- Exciting times for the Royal Albatross Colony team as this seasons juvenile Albatross start returning after 4-10 years away at sea. Lyndon and Colin, Department of Conservation Rangers band Red Lime Red, a male, who has returned back for the first time since fledging (around 6 years). RLR is about 7 years old and has come back to Taiaroa Head to start to find a mate and breed at the only mainland Royal Albatross Breeding Colony in the world here in Dunedin New Zealand.
They also banded another first time returning bird. A female, possibly around the same age, colour band - Red, Lime, Yellow (RLY)
Ever had a seagull snatch your food? This snatches the whole table.
lmaoo😂😭😭
YESSSS
giant seagull duck!
This is what happens when you feed the seagulls at the beach
It evolves into this
It's not a seagull. It's a albatross :)

This shows their incredible size very well. Wow, they are HUGE!
Their size is absolutely incredible! I can only imagine the pectoral muscles! The condition of the feathers looks excellent, not tattered as I would expect.
They actually don't flap their wings much once in the air, they can fly indefinitely without flapping with a yo-yo technique close to the sea. There's a video that explains it.
Your profile picture looks like a birds tail feathers
They are the largest flying bird. Largest bird being the ostrich
Albatross: *"Mark my words, I will remember this day!"*
Jesus they're huge
I know right
Its the largest flying bird in the world
Their wingspan combined with their body is taller than a grown man raising his arm
On my calculations
Chonky cuddly seachickens 😂😍
It’s amazing they just let people walk up to them! They are a bit too trusting but beautiful, gentle creatures!
‘Gentle’ would not be a word i use to describe nature. Especially an animal that often indulges in cannibalism.
I might call a robin or finch ‘gentle’.
Even then, there is nothing more brutal and unforgiving than nature.
Respect to the dude holding the bird, video starts by him taking a slap to the groin 😂
for science!
Albatross: "Dab you, led go ob by dose!"
That bird is enormous...!
Looks like a supersized seagull. So cute
However, it isn't, also, there's no such thing as a seagull, they're actually just called gulls, additionally, albatrosses are in the family Diomedeidae while gulls belong to the family Laridae, in fact gulls and albatrosses are not related, gulls are shorebirds while albatrosses are tubenoses.
@@indyreno2933 uh ok
@@indyreno2933 I love seagulls.
@@indyreno2933 🤓
@@indyreno2933yeah, seagulls are cool, right?
What a beautiful, beautiful bird.
Ive never seen an albatross in person but seeing these men holding one really puts into perspective how massive they are. Giant overgrown seagulls. They really are handsome birds tho.
When I die.....I will hope and pray with all my might to be an Albatross in another Life.
You really don't get a true idea of their size until you see them compared to a person, wow they are huge
Beautiful beautiful sea bird! I live watching their Livestream. These birds are amazing! And endangered.
Beautiful bird, but I wouldn't want to get hit by those wings or catch a blow from that beak!
"The albatross begins with its vengeance
A terrible curse a thirst has begun
His shipmates blame bad luck on the mariner
About his neck, the dead bird is hung
And the curse goes on and on at sea
And the curse goes on and on for them and me"
Rime of the ancient mariner
Oof
Omg I didn't expect an albatross to be this big!
Great to see Lyndon and Colin bestowing Red Lime Red his new "moniker," "RLR" and to know that he's back from sea to get his social life started for a hopefully long and successful future! Thank you so much for posting this so that we may see how Colin holds these magnificent, huge seabirds during the process. Colin must keep in great shape to be able to hold them properly and firmly, yet so gently! Wonderful video!
I love this beautiful white bird,he is very quite❤
Albatross is such a magnificent creature!
How they open and close their wings is majestic to me
Beautiful bird!
Very nice bird and big bird

We’re aliens to the birds how aliens are to us lol

Damn that is a big ass bird

what a sick bird
The majestic flying derp.
I can't believe that thing can even fly. Must take a half hour to get airborne.
They only live where are strong winds all the time. They only spread the wings and it lifts them like a helicopter. And strong cold winds protect their nests too.
Why does this bird looks cute
Waw, never knew they were so big.
I love their feet :-) :-) :-)
Me too:3

