Joe Elmore was always awesome watching on tv. Seems like hes a real trip to hang out with
Your going to loose half of your subs if you keep turning Ford episodes into LS episodes. You went right to the LS before it was even at the half way point of the video.
Fix the dam title.
Why the hell are you building a boring LS in the middle of a Ford episode. ??? come on guys
Yes it should be called "sucking GM dick" Assholes ...
Back in 1979 I worked at Ford on one of the 385 lines building 460 engines. It does my heart wonders to see one of these old engines brought back to life. Thanks for a great show.
I'm probably driving one of your 460s. Still runs great. Thank you.
Your welcome.
A 460 is what I run in my 77 F150 4x4. Can't beat it.
I also run a 460 in a 91 F350...
Yea a 429 scj gives me a stiffie
So glad you guys are going the RUclips route. I've been watching since I was a little kid back in the TNN days
they're still on TV too. I watch on The History Channel
@@skwerlee yea but 6am is too dang early on a Sunday for me
This episode is from then.
Remember the honda civic project?
@@4rcowboy oh yea. That teal one?
omg i just went threw a time machine i remember waking up early for school waiting for mom to make breakfast and watching this before the bus arrives and dreaming of getting me a fresh 426 super bee or a hemi cuda man good ol days sad this generation doesnt really have anything like this on tv
Bought a 210hp clunker. Polished junker, new carb, new pistons, made around 370hp. Upgraded air flow and fuel delivery, and made 600hp. Not bad, not bad at all.
I was all hypin' on the 460, and then you showed an LS engine. My testosterone level dropped and my nads shrank to 4-year-old size. Gee, thanks a bunch. Next time make anything Shivvy a separate episode so I don't have to throw darts at my monitor.
Right wtf is that. It should be called how to turn a Ford episode into a chebby episode.
I'm so sick of Chevys including that last I could just puke.
@@troymi1648
Did you notice the change in attitude & enthusiasm I'm so done with shows that don't give the blue oval it's due respect!
Pucker you guys
Im glad motorheads get to stay at home and are able to fettishize about valve shape/compression.
460 making 600 hp na. That's nice💪💪
With a mostly stock bottom end. Basically a head, cam and intake swap
marshall mcdowell the heads and the cam are pretty much the worst part about any stock 460
Add another 2k and you can have a 514 stroker for like 100tq more
john dowe I’ve got a 514 going in my 1967 Country Sedan wagon
@@thedraftdoctor1 nice man, i want to build my 460 to a 514 in my 78 bronco
Pretty stout 460 for sure. Great engine, I still have one on my farm in an old truck. They just live forever!
ALL of this is WWAAAYY over my head , but , please continue . I will smile and look contemplative .
Oh geez 😱 the quickest way to cross thread a bolt especially in alloy is starting them with power tools oh god
Only a problem if you expect to remove them later. /s
david eliassen , I saw that and NO LUBE on the cam swap either 🚽
It pained me seeing that. Using power tools to drive anything but large diameter, coarse threads is a no-no, IMO.
And the way they slam and stuff things around, geez.
If you know what your doing its no big deal...
it made me feel a little sick
How you guys manage to not say a single "uhh" when explaining stuff is absolute magic.
Editing...the magic of editing.
Really enjoyed the Ford 460 build series.
Yes 429-460 is a great motor ran many of them will run right with a BBC with equal parts thanks for doing a great motor show about them will watch for more
So after about ten minutes in, you're done watching. Very nice 460 Ford.
Finally a BBF gets some attention. Why did they have to ruin the video with yet another LS build.
So sick of LS builds. Yep you can BOLT anything to them. And drop them in anything. V8 rice rocket if you ask me
@@n1uk214I would agree that they make kits to install them in just about anything and for the average beginner a LS would be the easy choice. But for the experienced guys it's just plain boring. They don't make adapters for where we're going!
@Richard Skipper i use a 429 with RV cam and iginition. For my pull truck. I like the extra weight
@Richard Skipper Brother you aren't kidding. I put one in my Miata and it didn't like it one bit. They make an AM aluminum block for those who can afford it.
