I'm new to keyboard modding and am doing my obligatory youtube rabbithole binge. This was the most insanely entertaining video of the three million I've watched in the last 4 days. HILARIOUS. Challenge idea: you each buy one set/copy of the parts you need to mod a keyboard (e.g. switches, caps, lube, tools, tape or some general category for case mods, etc.). They all go into a pool, and you each randomly draw one from each category and have to build with what you draw.
I love how chaotic budget modding can get. Putting Elmers glue in keycaps, throwing things in a bag of oil, emptying a vending machine into the base, just taping stabs and praying. It's great
Something I would love to see is a everyone mods the same cheap keyboard with unlimited budget, but you have to use all of the original parts. Modify the plate, the case, keycaps, the switches even(I turned some Outemu blues into very scratchy linears that actuate on bottom-out, but you guys can probably do better).
Nice. I am doing something similar to my board right now. I have a keycool kc84 (that I bought in 2018 or something). I am changing the switches to gateron yellow cream pros and modding everything else. Going to put neoprene in the case and probably going to put some electrical tape on the pcb. For some reason I feel like electrical tape would sound better than blue but I am not an expert. I just feel that way for some reason idk. I think I like the look better lol…
I can understand and respect the caution for causing fires with battery keyboards, but foam pressing against Li-Ion batteries doesn't cause them to combust. In fact, many mid-tier keyboards with batteries come with a thin layer of foam in them, laying over the battery. This would only happen if the battery was built faulty or you somehow puncture the battery. The lithium reacts with water in the air which causes it to combust.
I'd love some kind of challenge where everyone upgrades a mainstream gaming keyboard (Razer, Corsair, Redragon etc) randomized -and upgrade that's capped on their base price or something lol- Edit: Replies suggested better limitations! A limitation of 100$ *including* the keyboard seems better; that way the brand and price of the keyboard one choose will heavily affect the remain of modding cost (i.e. Do you buy a $50 RedDragon and spend $50 upgrading it? Or a $80 Huntsman Mini and spend $20 upgrading it?; as what Aaron Morrow suggested)
This video got me into custom keyboards, a hobby which I absolutely fell in love with. Before this masterpiece I didn't even know it was possible to build your own keyboard! I can't even remember how many times I watched this. Thanks Betty & other keyboard RUclipsrs! Keep up the good work!
Used parts only challenge. Could limit bundling and require individual purchases. Shipping would be a pain but I think it would be cool to show what could be done reusing parts of other projects.
Challenge idea: Build a budget split keyboard. I feel like split keyboards would really introduce different layouts and creation factors that would make the video really interesting. Maybe everyone gets a different type of split keyboard to build, or they have to mix and match the left and right sides of different pcb sets.
Everyone's so focused on the sound and look of these keebs, but I've never seen anyone try to make literally "the most productive keyboard" ever. Trying to speed run a bunch of unfamiliar tasks (assuming everyone uses the same software) would be a hilarious and fantastic video!
I just decided to take the plunge this week and have been a bit surprised at how little discussion I've seen on things like what switches work best for which keys and how most everyone I work with who codes for a living all type on cheap oem keyboards.
if you want to use budget foam and stuff, maybe try using dish sponge? I used it on my boards and it makes it sound way less hollow. Either way, amazing video, I think it sounds pretty good for the budget!
As a owner of a full on custom keyboard i say the best at low budget builds will be Lewis. I really like his low budget builds but for the higher budget ones you and Hippy are the best at creating a master piece.
that spacebar was ticking really bad on the left side though that was the only thing that bothered about this build, other than that this was a super legit budget build, Betty! Also, if Lewis had just lubed his stabs and switches, I really feel like he would have probably gotten at least second place
Very cool colab/group challenge, well done bringing everyone in. And it just goes to show more money not always wins everything. Also its always great to see different approaches on the same subject. Well done. Would like to see a challenge where there is a common goal like: make most thocky, or most silent, or most clickies, or most bouncy typing, or like keybored to do a plate mount conversion, and as usual modding budget under 80usd
I love her creativity she always figures out how to make good keyboards and upgrades on keyboards even with lower amounts of money in these challenges I love these videos in general like wow !! Also imagine she hearts this comment😆
I think it'd be quite a challenge for y'all if you tried to build a good iso-layout keyboard with norde extension keycaps. Those are so hard to find. I started to get into this world and am not able to find proper pbt keycaps with iso-de or norde.
I would love a keyboard challenge where you would do mods that no one has ever done something new it would be nice to see and thanks you for reading this comment.
It’s funny you guys are all trying to make it sound better and a sharper click but Ive always tried to find the quietest keyboard on the market. I have an issue with the clicking noises lol
I would love to have a video where the same group of people have to build a full gaming setup (PC, Monitor, Mouse, Headset, Keyboard, and Mousemat) and the price ranges from $400 to $2500. Love the content so thx, this video made my day.
Love to see a challenge where who can make the best sounding keyboard with just a bottle of silicone rubber. I'd also love to see a challenge on what's the best type of tape to use on a keyboard PCB to get that sweet thock sound. There are heaps of different tapes out there! Anything goes!
Interesting challenge and interesting techniques Jolly good show @Switch and Click and the rest of the guys who participated. Also, is it just me or does Betty sound a bit fatigued throughout the video? Anyhow, great job Betty and the rest of the guys 🙂
Fun fact for you, with tiny flathead screw drivers you can open up switches by sticking up the clips on the side to which i did before owning a switch opener its simple and effective.
So I am very new to this but what I really want is probably what everyone wants. A video on a cheap keyboard that is functional but hot swappable then you take me through each thing I can do to make it amazing. So lube, silicon the bottom, explain what the heck is going on with the limited availability of switches. So the whole video is an actual realistic project I can do, you know? A lot of the videos feel inaccessible when you use keycaps or switches you already had. It's very entertaining. Not every video is going to be a project I can follow. It's totally cool but I could use something grounded. So, switches, I wanted neapolitans but I cant find them. I dont get that. So I found that TTC Gold Pinks were maybe similar and bought a butt load of those but nothing to put them in yet. But there is a video I havent seen done but could be interested to see more of, with those specific switches. It's a sound test with just different keycaps. I didnt know that was a thing. Now Im checking out chassis. Looking at what is apparently called an Alice setup. Just ergo style. So much lingo. Checking out Keyboreds video on this glue...
Here in the Philippines I upgraded my redragon lakshimi keyboard with 14$.. that includes EVA and PE FOAM, Masking Tape, and 70 pieces of KTT Kang Whites V4.
