  • In this episode I look at Irvine, the Garden sharpshooter and hapless ladies man.
For the upcoming Redcoat Q&A, ask me anything:
    forms.gle/bgrfaKRc2LxcUyzB9
Introduced as the cool, reserved Galbadian SeeD member, this Final Fantasy 8 analysis considers Irvine as the final party member we obtain and his dubious relationship with the others - culminating in a surprising reveal during the Trabia Garden Basketball Scene.
In this Final Fantasy VIII retrospective I discuss:
    - Irvine Kinneas origins
    - Galbadia Garden
    - Selphie and Irvine
    - Irvine and Squall
    - The sorceress assassination mission

Yeah, that scene of Rinoa pushing Irvine down those stairs always puts a smile on my face!

It's funny, Irvine is one of my favorite FF characters b/c his facade is what I want to be, but his true self is what I actually am.

I kinda didn't put 2 and 2 together like that either, but it makes sense.

I feel like Flo from FH is related to Irvine, maybe even his mother.
Each character card's are obtain from some one significant to them
    Quistis - Quistis Groupies
    Zell - Ma Dintch
    Selphie - Selphie's Bestfriend
    Rinoa - General Caraway
    Squall - Laguna
    Irvine - Flo?!
Seems suspicious not to be related.

Huh. I never realized that. It would make sense since they both share the same opinion on war and violence. Also Seifer's card is held by Cid, so maybe he's Edea's son (which would partially explain why he becomes her "knight", and why he was such a brat at the orphanage).

Pretty interesting! I've played this game countless times and never thought about the Irvine/Flo connection -- or the character card one either.

I liked Irvine right away and, as a result, I took every opportunity to do things involving him so that helped me see more of his back story. Thank you for this video.

Thanks Christine. Yeah I was the same actually, I always liked Irvine. I think a lot of replayability comes from being able to switch the party around and see different interactions during that playthroughs too :)

Knew and felt all that about Irvine from play through one. What I wanna know is why out of everyone, Squall doesn't remember Irvine at all. And I detest Rinoa even more for shoving him down the stairs. Then acting as if Irvine wanted to leave them, when he was just getting rid of the odd man out by putting her in a safe place. He would have gone back to the others to bail them out. Someone who came out guns blazing despite a could have been injury from being shoved down metal stairs is no coward. If they remake FF8 I hope they do justice by Irvine, and don't try to upsell the gross and rushed relationship of Squall and Rinoa. It ruined the game. Had it been Quistis set up in all the places or romance where the nobody Rinoa was this game would have been one of the greats. Because the song Eyes on Me was for Laguna and Julia would have made more sense with Squall and Quistis.
She does tease him playfully, he would have missed her voice etc had Quistis fallen into a paramagic coma. Having all these things placed on random Rinoa was just dumb. Giving the player options to reject her just to shove them together anyway was dumb. Rinoa could have been in the game but she should have been heavily what she was... a character who joined in and was good for battle, a bit of plot, but nothing more.

Quistis is Squalls teacher and sees him as a brother dude thats weird, the whole point was that Rinoa was the only one who didn't grow up with Squall in Edea's house because all those kids see eachother as siblings
