    To avoid the o-rings falling off the standoffs, you can put them on the screws, put the screws through the pcb, more o-rings, and the line it up.

  • @Daniel-ii1qs
    @Daniel-ii1qs 2 года назад +18

    polyfill is an especially nice mod over foam on gasket-mounted or other flexy keyboards because it compresses way more than most foam. I use it in my Q1 and it retains almost identical flex as no foam has, but without the ping of having no foam.

  • @HenriNero
    @HenriNero 2 года назад +16

    For my keyboard, I put a couple layers of tape under the pcb, and a few layers of EVA foam in the case, and just one between the plate and pcb. Sounds really good for a cheap gamer keyboard!
    And also lubed switches and stabs, and a xda keycap set that's a bit thicker than the original set.

  • @rcfp2006
    @rcfp2006 2 года назад +43

    Instead of Polyfill, use polyester fleece from a sewing shop. Easier to work with and you can layer it to the desired thickness.

    Thank you very much for compiling all these mods into one video like this. It was super entertaining, and gave me more insight in the actual sound changes that the mods might give myself. I just put together my first custom keeb using the Tecware Phantom 87 and just swapping the switches to the Akko Jelly Starfishes (p.s. the horror stories of using those included metal switch pullers were true...RIP many Gateron Reds :( lol). Suprisingly, the only mod it could see most benefit from would be the tape mod, which will be safe in it seeing how it isn't wireless. MAYBE the band-aid mod would do something too, but overall...this budget board is almost too solid when you pair it with decent switches.

    I think that for filling the caps with silicone you could use the same syringe approach as the stab lube, but with a 40-50mL syringe (to avoid wasting time refilling) and a 14 gauge needle! seems promising!

    I have a suggestion for anyone looking for a deeper sounding switch in a budget, but it's a frankenswitch, where I took the stem of an Akko Silver and used a lubed housing and lubed spring from an Akko Ocean Blue. This made for a nice deep linear switch, and the stem of the Silver didn't need lube as it made no difference. It would probably also be fine with stock blue housings but I already had them lubed from a previous build. The silvers on their own are also good for a budget thocc with no mods, since lubing made a minimal difference for the few switches I lubed on it

    Much respect to you. The willingness to take things apart is one of the most beneficial traits a person can possess. Over the course of a lifetime it will save you great sums of money and vastly improve your understanding of how and why things work like they do. One word of caution- anything with large capacitors (old TVs, CRT monitors, microwaves, AC units ect) read up on how to safely discharge the capacitors before you open things up. A capacitor can sometimes store enough of a charge to end a life so just do a bit of research so you know how to identify what capacitors look like and how to make them safe to work with. It's not a hard or complex process, just an important one. Keep up the great work!

    Just watching gave me the idea of using a seringe for the silicon as well, that way you get a nice control and application. I imagine the cap full would not bottom out all the way as it would make contact with the switch, but just a nice layer at the top could really be nice, especially for keys like the spacebar that have lots of open space not over any switch area.
    Bonus use a pretty clear silicone and perhaps the RGB would still work well on shine thru caps. Also could try epoxy resin.

    Just did mod # 6 but with out silicon. I used Hot Glue. It is easier to control and if you get to much you can use the tip of the hot glue gun to heat it up again and remove some. Buying more expensive keycaps is probably better. But, doing this will make cheap keycaps sound much better. The RGB even shines through the hotglue. So, the letter on my cheap keycaps still light up.

    You should consider the silicone keycap mod again but maybe you could use something like a "soft" glue......or that kids glue?

    Ever thought about Alu-Butyl? It is used for sound damping in car doors ^^

    Turkey basters are super cheap and great for applying silicone to small spaces. Otherwise, Home Depot, Lowes, or whatever hardware store is in your area should carry silicon and latex caulk in a squeeze tube which both also would be great for this mod!

    If you do a little double sided tape you can get the poly fill to stick and stay where you put it. Mostly.
