Here in the northern woods of the lower peninsula of MI, I hunt with a Thompson Center Contender 10" bbl in .30-30. I use Winchester Deer Season XP 150 grn. They work extremely well, even out of the 10" bbl. They expand perfectly and if they don't go all the way thru, they are found under the skin on the opposite side of entry, destroying everything in between. Enjoyed the video!!
Accuracy and "dropping power "were certainly underestimated .I witnessed a friend headshoot at a paced off 100 yards a coyote with an iron sighted Trapper (16" 1894).At night 🌙 😳. I held the 1million candle power spotlight and watched the copper color of the flat bullet base as it made a gentle arc toward the 'yote's noggin.
You're not old. You're not fat. But you might be a dad. And I like your videos. Haha Big fan of the .30-30. It's not a magnum. It's not a 400 yard hammer. It's a 200+ yard hammer and what it does, it does better than just about any other .30.
Like you said, it's all in the bullet construction. There are copper bullets made for the 30-30 that can be used in other calibers. Barnes and Nosler make them. They expand well at low velocities and give the benefit of a Lead-free hunting round.
I agree with your estimation of the difference in the rounds. If you used the same round in all 3 caliber i believe the results would have been different. I’ve never shot 300 blackout, but that 308 would have given you more damage on the back side of a deer whereas the 30 30 expended its energy upon contact. That’s why your melon exploded the most from the 30 30 also !!!
@@TheOldFatDadGoober I enjoy watching channels that don’t have 10,000,000 subscribers. But u will someday, you have good content like comparing different calibers. That’s the kind of stuff I look for. Thanks for what u do !!!
TOFD G. Good video. Nice shooting. I have never been a hunter, but it looks like there is a fair amount of effort involved to taking down a deer, get it out of the woods and then get it processed. Well done. Thanks for sharing. Take care.
Thanks for watching! It is a little bit of work, but once you get the hang of it it's not too bad. Best thing to do is start small with rabbits or squirrels and see if you like it before tackling the big stuff. Or just eat other people's venison, there's usually plenty to go around.
@@TheOldFatDadGoober Thanks. You did good and did it well. I'll probably stick with hamburgers. Rather than being out in the cold. When I was kid, I helped butcher pigs and that was enough for me. Thanks again.
Just seemed to me that you shot low with the .308, and that skewed the results. But I'm sure the bullet construction did have something to do with the results as well. The flat tip on the .30-30 gave it a greater initial impact.
My friend brought a 300blk to Texas for a hog hunt. When our guide saw it, he asked him not to use it and use his other rifle. The guide said the 300blk accounts for more wounded game than any other caliber. My 30-30 took four hogs with the 150gr bullet from 40 to 270 yards. Winchester got it right in 1894.
I suspect this project comes down to "any excuse to make a noisy, smelly mess". Some things never change, but that's just the Older Fatter Grandpa rambling.
If you want to use a 30 caliber rifle use one that has been proven effective for decades. Turning a cartridge that was made for a 22 caliber projectile into something it’s not. There is plenty of load data out there to adjust a 308 to whatever your needs are to hunt.
35 to 50 yards is about qll you can see in the woods around here. I got my 50 beowulf for this, I load it down in velocity. High velocity bloodshot the meat to much
@@TheOldFatDadGoober First of all, ballistic tip is proprietary to nosler. A lot of people see a bullet with a plastic tip and call it a ballistic tip, when that is not the case. Off the top of my head, all the following have plastic tips: hornady Sst, hornady eld-x, nosler ballistic tip, nosler accubond, barnes ttsx, and sierra tipped game king. All have plastic tips yet all are very different bullets and will perform very differently. Yes, the actual nosler ballistic tip will expand violently at high velocity, but should be fine in a .308...even more so in 168gr vs.150 gr. If you get nosler ballistic tips, and they are accurate, they will be fine.
You shot low with 308 as well both times. slow mo on the melon hit low left, and the mustard and explosion shows low hit second time as well. That said i'm glad as a hunter I never used the plastic tips.
The second shot from The 300 blk hit the trim in front of the table and the table before hitting the target. I liked the video but he shot low several times.
That’s like apples and oranges Comparing 308 30/30 To 300 blk I think you should redo this 308 30/06 30/30 300 WM Also better shot placement would help I would assume if you aim at the top of the Birkenstock you should hit low middle Depending on what your rifles are zeroed at Keep up the great vids brother Safe shooting
Thanks for watching! The 300 Blackout is in the same ballpark as the 7.62x39 and 5.56. For longer shots, probably not a great choice, but effective 100 yards and in.

I remember when TC was introduced. Thought they looked cool. Shot .44 magnum out of a 14 inch barrel. Extreme accuracy and mild perceived recoil.
30-30 and 22 lr are the two most underestimated rounds

The .30-30 is pretty impressive! It would be fun to see it compared to 7.62x39
