- Make your English more natural and fluent with 31 useful English word pairs. These binomial expressions will make your English sound more colloquial and conversational.
They're all collocations, fixed expressions where two words predictably occur together.
We start off with some easy ones like salt and pepper and knife and fork and then move on to some you might not know like:
an arm and a leg
touch and go
high and dry
to and fro
thick and thin
flesh and blood
kiss and make up
meat and potatoes
and lots, lot more.
We'll show you what the word pairs mean and how we use them in action so they're easy to remember and you know how to use them yourself.
If you liked this video you're going to like some other's we have in the pipeline with more binomial expressions.

9:10 Is it spoken at the wedding? Maybe "I'll always be with you, even through thick and thin." or something like that.
The typical language in a wedding related to that would "for better or worse."
thanks a lot for your support and videos :)

Another great video. By the way, that's a cool lava lamp in the background!
LOL, Andrew. We bought that for a '60s costume party and we've kept it running ever since. Thanks for watching our video.
I didn’t know most of them partially cuz these colloquial idioms are not taught in schools in Japan by and large. And I found “flesh and blood” useful in multiple occasions. Thanks for a lovely and informative video as always!!
Hi Mae. Great to hear from you. And we're very glad we could introduce you to some new word pairs :-)
This video is very very useful to understand a bit more the native expressions that make the difference during a conversation! Thank you very much! 😊
Yes, English conversation is full of them. So glad it was helpful, Jaky! Thanks for writing. :-)
I always thought that the meat and potatoes of your videos is the comedy and the learning part was just spices and herbs
LOL, what an interesting observation, Димитъ. Thanks for that and thanks for watching.
Really useful pairs of words.
We're glad you found them useful, Bee Queen. Thanks for watching.
Incredible 😻

You are fired ! Hahaha. I liked it.
Hey guys I have another conversation
Vicky(customer): Do you have sugar?
Jay (Shopkeeper): oh I am afraid. We don't
Vicky: Jaggery?
Jay: Sorry Ma'am.
Vicky: tea?
Jay: very sorry
Vicky: lock?
Jay: yes we do
Vicky: then, why don't you lock your Shop.
--Jay shocked (as usual..)
Ha! That's terrific, Yamini. If you keep writing sketches for us, one day we might try to record one. :-)
7:31 Polish people, do you remember Julian Tuwim's poem "Okulary" ("Glasses")?
Polacy, czy pamiętacie wiersz Juliana Tuwima "Okulary"?
(Biega, krzyczy pan Hilary
"Gdzie są moje okulary!"...)
"Touch and go" is also used in aviation. We you land on an runway then put full throttle and take off without stop. That's what we call a "Touch 'n Go"...
I am extremely befuddled ..please set this out
@@rifalwuchun4603 Yes... it's very used and useful when you learn. You don't need to stop after landing, track back (on the runway or on the taxiway) then take off again. You just roll a bit after landing (how far depends of course of the runway) then set full throttle and take off a gain to make what we call a "circuit"... Cheers
DiGi, this is Jay writing back to you. It happens that I am also a pilot and have done many 'touch and go' practice landings over the years. Thanks for reminding us about that useful word pair. And thanks for watching.
good. i enjoyed it.
I think there are 3 sounds that are in great contrast between British and American English:
the American flapped 't', the British non-rhotic 'r', and the British short 'o' /ɒ/ sound.
Could you make a video about these three sounds, or about the sounds that you think are the most striking in contrast? I know you've made videos about the rhotic/non-rhotic 'r', and about the short 'o' sound, but I would love you to describe these sounds in one video.
Oh, also the trap-bath split comes to mind.
Mark, we'll add it to the list of possible videos. Thanks for the suggestion.
your channel is brilliant! I love how you make videos, it is very interesting and unboring to watch.
I have learned a lot of useful information about English, thanks to you!
greetings from Russia
лысая гнида, greetings from Philadelphia, We're so pleased you've been able to learn from our videos. Thanks for letting us know and thanks for watching.
Very interesting
Great video, could you make a video about differences between American and British English spellings?
Hi Michael, we've done some of that in this video: ruclips.net/video/6mfUXnx00Zg/видео.html but we certainly can do more. We'll add it to the list. Thanks for watching.

In Brazilian Portuguese we have a similar expression to "meat and potatoes" which is "feijão com arroz" (beans and rice). It has the same meaning. i.e. before learning the advanced material, do your beans and rice.
Thanks for sharing that Bernardo. As it happens, we have enjoyed beans and rice in Brazil :-)
Your videos are so fun and interesting! This helps me to learn new things easily, thank you

It's funny about "meat and potatoes", I didn't know this, because I've heard from an american "pork and beans" with the same meaning, however he is from Texas. Love you both.
Іван Омаров, this is Jay writing back to you. I can see how that might be an expression in some parts of the US, but I haven't heard it used that way. But then again, I'm from New York. :-)
You are awesome !!!

I have a question please, which one is more formal ( me and you or you and I )?
That's a little difficult to answer, Sikhar because it depends on whether or not a preposition preceeds the phrase. Here's a link that might help explain it better: www.lexico.com/grammar/between-you-and-me