@Richard Skipper hey im Working class too buddy. Thats the best part of these old big blocks. Heads like the D0Ve and D1Ve are high proformance. A2A heads were interceptor heads . Decking the block and a cam goes a long way with big blocks. Even a stroker kit only runs around 2000 dollars
My Bud was a BBF man. Built many 429-460's. As HRM mag said, the 460 was the quickest and cheapest way to 600 hp. You guys proved it. By the way my Bud ran his 460's at the Grove. He usually ran them several seasons before a tear down. In his words they were durable, dependable, and amazingly consistent. By the way the show was great, except for the Chevy part, lol.
Those old truck motors always had a lot more potential.
I owned a 1969 Lincoln Mark III . It had a chromed badge plate under the hood that rated the 10.5 to 1 , 460 c.i. at 365 b.h.p. @ 4600 r.p.m. A great car with the engine to prove it.
Fun to watch the ole' iron 460 make some numbers...on your valve checking, fixed a fair amount of Chevy/Ford BB "porcupine" heads after checking valve wipe left & right by having to cut the pushrod guide plates apart then rotate and tighten back where the belong, followed by me TIG welding them back together....Enjoy the videos, keep them coming and I'll keep watching!
Love the big block Ford it's the engine that the first Bigfoot trucks dominated with as well as Bob Glidden in pro stock
Do some porting and polishing to the Trick flow heads and Trick flow intake manifold and man that 460 Big Block Ford will definitely make over 625 HP.
@@rickjames6948 Oh Yeah you betcha mate or it can even make 630 HP or more.
Makes me wanna clean my 460 lol, I’m changing my carb guts tomorrow.
I'd love that 460 in my 82 bronco. Awesome content guys, as always.
Wish they still show this on TV!,used to watch every weekend!
I've built a few 460's Really loved them
You left out so many useful procedures. I wouldn't mind more on the drilling the hole in the crank, and how you set up those rockers. Thx for all the great stuff on your show!
Great video series on the 460's.....have built several and love them......once you get rid of Ford heads. I'm learning a lot from you guys even at 72 years of age. I can tell the info is good......your hands look like mine! Believe it. Wish I had your equipment. Keep the faith. PS.....Great work on the LS motor.....I've been resisting them as an old timer.....but, in my heart, I know that's where it's at now.
460s are solid motors the bottom ends are hard to kill. Head and intake swap and depending on budget if you can do the intervals low psi turbo charger, or both Torque wins everytime. And considering if more NA power was needed the 460 turns into a 550 in a overhaul for about the same cost. If I had to go for a newer age motor. Instead of the ls1 I think I'd go for fords 5.7l DOHC fully built these motors can make some serious power NA.
This is my favorite build of this show. I’d love to have this engine in a prepped 62-63 galaxie for open course driving, Holman Moody style! Would be a lot cheaper than a FE I imagine.
4:40 the upgrade they did on the distributor would have worked just fine.
I think horsepower is amazing and we all need it in their engines
I'd really like to see an old school solid lifter flat tappet camshaft in the big block. I feel the 607hp at 6000rpm is being limited by the hydraulic roller since hydraulic camshafts are done by about 6000rpm.
This thing sounds so smooth I really think another 5-700 rpm might yield another 40hp making it ~ 650hp. Very nice!
ThePaulv12
They couldn’t do that because it would have beaten the 454.
@@roninkraut6873 lol
Na, it'll run forever like it is, and hooking all that torque up on street tires is gonna be really hard anyway. A big solid flat tappet can would soften it below 3000 rpm or so, but breaking the cam in, having to put zink additives in every oil change would get old!! Love to have that motor in my 94 f150 flareside! Ladder bars and track locator a must tho.
That 385 series Ford is a beast waiting to be unleashed.
Throw that 460 in a Foxbody or a Maverick🏁🙌🏽
Samuel Monsivais or on a late 80s f150 hahahah
Samuel Monsivais , yeeha, I had a 1970 Ford mavrick
very lightweight.
