  • Rangers from the New Zealand Department of Conservation stop by the Royal Cam nest to check in on the week-old nestling. At this stage of the nestling period, the chick at the Top Flat nest is receiving daily weight checks to ensure the young bird is growing as expected.
    RoyalCam was set up in January 2016 by the Department of Conservation and the Cornell Lab has been collaborating with DOC since 2019 to bring the cam to life. To learn more while watching, view the cam at

    Royal Cam is a 24-hour live stream of a Northern Royal Albatross nest during the breeding season at Pukekura/Taiaroa Head on the southeast tip of New Zealand's South Island.
    This season (2023-24) features two nests in view. At the main site to the left of the frame, male LGK (named for his colored leg band combination: Lime/Green/Black) and female LGL (Lime/Green/Lime) return to the Top Flat nest site, where they are caring for a single egg laid on November 7.
    Nearby to the right, male WYL (White/Yellow/Lime) and female BOK (Blue/Orange/Black) have been tending to their egg since it was laid on November 14 at the Top Track Flat site. This site is currently obscured by tall grass, which will die down and open up the view as the season progresses.

      @EmiW7140 it's not trust...that dies not compute in the animal kingdom....there are no predators of the Royal Albatross that evolved on the islands of New Zealand, so they just are not afraid.

      Lots of birds nest on the ground even if they have predators to worry about and could theoretically nest in trees. Albatrosses are pretty big and typically nest in places with trees far too small to fit them.

    island dwelling birds are just as tolerant of literally being eaten alive by invasive species though. But at least the albatross seems to understand humans are a sentient race since it bothers to greet and say goodbye.

  • @wabifactory
    @wabifactory 13 дней назад +5

    “Tolerant”? I think this is a bit anthropomorphizing. I mean this isn’t social services scene. Looks like beautiful support of a graceful mother bird who understands Gods plan that we are supposed to act as the guardians of nature protecting it. Intrusion? this talk sullies what a gorgeous thing I just witnessed.

    • @smukase
      @smukase 9 дней назад +1

      Now who's anthropomorphizing? Animals obviously aren't as stupid as we think them to be and can recognize people or behavior. This is obviously learnt. But humans will always remain the single greatest threat to every species on this planet including ourselves.

    • @eliaspeter7689
      @eliaspeter7689 7 дней назад +11

      Because suggesting the bird has an understanding of the concept of God is not anthropomorphizng?
