Do you think mixing the additives in the recommended concentration to #2 diesel fuel would impact the results at all (Vs. stand alone testing of each substance)?
I keep coming back to this video thinking there needs to be a "diesel fuel additive" series. There are so many new products just in the last 2 years that I feel like we need more data to go along with it! I'd love to see amsoil, and Lucas oil added to the bunch. Also hotshots new products as well. As another comment suggested, doing a lubricity test with the correct dilution of fuel with additive might also change things!

Yep. Ran a service truck in the mid west and 911 works great at breaking the gelled fuel back down for a short time in the cold, but adding it before does absolutely nothing.

i have been driving the same sterling diesel box truck for 10 years and the only thing i use here in north dakota for anti gelling is 911. my fuel has never gelled up, not once. saying it's not preventative is 100% false. we have -30 or worse every winter. and i use sams club shit diesel on top of that, not that expensive full on winter blend stuff.
@Earl James I've jelled on howes a couple times... some people run coarse fuel filters and won't have much trouble. I've always run the oem recommend filters that are normally @5 micron or less
@Evermore, I use one entire bottle of Howes per tank, 300 total capacity. It's worked well, now I just run the APU and it powers the fuel heater, so I don't even stress any more while I am home and truck is parked.

I like project farm, I do, the comparisons he does do give a lot of useful insight but we still have to use our critical thinking with this stuff and also realize there are whole physics and chemistry specialties dedicated to understanding how stuff performs in given ways. Like… the diesel 911, it’s not an antigel product it’s designed to be used AFTER youre having problems with water and ice in your fuel… meaning it’s likely isopropyl alcohol based… so it “bonds” with the water and puts in in solution to be gotten rid of. All diesel fuel has water in it… it’s a question of how the water is mixed in…. So you can’t judge all of this solely based on the testing done here. Also… you can get isopropyl alcohol cheaper at Walmart in the pharmacy. And you can have an alcohol solution that in a bottle won’t freeze at very cool temps… but add in some water (aka put the additive in the fuel that has water) and suddenly it’s frozen at a much milder temp. All I’m saying is take this stuff with a grain of salt and do proper research to understand the full extent of the processes involved when asking a liquid mix of chemicals to do big jobs. Follow the directions on the bottles, contact the people that make the stuff… look up the msds to see if it lists the actual ingredients so you can understand what something really does. Bobistheoilguy is a good place to start as far as non peer reviewed stuff… but again you are your own warranty in this world so I always try to actually understand further and check as many sources as i can within the timeframe involved. And there are some circumstances where dumping some random snake oil or even something fine in one motor in your fuel can cost you thousands dependent on the machine.