Tim Schutte I love the old Mavericks there an underrated car that a lot of people look over
Samuel Monsivais , mine only had the 250 six single barrel carburator but it was my very first car I ever owned. friend of mine had the Grabber 302 V/8.
pretty fast car. did good burnouts, lol.
No that’s what the LS is for🤣🤣🤣
Next, we're placing leaf springs on a C7 Corvette
Corvettes come from the factory with leaf springs🤔🤔
@@TheBigred1781 from the 50s to the 80s they did
C7 still have a mono leaf spring
@@jacobmullins3644 yeah, corvettes still come with leaf springs lol, hopefully the c8 will be different
Two engines that are Well over 50 years old, or soon to be 50, making reliable figures of power within the 500-600hp range. All of this, Naturally aspirated.
I'm all for the big blue oval was a chevy fan but got me an 89 mustang lx 5.0 it was enough to change me for good
love the FOX! 🦊
I've got 3 Fox Mustangs, they are cheap and FAST! I'm still building a 408 stroker. Hope to have it done this year, the engine at least. I've got some vids on my channel if your bored! LOL!
chevs allways cheap out.the 35-0 is a dog of an engine.good std, just dont touch it.ive allways had fords.here in aus.,my dad had holdens,gm,derivitive, never liked the design or mechanicals.small,cheap.cant beat a good clevo, top loader,9"..there a truck engine, tough.windsors are for race day..biggest rubbish chev sold was the 6.2 diesel, inc the 6.5 tdi.old buik petrol motor.good power but handgrenade..look up ford f1000,brazil.mwm 4.2tdi...you,never got them..
490+hp on an LS1 with a Cam, 750 Double Pumper, and Single plane Intake?!!! Thats Awesomeness 💯.
I'm actually confused, as they limited it to the factory redline of 6k. I'm willing to bet there was more left in it by revving it higher.
I'm a big block fan. I seen EFI 460 Modded. U can get way more torque than a LS9 modded. Big old engine hard to beat lol.
True story!
Cubes are such a great thing when you need real power
And a hell of a lot cheaper too. LS9 is expensive where the 460 has been around for a long time. Ford made a lot of them.
@@PropsandWings Yup. I won a $3000 burnout contest with a $200 BBF. By far the best bang for your buck.
There’s no replacement for displacement.
Must have a stud girdle. This motor will last a very long time. Good job 👍🏻
Watching him trying to put the distributor in was PAINFUL!!
Hey Joe E., I still have your old 65 Mustang fastback, "Pro Touring Pony", sitting in the garage! Waaaay back from the old TNN TV show HP TV.
Wow, David!!
david mack that was old school on Sundays
More more more budget builds!!!
Thanks for the carby LS1 segment, there's plenty of swaps into older cars going on that can use that setup on a budget.
I've seen one of these LS conversions at a Car Show. It was in an old Caddy and had custom valve covers on it that said Caddilac on it. Only about 10% of people noticed it was an LS engine.
It looked great in that 56 Coupe de Ville.
Ford is so ahead of the game.
I’ll take the old school any day!!
Torque? Couldn't take two seconds to say "...and the torque is ___." Torque is more important than horsepower.
Amen

Love that style dampener... keeps everything nice and wet.
Love the back catalog from RTM! Would love to see episodes of old Car & Driver TV (& Motor Trend)
Came for the 460 and stayed for the LS. Wish we could have heard the 460 idling. Nothing quite like a big block Lope . LS had a great idle sound. I know many of the new engines make fantastic horsepower and torque with an imperceptible smooth idle. But, I'm old, and Lopey rough idles bring back fond memories of my youth.
Why put a dizzy in the LS when you can just put in an MSD box. That allows you to use the factory sensors, coils, and plug wires with the carb!
My friends 78-ish ford truck that got ten miles to the gallon to get to the beach had a 460.
I thought this was about a big block Ford!. Not another boring LS Chevy.
