I prefer the Remo Powersonic now that I have heard your recording of the two heads. I always used the Evans Emad on my previous kits but for my current recording kit I'd go with the Powersonic. Thanks so much for posting this video and taking the time to provide not only the comparison of these two drum head products, but also for using an internal and an external mic. I was looking at product descriptions for these two exact heads, so the video answered all my questions. These drum heads are expensive and there are so many product options out there from the main manufactures, it makes it difficult to know which one to go with.
when you've spent so much money on kick drums you can't afford socks your size. been there
Julius Palavinskas haha best comment ever!!!!!!
Okay I’ve got both heads, the dampening materials and the tuning key... but I’m still missing- oh look my 5 year old daughters socks!
I think you tuned the Emad higher.
The pitch is actually much lower.. just had more overtones
@TearsOfDecember Band 😂😂👍🏼🤦🏼♂️ that’s hilarious!! 😅 I mean.. you are kidding right..? Regardless of what brand let alone what type of drumhead you use, the tuning will dictate the majority of the character.
@TearsOfDecember Band I myself am a professional musician, session drummer and audio engineer of 17+ years.
For direct comparison with dampening click 1:37 then 3:13 and for non dampening click 0:47 and then 2:44. IMO the Remo wins hands down surprisingly.. That Emad sounds wayyyy too boingy.
motodrummer great comment!!!!!! very helpfull. thanks
i have to agree.... perharps lowering the tune on the evans they sound more close, but as seen, remo wins
motodrummer / awesome that you put time markerZ in your comment. Thanks. It really helps me to "A-B" them both.
Thanks for the comparison, it's great to have this stuff on here... However it's obvious the Evans head was tuned higher. I have an emad 2 on my kick and it sounds much more like the Remo in this video
Remo hands down! Without muffling.. I’m switching!!
0:48 Powersonic vibrating - both mics
1:37 Powersonic dampened - both mics
2:41 EMAD vibrating - both mics
3:13 EMAD dampened - both mics
I have Evans emad 2 for just two weeks so far..all i can say, excellent drumheads!!
I haven't tried to bigger rings yet. What one do you like more?
Hey, thanks for uploading.
I guess it depends on people's preference. With the Remo Powersonic, I found the sound to be entirely muted while the Evans EMAD sounded more like a concert-style bass drum. To each their own.
Please before you go and purchase a power sonic head heed my warning. After playing Evans heads for a while I ventured out and wanted to try something different. I had never found a snare head that Evans made that I liked so I tried a Remo Black X and I haven't used a different snare head since. After that I looked into the power sonic, all I played before was a super kick II and then switched to the emad 2, which I still play to this day. It was when they first came out and due to the similarities with the emad, I bought one (power sonic). I tuned it every which way, put it on 2 different bass drums, played it in different rooms, used different beaters, Tried every combo with and w/o the dampening thing. It is the deadest head on the market. It has no attack, tone, punch, anything. So I took it back and got another emad 2. Long story short I wish I had read the reviews before I bought it, it would have saved me a lot of time and effort. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Dude! Dude! Set the beater closer to the centre!!!
That would make a big difference.
No, you don't play any drum at the center.
Myth
no.. center position will give you less low end and more useless rebound.
It's a 20" Bass Drum... you need a certain leverage of the beater. If you place it at the center of the bass drum you'll need to kick the hell ouf of yourself to play at higher dynamics.
Remo Powersonic - Bass Drum,
Remo Pinstripe - Toms,
Remo Controlled sound black dot clear - Snare drum!!!! - This is very good!!!
I don't like Evans drumheads.
Roman Mauser because you know Evans heads are better and I had a Emad I didn’t like it but the Eq3 and eq4 are pretty awesome
This is a mazing!
I prefer remo black x to snare. It's black suede version of emperor x
Why not coated Cs black dot
Emil K. Can you tell me the difference? I am looking for new heads (Batter/Reso), and was almost ready to purchase the EMP-X, until I read your comment. I like a heavy ‘SNAP’ to my Snare. Thanks. BTW-Nice name! 😉
Would have been nice to do the Superkick II with them.
I'll need to give the Remo Powersonic a try. I like that flat thud with the high end attack, which is how I prefer to tune my kick drum... no overtones, just a crispy high end attack with a deep articulated punch.
If Remo makes the Powersonic 16" size I'll buy it. My kick drum is a 16" former floor tom converted into a kick drum. I play in a garage-rock band and most of our songs are fast old-school 60s punk, but I inject a modern Metallic kick-drum sound into our music, borderlining Thrash and hardcore punk for our faster songs.
Remo powersonic "The Best of the Best", nice sound!!
Both sound quite good but I prefer the remo head - has a fuller sound to it.
This is a double ply vs single...double will always win
I don't wholly agree with that. It depends on the drum, the resonant head and the muffling used. Double ply can sometimes completely kill the sound of the drum
@@tomdrums06 they are both double ply...
Both tuned way high man !
