Yes, please do spend more time in DCS! And pressure MSFS for Quadviews. There is no modern VR sim that should be foregoing quadviews, it's truly the enabler of high end VR. I am blown away by the performance possible thanks to eye tracking in DCS world, perhaps this means even the Pimax Crystal SUPER will be a viable option for DCS World users?
FYI if you have not been following: DCS is due for a VR Render Graph overall which is rumored to boost FPS in VR by around 50%, and it may be out later this year if not delayed. Moreover, the RTX 5090 is rumored to be up to 70% more powerful. Finally, DCS is also switching to Vulkan API sometime in the next 12 months or so (but ED has stated it may only be a 10-15% performance boost. The largest VR performance boost will likely be found via the VR Render Graph overall, which changes the DCS World render pipeline).
Point is, 3800x3800 55 PPD Eye Tracked headsets *might* be completely playable in DCS World at high graphics and locked 72fps within 4-12 months, according to your early results with the XR4??
I would love to see you do some more videos in DCS with XR4, but also Crystal Light vs Crystal w/Eye Tracking, to really explore the difference quadviews can make. Try low level rain flight at high sun/shadow angle time of day (golden hours) over dense cities in Syria, PNG, and Marianas. Try launching from super carrier deck. It's the low level stuff with lots of shadows or refreaction from clouds, lots of geometry from close up trees and buildings, that really tax the GPU and will really show what impact quadviews has.
As one final side note, for many of us actually playing DCS "the worst case is the best case". Meaning, we aren't just doing a free flight. A mission may launch over a rainy, busy, urban area, then go to high flight, then land on a super carrier deck. But we can't change graphics settings mid flight. So we have to dial our graphics settings in VR for the worst case scenario. Thus seeing how these headsets and GPUs perform in those highly demanding areas of DCS is the real litmus test. But of course, this carries over as an understanding of what we would expect in MSFS 2024 if they ever implement quadviews: it would tell us how much and to what extent Quadviews can really scale. Could it boost FPS in MSFS over a city by 30-40 FPS? MAYBE. And at that point, as a VR community we have to put pressure on Microsoft and headset makers to get Eye Tracking into all of these high resolution headsets and quadviews into these demanding sim games. It will accelerate the future not only of the VR experience, but of general VR market adoption.
    (Sorry for the novel) :D

    • @DS52116
      @DS52116 20 дней назад +3

@@wittyname-sy5je Before you get too excited, most developers already have their VR Render Graph pipeline constructed properly. The ELI5 version is something like you render what is common to both frames, then the difference for one eye VS the other.
But DCS had been doing the ENTIRETY of both frames independently. This is what has made its VR performance so far behind the likes of IL2 or Autombolista 2 in VR. When they fix that, it will simply bring their rendering pipeline in VR up to snuff with others. The reason DCS performance in XR4 or Pimax Crystal has caught up, or still wins out in DCS now, is simply because Quadviews is just that good (and because DCS has a good DLSS implementation). Once they get their VR render graph pipeline sorted out, it will really shine.
On the other hand, other devs (like IL2, Automobilista 2) already have the render graph sorted, but could really boost performance by adding DLSS & Quadviews. Finally, there is MSFS, who has DLSS and I believe the render graph in order. But it is such an insanely demanding game it still melts many flat screen gamers rigs. It really, really, really would benefit from Quadviews! But unless I am mistaken I believe Asobo already has proper VR Render Graph.
TL;DR VR Render Graph improvement is more of a "fix" to DCS's very ancient engine and implementation, and not something to look forward to in many other titles, AFAIK.

35 ppd to 55 ppd is a 2.5x higher pixel per area. That's a bigger leap than going from a 1440p display to a 4k display (only 2.3x) of the same physical size. That's a crazy step increase.

Indeed. I gave a top end rig and can get 72 FPs as a consistent rate in DCS. All my VR settings are high and graphics sliders are over to the right, mainly. Open XR, Pimax XR and quad foveated rending set to 120% with peripheral at 16%. That gives me a smooth 72 FPS. With a top end PC. Up the pixel count 2.3 times. Can’t see me getting the most out of that sort of res with my current PC TBH. Although it must look stunning. 😮

What's sad is that there is very little business incentive to add quad view support to other titles. Maybe 0.5% of all VR headsets support eye tracking. And Eagle dynamics added quad view support for professional use cases. So we will continue to cry for DFR quad view support and those cries will likely continue to fall on deaf ears.

