This was a beautiful thing to watch for me, for the first time! At the end, I understood that the lady ranger was helping mama albatross with her egg, making sure the embryo was developing properly, so the mama bird wouldn't have to sit there for nothing. Bravo lady ranger, you were very gentle! Bravo New Zealand Dept. of Conservation for your great efforts!
I can only wonder what the bird is thinking while watching this rather strange ritual take place. But I have to admit - it's a pretty charming interaction, all seemingly based on gentleness and trust.
Albatrosses are famously amazing migrators. I imagine this one somewhere across the globe chatting up a fellow mom: "So, who measures your eggs?" "Who what?" "Your eggs. The lady, with the cape...? No?"
She's so trusting. It's adorable. And so talkative. It's funny how what we might perceive as the same action or sound can actually mean different things. I'm pretty sure it was an entire conversation between them even if the lady is silent.
I heard Albatross are not afraid of humans because they never developed fear of humans since there had not been any humans on the islands where they nest until very recently.
I don’t care what anyone says, animals know when humans mean them harm and when they don’t intend to harm them. This beautiful bird allowed this lady to do her job and somehow knew she meant no harm.
I realy dont think that animals "know" that.... Sure a bear is a noble creature, but u dont see a Video of a freaking Cup being taken away from their mother with only a hearty attitude and no Syringe Gun.
You obviously don’t have much experience with animals then. There’s been plenty of times I just wanted to help an animal and they were terrified of me. Often times wild animals need to be tranquilized to be rescued. If they knew the rescuers were there to help why wouldn’t they just cooperate?
Because albatross nest on desolate oceanic islands with no predators they have no fear of human beings. On some of their natal islands overrun with introduced rodents they often sit calmly incubating their eggs while they are being eaten alive.
I like the way the bird 'talked' to her - greeted her when she arrived, and said goodbye when she was leaving! And such faith and trust in a brooding bird?!
@@lockandloadlikehell I think beak-clacking may be the start of the greeting ritual. When the albatross land and approach each other, beak clacking seems to come first, then a sort of head bowing, craning the head back, and then long, mournful-sounding calls. This seems to be a greeting. (Would love it if an expert could explain.) The giant shoebill bird bows to humans, then gets insulted if humans don't bow back. Should a human do that, the shoebill bows again, and adores the human. Bird rituals and weird and wonderful. :)
