You brits dont realize how lucky you are with those door bars, Americans are spoiled and want perfect seams in all their doorways, takes longer and makes it much harder to tighten up the hallway
Please don't put your kicker on the landing rail, even if the spikes are retracted the nap spikes will still mark the paint. Also if you knock it off could easily damage the banister, and the can that's there if that gets knocked off that can cause damage, especially if it punctures. When you put the carpet down be a bit careful if the paint is fresh it will easily mark.

@Oz Osbourn If you can't see its wrong what he's doing, that's your opinion. I was fitting carpets for 40 years and I guess standards have changed.