@@ChrisM541 Just because a lens type exists doesn't mean they are just "available"... A lot of engineering goes into making an optical stack that works well for a specific VR integration and the lens designs change depending on the dimensions of the panel used. These panels weren't available in quantity to ANYONE this time last year. Varjo's entire business up until they made the Aero was enterprise only; so no, they aren't "trying their luck", enterprise is what keeps their lights on. Their previous Flagship (XR-3) Started at $6,495 + a MANDATORY $1,495 yearly subscription, so not only did they blow it out of the water, but also cut the price in half and eliminated the subscription.
Nothing he is presenting is disingenuous to the capabilities of the device. It isn't being featured as a gaming headset it is being featured as a SIMULATION headset which in case you have forgotten, is on an entirely different plane of possible costs. Some simulators cost millions so for installations like that, $4k isn't even a rounding error.
The cost for Varjo to buy the displays is likely around $1500 per headset so by the time you add in all of the R&D cost, manufacturing, logistics, and ongoing support it is actually an excellent value compared to what was available in that space before.
As for your point on devices for the "common man" They did make the Aero for $1k which was about as cheaply as they could sell it without losing money. Facebook (Meta) loses money on every headset they sell, always have. Unlike Facebook, Varjo can't afford to lose $15b keep themselves afloat by robbing from their other ventures, so they have to maintain a profitable business like every other non-Fortune 50 company in the sector.
To anyone reading this maybe don't take advice from a guy who conflates "HDM" with "HMD" twice in a row. I have no idea what a "head display mounted" is but "head mounted displays" on the other hand - do exist. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

The real issue though is that without *quadviews* support specifically, eye tracking will only boost performance a little bit. With quadviews, the gains are much better. All good if you are a DCS only player, but we need quadviews in MSFS 2024, sim racing titles, etc. Put pressure on simulation developers to implement quadviews support... it looks like the future of VR could be here within 12 months, with quadviews + RTX 5090 + Eye tracked headsets. Exciting stuff. I am blown away by the concept that quadviews could make a 55PD headset playable within a year, I thought that even with eye tracking, playable FPS at this PDD would be 5 years away for anything heavyweight like DCS/MSFS... but perhaps not. Thank you so much for this! Please, please, please include the DCS settings you were using for this in a future video, and the render resolution would be great to know as well.
I am absolutely floored that you're getting a solid 45 fps in DCS at the full resolution of that headset. I would have never guessed that was possible on a 4090. Wow. Is the eye box (the high quality foveated rendering portion) rather small with that or does it cover a decent part of the screen?
Now I am even more excited about the Crystal Super. I really hope Pimax doesn't muck it up. I'm still probably going to upgrade to a 5090 when that comes out though. But oh man that is wild.

If you're referring to the one Pimax is releasing, no. That one's only for the Crystal. Also they're relying on DFR and dynamic foveated transport (similar to DFR but adding (more) lossy compression to the video stream of the peripheral area) to achieve 90hz at the Crystal's resolution. The XR-4 has 73.33% more pixels in its display panels than the Crystal so it's not really feasible. Maybe with a second generation WiGig (802.11ay) module but I haven't heard of anybody developing one of those yet.

I can get super clarity with Pimax XR and quad foveated rendering at 120% of the Crystal native res. With my FPS set to 72 in the crystal my FPS traces are pretty much flat lining with odd spike creeping in. I’ll stick with that for the foreseeable future.
Varjo haven’t covered themselves in glory, recently. That may put a lot of people off.

So which XR-4 is this? Varjo on their website advertise the $4k unit only capable of 33PPD and you have to buy the $10k focal edition to get 51PPD!

That's incorrect. The standard XR-4 is capable of 55PPD with DFR apps. The 10k version has the clever focal tech, hence the name.

@@VRFlightSimGuy Ok I miss read, the 33 vs 51 PPD difference is with the pass through performance. Wow, guess this is my new toy to save for.
