      @SlowEasyEnglish  3 года назад

      Insane basically means crazy but I think it's a legal definition used in courts of law, not medical.

    Sir, you are doing the Lord’s work. I have a disorder. Whenever I hear the word irony used, I have to say the definition, or how I personally define it, to myself and then try and make the way it’s used, fit the definition. 99% of the time, I can not make it fit! Example: It’s so ironic I’m watching this night routine at night. Me: Irony is the opposite of what is, or might be expected. I wouldn’t expect someone to watch a night routine at night? I don’t know, might expect that. And that’s just one example of hundreds! I believe irony to be the most misused word in the English language. It is used in place of humour, sadness, surprise, sarcasm, as you said. Ohhhh, sarcasm. There was a story about an “ironic” T-shirt, getting a passenger kicked off a flight. I believe the T-shirt said hail Satan. When I read the article, my head almost exploded. I said, if irony is the opposite of what is or might be expected, then how the hell is this ironic???? You wouldn’t expect a passenger to wear a Hail Satan T-shirt? Why not? Is she a nun?? No, she’s just a woman. Correct title would be: Nun’s Ironic T-shirt Gets Her Booted Off Flight.

      Also last reply, I promise. One of my favourite examples is an old movie with Judith Light. The line, I believe, is “It’s ironic, Gary. She spent her whole life trying to get away from here. Then she crawls back to the very shack she was born in, to die.” I wouldn’t expect a woman to use her last ounce of strength, to crawl back to a place she spent her entire life trying to get away from, to die. Ahhhh, don’t you just love when it’s used correctly? It just makes you feel good all over.

      What he’s saying is you wouldn’t expect someone to direct you to stay away from an inviting, friendly, warm place. And you wouldn’t expect someone to complain about extremely low prices as highway robbery. If it’s the opposite of what is or might be expected, then it is ironic.

      Deleted. :) If someone disagrees with me, I have no issue with that but they need to explain why they think I'm wrong. (I'm not perfect. I might be wrong sometimes!) But just spamming my channel saying I'm wrong and nothing else is going to get removed.

    How is this not just sarcasm?

  • @JonFrumTheFirst
    @JonFrumTheFirst 3 года назад

    The confusion most often encountered with the use of the word irony is not the use of sarcasm. Far more often, it comes in the form found in the Alanis Morissette song Ironic. Here, she sings of a person getting what they want, but only after they no longer need it. In her words:
    "An old man turned 98
    He won the lottery and died the next day
    It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
    It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
    And isn't it ironic, don't you think?
    The problem is that I can't think of a word for the situations she points to. A late death row pardon may be a tragedy, but it's not irony.

      Thanks for your comment. I think you are confusing verbal irony, situational irony and sarcasm.
      In this video, I am using (verbal) irony, not sarcasm.
      Now if I *had* gotten it wrong, (I didn't), then your last statement would be referring to situational irony, not verbal irony.
      These two videos will help you understand the difference:
