      @@tuxedoautotransport you can get a shortblock 454 with stock parts for $1500 $1750 but you would probably be better off getting a 383 stroker because for the same price you will get forged everything and then the top end is cheaper and it weighs 100 pounds less.. but for cubic inches yeah you're looking at $2500 minimum for a 454 short block with forged everything and not build for a Van.

    Me: mineral oil for the 1st 500miles, few acceleration full throttle under 3500 rpm. Normal use not exceed 2500 rpm for the first 3000miles. To seat the piston rings properly assuring good compression and avoid burning oil prematurely.
    Powernation: put engine on dyno fullllll throttle!!!! Max RPM!!!

    I realize I'm late to the party, and there are too many comments for me to read them all so forgive me if what I'm about to say is already in the record. I watched this and the Ford 460 video and noticed the 454 Chevy got the benefit of more generous cam timing. The 460 got a Comp 268 High Energy at 218 degrees intake/exhaust. The 454 got a Summit camshaft with 228/238 degrees intake/exhaust. This doesn't make for an even comparison.

    Why are we wasting time with peanut-port heads and a cam with small duration. Obviously these folks have no experience with the big Chevy engines, they need air, lots of it so get rid of those terrible heads and put on at least a very good set of large oval ports with the 2.19/ 1.88 valve package and a cam at least 20 degrees more duration. Something like the 049 or 781 head castings from the 1970's are great. Replace those pistons with something with at least dome big enough to generate 11 to 1 compression with the open chambers heads. If you're going to stick with a dual plane intake then cut out part of the divider and put a 800 cfm carb on it. Big Chevy are limited by the air they can consume so give it some.

    The BS of Ford vs. Chevy... you guys didn't even come close to using the same camshafts or a Ford specific camshaft when you built that 460. The 460 was a 218/.494 single pattern and this Chevy here is a 228/238 .540/.540. This is what happens when Chevy guys build Ford stuff. Although, they did use probably the worst BBC heads you can possibly find.

      The real rigging of the comparison was using low compression deep dish rebuilder pistons in the 460 from start to finish even with the aluminum heads. low compression is a major disadvantage for big blocks.

    So you got oval ports and rectangle. So see what chevy can do against the others with same bore and stroke combination? That would be a series we all would watch!

    Go to Car-Parts and look for a 1996 to 2000 Vortech 7400 out of a pickup ($700), its got a factory roller cam. Or better still get one out of a Topkick or Kodiak medium duty truck, it will have a forged crank. Both will have four bolt mains. Starting with a roller cam engines saves money, that's money to spend on a good set of aluminum heads. Don't go to big on the heads, 335cc is almost too big, a little smaller is better in most cases. Comp Cams sells a series of Marine cams that fit a street engine to a tee, the lift is moderate, under .550, because BBC does not have the best geometry. This will last many years with excellent power.

    I remember working on several Chevy 454s back in the 70s. The rocker studs used to loosen up so I tried different fixes; lok-tite and dimpling around the stud after tightening etc. But nothing seemed to work for very long, and after a while I decided the 454, with it's weak water pump and leaky gaskets, was not a very good engine. The 396/409 on the other hand....!

    • @bullettube9863
      @bullettube9863 4 года назад

      @Jack Russelle Lewis The 396 was actually a good engine, it produced 375hp in stock form but with the big 4bbrl carb and dual exhaust they could achieve 425. This made them less reliable, which is why GM came out with the 427. The 396 was an option for the corvettes, which made them very front heavy, but a real blast at drag strips. The 396/275hp engine was used in the GM 600-700-800 series trucks, it was powerful, reliable, and more economical to run and a good alternative to the 348. Where I worked, GM offered the Detroit Diesels in our trucks instead of the 396, but my boss decided to stick with the gas engines.