Really considered a 460 for my 94F150 flareside. I got heads, roller block, pistons already on the rods, intake for a hydraulic roller 357ci Windsor! Even got a tci tyranny! The difference in the weight and the powershot will almost make up the difference! But, we have a 460/c6. Decisions, but the economic impact with today's crumbling economy, go with what u got!!
A 460 would move that PU down the road very well. If you're good with the gas bill, go for it!
@@eskieman3948 yea, I thought about it. Knew some guys back when I raced that put them in 150s. They probably bought every 69 to 71 Lincoln in 3 counties. They had a 68 Falcon (it would fit in that body, just used mustang mounts). But, I'd have to start all over! I got 3 sets of heads for the Windsor, 2 short blocks (ones a 95 roller), pistons already on the rods! Think I'm gonna sell those aluminum heads, the ported 289 heads will make more compression with the pistons I have on rods now! It's gonna be a rat rod, not ever gonna paint it!
My dads old mechanic said you didnt need a supercharger/turbo to make high hp. I thought he was crazy. Guess he was right all along.
Nope just cubic inches and let it breathe. All this smog bs hurts engines and fuel economy. And makes more pollution burning more gas. Seriously who thought feeding a engine it's own shit was a good idea.
well, the turbo route is now cheaper, tbh. not everyone wants 11:1 compression, a mooshy bottom end, and 8 mpg.
@@JamesSmith-lt5zz turbos dont feed and engine its own shit.
@@frigglebiscuit7484You don't know anything about making horsepower do you?
A steel distributor gear is more durable than a bronze gear.
Also, instead of using the drill method for pre-oiling,
I use a garden sprayer, refitted with a brass fitting and send the oil
into the oil sending unit port.
Be sure to use a garden sprayer for bleach,
as it has O rings that can take the oil.
Put oil in the sprayer tank, pump it up,
pull the trigger and pressurize the oiling system.
Works good for 20 bucks.
I can't stand it when they put an LS motor in everything. So boring. A lot of other engines make great power, so tired of LS builds. It reminds of evyone building a 32 fiberglass body kit car hotrod with a 350, turbo 400 tranny , 9 inch Ford rear.... boring, boring , boring!!!
Kurt Poblenz You just told everything!!!!
Because it works. But hell if I'm putting a 350 chevy motor in a 32 Highboy...
Adam Gardner ...how about an olds or nailhead.... or go all out & put a Chrysler hemi in it. With a small block 350 , it will look like everything else.... the Toyota Camry of hot rods ☹️
Why don't you post some links of some of the other, "more interesting" engines that you've built?
Jim Bronson .... I drive a 1933 dodge 5 window coupe with an early 392 Chrysler hemi. 10.5 compression isky hydraulic cam 290 duration 520 lift , with a tunnel ram , 727 with an 8 3/4 rear. Currently I'm building a 505 stroker 440 with a trickflow topend thats going in a 65 coronet hardtop with fiberglass fenders, hood, decklid & bumpers
you mention how much the budget build was but it would have been nice to include the general cost of the parts for the high performance upgrades to get it to 607hp
I agree. I watched the video a few times to find out, but you never said the cost of the high performance build.
Always selling that Chevy !
Brought to you by Trickflow,lol.
These guys are the best.
How to make an LS look like the 351W it was copied from lol
@@mikec9112 100% agree
@@mikec9112 how did chevy copy ford???? LS has nothing to do with this shit engine
Ford really screwed themselves giving the ls design to gm and deciding to go with the power monster 4.6 instead huh?
@Trigger some Liberals Hes a internet car guy. Knows it all, as you can tell.
Darkhorse393 modern-day Marvel LOL thanks Ford
how about you start showing whole dyno graphs to get a clearer picture of power production
That's why engine masters is way better
Because it's not a Chevy. If that was a 454 they'd have forged high compression pistons, tried 3 different intakes and carbs with jet changes, multiple timing changes, then nitrous
Installing oil pan bolts with an impact? Y'all are much braver than I.
