    I always admired you first as a person and second as one of my most admired singer/songwriter. Now thirdly as a dog person. I never had a dog until I was 57 , and I look back now I don't know how I did without one. I started with two bernese mountain dogs and ended up with five and began the process of breeding them. I'am now older and breeding is a lot of work so we no longer breed. We have two berners left now. They are our life. They seem to understand more thas some humans. Thank you for sharing this with me. All the best to you , you look great . James /Canada

He past away last October after making it to 10 years old. We miss him every day. If she can't help you she will tell you who can. Good luck . James And Ana . Your friend from Canada

    The line, "Slipped the surly bonds of earth," from that last song - about Kate McGarrigle - is from the famous poem "Flight," that was a favorite of Ronald Reagan, and is known to most pilots. Emmylou's Dad was a pilot in the US Marines. My Dad knew the author, John Gillespie McGee, in the US Army Air Force in WW2; he died - of Tuberculosis(which was pretty common, then - the great guitarist, Charlie Christian, died of it, too, a few years later) - at age 24.
    Kate was the mother of the great singer, Rufus Wainwright(his father was Loudon Wainwright, who wrote the singular song, "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road"), and she and her sister were the core of a whole tribe of singers and songwriters and musicians from Canada and the US. Everyone should check them out.
    This entire video was a treat. Thanks for posting this.

      Just a few notes on John Gillespie McGee, who, according to Wikipedia, died at age 19 in a mid-air collision while flying a Spitfire for the RCAF. His father was American and his mother British. I believe some Americans joined the RCAF because the U.S.A. was not yet in the war. Amazing that he wrote such beautiful poetry at such a tender age.

    It's a bit odd she talks about the "chance meeting" with Parsons because it was other members of the Flying Burrito Bros that saw her in the club and told Parsons about her and made the effort to get him to visit her- in her home where they sang together and created that chemistry..

    • @cjcarp9438
      @cjcarp9438 7 лет назад +8

      It was still a " Chance Meeting " what are the odds that a member of TFBB would just happen to hear Emmylou performing and calls Gram and tells him he heard this Folk Singer that just might make a good Country Singer so Parsons calls her sight unseen without ever hearing her sing ? ...life is all chance,

      It was Chris Hillman who heard Emmylou and was going to ask her to join FBB. But then that band broke up, so Chris told Gram about her and gave him her phone # and told him he might be able to teach her country music, so he gave her a call. At that time Emmy was singing basically Joan Baez and Buffy Saint Marie folk songs. Emmy and Gram met up, went to her house..started to sing a few songs, and the rest is History. He hired her on the spot and asked her to join his newly formed band called The Fallen Angel's. About a year and a half later Gram was dead from a drug OD
      Oh what could have been!

    • @DavidSmith-ss1cg
      @DavidSmith-ss1cg 3 года назад +1

      @@tomtorrell8019 - I don't know how old you are, but when Hillman saw Emmylou that night in DC, she was no stranger to country music, but she was more of a pop singer with a country flavor, as was popular then. She WAS, however, an experienced journeyman musician, with a solo album, and she was smart and willing to work. She became Gram's protégé, and she was clearly on her way to bigger and better things.
      As a very young bandleader, she encouraged everyone, and soon developed the reputation for putting on great shows. Everyone says that she's great to work with. This concentration on "it's more important to be nice" has led to a long and fruitful career; the pop psycologists and social commentators call what she does naturally "networking."
      When she met Gram Parsons, she was hanging out with Bill and Taffy Danoff, who wrote "Take Me Home, Country Roads" and later had their own pop group, and another smash hit, "Afternoon Delight." So Emmylou Harris didn't just fall off the back of a turnip truck and land in front of Gram Parsons, hip pop-star genius. There was lots of hard work and many miles on the road to go. And she's still a gracious Southern Belle like the great ladies on the Grand Ole Opry she has always knows about.
      In Linda Ronstadt's book, "Simple Dream," Linda tells us the story of when she met Emmylou - "it was a thing, when good girl singers met, to find out who their favorite girl singer was." And both of 'em said, "Dolly Parton." That was February, 1973. And, soon after, Emmylou got a call from Linda, and went over and met Dolly, and they sang together - and they've been friends since then. It's a shame that they didn't record more; that could've been a new genre of music by itself. All of the Trio are US National Treasures.

      Yeah not a strong interviewer, kind of a waste. I was let down when she started talking about Gram Parsons and his only response was “well we all rely on chance...,” generic dumdum.

    • @DavidSmith-ss1cg
      @DavidSmith-ss1cg 3 года назад

      @@jsanford2026 - Gram Parsons isn't all that well known, outside of serious musicians, and he never had a lot of hit records, which is a lot of what the US culture is about(material success). And Emmylou has had to deal with overexcited Gram Parsons fans(sometimes called "Grampyres") for decades. He's a successful mainstream writer, so he has a good excuse(LOL).

    c/o New York Times events. To whom it may concern : Listening to this interview which I have just discovered, and not being in the circuit of Country Music, discovering Emmylou Harris and her Bonaparte rescue mission, I would appreciate if someone could indicate an address where I could make a donation, to be on the safe side, not knowing where the donation would land, i would really appreciate that it goes directly to Emmylou Harris...I need to do it on a monthly basis of six months.
    Not being a pro on both the Internet nor the WEb, I could not conclude my finding for a correct address where I could post my donation. Through utube, i have discovered Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins of the era where music was music. Dolly Parton was always my favorite when I heard her sing/compose 'I Will Always love You'.
