- Following these steps and taking your time can give you professional like results. This video was originally supposed to come out in July but I started painting them in the beginning of August and finished the 9th of August. Same steps could be used on HOW TO SPRAY PAINT A BIKE. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
Honestly, this is one of the best painting tutorials I've seen in a while. Even in painting things that aren't bike related. Good stuff.
You are the first one who gets all the procedures right! Thorough tutorial!
Seriously, this is the best tutorials HANDS down! My bike looks amazing
That was a great HOW TO... video! You kept it SIMPLE, provided important details and explanations, and the Before, During, After footage was on point! I found the stress of importance on proper prep work, justification for the use of enamel based paint, and the duration between coats base coats and clear coats as well as proper sanding techniques to include wet sanding, to be very insightful! I'm actually working on staging my daughter's bike, and I'm currently in the standing process right now. I'm looking forward to the finished product, but I'm also enjoying the during process as well!
You're currently in the standing process right now. .... are you standing there looking at it?
You are the best can spray painter I have ever seen. was googling how to paint a second hand bike for my grandson and this was excellent.
I've watched about 8-10 videos on painting a bike. This one is absolutely the best. Thanks for using a tripod. I hate the people that hold an iPhone with one hand and paint with the other. This video was well edited to make a quality presentation. Thanks.
for a youngster you painted with lots of experience .. outstanding you did a great job ! best lucky to you in the future
Finnaly sommebody who removes the old paint
Free Wheels you don’t have to fully remove it, it’s recommend you at least scuff it however I’ve painted one of my bikes without scuffing it at all and just cleaning it and wiping it down really good before painting and it’s held up fine for quite awhile now.
Why do you think the old paint needs to be removed?
@@msk3905 1: chemical reactions , it will make your new paint bulge and then come off
2: quality , old marks and scratches will be visible on the new paint , plus , the base layer might not stick well to the old clear coat and the new pain will eventually chip off
3: numbers, firstly, if you are serious about cycling you will care about the weight , a paintjob is usually 100 grams , it might not seem like much but it will make you loose a bunch of time over the killometers, a few hills and accelerations. It might cost you a lot of money to loose 100 grams of your bike , but sandpaper is very cheap.
Secondly , aerodinamics , 2 millimiters on the fork and frame of extra surface area is about 20 square centimeters, again a bunch of watts lost
Yoooooooo! That paint job looks absolutely amazing man! It looks like it's the original color
Good video. I am stripping and then painting a bike frame for the first time and this is as clear cut and helpful video as any on the painting process and how to get a good look. I am painting today!
+Bill Jeffries Good Luck!
As soon as he mentioned grease from your hands on the forks, i knew this kid was gonna do a proper job. Very nice work mate!
I wish i could hire you to do my entire bike lol
Thanks man! I'm a perfectionist when it come to working on my bike and painting lol
Im back and i just want to say dayam this video just taught me every question and covered all my problems that ive had very good tutorial im impressed
I've been researching many tutorials because I plan on helping my husband paint his State Bicycle Co. frame and I must say, yours definitely produces the best finished product.
A good tutorial...I will definitely watch it again if I live long enough to get around to painting my frame (customized cruiser). Thanks!
Hey Simon, great tutorial. I followed step by step and had a smashing finish on my steel bicycle. Cheers
Great to hear that! Glad that it helped!
The spray painting part was so relaxing to watch. Thanks for the tips
Thanks for the help. Taking these steps with a metallic purple on my bike. Applying clear coats now. So far so good
I'm doing a restoration, and I took off all the old paint using sandpapers, sanding sponges, and needle files. Why did I do it the hard way? I started the work in my home, during the winter, and a wire brush on an electric drill or a Dremel would've filled the room with paint dust, and a chemical stripper would have choked us out of here. It seemed at first like it was gonna take forever, but I did a little here & there and it was finally done. Now the weather's warm enough to spray the new coats outside. Put the cans in a bucket of warm (not hot!) water for several minutes, and the coat will flow out & dry better. Don't apply too thick a coat on each pass, or the paint below the surface will be isolated from the air & will never fully cure. Use several thin coats, following the instructions on the paint cans to see how long to wait between successive coats. To lightly sand between coats to gradually achieve a level surface, 600 grit paper will usually do the trick. For the final coat, use 600 grit & follow up with a medium rubbing compound and then a mirror glaze, such as Meguiar's #1 medium-cut & then #7 show car glaze/swirl remover. Those can be applied with a wet t-shirt & buffed out with a dry one.
Awesome job! This is one of the best video i've been on how to properly spray paint bike parts
BEST TUTORIAL ON RUclips
Awesome job. You gave me some insight that i prolly wouldn't have thought about. I prolly would have sanded the old paint off. But now i would use the paint remover. Then i prolly wouldn't have used the wet sand methods but now i would. So thanks for making this vid. Top noch.
