The ending made me so happy for the sole reason that Zell FINALLY gets his hot dogs that he is continuously denied throughout the entire game.

This is my favorite character of all final fantasy because he is a martial artist but not a Kung fu or karate, he maybe is a mixed martial artist, is awesome he stops a train and I need more of him, love him I wait for a game of ff who has a male charismatic character like zell who grows whit the story, and has passion and effort and of corse a mixed martial artist fantasy! love ur video!
Favorite character after Zidane
Zell is a nice guy version of Dutch ( karate kid)
You know, now that I think about it. The character's stat reflect their personality. For example, Quistis base stats have a higher Str than Squall to show that she is authoritive as an instructor. Or like how Rinoa's base stat for level 100 is high because of what she became in the end.
Ever notice Zell's Hit% highest is 253% while the rest of the party can get 255% on Hit-junction?
Maybe that's a reflection of his personality where he has a positive self esteem but he still have small doubt about himself because wheb he was bullied as a kid.
Or maybe because he never get to eat those damn balamb hotdogs thats why his hit% max to 253%
Interesting how they play around with stats and equipment to inform story. I hadn't noticed that one, but on that note I did hear that if you check Cloud's equipment during the Nibelheim flashback the Buster Sword has Pre-emptive materia equipped... which explains how he managed to kill Sephiroth. Crazy details.
I think Zell is such an amazing character in this game. He fits into the idea of companionship and into the setting of a school. He may come off as annoying at first, but he changes and his moments are incredible and show stealing. There isn't much to say about his character arc, but it's worth mentioning and shows more to his character than just one-note.
He was always picked on by the orphanage and always obeys the rules as much as he could. He basically is a soft boy, which contributed to his need for approval. He is really the only one who had a decent upbringing and was inspired to fight by his "grandfather". He believes that family/community is everything since that's the only thing he ever had, hence his tribal tattoo. He trains to fight because he wants to be like his grandfather, much like how Seifer does it to be a knight. They both see through each other that they there to be someone they aren't, but they don't see it in themselves because they are caught up in the fanfare. Zell isn't really like his grandfather, Squall even says he's the opposite. Zell tries to be someone else to escape his insecurities about being weak. This makes him vulnerable to emotions and it's what drives him to reveal garden was behind the president kidnapping. It breaks Zell and he desperately tries getting Squall to say things will be okay, but when Squall offers realism, he gets more depressed and has to live with his mistake and he starts to feel weak. When Zell discovers the supposed execution to Seifer, he reveals more of who he truly is, and understands that Seifer was family too, despite making him look weak, and that he and Seifer weren't too different. Moving forward, Zell shows a lot of respect for Squall, praising him as a messiah when he saved him, for example. He even exclaims that he'll do anything he says, but when Squall shows weakness, he becomes more of actual friend to him. It's the opposite of what Seifer's posse does, letting Seifer do anything despite the repercussions. When Balamb is attack, he does everything in his power to protect his town, the one place where he was truly appreciated, even showing more compassion to his friends by letting them rest. In the orphanage twist, Zell learns his past with Seifer and the truth of his parentage. He becomes sad at this truth, but in the end, he is able to resolve to use GFs despite the repercussions, and fight for his parents. He understands that despite his sad past, his upbringing brought him to being appreciated by many. He learns to embrace that he once was a weak kid who couldn't stand alone and that his friends once thought so the same, but chooses to stay by their side as they now appreciate him, and also fight as someone who wants the best for his friends to be appreciated. He understands Matron is the villain, but chooses to fight anyways for the future. He's able to steer away from the past and finally have a good reason to be like his grandfather, to fight for family. He understands that his family really isn't his family, but he still loves them for changing him and making him a person respected by those who didn't before. He also becomes less fearful and more confident. He stands up to Seifer, and when denied permission to escort Matron, he tries to prove himself that he can protect her. He becomes really helpful and gives info to the group and does special tasks fro them. He doesn't worship Squall as much and connects with him more as a friend instead of being in his face all the time. I really like how they wrote Zell, with his theme of self-confidence and adjusting to adoption well explored. Obviously he is the least developed, but his arc does wonders for the themes of the game and is well-written anyways.
I see a lot of Zell in Zidane, from looks to personality, especially not having a reason to help others. Obviously, Zell doesn't have as great moments as You are Not Alone, but it's makes me happy that if given enough attention, he could've been as well-written as Zidane and gives me faith in a Remake. For what it's worth, Zell's story is relatable and heartwarming and he has a lot of fun moments that rival or surpass Zidane's. Zell made me appreciate this game a lot more, and his character makes Ff8 one of my favorites games of all time.
Squall was always my favourite character throughout my many years of fandom for this game (again, almost 2 decades) However now in my later years I am more swayed by Laguna as a character. My point here is that I've tried to draw parallels with parts of me to the character I most like (as many I assume do) but in all honesty.. if anything I have always been waaaay more Zell than any other FF VIII character and you've made me realize that with this video. It's actually quite ridiculous that I never saw the similarities till now. You have a way of explaining a character that I may never have considered and I love that you're doing so with a game that has been my favorite game for most of my life, and not many have spoken about this game to much extent. I thank you for these videos, I enjoy listening to them whilst animating or doing art. Lastly it has prompted me to attempt a voice impression of Zell, a character I've not yet considered to to do a voice impression on.
Yeah, it's interesting how people relate to different characters. I also relate to some as a reflection of my own personality, but others simply because of their virtues within the story. Laguna is a prime example of that, he's a complete goof, but so perpetually optimistic and inclined towards selflessness, he's awesome.
@@AlleywayJack I look to Laguna for his carefree outlook on things despite all that was negative in his life which was a constant and how he deals with it with a still positive outlook.