Just what everyone wants.. A big mechanical fuel pump front and center in the engine bay
Or spend 1k in fuel delivery.
Or $150 for a Holley blue with a regulator
or don't be a pussy and regards in the thing properly with fuel injection. nobody is computer illiterate anymore, and if you can update Windows, you can flash a pcm ROM. learn some theory, get a cheap MDS and a subscription to global connect, and there is a whole world of GM calibrations and aftermarket support. for the money you spend to make it run worse, you can get a better cam and tune. and make way more power.
some of us dont have the 1200 plus dollars it takes. its not worth it for n/a.
Cleetus needs to watch this video about pushrod length
Engine power took a 460 Block and punched it out to 557 Cubic inches and made 850 HP with a Soild roller cam along with the Trick flow top end kit and made 1100 HP with some added nitrous.
I remember loving this stuff in the late 2000's. Some stuff announced on this video don't even exist anymore. Like that PowerToolBox stuff, the web page doesn't even work anymore. Makes u feel old doesn't it?
Nice love the 460. Badass engine I would take it any day. Not even getting into the ls but I will say what a crappy engine.
Good to see ls1 5.7 engine good in australia
How did this go from a 460 build to a GM mod??
And had to use a ford dizzy, looks to bulky with all that crap on th front of that Ls
Because the bias on these shows are evident. The 460 just stomps the ls bla bla bla.
I would love to see this engine in something like that old LTD they were talking about, or something that I've always wanted to do, swap it into a newer Ranger with some careful massaging.
have a 74 LTD 2 door with a 400c in it. can always use a new bigger motor. . already have a C6 in it ready to go
Becoming one of the best channels
Been watching them sense i was a kid on the speed channel i believe.
Put that in a 64 falcon 2dr HT!!! But make sure you upgrade the brakes, suspension and roll cage!
You had me till the LS came in.. again... I want to know more about the 460..
Yeah, this channel seems to default to a Chevy at some point in any Ford or Mopar build....
It's nice you use euro measurements for the engine and use 12 point bolts
OH crap a way to make an LS have the distributor in the front! WOW the mustang game is about to BLOW UP!
Y’all should be running a Innovators West dampener instead of an ATI, ask Kasse he will tell you what to choose 😁
Colby Sutton and they look so damn good
thedraftdoctor1 my dad is the lead builder at Innovators
Colby Sutton they should’ve used his P-51 heads too. That would’ve been 650hp easy!
Pistons (Compression) Killed the power big time. Put those dome pistons on it like you did in the bbc and it would have gained big power. Still good power for that motor.
Even the flat top TRW will get to about 10.5 with the stock head instead of those grand canyon slugs! Then close the intake valve a little later and still pump gas compatible with iron heads. 1 point higher for those aluminums.
No assembly lube on cam or lifters, no setting the distributor to #1. Did the same thing on the BBF and the LS. Just flopped it in.
I would like to see these guys put this in a "granny" '80's LTD. The panther platform though. 😂😂😂
Like that old Burt Reynolds movie where he had LTD with a 460 moving moonshine
What was the ford horsepower details and at what rpm? Most importantly, what was the torque? Wtf? Off into LS land.....
Technical Items they always throw LS sht in Ford episodes! 😒
607hp @ 7000 rpm
He only pulled it to 6k. But yeah I quick watching more than half the video turned into a chebby episode. Thumbs down from me.
Technical Items , Ford was about 600 HP
You guys are haters on chevy i mean chebby just jealous that chevy makes such a good motor reasonably priced and a million parts that the working man can actually afford and depend on i love the ford small block and the sound it makes dam good but it doesnt compete with any ls as in sales and parts ford didnt put any effort in trying to compete with the ls thats when i lost all respect for ford now if you want a coyote motor but who has that kind of money to work on it when you're just some schmuck welder working your ass off to make it with a family chevy does and im proud
For the LS build, was this episode from back before the msd LS coil controller existed? Because this seems like way more work and money than just getting an ls dual plane intake and an msd 6ls
Reminds me of all the SWEETHEART ROAD TEST the mags did back in the day ! PAID FOR BY THE MANUFACTURES ! Ever notice in NASCAR how shhivy will sponsor 25 cars to race against 4 o5 Fords . Amazing , and still can't win a race !! LOL !
