- What does the English word ironic really mean?
In this video lesson we'll show you how the word ironic used in action. It seems to mean rather different things to different people.
Normally we use ironic in a couple of different ways. One is to describe how we say things.
When we use words with the opposite meaning to their literal meaning, we’re being ironic
. And the other meaning is similar. We could describe observations or comments as ironic when words are used with the opposite meaning to their normal meaning.
But some people use the word much more loosely. They might use ironic to describe unfortunate events or coincidences. We'll show you lots of examples in this video.

The best explanation of "ironic" I have ever heard! Thank you for it.
It is ironic that people who use word 'ironic' in wrong way are usually certain about it's meaning :)
So glad you liked it Nikolay. Thanks for writing. :-)
Title: "What does 'ironic' really mean?"
Me: made from iron?
Ha! Oh what a logical guess, PL is legal in EU! Great guess but totally wrong of course. :-) I guess we'd have to say something like iron-like or iron-ish for that.
That was a good one. I thought it too!
It is from the Greek word "εἴρων" ! No connection with iron.
Thanks for sharing that Dimitra.

Thank you so much Saad Ali. Be well and be safe :-)
I expected that irony and/or ironic means both - sarcasm and "made from iron" - and perhaps also the ironed clothing. To me, this seems the way the English language works. I don't know why they are doing that. They have enough words. Words don't need to share meanings. Especially not when, on the other side, there are 5 or 20 words for the same meaning. Hey, that's irony! And yes, I'm also sarcastic about it, but only because the reality is ironic!
So I was happy to hear that in this case the two meanings of "ironic" are so closely related that they share the same principal idea - one with regard to reality, the other with regard to a comment about reality.
Thank you for this happy start into the weekend! 🌈❤️🌞💐

Many famous writers used irony in their literature. Mark Twain could be an example. Portuguese writer Eça de Queiroz another one.
Claudio, thanks for letting us know about Eça de Queiroz. Much appreciated.
In your Keys example, it is ironic that, having had a new set made, they were found behind the photocopier.

(CBS Philly informed on 6 12 2020
Ah, so you're watching one of our local TV stations, Natalya. By the way (this is Jay writing back to you) I wanted to point out something about the way you wrote the date in this message. Most of the world, including Britain, would do as you have for December 6th, 2020. In British written English, you would see it as 6 December 2020. And the short form you used, 6 12 2020 is correct for native British English speakers. But to an American, it looks like you've written about June 12, 2020, because we would use the following for December 6th: 12/6/2020 :-)
@@SimpleEnglishVideos That is very kind of you, dear Jay.Thank you very much for your detailed explanation and friendly attention.
Yule Blessings and Happy Holidays to you and your family!
Great vid. As mentioned in this, we all often get ironic and coincidence muddled up.
Here’s a true story for you that I heard on BBC Radio 2 last year, where the subject was about ‘Irony’
A copper from Warwickshire Police travelled on his motorbike to attend a three day presentation/course with a colleague at a hotel in the Swindon area.
Over those three days, this copper had his motorbike stolen in the middle of the night. According to the BBC, the ironic bit was that the presentation was about vehicle theft.
I disagree with that, I believe there’s coincidence and irony all in the same scenario.
The coincidence being that the presentation was about vehicle theft, when the copper had his bike stolen, so a very unfortunate coincidence on his part.
The ironic bit was that it was a copper that had his property stolen.
irony looks like it means "coincidence", but ironically it means dissembler
You way of teaching is inspirational
Why don’t you have live classes?
If we had live classes, Ismail, we probably wouldn't have time to make our videos :-)
growing up, I never used "irony" or "ironic" to talk about something that was sarcastic or facetious. I also never used to use it to describe something being done "ironically" like someone wearing a 70s porn stache in a joking manner. I only ever really knew the definition for something "Strange or done expected" as in the examples of a house next to a fire station burning down, but I certainly never used it for the former uses.
We appreciate your comments and perspective, Ned. Thanks for contributing. - Jay
I was trying to learn some more Arabic in duo when a video about English language appeared in my RUclips notification box

Ironic situation...or sarcasm...Santa Claus in a plastic mask...
Since we expected Santa Claus to be without a mask, and open and friendly, seeing something else would be unexpected and a bit ironic.

We say that sarcasm is "bitter" irony

@@SimpleEnglishVideos I'm glad I was useful. Love you! Stay healthy!
So, using Morissetts's song verse regarding the man afraid to fly, if he was at the impact site of a falling plane, that would be ironic?
My neighbour started walling inside my garden yesterday, it is ironic because we had iron out all the misunderstandings between us the day before yesterday.
Yes, Md. Khurshed Alam, that unexpected nature of the event would indeed be ironic.
People are becoming so intelligent day by day, this is very ironic.
To know what I really really mean, here's a hint: I am using sarcasm twice here 😗

Nice to meet you. It can mean that, but normally it's more peculiar
Good observation, Alex! Thanks for your comment! Tom
Mmm, well that's an idea. So for example, use coincidence rather than irony, for example? That might reduce some AmE and BrE confusion. I'm not sure if it would always be possible though. Thanks

Hello! What does the word "cricket" refer to in your culture? By the way, I think that learning the culture is so important.
In American English a "cricket" is an insect like a small locust or grasshopper. Crickets also make a chirping sounds at night. There is also a cell phone company in the U.S. called Cricket.

I watch a video that explain in depth the accurate mean of the word ironic, the ironic here is that i know very well this word because it comes from my native language,Greek.
Is it really ironic that you would recognize a Greek word in an English Language training program? It might be surprising, but I don't think it has the kind twist of fate that we associate with irony. Thanks for watching.

Hi Suk. We're here with a new video every other week :-)
Going to college for six days is ironic , because we must still at home as much as we can(to prevent the Covid 19 spreading).
Is my sentence right or it is grammatically wrong?
I think the background music should be less, so we can focus on you more, but I'm not sure if this is an ironic occasion. On the contrary, on the condition that your voice volume was much higher that we would not be able to hear any word of your conversation, then we can call it irony because the video seems not to be working with its original essential target.
Yes, it would be ironic if the music was so loud you couldn't here the English lesson. We always try to create a balance between the music and the voices. Most of the time we get it right :-)
@@SimpleEnglishVideos thanks for your feedback.
Just a kind reminder. If you speak six languages, that does not mean that you are an ironically good linguist or a linguist at all. It only means that you are a polyglot. Being a linguist is something completely different

unfortunate twists of fate
