- and isn’t it ironic, don’t you think?
Alanis Morisette’s iconic hit “Ironic” has led to decades of speculation, but it remains a great song.

Whether she meant it or not, writing a song called Ironic that may or may not be irony-free, making it literally Ironic, is brilliant.
I always thought that was the point of it lol now that I'm seeing it was probably accidental, well... Guess you can call it a happy accident lol
Debatable, but fair
So ironic
What an icon
Fv ©]< off. She didn't understand the concept of irony. She may now.
She is definitely one of the greatest artists to come out of the 90s period. Jagged Pill really got me through alot. Her delivery on that project was emaculate. Fire body of work 👑
My mom says that about that album, too. It got her through her divorce.
I saw Alanis in concert summer 2022. She is amazing live. Her voice is so powerful! As a 90s kid Alanis was everywhere and everything. She was huge in the 90s. This album was huge!!!! I love Alanis!
Pat Benatar, garbage, then Alanis performed almost back to back in my area for a month. I could only go to two performance and unfortunately Alanis wasn't one. I had so much fun at the other two but I'm always thinking about seeing Alanis someday now lol
I truly, intensely grew up on "Jagged Little Pill" - my dad would play it back to back in the car on road trips, and I took the CD with me to college in 2005 and played it a ton. It has some sharp edges on it, yes; "You Oughta Know" is angry. "All I Really Want" is rebellious, "Perfect" is raw, "Right Through You" is confrontational - "Forgiven" and "Wake Up" are critical of others... but to me it's always been the perfect balanced album. Every emotion and every topic a young woman could struggle with is on there, PLUS some true softness as well (Hand In My Pocket, You Learn, Head Over Feet, Mary Jane - heck even Ironic is sweet even if it's incorrect). I feel like critics who found the album too angry were just not comfortable with young women not just being sad.
I think you nailed it! 🎯
I love Alanis❤
Same!
Although came out in 1995, "Ironic" was shunned after 9/11 due to it's reference to a plane crash.
Anyways, this was the last song Alanis had written with Glen and was to be one of the "non-autobiographical songs" on the album. Meaning, it wasn't inspired by any situation or feeling Alanis experienced during that time. She asked Glen during a lunch, "Wouldn't it be ironic for an old man to win the lottery and died the next day?" and ten minutes later they recorded it in the studio.
For anyone who wants an Album that touches the soul, Jagged Little Pill is one of those albums. It had broken so many barriers for the music industry, WOMEN in the alternative rock genre of the 90s. While she was deemed as an "Angry White Woman," Alanis is a sensitive soul who writes songs from the heart. Once they're finished recording, she is freed from those feelings and it is up to the audience on what they think that song means.
I hate that I can't say the word ironic without someone going "dontcha think"" at me.
More Canadian artists like this, please.
this cd came with me nearly every day to school as a child, i looked up to alanis like she was a grown-up half-sister. i think this song in particular is appealing to kids, because it's sort of like the mysterious mundane, it makes you stop and look at the strangeness of little annoyances - and then scream the chorus. pure catharsis!
As an English Major this song has driven me crazy for years, and I’m glad someone finally addressed the fact that ironically, little of the lyrics represent irony.
Her voice is something else, so unique
They could say what they want.. but 27 years later and I _still_ know all the words. 💯 (Not my genre of music, nor did I ever even own the album/song)
Can you also do this type of dissection on Beyoncé’s Deja Vu?
I’ve heard plenty of times the Lyrical context of the song doesn’t fit the actual definition of the term. This video reminded me of that!
Great Album. I bought it in ‘95 and it was the soundtrack to my senior year of high school (class of 96). Lot of great, timeless albums came from that time too:) A verse from “one hand in my pocket” was on our senior shirt. It rained on our graduation day and our class had to graduate indoors, instead of outside and all of us were singing, “it’s like raaaain on your graduation day!!!” To this day, when I hear that song, I flash back fondly to that day and era of my life.
This album is a masterpiece both for women, rock, feminism and just music. This album is one of the best selling albums of all time at over 33 million records and the highest selling debut for a woman of all time. It’s considered one of the best albums of all time and was a cultural shift. Critics may have made fun of the song back then when she was a force that broke the mold of what a woman’s place was in music and rock but nearly 30 years removed this song and album are looked at with reverence. The album itself covers so many topics from angst, religion, struggles of being a woman and finding yourself and living up to others expectations.