Interesting fact, if you don't bring Rinoa to Balamb during the split mission where Selphie's party infiltrates the Missile Base, it's Zell who visits Squall and invites him to basically have a "bro hang out", and he presents the idea as two comrades doing combat training together. Notably, if Squall agrees, after Zell leaves the room, Squall remarks, "Sorry, Zell" to himself, as if Squall can tell that Zell really wants to befriend him, but Squall recognizes that he doesn't yet have the openness to fully accept Zell's friendship. Or, it could be Squall quietly apologizing to Zell in his mind because he thinks Zell has this grand view of him that Squall knows he can't live up to.
It all helps establish this idea that Zell really wants to be Squall's friend, and earn his respect.
This is not meant to be inflammatory, In fact quite the opposite: I've always thought Zell was far more 'interested' in Squall than he was in the pigtail girl.
That can of worms :P The thing that contradicted that for me was the whole Zell/Rinoa/ring episode... but that scenario felt slightly out of place regardless.
Most important facts about Zell Dincht:
1) He's a dum-dum.
2) He loves hotdogs, but never had 1 untill the end of the game.
3) He have a girlfriend. Literally.
4) He's a loyal and good friend.
5) He have loving mother, and idolize his granddfather.
6) He loves classics (Guns in his room).
7) He's a comic relief.
8) He can run the entire earth in the speed of light (Disciple of Flash from DC).
9) He's the only one who escapes the cell in the beginning of the DISC 2.
10) He's a dum-dum. What? I already told that? Okay,

Zell is visually one of the coolest characters and his over the top energy is something I quite share as someone who has ADHD :)
I see a bit of Zidane in Zell. I'm curious to know if Zell is a prototype of Zidane's character. Good spot with the hair color and similar characters throughout the series. I'll have to go back through a see if I can identify some more similarities liked you mentioned.
Yeah it seems Japanese media has its own set of recurring stereotypes and conventions. It's not something I'd noticed until someone mentioned it, but there certainly seems to be a 'type' with this blonde upstart character. I can see how Zell might be a prototypical Zidane, but the latter has a definite 'star' quality to carry a game as the protagonist... I guess it's the whole 'Virtue' thing that underpins his character arc.... whereas I think Zell just wants a simple life and some hot dogs.
@@AlleywayJack I was thinking the outgoing nature of Zell and given how both games were being developed at the same time, I can see where they pulled content from each other.
@@BarryIrwinBrophy Very true. It still amazes me how production overlapped and they managed to publish 7, 8 and 9 within such a short space of time from one another.