My box of All in One arrived last week. I typically use Stanadyne, but thought I'd give the Amsoil additive a try since I begin using their diesel oil.
I use the cetane boost and fuel system cleaner from Amsoil on my 1981 Mercedes 240d diesel along with the Amsoil European 5w-40 Classic in my car and it runs like a charm.
Your videos move along and are well edited and you make it look easy but I want to compliment how much time you actually must devote to run these tests. Excellent work
Would also like to have seen Amsoil Diesel All In One in this test as it is an anti-gel, lubricator, and cetane boost in one product, as well as Optilube XPD
Not just Optilube XPD, that's the popular all around formula. They have other ones, I'm most interested in Boost! and XL, particularly when they're mixed together at their maximum treat rates. Boost is supposed to raise the Cetane Rating by up to 9 points and XL is supposed to increase fuel lubricity a great amount. I've used both together, Boost at the max treat rate and XL at 2 oz / 10 gallons instead of 2.5 oz / 10 gallons. They seemed to pep up my old 6.5 enough so it wouldn't downshift up the same hill at 50 MPH as much so i think they work. (I was using my ScanGauge II to test it, with these additives the MPG numbers were higher up the same hill with the same weather conditions and tire pressures than they were previously.)
Love it. Now we just need a regular diesel fuel additive test with lucas injector cleaner, diesel kleen, hot shots diesel extreme, amsoil diesel all in one etc.
I appreciate the way you ran this test. I have a driver who is 80 years old and has driven trucks all his life. He swears by Howe’s and I have often wondered which is best, now I can show him this.
Hi. I found your channel few days ago and I've already watched most of your videos. I'd like to thank you for your work. I find your videos very entertaining and I always watch them with curiosity.
Sir this You Tubes a gem! I use stanadyne since it is made by the same company that makes my diesel truck injector pump. It is pricy compared to other brands.... but a pump replacement is expensive and we do not get a second chance. Well, it looks like others may work but this test show me that there is a difference. Thank You.... it is more accurate than the baloney comments on FaceBook comments. that i normally ignore. This deserves a thumbs UP.
This was a great vid. As a recent owner of a large, diesel truck I've run into a lot of "religion" about diesel additives. It's good to see some science in action.
Yeah I used to make jokes about amazon oil but after watching this mans videos I’d trust amazon basic oil unless you are gonna be building a track/drag car ; it’s almost literally Mobil 1 performance wise
Brady Arnold only problem with amazon oil is since they only use the brand name and don’t make their own oil, they could change the oil supplier in the future and you’d never know
@@Yyote Yep, they've already done that with at least one of the products offered under the Basics label. 3d printing filament changed brands late 2019 - early 2020, and I'm sure that there are others. Only those paying attention will notice the changes, as they don't advertise it.
I’d like to see the PS DieselKleen tested at full dose, rather than half-dose. Or if it was, I’d like it to be specified what the dosing is - the Hotshots has 1 dosing option - 1 ounce per 8 gallons. The PS has 2 dosing options, and 3 formulations - the 1:400, 1:1000, and 1:1500 options. So, if we were using, for example, the 80 oz packaging, at 250 gallons, versus the below 0 option of 125 gallons, it’s literally 2x the dosing. So I expect the results to be significantly different depending on the dosing! And we are never told which dosing he uses. We aren’t told if the packaging was a 1:400 or 1:1000 mix option. I’m not as familiar with the others, but at least tell us what version, what dosing! That’s what Science is about!
Would love to see an updated showdown of diesel additive. There are numerous ones that claim they increase lubricity of diesel as well as add anti gel properties. Would love to see some of these other higher end additive brands tested.
Great video! I've been using Power Service diesel fuel supplement in my 2003 F-350 6.0 until I seen this video. It is cheaper than the Hot Shots Secret but the Hot Shots Secret looks like it performs much better. Quite an awesome set of tests you did and I greatly appreciate your work. Thank you!
I use the ps in the silver bottle on my titan xd cummins. Curious how ot would compare to the regular hot shots secret for everyday use, specifically lubricity, since it doesn't get that cold here in West Tx.
@@Jackmerius_Tacktheretrix how low did your temperature get February 2021? I’m in NE texas and it’s the first time Iv needed to use a anti gel additive.
@@GTObearclaw1 I was in New Mexico when this hit and we got down to -9 with the wind chill. I used service power anti gel and had no problems other than a rough idle for the first few seconds or so but it was at 4am and freaking cold 🥶
The lubricant test is near idyllic test case for for the Bosch CP4 failure which seems to cause anxiety in the late model Diesl community. Wondering if you wouldn’t mind doing another additive test, but this time focusing on different lubricity variants as opposed to Gel-ing. Hot shot lx4 vs ... for example. Thank you!! Objectivity saves THOUSANDS!!
The CP4 has cost Fiat/RAM a ton of trucks I know and Ford and GM are running these same pumps but I believe have stronger lift pumps , Just a guess. Your right they need to find the best additive for lubricity. Its imperative to keeping these fuel pumps alive. I have always used Schaeffers Winter fuel additive for diesel. They make very high quality Synthetic Motor oils and greases and are a local company so I have supported their products for decades. I hope PF tests this.
Recommendations for the next round: OptiLube XPD, Amsoil All-In-One, John Deere Fuel Protect Winter Formula, Summer Formula too just for fun. According to big study OptiLubeXPD was the best of the best. John Deere products weren't in that test but I've heard really good things about them.
Project Farm, if you would happen to do another test video using these products, I would love to also see you test Conklin’s two diesel products, Diesel-Plus and 4-Power D and I would be happy to send you a quart of each!
I don't have a diesel, any more, but when I did, I fully trusted Power Service products. You've changed my outlook. I've only seen a few of your videos now, but they are real world / very applicable. Thanks. BTW, I'm not seeing the suggestions for your camper's name in the comments. While I generally believe vessels should have female names, I think "Rover" might be appropriate.
Not only name it that, but go through and fix everything needed to make it an actual roadworthy coast to coast roadtrip & camping machine, doin as much as possible to fix and/or customize it with J.B. Weld, and duct tape! Maybe get in touch with Red Green, and take it up to possum lodge! :)
If you revisit the lubricity side of this test, I’d like to see the test done with the manufacturer suggested mix ratio with the diesel and see how well the needle bearings fare. Also bg dfc plus diesel conditioner added to the lubricity test. Bg seems to make good stuff. Thanks for the science!!!