But for this song She legit made a statement on the song. She said:
“ "[With] the old-school definition of ironic, I think it would definitely not be filled with ironies," she said to host Ricky Camilleri. "The new-school Webster definition, I've had people come up to me showing me the dictionary saying, 'see, it is ironic!'"
There are a lot of people that have shame around being stupid, and I did too. It was embarrassing to have the planet basically say, 'you're a dumba--' for your malapropism." She added, "We weren't being precious about it--honestly I thought 10 people would hear that song. Although there are times where I'm grammatically very intense and very perfectionistic, there are other times where clearly I don't care and I make up words and I play with words linguistically like they're paint."
But ultimately, Morissette said that she still enjoys the song. "And at the same time, it is ironic that a song called 'Ironic' isn't filled with ironies. And I love that song, and I love that era."
Jagged Little Pill wasn't her debut. Alanis had several albums has a teen act in Canada. The highest selling debut by a female artist is Baby One More Time by Britney Spears with 30 million copies sold ww. Whitney Houston's 1985 debut album is number 2 with 25 million copies
@@AngeBiampandou jagged Little pill, sold 33 million albums and it was considered her debut album. You don’t have to agree with me but that’s what it is.
I don't care that it's not ironic-this song felt so relatable and it still holds up to feeling understood and happy whenever I hear it. I love that Alanis gave us Jagged Little Pill!
You know what is ironic a song that is supposed to be written about irony, but has nothing about irony. Isn’t it Ironic, don’t cha think?
It is Ironic but I think the silliness of the video may have blinded people from the message.
'Jagged Little Pill' is a true iconic classic but her follow up album 'Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie' is her artistic masterpiece 🤎
My high school English teacher literally showed us this song to help us understand basic irony lol
Alanis dropped one of the best albums of 2020 and I see nobody else talk about it besides me. Justice for “Such Pretty Forks in the Road” let’s all go stream it now!!!!!!!!!
Screaming isn't music LMFAO that is why nobody brings up that irrelevant album
okay, I'll check it out
@@knifegoesingutscomeout868 isn't that what made Billie Eilish and many other artists big, tho? 🤔
@@QueenZsWorld I hope you like it! You should especially listen to Smiling, Nemesis and Pedestal which is my personal top 3
Can we appreciate the fact that Jagged Little Pill is one of the biggest selling album of all time globally having sold nearly 40 million records globally. Whitney Houston's The Bodyguard takes the #1 spot with over 70 million copies sold as of 2023. Shania Twain and Alanis rival each other with their perspective albums. I'm not sure how much Come on Over sold, but both Shania and Alanis are neck and neck leading the pack of albums from Madonna, Mariah Carey, other Whitney Houston albums, Celine Dion, Toni Braxton, Janet Jackson Adele, TLC, Spice Girls, Tracy Chapman, Lauryn Hill and Britney Spears that have mega selling albums that have sold over 20 million copies globally and are regarded as some of the greatest selling albums of all time.
It’s crazy because this or you oughta know weren’t the first songs I ever heard from Alanis. I remember watching MTV in the late 90 as a kid. This video would come on with her standing naked in a subway. The song was “Thank you” and I just found the timbre of her voice so interesting and I fell in love. Incredible artist 🔥
I always enjoy your videos! 😊
Ironic reminds me of my mom and when I listen to it I always get nostalgic.
I really like her. I think her career however suffered from the fact that her first album was so good that the rest of her work and the albums that followed didn’t hit as much
Jagged Little Pill is officially her 3rd album but she doesn't acknowledge her first two as her ''crossover success'' but they're just as good......Plus I think the rest of her work suffers from the fact that she likely fell out with Glen Ballard who produced Jagged Little Pill and Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie........It's heavily rumored that Alanis hardly did a thing on JLC and took all credit from Ballard......
The second album was sorta experimental and lacked the rock hits JLP had. Still thank you did well but other singles flopped bad. The third album had one hit and again rest of the material was too weird or lukewarm for the masses. She had a very distinct style that wasnr for everyone and her later albums more and more demanded you to focus on lyrics. JLP was very artistic but it had those rock hits that were way more easy to digest compared to average alanis song.
