    I adore this song. The whole musical Chess is amazing. One Night In Bangkok by Murray Head actually charted. Written by the gentlemen from Abba, I went into it expecting good things. Was not disappointed.

      I am one of the (seemingly) few people in the world that just doesn't get musicals. And most songs that were written for musicals have something that's typically "musical" which I loathe. Musicals to me are like opera, where -as the Dutch comedian Hans Liberg once stated- instead of calling the emergency number, people start to sing when they are being stabbed 🤣. Why is there a song in this part of the story? That's also why the Elton John biopic was a huge disappointment. I expected songs to be part of the film of course, but not as some kind of odd interlude between two parts of the story, totally out of context in my experience.
      Alas, the songs for Chess (at least this one and "One Night In Bangkok") are just brilliant songs and I don't think I have to see the musical to enjoy them 😁.

      Chess start to finish is a gorgeous musical soundtrack! (the original one this one) But I would like to point out that Tim Rice also was on the writing team for this musical along with the guys from Abba

    It starts with Fender Rhodes piano, then Lasse Wellander anounces the precense of his guitar, Elain Paige sets the mood of the song and then it keeps unfolding with Barbara Dicksons voice, Per Lindwalls drums and it all convege to an unearthly state of bliss… Absolutely fantastic!

    BARBARA DICKSON became a well-known face on the British folk circuit of the late 1960s and early 1970s, but changed her career course after meeting Willy Russell. He was at that time a young student running a folk club in Liverpool. He showed Dickson the first draft of what later became the award-winning musical John, Paul, George, Ringo … and Bert and asked her to perform the music. The combination of fine writing, a superb cast of young unknowns (including Antony Sher, Bernard Hill and Trevor Eve) and Dickson's idiosyncratic interpretation of Beatles songs made the show hugely successful.

    Elaine Page did this song with Susan Boyle also. Susan won Britain's Got Talent a few years ago. She's pretty amazing if you haven't heard her. I had to look up the musical. I knew the song but not the play. Turns out it was written by the two male singers from ABBA and is about the Cold War set against a chess match. The song is beautiful and just gives me chills when I hear it.

      After ABBA split up, Bjorn and Benny from ABBA composed music for a musical called Chess. This is from that musical :) So your senses are spot on, it sounds like ABBA for a reason. They also made a musical after Chess that was a huge success in their home country of Sweden, it´s called "Kristina from Duvemala".

    One is 'the wife' and the other is 'the mistress'. Both love the man which is why they make excuses for his behaviour. Never had the expression "he wants his cake and to eat it as well" been so versed in a song. Barbara Dixon was very popular in the 80s. Check out her song 'Caravan'.

    There's no need for Beyonce and/or Mariah Carey do this song (I don't think they could do it justice anyway) when we can access the original at any time. This song was written for a stage play, so it makes sense that someone like Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson, who were both by the early 1980s very experienced stage performers, the right ones to sing this song.

    There is also a version out there featuring Paul O Grady as Lily Savage and Barbar Dickson. When Barbara sings " I could have done things differently. Learned about the man before I began " Paul as Lily interjects "You can say THAT again " lol There is also a Peter Kay version!

    • @stevetournay6103
      @stevetournay6103 Год назад

      Yes, and the Peter Kay one both brilliantly parodies the original video and involves Susan Boyle! It's terrific.

  • @stevetournay6103
    @stevetournay6103 Год назад

    Nice to see this one reacted to. There are numerous covers of it but this is the classic 80s original and no other version tops it. Two of the subsequent covers involved Susan Boyle (of Britain's Got Talent fame), a live performance with Elaine Paige and a hilarious, but really well sung, sendup for Comic Relief with comedian Peter Kay (in drag); details from the original video are parodied but the rendition is great. Now that you've checked out the classic original, take a look at the Boyle/Kay version. Also find Story Of A Heart (Benny Andersson Orchestra featuring Helen Sjoholm) and Gold Can Turn To Sand (Josh Groban, from Kristina)...