Agreed, suggested mix, considering some (like summer+) treat 2500 gallons per gallon, where as others might treat a couple or a few hundred (mostly 320-640 or so per gallon) the cost per suggested treatment varies greatly
I'm so glad I found this video. It's winter time in New England and one of the truck froze last night minus 4. I picked up new fuel filters today and some of the house and some of the power service 911. I'm going to return both of them and go with your recommendation. Thanks for doing the test.
Second round should include: Penray Seafoam BG Motorcraft Motor Medic Lucas Mac's CRC FPPF These are the one's I've sold both in my time at a national auto parts store and 2 national class 8 tractor dealerships.
Great test. I've been using the Stanadyne for over twenty years now. Honestly, no surprise on how well it did in your testing. It's a must use, to keep GM 6.5L diesel injection pumps running a long long life.
I'm retired from GM now as a master diesel tech....stanadyne was always used where I worked...from the 6.5 to the duramax arrival and never had any issues Now granted I live in Southern California and we don't have that cold a weather here...but overall stanadyne was always used at our dealership
We use the white bottle of Diesel Service. It works great in all of our farm equipment and our semi. We live in Minnesota and often have to run our diesels at -20.
Nice vid :-) I'm using 2 stroke oil in all my diesels (LIQUI MOLY 2 TAKT MOTOROIL TSC3, 100ml on 50L tank), it helps a lot to save hi pressure diesel pump (no sulfur diesel fuel is the reason of failiure in 90% cases...). And I'm not worried about gel/wax in fuel, in EU we have other-witer norm for diesel fuel (with much lower freezing point). Also always change fuel filter BEFORE winter, if its dirty then it will clog up waaay quicker.
Transmission fluid has long been a known lubricant for diesel engines. Transmission fluid could also be mixed with kerosene fuel for anti-gel and a lubricant. Except if temps are sub-zero you don't want any Transmission fluid to slow your fuel flow down, I stop putting transmission fluid in mine when the temps dip to 40's and 30's Fahrenheit
I just bought my first diesel in October and have been asking farmers what they do for their work trucks thinking they are careful to make sure their investments are cared for. I was told to put the howes in my truck as we will get a few weeks of -20f° a year. Im disappointed it did so poorly. I will definitely be looking for some hot shots. Thank you so much for this unbiased review. Ill he telling all my farmers buddies about this for sure and good on Hot shots for making a good looking product.
Yeah my first thought. You can't compare them in the same test as 911 doesn't claim to be an additive of any kind. It's really an emergency thing you use when it's too late and it has a few competitors as well that don't claim to be additives either. The supplement did what it claimed to do like Howes at preventing gelling.
I've used it, and could go on for days about how good the product is. NEVER had fuel gel with it, and mileage improves with it. We had a piece of equipment which vandals had dumped water in fuel. Poured a whole bottle of PS in the tank, waited about 5 minutes, started up and we went to work.
i have used it to treat summer diesel before it got cold and it gelled up and looked like milk. 50% kerosene is the only anti gel that works. all stations cut their fuel by the time its cold so the additives are just a scam
@@flybyairplane3528 there is #1 and #2 Diesel in real cold areas people mix #1 with #2 but for truck drivers it's hard to get #1 in the south so when you drive from say TN to Michigan you have #2 in your tank you need an antigel to protect your fuel lines..
Great video and always so interesting! Just like Christina mentioned, a fuel additive comparison for lubricity would be followed like gospel for us diesel truck owners, with all of the CP4 fuel pump failures on the big three diesel pick ups going on.
I've always thought that the motorhome was named "Farmebeggo" for a long time. I'm surprised, that the 2 cycle oil did as well as it did, for reducing gel point temperature of diesel fuel. I never would have guessed that. ("Farmebeggo" sounds like it can use an exhaust manifold gasket)
Power Service makes a good product. It is all I have used and have been driving for 15 years. I use more than what is recommended but I have never had an issue with it.
Awesome, this is THE test everyone was afraid to ask for. Definitely opened my eyes. Only recommendation is a second control with red (FARM) diesel. I know you can do it, Project Farm.
Pretty sure the only difference is that Farm diesel is tax exempt for using in farm vehicles ONLY, and the dye is just so the cops can tell if you put non taxed diesel into your daily driver and fine the crap out of you if you do.
Many years ago Diesel Power magazine did the same test using a wear tester. One they tested that is not represented is Opti-lube XPD. In their test, Optilube came out on top. Strangely enough second place was plain old TCW 3 outboard motor oil.
Always fun watching your channel. Always learn something. Plus I really liked the beautiful RV. Kinda reminds me of Cousin Eddy’s on Christmas Vacation! Ha!!
Project Farm Can you test stp ultra 5-1 cleaner? I had a check engine light on for emissions then I used sea foam plus this new stp cleaner and my check engine light went away after one tank. I don’t think it was the sea foam bottle that did the trick. Thanks
Id like to see how the power service in the silver bottle does vs the hot shots regular additive in this same test. Specifically the lubricuty test. This would really help me decide if paying more for hot shots secret is worth it for regular use. But once again, your video proved to be very useful to me, so again, thank you for all of the work and research you do. It really helps us consumers put tremendously! You have the best tests out there by far! A true genius!
Again , Your " real world " tests are extraordinary , been a 1 truck owner / operator for 51 years & still learn more from Your tests , when I order from Amazon , I use Your links , Keep it Up !
Glad to see you tested how well the products protect against corrosion. While particulates cause issues with fuel system componets, i found rust/water intrusion to be the cause of the majority of warranty claims at the company i work for.
Todd, First off great channel and thank you for all the time you dedicate to as scientific and unbiased presentation of results that you can do without a full blown research lab. LOL I know the 2 stroke oil adds fuel lubrication but in fairness Amsoil's dedicated products for this application "Cold Flow" and "Recovery" should have been used in this test instead. As a lifetime Amsoil dealer that has experienced proven results over the last 30+ years I have been a dealer. Feel free to reach out to me if you need some for testing.
I actually think him not being in a lab is better. These are much more real world tests in the sense its exposed to elements where as a lab would be 100% sterile.
Well done. I needed this. I run everything from a 1956 MF35 to a 2006 Kubota. I will run Hot Shot or Stanadyne from now on. Thanks for saving my engines, Doug.