Big ol flappers!
So webby and face-huggy ☺️☺️☺️
What a big boi!
Could you please describe the banding process @Royal Albatross Colony
I want one as a life-sized stuffed animal now.
Trust me *YOU DON'T*
I wish I could hug this big cutieee 😘❤️❤️❤️❤️ for life & hope they r helping this big innocent cutie 🤗
I find these wonders so magical I would love to fly with them or their ancestors the argentavis
@@rhodezzziscool5197 I don't think Arjentavis was closely related to the wandering Albatross.
indrajeet Thats a southern royal albatross…
how is beautifull 😍😍
i like how they are holding a FVCKING DINOSAUR casually
So in the time it takes them to return, is this due to the navigation of some current(s)?
A part of their migratory route?
Beautiful birds!
what happened to the live cam? is Rossi ok?
Soo... that's what it looks like to be an albatross. Good choice Sanem and Can like.... wOw

this bird could probably eat a regular seagull
I would have enjoyed to see how they let go of it.
I just know how big they are😳. I thought they are like duck size..
Those are bigger than i thought
Can’t it breathe when you put your hand over it’s beak?
الطائر المبكر 😍✋
Scientists believe they have finally worked out how the mighty albatross - a seabird capable of travelling 10,000 miles in a single journey and circumnavigating the globe in 46 days - manages to fly without expending almost any energy.Nov 17, 2013 - from google.
WOOOOW....
That’s a big bird
I need to know two things...
1. How in the world did they catch that thing?
2. How are they keeping it so calm?
Albatrosses do not have direct predators that chase and eat them so they are not scared of humans (sometimes they even come over and investigate you as they are curious). Once you get too close they do start trying to bite but they do not "attack" you as some other birds like Geese. Usually rangers let the albatross bite onto their arm and then grab their bill to keep it shut. From there they pick up the bird and can hold it. They do like to fight as they don't like being held/captured but they are not that naturally aggressive. Albatrosses are rather laid back birds so they tend to just kind of deal with being held and try and squirm away. You can also search for "Rangers Perform Weight Check on Royal Cam Chick" to see how its done.
@@birdcamhighlights5414 damn... thanks dude

What is this procedure they perform after attaching the band to the leg - why the med gloves and syringe? Looks like the bird is being hurt.:(

I filmed a giant bird. The video is called "Giant Bird! Pelagornis?"

Try a seagull first and see if u like it
That sounded like a Nikon DSLR camera
do they breed this? or trying to domesticate them? or perhaps farming them?
Kia Ora, this is the banding process to identify individual albatross within this breeding colony. The colony and all birds on the headland here are all completely wild animals, there are no breeding programmes or farming programmes here, only conservation management e.g. predator control, monitoring of population etc. to ensure the population thrives.
@@royalalbatross1466 thank you for the reply, i find these birds interesting, they seems to be robust and in good number, i was thinking perhaps they are being bred or domesticated for commercial purposes in other part of the world.
What was he doing with the syringe? Do they have to have some kind of shots?
Kia Ora, the syringe contains glue to secure the band. Rangers must take care to make sure bands are fitted correctly.
Genial
I wonder if that’s a full size ?
Yes that's an adult
It's just like a huge seagull
But they're not related.

Надевайте такие очки, чтобы часто не снимать. Птица крупная, надо постоянно предохранять глаза!!
Why does he take so much time? Why didn't he prepare in advance so that stress to the bird could be minimized?
Kia ora Ji, all prep is done prior to banding, there is nothing else the DoC rangers can do to further prep. Banding process doesn't take that long. Kind regards, Chris
Damn this bird ate alot Mc Donals
That baby doesn’t know if he’s gonna live or die in that situation, poor birdie 😔
Why did they capture storm? (Only Sonic fans will get this)
Cuz storm is an albatross XD
Mega duck
Demasiado aparatoso el profesional que hace los cambios de aparatos al ave, se le ve complicado en todo momento y no preparado a la mano todo lo que necesita, debería tener un protocolo para que todo sea lo mas suave y rápido y no estrésar al ave.
They are more than capable and are highly trained so don’t worry. You, however, get the award for the most annoying comment on this thread.
how about the fact that this bird has an actual foot
Why did you hold it's beck because it's gonna scream
Probably so it doesn't whip it around and peck the guy holding him. Did you see the size of that thing? I got pecked in the shoulder by an Ostrich once and it felt like I'd been hit with a 12 lbs sledge hammer. This thing has huge and relatively sharper beak. Being that close to one's face, neck, and shoulders I'd opt to hold his head and TIGHTLY too.
الطائر المبكر 😂✋
I was getting anxious here... Release the bird. What was taking so long... 🤔🤔
Kia Ora, the process is not that long and once done they release the Albatross back into the colony.