It's like a professional painted it. Nice work!
This is really fantastic buddy!!!! You have done an astonishing job!!! Very well done! I will follow exactly your instructions.
Ditch the wire brush and use very coarse steel wool for stripping the paint, along with a very stiff brush...take a boar bristle brush and cut off the bristles with scissors leaving half the orig length if u cant find anything stiff...keep cleaning all the gunk off the brush with a scraper or butterknife onto newspaper, and re-wet with stripper...Rubber gloves instead of the leather which will absorb the stripper...some cheap thin ones will melt, so test them WITHOUT HANDS INSIDE!! ..we used thick BLACK ones for stripping ... a cheap heat gun from harbor freight will work also...especially for decals and vinyl lettering, logos.....I used to paint motorcycles.... For some good quality paints and great colors look for custom paint colors used for high end paint jobs on race bikes and cars.... there used to be a few suppliers...."House of Kolor" if still going by that name had a huge selection, and everything u needed too...look in motorcycle magazines for ads....The selections of pearls and metalics is unbelievable.
Great advice! I got a little paint stripper on my hand so I did switch to black rubber gloves.
Awesome video. This really helps out a lot. Thanks bro
Best painting vid ive seen them forks look AWESOME! Keep it up
Zeth ThePsycho Thanks a lot! It actually was my 2nd time painting, I might even paint my frame next year or fall
Cool!
By far the best video I've seen on painting a bike I did the exact same thing you did, except I didn't use a finished clear coat. Keep up the good work brah!
Thanks bro you saved me lots of time👍🏼
Dude ur paint was amazing and thanks for teaching us!
Damn! It turned out amazing! Sick
you done a good job there man, i'll be honest watching the vid at the beginning i wasn't expect much of a result then when you finished it had me stumped lol forks look absolutely prefect......keep up the good work man, you will have to do your frame for sure, maybe a different colour though so it stands out.
+Sgt Skidrow Thanks! I'll be painting my frame in the spring! Still deciding on what color to do, but im leaning towards painting it black.
+SimonOpalkaBMX how about orange or even light green.....you'll need something that goes with black. Don't go full back it'll look boring you want something thats going too stand out so you can show it off.
+Sgt Skidrow I'll probably paint it fluorescent red or trans red, I don't want to spend too much money on a paint job. Plus i'll be getting a new frame in a year.
You are good at this, I hope you make more videos!
damn looks like a pro painted fork!! good job man.
i couldnt get those "orange peals" off but i watched the video, wet sanded my frame on and off for about an hour and a half and it came out really really good. thanks for the video it was extremely helpful.
+Brian Yost Glad it helped!
great job! Came out great, for your own health down the road, wear a mask.
Just wish you'd showed the wet sanding process. Maybe you have another video that does? Nice work!
This was SO thorough.
really amazing job! I feel tempted to do mine now 👍🔥
Good job dear.
Thank you! Going to start my pain job now! painting av vintage bike.
he is a teacher for sure.. great techniques
Good job young man . One question , what product did you use for waxing it after the wet sanding?thanks
Very good job
Good man Youngfella!! I think you're great for your age. Your techniques are just fine and you have thought out the whole process through in detail very well.
Just less of the 'up-talk' okay?!!
But great video, and you deserve a lot of credit. So many guys your age do very little outside of play and entertainment. Here's you showing great initiative and getting all aspects of this technical process just spot on. Good for you!
Good job kid and thanks
Dude you did so good.KEEP ON GOING!
Great job! I really appreciate your help!
Great job! I'm going out and find me a junky bike and restoring it useing ur techniques, thanks
Nice video. ! a compliment for you to encourage you to make more detailed beautiful video.
very well explained.. thank you very much.
Great job ...! From Greece
Good job.
Patience is probably THE MOST IMPORTANT material in painting. I always paint heavy coats to save time, and then wait about only half an hour to put on another heavy coat, and it just ends up terrible sometimes.
isnowyazn True, I applied very light coats every 15 minutes
Hood job bro! It looks like it came straight out of the factory!
When using paint remover you should only apply by brush in one direction only. Brushing back and forth will only kill the action. Secondly you should always use a one step etching primer for the best adhesion on bare metal. Otherwise your paint will eventually flake off the metallic surface.
Very impressive! thank you for the tutorial.
That fork loos AWESOME!!! Great work and video. What is the grit of the sandpaper you use when wet sanding?
Great video
Good job! Good info!
when applyin clear coat do you have to water sand first ...? what can of spray brands do you prefer or is the best ?
What a very informative video...Thank You
nicely done!
Great video! Thank you
good job kid!