Zell’s character trope is the main character in allot of popular anime. I would go as far and say Naruto and Asta from Black Clover are similar characters

Seifer can't be with Rinoa... Zell can't be with Squall... Seifer/Zell is the true endgame. lol
But for real, I'm surprised you didn't talk about his relationship with Seifer more. They're both trying too hard to be something that they're not, and that's what really puts them at odds with each other - they can both see how fake the other is. It's difficult for them to grasp that or admit it out loud. If they ever admitted that they actually understand each other, they wouldn't have a reason to fight anymore, and I think they don't want that because there's something familiar and comfortable about the constant fighting. Its their status quo. It's why Zell doesn't *really* hate Seifer, despite appearances. The feeling's mutual.
There was a great scene in Opera Omnia where Seifer was fooled by the Emperor who used Zell's voice to make it sound like Zell had insulted his "romantic dream." When Seifer found out that it wasn't Zell, he was really embarrassed... Because he accidentally showed how much he cares about what Zell thinks of him. Zell assured him that he wouldn't say something like that, but Seifer was embarrassed, so it was easier for him to respond with more anger -- which he directed at the Emperor instead of Zell. /chef kiss/
You know how there's that one NPC girl who says that she looks forward to finding a man she can marry and fight with every day like her parents? That's totally them. Even if they work things out, I think the fighting will always be part of their relationship. Its their cozy place. Tsundere/Tsundere.

I don't know wether I am way off or not but I have always gotten the impression Zell was written to be homosexual or at least initially. Seifer always referred to Zell as a "chicken-wuss" which suggests he has a a more less abrasive side to his personality and as the story goes on we see this more for example during the flashback scenes during the orphanage. There is also the way Selphie tries to wind Zell up for the neatness of his bedroom and how uncomfortable he'll be with a girl on his bed, hinting as if she knows something. As for the library girl, Zell seems completely unaware of her and when they do interact I recall it being uncomfortable; this does not change, as he still shows little interest in her by the end of the game. Although I don't think it's creepy, I also found Zell to be way more interested in seeking a friendship ("bromance") with Squall whose acknowledgement seems quite important to him. The quick to anger and loud nature seems like a mixture of trying hard to be tough and pent-up frustration, almost over-compensating for something. This is how I've always seen Zell as a character even from quite young and find it difficult to see him any other way. However it was 1999 and even if this was the case they probably didn't want to go all the way with a storyline like that due to being uncertain how it would be received. It has the bare bones of a story about a character much in denial about themselves. It was like Irvine loved women generally, Squall loved one woman and Zell didn't want any.
Good observations, and yeah he definitely craves some degree of approval from Squall throughout the game, but if that's the case I don't get why he wanted to gift Squall's ring to Rinoa, because it seems like a romantic gesture.
@@AlleywayJack Yeah I was going to mention that. I have no idea why he wanted to do that and tried to look into it. That "gesture" came so out of the blue though and I thought if there was ever anyone least interested in his advances it would probably be Rinoa, seeing that she was clearly primarily interested in Squall. I got the impression she liked the ring and wanted a copy which Zell offered to do for her.
I absolutely agree with your points! I think your conclusion about denial sums it up; it's also possible he might even be anaware of what's going on and how he's supposed to behave, unsure of what's been dragging him behind and making him act like this. As a kid, I could really empathize with Zell and I wasn't sure why myself :) He seemed the polar opposite of the silent, mysterious -and edgy- heroes I typically liked (like Squall or Vincent)

zell's facial tats inspired mike tyson's. sorceress edea's costume is often copied elsewhere. notably in wwe, they tried really hard to cosplay edea on charlotte flair.

I myself didn't like Zell and I felt Squall's initial summation of him being "just loud" is 100% correct.