I dont care what anyone says that crab ls is bad ass.
I want to give my 460 600 horsepower out of an F-250 Ford. Thats nice. be nice to trade you and buy yours
Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing (and hearing) an American V8 on a dyno. It’s the power at the rear wheels that matters. Crank hp vs. Rear wheel hp. How much is lost?
Build an FE like this!
Yeah a 428 stroker
They did a simple 390 years ago. Google it
Yes, with the aluminum aftermarket block and heads, 526 inches
Nice way to finish up a killer 460 build and then shit on it with an LS build.
I've got an '83 Ltd base model (the smaller one). It's got a running 3.8 v6 if you want to use that!!
I love this video but the slap in the face was the chevy engine covers 🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂
Ok so let me get this straight you have this so claimed LS1 motor that is and I quote:
1. Ford 5.0 H.O, 4.6Mod, 351W/C firing order
2. Ford cooling system
3. Ford Oiling system
4. Ford cross bolt mains
5. Ford angled Plugs
6. Ford ten bolt head pattern
7. Mind you the LS block architecture is a copy of the 4.6 Mod motor with thicker webbing. The 4.6 cast iron block handles 900hp which with the right tune can easily go 1000+ what they essentially did was adapt a cam into a modular block.
8. Ford symmetrical Windsor style head layout with fords 427 high riser ports.
9. Ford centered thrust bearing.
10. Ford kidney shaped combustion chamber which dates back to 1961 first used in the 390 HI performance Ford big block as well as the 427.
11. And Ford distributor placement in the front of the block instead of the back so again how is this a Chevrolet motor? This is down right Ford LS1 motor.
The LS block is based on Buick designs dating back to the early 60's with their aluminum 215 small block, including the deep skirted block. So, not copied from Ford there. The 4 bolt per cylinder layout was also not exclusive to Ford. All Buick did was simply knock 2 bolt holes off of the design to use 4 instead of 6 in later engines. The oiling system was also not copied from Ford. Yes, the oil pump may be in the front, but completely different types of oil pumps. The replicated port layout was also not exclusive to Ford. The wedge style combustion chambers, not really sure how those are a Ford design. Angled plugs, again, other companies used angled plugs, not just Ford. And on an engine that has no provision for a distributor, about the only way you're going to add one is to run it off of the front of the cam. So yeah, a retrofit kit for an engine never designed to use a distributor is probably going to have it in the timing cover. As for the firing order, GM used the same firing pattern in years past. There are only so many ways to fire a 90 degree V8 that uses a cross plane crankshaft. Absolutely none of that makes it a design that was copied from Ford. In fact, it shares more in common with a Buick 3800 Series 2 V6.
Will you try fuel injection combustion on the 460 now that you have a baseline with the carburetor. To see if you get more or less out of it or change power curves ?
Fuel injection is king.
Thomas Manges , just put a pro charger on it, a big Fucker like Daddy Dave
This was filmed years and years ago. No telling where that engine is now .
Richard Holdener took a late 60's 460 from a junkyard put in a better cam and a set of port and polished Iron heads and made over 600hp. Kind of makes me wonder hell you guys were doing "throwing out the rules" but apparently keeping some restrictions because you can't tell me a set of 50 year old ported iron heads are better than what's available today.
7:27 that breather is dripping oil, i wonder if the valve covers have baffles? cool engine though.
I missed what the benefit of the distributor part of the LS carb. conversion was. Would not the MSD LS box that handles ignition on LSX carb. swaps be a lot cheaper and far easier to do?
This channel is amazing
I think most that power was cam. Fast intake manifold magic stick from Texas speed and 500 hp is possible on engine dyno so this seems like a lot of work but ls1 is always gonna perform no matter what
