    Use the factory cap with a factory oil filter. You definitely do not replace the cap everytime. This is why the motorcraft filter comes o rings. I would never put after market on any of my trucks.

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  5 лет назад +13

      The worst situation is when customer buy these trucks used, with an aftermarket filter on them, then proceed to fit the motorcraft filter into the aftermarket head. Not a good situation. Trying to help those guys and gals out.

      @@thoroughbreddiesel I understand. My advice to them is to get the oem cap from you or their local dealer and pair it with a motorcraft filter. I've seen the aftermath of cheap filters and caps. 6.0 is a great engine with great potential, and because of its poor reputation due to early tunes with to much timing, egr failures, and poor maintenance you can pick one up fairly cheap. Diesels are high maintenance and the 6.0 is no exception.

    With Aftermarket filters come with plastic star piece that is on top of standpipe. its yellow at 8:10 mark, that needs to be removed also. The factory cap and filter don't need that piece

  • @bikerdog2b

    Your stand pipe has the Fram style insert installed at the top end as well (white plastic cross).

    I work on 6.0’s a lot I’ve never even paid attention to what the aftermarket filter/cap combo say they are so easy to identify by just the height of the plastic cap the fuel pump/module on the frame uses the same cap as the oil filter FYI to anyone they are less than $30 at oriellys

    I have 2006 6.0. when I bought it 4 years ago it had an aftermarket filter and cap. But I bought an original type of filter. I was not aware of the differences till I tried to mix the two. It took me 2 days to get an OEM filter cap. At that time they were like $40.00, added to the price of 15 quarts of oil and a $30.00 filter. and 2 days without my truck.
    If you go into an oil change garage and have them change your oil and filter, most won't use an OEM filter they throw your cap away and use that thing he was calling a filter. Those Spanish people won't know any difference. But it will cost you over $40.00 to get a new oil filter cap. On top of that, they might just be using regular ole 5w 30 car motor oil in your motor.
    Since I bought the truck, I've changed my own oil every time. That's the only person I trust to use the proper stuff. If someone says they can change your oil for $75.00 you better just get dressed up as a sucker with a stick up your, you know.. because you're getting reamed. There's no way you can even buy the oil for that much. Or they plan on not changing your oil and just take your money.

    I hate these type of filters. My Cummins fuel filter is the same style and every time I change it I'm thinking dear Lord I hope that seated correctly because if it didn't your talking a several thousand dollar mistake. Spin on filters are the way to go. Pretty hard to screw that up.

    About 2 weeks ago I changed my oil with genuine motor craft filter- like you said the cap didn't fit-I broke the old filter loose and put the new filter in the old cap- fast forward 2-3 weeks- I have a bad oil leak- looks like it could be the base of the oil filter housing- would the wrong filter be the cause ofthe leak 2-3 weeks later?????

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  Год назад +1

      If you stressed the housing it could be. I don’t think that it will but its possible. Go back to stock cap and filter.

    At my job we have 2 6.0 550 work trucks and my boss made a bad decision. Both trucks had the aftermarket caps and at separate times about a year apart from each other under standard driving, the cap ripped about 3/4 the way around the top of it and out came all 15 qts of oil all over the motor . Needless to say we only use motor craft parts now. Stick with the oem stuff when it comes to that stuff for sure

    hello, thank you for this video, do you know what that (check valve assembly?) part is called inside the oil filter housing at the 6 o clock position, and if it's replaceable by itself? i was having hard start issues, removed it, and found the rubber washer deteriorated.

    Some parts you can get away with aftermarket, but on PowerStrokes, all filters, minus air, should be FOMOCO oil, and fuel filters, transmission as well. Otherwise you’re just asking for problems at some point in the life of these trucks.

  • @ryanmesser4238

    I changed the oil filter on a 08 E450 with a 6.0L in it. I couldnt get a filter from dealer so we got one from carquest. The canister was a bit shorter but not by much, and the amount of filter sticking up above top of can was about same as old one. Next day the customer said the filter blew off. And this is an E series so filter is beside oil pan, wondering if the aftermarket filter itself is the problem or the difference in length

  • @Yamaha-yj7nb

    What cap should I use if I run the oe filter and what length thanks? Looking at buying a 04 6.0 right now

  • @AllThingsRamdom
    @AllThingsRamdom 3 года назад +1

    Is it necessary to upgrade the oil cooler on the 6.0 if you install an oil and coolant bypass filter kit on it? You think the bypass filter kit would filter it better so it doesn't end up clogging up the oil cooler.

  • @williamshultz3598
    @williamshultz3598 5 лет назад +3

    I use WIX filters on the the 3 6.0 that we have and have never had a problem. I don't think WIX would ever sell a filter that wouldn't be right. The lawsuits would be huge. You just can't mix the 2 filter elements.

    There was never a issue with screw on oil filters. Just remember to inspect and clean treads for the possibility of metal shavings from the tread cutting process.
    The designers at International of this particular oil filter deserved to be kicked the nuts. Enough said. Just MPO.

    Man you need to remove the white plastic ring placed on the end of your standpipe. Its an adapter to use an aftermarket filter. You are effectively bypassing the filter all together with that still installed. Look it up on google and you see what I’m writing about. Critical mistake you made.