Some time in the future, I see PF logo on items that you test, you do independently testing like you've been doing and the best products are offered a PF stamp of approval for 2-3% of gross sales of that item, seriously any time I'm looking for a any type of handyman item I search your videos to find the product I'm needing

"The rat wagon" for the RV, and as for fuels, there's some who put Avgas into diesel in cold temps to stop it freezing, so could be worth another test alongside other fuels... :)
Would be nice to see the wear scar test done with the additives mixed with diesel at their manufacturers recommended doses. That is how we are using them in our engines. I use additives to try to protect my Bosch cp4 pump. Would also be nice to try to get some non ulsd fuel if available to compare the lubrication properties to ulsd.
I actually had a brand new diesel truck and took it on a hunting trip to eastern Oregon. It was about 10- 15 degrees for ten days up where we were camping and my truck would start but not accelerate at all when in gear. It idled in neutral but would not go when put into drive because the fuel was gelled up. I poured about a pint of chainsaw mix gasoline in the tank and let it idle for about 15 minutes and it worked! That’s the only “ additive” I use now when it goes below 20 degrees and my truck has 285 thousand miles on it with the original fuel injection pump!
I have used D911 in the past and it worked to get my tractor running after it was very gelled up. Amsoil makes some more diesel fuel additive products that you should test!

That overhead camera angle was pretty great. It definitely looked like some Hollywood stuff! Keep up the informative and entertaining work!
If it's anything like regular Amsoil I'm sure it's aces.
Love it. Now we just need a regular diesel fuel additive test with lucas injector cleaner, diesel kleen, hot shots diesel extreme, amsoil diesel all in one etc.
Thank you!
Great test, thanks! Please add those and test archoil as well please. I switched for stanadine to archoil last year.

Thank you very much for the positive comments! It keeps me motivated to keep making videos

Thank you!
Lucus has an anti gel for Diesel as well which I often use. I would love to see it tested as well sometime . I so enjoy your videos.
Thank you! Thanks for the video idea.
Would love to see an updated showdown of diesel additive. There are numerous ones that claim they increase lubricity of diesel as well as add anti gel properties. Would love to see some of these other higher end additive brands tested.
Thanks for the video idea.
Opti-lube is hands down the best. Would be a good test subject.
Thank you!
Thank you!
I use the ps in the silver bottle on my titan xd cummins. Curious how ot would compare to the regular hot shots secret for everyday use, specifically lubricity, since it doesn't get that cold here in West Tx.
Looks like mixing PS and 2 stroke oil would be a great combination. I get the $1 bottle from Wal-Mart and add it in on fill up.

