Today the chick at the Royalcam nest is 26 days old and weighs 1.82kg. Rewind back to around 10.40am NZT to see the action. As the chicks grow a basket is used to weigh them in. OGK and YRK have been coming back for change overs quite frequently which has lead to healthy weight gains for their chick. The heaviest chick today is 2.72kg.

Imagine a big bird just flies into your bedroom, slowly takes your baby from a crib and weighs it, then returns as if nothing happens. LOL
I'm carcking up laughing.
slowly takes it with his wings 🤔😂
Lmao! I’m crying!! Thanks for the visual!! That should be a movie….lol

MaMa was acting like she called the Doctor for a visit.
😁
that's it
Like saying: "What took you so long?!! I've a mind to bite you but for being in the presence of junior, I'll keep my peace".
The mom pokes the little one's head like it was saying "Behave!"
Mom to Doctor: What took you so long?
"Here, ma'am, I shall return your cloud to you."
Looks like a fluffy football. It’s pretty cute.
🤣🤣🤣
The mom: Don’t worry kid, these animals are veeeery slow...

That trick probably doesn't work as well on grizzly mamas

Well, no. Because, what happens with alien abductions is, they never come back. Her baby came back.

I didn't realize how big an albatross actually is until the guy knelt. Both heads are practically on par.

@@caveatlector2671 : Same.
I see a lot of people talking about it so:
These birds have been habituated to the scientists, and are used to them. I've noticed that in their albatross videos they have a specific, easily recognized uniform, and the albatross in that area are used to them being present from a young age. I saw some other people point out that they aren't used to land predators, which is correct. These nests are in New Zealand, where there are no land based predators, and as such don't fully recognize the potential danger in having a large creature coming close to them and interacting with them.
I have also seen a lot of people asking/complaining about whether or not they feed the albatross. They don't, because they don't want the albatross to associate them with food. They don't want to encourage these birds to seek out people for a snack, which can but the birds in danger in a myriad of ways, or to beg from the researchers when they're trying to do tests. Would feeding them make the birds more 'friendly?' Yes, but at both the birds and researchers detriment. So they don't.
The point of these interactions is to keep an eye on the health of the albatross population, not for them to become dependent on people.
That said, the trust they've established with the birds is important. The scientists near ritualistic slow movement and deliberate touches are 'signal behaviors' which further indicate to the birds that the scientists aren't predators. Some of the researchers do a beak touch before trying to access the eggs, or 'garden' the area around the albatross's nest, as shown in some of the other videos.
As for albatross intelligence, they can absolutely recognize the uniform, and I would guess at least some of them do recognize the specific researchers they interact with. Just because they aren't parrots doesn't mean they're totally clueless.
It's really cool to see this type of research is available to watch. Thanks for uploading these.
why u comment when u have no clue? new zealand is ridden with land predators now as humans introduced many, these are on remote small island where its still safe, albatross dont need to recognise people in any island with any albatross species u will find them very docile as they spend all their life flying around southern oceans and dont deal with humans and have no fear of them, the weighting of the chick is useless data that so far had absolutely no useful outcome, if there was food shortage and loss of weight in chicks u could see it clearly by simply comparing foto, knowong exact grams is meaningless, really dumb disturbance of birds
@@MostIntelligentMan your name should be 'pessimist position" and not neutral position. Just saying.
No land-based predators... but there are cases of a single cat of the island's lamp house caretaker wiping out an entire bird species endemic to that island. Same goes for pigs of new settlers.

Quite impressive, actually. Never would have expected one could get away with that without momma bringin the pain :)
@Rodol Rubinstein would you like to discuss to the class what your mother did to you in the past?
Yeah so the first time they showed up in full plate armor and just let her do her worst, now she thinks they’re invincible and doesn’t bother.
Read on a different vid that the mother was hand reared and released into the wild, so they understand these people handling their chicks this way isn’t threatening or endangering
I love how, in all the clips of this momma and baby, the rangers move slowly so as to not spook the birds.

