  • Learn some common words and phrases we use to talk about lies and lying in English.
    We look at some things we say when we think other people are lying like:
    - You've got to be joking
    - You've got to be kidding
    We explore lies we tell other people like fibs and white lies, and also things we say when we kid ourselves.
    And we also look at some idioms like
    - lying through your teeth
    - stretching/bending the truth
    - caught red-handed and come clean

Those are the great examples of kidding ourselves! To be honest I'm also trying to count the calories, but it's really difficult. I'm literally eating the last pieces of chocolates at my home while watching your video :D I hope I won't eat sweets in near two months. I decided "no sweets at home=less chances to eat them" :D. "...sifting a hundred lies..."?

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  3 года назад

      Hi Natalya. Sifting is the process of separating large bits from small bits. We sift grain in a sieve to separate the smaller bits of wheat from the larger chaff. We eat the wheat, but throw out the rough parts or chaff. In the Sherlock Holmes story, they are sifting facts from lies. While it's a mental process rather than a physical process in Sherlock's case, the result is the same. They get to throw out the useless information and keep only the important information. I hope that helps. Be well and be safe.

    Does "catching red handed" is the same as "catching flat footed?"

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  3 года назад +3

      Hi Lukasz. When someone is caught flat footed, it usually means they aren't ready to do something they should be ready for. So it's not the same as being caught red handed. A good example might be when a politician is asked a question he or she should easily be able to answer but cannot. That politician was caught flat footed. The expression comes from sports. An athlete should be on his or her toes ready to move instantly, but if they fail to move when necessary, they have been caught flat footed.

    Hey guys! I don't usually tell lies, I'm pretty bad at it. If I lie, I get anxious and it gets complicated... I always think I can get caught, so I prefer to say the truth or not say anything at all 😂 Are you guys good liars?

    I know that Vicki once told us, that she used to live in Japan and even learned Japanese. Do you think that English or Japanese is easier for a European to learn?

    • @jackmartin641
      @jackmartin641 3 года назад +1

      I am american (unfortunately) and I can tell you that English is probably easier to learn for most Europeans. English has a lot of latin and greek root words and there are many similar words in English to other European languages. Japanese has no connections to Latin or greek and their writing is completely different. The only thing about Japanese that is easier is the pronounciation.