Great job buddy!!!
Awsome job. I want to do a black purple diagonal with a precious cross fade in the middle, just need to figure out the best way to do this. Please send me any info you've got
Good job dude.
Thanks!
Good Job.. Very helpful.
Thank you so much bro! Exactly what I wanted to see
No problem! Glad it helped!
it is very nice and early in my opinion
Good video man, well done.
Nice backyard bruh.
can you provide a video on how to wet sand the frame or other parts of the bike with details?.. it would be helpful.. I like the finishing touch you gave the bike.
Excellent idea on the wire brush. 220 grid and 400 grid is there a huge difference? The bigger the number the smoother or is it the opposite?
Bigger number means smoother.
Carlos Diaz an easy way to remember it is how many grains per square cm (pretty sure it's cm?). so 80 grit is 80 grains per sq. cm, you can visibly see the sandgrains, it it was 400 grit youd barely be able to see or count individual grains.
hope that helps :)
Great video! Thank you!!
Hey thank you so much for this video! helped alot and im planning on trying this method out! :)
Hey mate excellent finish. What sand paper grit did you use?
So wet sand the clear coat anyway orange peel or not... right?
I have never seen anyone spray with their thumb...
Marco Robles you have more control with each spray
Try it, its way better! :)
You haven't painted much.
You can spray way longer with the thumb other fingers hurts way faster.
raul you're ignorant
I do it
Great video, quick question though. Does the wet sanding break through the clear coat? I plan on painting my entire road bike and will be placing decals under the clear coat and want to make sure that this wont ruin them. Thanks in advance man.
that turned out really nice! I want to repaint my bike, and this mite be expensive but will be nice if you do it this way and take your time. great job. tell me where you bought ur paint
yeah, it was very helpful! i was planning on spray painting my old handle bar and seat post but now that i see how much time you need to spend on it to get it to look perfectly, i think i'm just gonna buy new parts ...
I'm in the process of sanding forks n a frame for my nephew...I wish I woulda watched ur video sooner...I shoulda used stripper...either way I'm going to refer to your video the rest of the process...your forks looked fkn awesome n want this bike to look the same caliber.
DUDE. IT IZ WONDERFULL! Plz tell me the brands! ANd plz tell me how the last two process works.
For wet sanding: Make sure you have a good coat of clear, I would reccomend 4 coats. Once the paint cures (wait 2-3 days) get 1000 or 1500 grid sandpaper and a bucket of water. Its important to wrap the sandpaper around a sanding block so you get a smooth finish. Now just sand the frame, ensuring surface is lubricated. It's IMPORTANT that you do not press super hard or sand too much or else you will sand the clear coat off. Once in a while wipe the surface down and you will see how smooth it is. To not cut through the clearcoat I would reccomend starting off with 1500 if your afraid to cut through the clearcoat, however it will take longer. Once finished, just get some compund polish and rub it on the frame.
Great job! Super impressed and definitely following your instructions. I do have a question tho, at the end when you wet sand and apply the wax, doesnt the wax come off over time? I.e. theres a level of maintenance involved isnt there? Thanks again for a great tutorial.
Wow! I'm working on taking apart and then painting my bike! Come do mine! J/k! Great vid!
I need ideas for a cheap DIY device that can hold both the frame and the fork suspended in the air. thanks
What motion did you do while wet sanding?. And is your paper like soaked or just damp. Like do I shake it off after I dip it in water?. And also, haha, do you wipe it off after wet sanding before wax?.
Also awesome job in the video. Props all the way 👌
Nice work, thx for this
can you do a video on cleaning your bike chain and doing Maintenance on it
I HAVE A QUESTION IS THE SAND PEPPER SUPPOSE TO LEAVE SCRATCHES ON THE FORKS?? bc it did to my forks then i stop sanding my forks should i not sand my forks??
If I'm poor and lazy, what's the best way to get a nice clean looking coat if I just want to spray on top of the existing paint? I have sand paper and a can of cheap spray paint. I've done this before, without sanding, and got really bad orange peel texture. I may have also been spraying a lot closer, and not in short bursts but really going at it, and only did one coat.
How long would it take just spray painting it black with no clear coat or anything?
Hello I am in the UK what is the strongest and best paint remover for bike frames as I don't want it to corrode my frames I have two bikes one a racing mtb and one a hybrid I believe ones diamondback no longer made by them and one is Raleigh which I think is mass produced still
Nice!
Can you use a rust paint instead of paint and a clear coat and what's the best way to remove spots with lots of piled up paint
Excellent video, thank you.
Good info man
Looks like factory painted
Thanks you!
Simon Opalka can you please show the process of wet and dry sanding. it would alot thx
WRX 7 yhhh plz