You can tell the mother trusts the humans but at the same time her eyes never leave them or her child. I can imagine her clacking beak when they picked it up was basically "Be gentle or else!"
Wow baby is 5 lbs. what a cutie🥰. Mom and dad did a great job👍🏻
1:20 momma bird was saying: carefully carefully carefully 😍
I keep watching these videos the way mother bird keeps watching them. Lol
I know, they are big. But I hadn't had known how big they are in comparison to humans. - This size is impressive.
This is almost too much cuteness to handle! 💕 What a fluffy baby.❤️
Mom was like "You weigh her good you hear me?"
Damn, that was smooth. I imagine that bill could do so real damage.
I have to believe that there is some recognition from the parent here. He does clearly have a confident, calm approach that the bird does not find at all threatening.
The chick looks so bemused by the experience! =D
What a privilege to see. An extraordinary bird. I envy these guys and their work. Just amazing!
Hfdh
the way the scientists handle the operation is great as well. much respect.
Amazing mom does not flies away, even let baby be touched , she might be used to with this pair ,should have given some appreciation to mom with some treat 🤔🤭
To keep the natural order thriving, you never interact with wildlife by feeding them in an unnescerary way which would change the wildlife (the Albatross) behaviour in wanting to depend on human interaction which can make a huge impact in a negative way on their diet. (Even if it's a small treat, the bird would rely on humans to give them food over caught food)
You see that huge lake behind the bird…yeah….THAT’S MORE THAN A TREAT.
@@Chlrintruc my statement is based on psychological change of the animal’s behaviour on how it would perceive human interaction and would be dependent on those friendly interactions rather than being an independent animal. Of course one treat wont change the Albatross’ behaviour, but if a repetitive friendly interaction occurs then that is an issue.
@@racc_cs the "oooo" guy was probably responding to the OC
@@racc_cs
It might only be an issue if they feed the albatros so much that it doesn't need to go hunting anymore.
But a regular "doctors" visit with a little snack probably doesn't change anything in their behavior except getting comfortable around humans...
And even if you feed the albatros every day for a week so that it doesn't need to hunt during that time I doubt that it would forget how to hunt and simply starve once you stop feeding it :P
I CAN'T BELIEVE they got away with that! 😂😂😂
The gentleman's touch
Every time I see one of these birds next to an adult human I'm still so shocked at the size of them 😲❤️

Such innocence on the part of the birds...lovely to see humans helping and gently interacting with them.

Just discovered these Albatross videos recently. They are fascinating to watch and the birds are so beautiful. I am awed at their tolerance towards humans (at least as far as these videos display).
Малыш подрос. Стал крупный. Как мило ведет мама птенца: она доверяет орнитологам, хотя и попугала их своим щелканьем клюва.😊

What a cute mama! So sweet towards her baby when they take him/her. Almost like she’s reassuring her kid that it’s ok. Adorable 💕
At the end i think mama bird was worried they substituted her chick for another one. Many birds actually do worry about this due to the cucu. She is trying to figure out what took place.and is dumbfounded. It's interesting that she accepted the human and her beak claps was truly a communication meant to express her disaproval, it was not a physical attack. That is remarkable.
Oh, how beautiful. How absolutely gorgeous. I never realized how large of birds they were.

This is not a pet. You don’t give anything to wild animals as you’ll compromise their survival. They will be dependent to “humans”.
@@mojaco3910 funny how many pets we have and continue to create. Humanity IS a part of nature both saving and destroying. Your looking at it the wrong way. 1 fish for letting them hold its child? “That’s” what’s destroying ecosystems? Hell humanity has personality traits called “natures.”
@@AutomanicJack yes
@@justinosborne256 Nah, the issue is that they'd become too comfortable with humans and seek them out, expecting food, which obviously can be very dangerous (re: unfriendly people, cars, farmers/fishermen shooting them, becoming dependant on humans for food). We've done all our pet creation about 20-40,000 years ago (dogs). Obviously more recently for the 'domestic' cat (7500 BC), I say domestic loosely as they're still part-wild, hence why they shouldn't be left to roam about our bush and eat native birds, which would be another issue if these lovely birds came closer to humans: our pets!
