and she's definitely the best girl in there
Unpopular Opinion : I wish Squall would date Selphie instead of Rinoa
My friend used to hate Selphie. I absolutely loved her.
It's amazing how much world-building is in FF8 but most people won't notice because they have to backtrack to Squall's PC every time there's new things to see (like Selphie's blogs) and there's no real indicator of this given to the player (like a beeper tone or pop-up like games would start doing more in later years). You just have to go check (which sometimes requires realizing you can go check, since the game gives you every indication that you never need to go back to the classroom after getting your GFs [not to mention that you have to go all the way back to Fisherman's Horizon after Disc 2 and realize that you can go back inside the Garden]). It was ages before I was told that I could actually go back inside the school and just assumed that you were locked out. Other things include how Winhill and Dollet give many indicators that they're story-only locations but they're actually near the Timber-Galbadia Garden area and D-District prison, respectively, which means that you can actually go visit them when you're in those areas for story reasons. I get hiding side quests, but Final Fantasy wasn't really known for expecting you to go find random town for sidequests all that often (barring a couple of places that you needed an airship to get to) and these areas are also part of the world-building. I'm torn between the lack of indication of these things and how cool it is that all of these details exist to be discovered.
Something I thought about--Squall is closed off and introverted, but he secretly wants to have people in his life he can call his friends. Zell and Selphie, his core SeeD team, are perfect for him because they have personalities that would ensure that they don't give up on Squall despite his initially cold behavior. Even moreso than Rinoa at first, considering how her frustrations with him come to a head at Fisherman's Horizon.
Irvine:Ah💝Hey💖Selfie!? Where's Ma' 🤠Hat🤠!?
...and she invented Facebook.
Relm, Yuffie, Selphie, Eiko and Rikku, Later games just don't nail the archetype like they do. Yuffie was my first (And still favorite FF character) but since then I always gravitated to the upbeat comedic girls rather than stoic I want to bang the male lead types.
I really liked Vanille to personally I think she is underrated and one of the best at it.
Interesting observation. It turns out the selfie word was coined in Japan 1994. It's likely the name Selphie came from the selfie word Japan coined in 1994.
This isn't true, since "selfie" is not actually a Japanese word and its first recorded use was in 2002. You're probably thinking of purikura (those booths where you take photos), which were created in 1994, but the actual term "selfie" wasn't around at that point.
The only normal character that has a move that can destroy anything. (Yunas summon and Cait sith being the other two)
Selphie's lines and jokes were to me the funniest things in FF8. Cracked when she was dissing Rinoa's train model.
She's this sligthly crazy girl type with no social situation sensitivity.
There's similar character in New Girl series who comes up always with completely over the sensible norm solutions to things.
And I never thought that Selphie would directly jokingly say things like "and then we hit the train with the rocket launcher!". But just out of pure 'slight' psychoness and energy+enthusiasm. Also when Rinoa is gone and they're moving with Edea.. something like "Comeone, everybody, we're going to save Rinoa, and we're going to have fun!". She's really forcing the fun in crazy manner, if not with a smile, then with grin.
Her flying the Ragnarok was the only natural flyer to me :P
Yeah that was great dialogue,
"It symbolises how much I hate the president"
"You must really hate him" 😂
That was pretty funny about the train. 😂
Selphie very so glad about good Helpful things is Gf Summon Bahamut gave me all times!
Selphie Tilmitt is the creator of selfies. Way before the trend in 2002, FF VIII did it before so it predicted the future. Selphie "Selfie" Tilmitt.
Well tbh
I find her cute and adorable
I wonder how the game would be if Tidus was in FF8 instead of Squall?
Bahamut:Yes U Deserve It##️⃣
😼😸😻Nutty-Cubbies:I👁️C👁️It!! I👁️Eat😼It!!💖❤️🔥#️⃣
Selfie Deserves Some Cred4️⃣4For Inventing Facebook##️⃣
In reality, she invented selfies 3 years before the trend in 2002. FFVIII Fact: Her hair was created from Peggy March.
She created MySpace before Tom 😂
selphie is a pyromaniac like jessie from ff7.
instead of getting to romance the best girl selphie, we are forced in an unwanted relationship with seifer's sloppy seconds. it's the only thing i hate about ff8.
Selphie is one of my favorites.