They even make fun of the misuse of irony in the Jagged Little Pill musical.
Hi Honest can u make a video on George Michael & how he's the most underrated artist from 1980's Era (similar to a documentary) because he deserve so much more credit in my opinion. People always talk about MJ , Whitney Houston, Madonna & Prince BUT nobody talks about George Michael & his impact & influence in music.
RIP King, George Michael is one of the GOATs and a true gay icon
@@hunterwilliams8923 4 Sure I just wish Honest would make a video about him already
I’m working on it.
@@honestboy YAY !!!! 💚💚💚😁😁😁👍
Oh my gosh yesss. Father figure and Jesus to a child are life-changing songs. George michael also is the only artist to ever pull of the live version of queen “somebody to love”. You gotta see that performance if you haven’t. He sang it PERFECTLY, like unrealllll.
Her first albums music was mostly written by dave navaro, and flea from the red hot chilli peppers. Thats why her first album was so different and slightly heavier on tracks like "you ought to know" i remember when it came out. That thing was huge
this is so insanely timed ive been randomly listening to this song all week
An alternative rock classsic!!! 🤟🏻
My teacher showed us this song and went through the lyrics in algebra. He died of cancer. I feel bad but I think of him when I think or hear of the song
Always loved her vibe, music and name!
Hey can you please make a video about Adam Lambert? Thank you.
So, if it is not irony, what figure of speech it is then?
My high school English teacher spent a whole class period on this
Genuine vulnerable brilliant.. so talented. Love her
verse two is also my fave part of “ironic”
The irony is none of it is ironic *except when someone else in the song says something - **_"well isn't this nice?"_*
*I think something can be ironic and extremely unfortunate at the same time idk but yes i guess it doesn't fit the typical playful ironic situation*
Ah, you're in that phase lol
What’s crazy is that one of the ads on this video was for Alanis Morissette’s upcoming appearance on American Idol 😂😂
Seeing Taylor on the drums ...💔🕯️🕯️
Alanis isn't the best songwriter but she's a real artist, great singer, who built her career on her own material, no matter if it was brilliant or lame, it was 100% hers. 🙏🏻
Can you please do 2pac’s 1995 classic album me against the world album because though it was not the last album 2pac released, me against the world is arguably his most accomplished and important. By capturing just how suffocated he felt at every level of American life he created a damning indictment of the country that that hated him back.
It’s Robin Sparkles y’all! Let’s all go to the mall!
She’s a very talented musician. It’s a shame she stopped making good music.
Read Kafka
Wow I’ve never heard of her 😅
And how old are you ?
The ultimate irony is that there is none
She is so frickin' talented...
alanis got married where i work ❤
It's meeting the man of my dreams... and meeting his beautiful wife... who happens to be my relationship therapist.
Love her! Jagged little pill is the absolute best
Ed Byrne.
Those who know, know...
Please do a video on Caroline Polachek's *Desire, I want to Turn Into You*
That's crazy bcs I always use her lyrics as examples of irony. She created a classic fr tho 🔥
all amma say is i know you otta know and one hand in my pocket. not ironic. but my ex did send me the ironic song and said i was too ironic for him,,,, guess he meant to say iconc
Unrelated but I miss when she had super long hair. It was so hottt
The thought, "isn't this nice," while an airplane is crashing is ironic.
I always thought that the examples that weren't actually irony on a song called "Ironic" were the most ironic. My 12 year old self thought she was a genius.
I might be the only teenager (Gen Z) that actually listens to her music. I never here her impact talked about a lot these days which I feel is unfortunate when she’s basically the pop rock blueprint for today’s artists. And people only talk about this album when “Supposed Informer Infatuation Junkie” is her best album to date (But “Rug Under Swept” is my favorite Alanis record “Hands Clean” is THAT SONG!) I just feel like her entire unique discography deserves some kudos. The new girls of today could never.
The song itself was ironic, thats the point
Shakira used to be her 👀🎶
Still one of the greatest songs of the 90s.
Damn. That's ironic
Why did u stop speaking abt ariana grande?? Do u hate her now and switched to be a taylor swift fan?
Wut
Irony is the gap between what is and what should be. Her use of the word is correct