Correct Christina, we are all freaking out on our CP4 pumps!
Definitely recommended this
Project Farm, if you would happen to do another test video using these products, I would love to also see you test Conklin’s two diesel products, Diesel-Plus and 4-Power D and I would be happy to send you a quart of each!
I came here to recommend Opti-Lube as well. Thank you.
But I would also recommend Opti-Lube Winter for its anti-gel properties.
I was hoping for Optilube as well. I've been running it for several years without issue in my Kubota.
I still appreciate the testing.

I don't have a diesel, any more, but when I did, I fully trusted Power Service products. You've changed my outlook. I've only seen a few of your videos now, but they are real world / very applicable. Great recommendation. Thank you
Agreed, suggested mix, considering some (like summer+) treat 2500 gallons per gallon, where as others might treat a couple or a few hundred (mostly 320-640 or so per gallon) the cost per suggested treatment varies greatly
Really enjoyed this especially the lubricity test. Every one of them claim to increase lubricity and nearly none of it is true
I'm so glad I found this video. It's winter time in New England and one of the truck froze last night minus 4. I picked up new fuel filters today and some of the house and some of the power service 911. I'm going to return both of them and go with your recommendation. Thanks for doing the test.

Great test. I've been using the Stanadyne for over twenty years now. Honestly, no surprise on how well it did in your testing. It's a must use, to keep GM 6.5L diesel injection pumps running a long long life.
Thanks! Thanks for sharing.
I'm at 16 years with my VW 1.9 ALH TDI using Stanadyne. Zero issues thus far - I add it to every tank full regardless of the weather.
I'm retired from GM now as a master diesel tech....stanadyne was always used where I worked...from the 6.5 to the duramax arrival and never had any issues
Now granted I live in Southern California and we don't have that cold a weather here...but overall stanadyne was always used at our dealership
I use the same in my 1995 gmc 2500 with the 6.5! Works great
You answered questions I've been wondering about since 1999 when I bought my first diesel. Thanks
Thank you
We use the white bottle of Diesel Service. It works great in all of our farm equipment and our semi. We live in Minnesota and often have to run our diesels at -20.
Thanks for the feedback.
@@ProjectFarm definitely going to look into hot shots secret through. Thanks for doing this testing for us
Nice vid :-)
I'm using 2 stroke oil in all my diesels (LIQUI MOLY 2 TAKT MOTOROIL TSC3, 100ml on 50L tank), it helps a lot to save hi pressure diesel pump (no sulfur diesel fuel is the reason of failiure in 90% cases...).
And I'm not worried about gel/wax in fuel, in EU we have other-witer norm for diesel fuel (with much lower freezing point). Also always change fuel filter BEFORE winter, if its dirty then it will clog up waaay quicker.
Great strategy!
Same here, saves quite a bit of fuel as well.
Add 2-EHN to raise cetane, easy cold start, less clatter, add with 2 stroke to lube.
I’ve used 911 when my 1070 gelled on me, pulled the filters and followed the directions and it worked great
With winter on the door step maybe you could test the de-icer spray's?
Great test idea!!

Thank you so much for this unbiased review. Ill he telling all my farmers buddies about this for sure and good on Hot shots for making a good looking product.

911 is supposed to be used after gelling not to prevent gelling!
The white bottle is a preventative, pink for after jelling has already occurred
I've been telling my boss this for years but it doesn't seem to sink in.
I said the same thing John, guys I work with don't seem to understand that either.
Correct
I’m a truck driver in Upstate NY and every company around here uses Power Service.
@@mikecubes1642 summer diesel doesn’t respond to additive. I do, however agree, there is a lot of snake oil out there.

Great video and always so interesting! Just like Christina mentioned, a fuel additive comparison for lubricity would be followed like gospel for us diesel truck owners, with all of the CP4 fuel pump failures on the big three diesel pick ups going on.
Thanks! Thanks for the suggestion.
Yeah this has been a remedy for a while, but in newer diesels (let’s say newer than 2004 possibly) can be bad news for stuff.
