  • Exciting times for the Royal Albatross Colony team as this seasons juvenile Albatross start returning after 4-10 years away at sea. Lyndon and Colin, Department of Conservation Rangers band Red Lime Red, a male, who has returned back for the first time since fledging (around 6 years). RLR is about 7 years old and has come back to Taiaroa Head to start to find a mate and breed at the only mainland Royal Albatross Breeding Colony in the world here in Dunedin New Zealand.
They also banded another first time returning bird. A female, possibly around the same age, colour band - Red, Lime, Yellow (RLY)

They actually don't flap their wings much once in the air, they can fly indefinitely without flapping with a yo-yo technique close to the sea. There's a video that explains it.

    • @birdcamhighlights5414

Albatrosses do not have direct predators that chase and eat them so they are not scared of humans (sometimes they even come over and investigate you as they are curious). Once you get too close they do start trying to bite but they do not "attack" you as some other birds like Geese. Usually rangers let the albatross bite onto their arm and then grab their bill to keep it shut. From there they pick up the bird and can hold it. They do like to fight as they don't like being held/captured but they are not that naturally aggressive. Albatrosses are rather laid back birds so they tend to just kind of deal with being held and try and squirm away. You can also search for "Rangers Perform Weight Check on Royal Cam Chick" to see how its done.

Kia Ora, this is the banding process to identify individual albatross within this breeding colony. The colony and all birds on the headland here are all completely wild animals, there are no breeding programmes or farming programmes here, only conservation management e.g. predator control, monitoring of population etc. to ensure the population thrives.

Being that close to one's face, neck, and shoulders I'd opt to hold his head and TIGHTLY too.