Remo is better w/o muffling, Evans is better w/ muffling
I preferred the Remo. Thx for posting!
powersonic wins
The EMAD is a single ply head. EMAD2 is the two ply version. The powersonic is two ply and quite a bit thicker, so you can’t really compare it to the Single ply EMAD. I’d go with the EMAD if I was playing jazz. Powersonic for really everything else.
Im happy my emad doesnt sound like this ^^
Remo ❤❤❤
I think figuring out the relationship between the tuning of the batter and resonant heads is going to affect the sound a lot more than which head you use. Neither of them sound great in this video and they are both really good heads with more potential than shown here. Batter head seems much too tight but I guess everyone likes it different.
it would really help both if you had the beater set closer to the center... Just sayin...
+Gausgovy ☆CS:GO☆ I'm happy with the beater height and the way the pedal feels. I've had no issues sound wise having the beater off center myself. Thanks for watching and your feedback.
+Gausgovy Directly centre can actually give you a choked sound. A drum will always resonate and sing best if the striking zone is just slightly off centre.
Adam Correia But hitting off center gives the ring more overtones, and kick drums are meant to sound beefy and fat, not musical (depending on the style, but I would never use either of these heads for a style that would need a long musical tone)
Gausgovy is actually correct - I am a sond engineer by trade, and this is my own finding also.
Depends what you're looking for really!
Thanks, JW
I set the beater just a few cm off center and I typically place a beater pad in the direct center so I know where center is :)
Definitely Remo
It would be nice at the end if we got both heads back to back...
With dampening, the remo sounded good.
Long story: I have played both an Emad and Powersonic. Emad is better. I use an 18” kick. I had 2 bad experiences with the Power Sonic’s quality I put one on my kick hit it once and it cracked. Brought it back and exchanged for another one and the same thing happened. One hit with my kick pedal destroyed the head. I am what I would consider to be a normal to light player so I was shocked. I also bought these heads several years after I had experimented with other heads and I just did not care for the sound. I give you my word that I did not abuse the Remos in any way, they were just shit quality. Emads are fantastic. They are superior in sound and durability.
looks like where the beater hits the head is too high. Try bringing the beater bar down lower so that it is directly in the middle of the head and see if you get a fatter sound!
George Koretski he is using a 20" kick drum
George Koretski
also, fun fact. the greatest tone and most pouch are actually found just slightly off center. it's much more apparent on timpanis, since they're so large, but bass drums are big enough that it applies as well.
It depends on the sound you want. Marching snares and concert snare will play mostly dead center, unless going towards the rim for effect. Marching tenors will play towards the rim for a timbale like sound(as will timbales). But marching bass drums and concert bass drums will hit dead center. Yes timpani are played off center, in a similar reason to timbales, to get that ringy tone.
Shouldnt the kick beater be more centered on the skin? Would be better. Guess it is small for a kick.
Love the video! Would you say this head is muffled enough without any pillows?...B/c I hate adding pillows into it
For the Powersonic of course
There was a small amount of muffling but ive since used it without any muffling except the head itself and it sounds great!
Hi Ryan! Thanks for the test. What external mic did you use?
Thanks for watching. External mic was se electronics x1D
Thanks.
Remo Wins!!!!
It is a common mistake, but the correct term is damping, not dampening. Dampening refers to moisture. Damping refers to vibration.
Nobody likes a smartass
It also depends on the materials that are made by drum set companies themselves for me it's pearl master's kits in Birch or maple or maple mehogandy mixed or Birch maple mixed for me powerfull Sonic has it
The Remo sounds amazing because it appears brand new. The Evans sounds like garbage because it appears to have have been used awhile(notice the glue left behind from having a patch) and tuned higher.
Yeah, you shouldn't really take a head off, and put it back on. You can, but it's not recommended. Once you take it off, it will never sound right again.
The emad is is a one ply head which is why it sounds more open. The power sonic is two ply and quite a bit thicker.
That EMAD sounds gross, anyone else think so?
No
I agree EMAD sounds weird. Id rather get Powerstroke or power-sonic from remo instead. I actually own an EMAD on my current set it sounds pretty good. But id rather get powerstroke pro or powerstroke P3
He has em tuned differently, the versatility of the head is unparalleled, he left the PS3 wide open while using the muffling ring on the emad, and he used an EMAD1 ply instead of the EMAD2 (which I prefer and gives way deeper tone, fundamental, and less sustain even when left wiflde open. To each their own! Happy drumming!
A pele remo power sonic, pra quem gosta de som encorpado e grave aveludado é a pele!!! É só colocar no bumbo e afinar, nem precisa amaciar, ela já fica TOP DE CARA!!!. É muito boa.
Powersonic hands down.
Even the high tune of the Emad , Emad sound way better. Emad for me is one of the best head.
The emad sounds bad because you tuned it higher, I tune it lower and when I mic it sounds better.
It might just be my ears, but something didn't seem to agree on the resonate side with the Emad. it just sounded papery and thin. Both heads sounded great, which kind of surprised me about the Remo as I haven't got a good sounding Remo head in years...
click 1:37 then 3:13 and for non dampening click 0:47 and then 2:44
The plastic ring dries out and cracks then it creates an annoying buzz. If you cut it to fix then the foam ring pops out. This has happened the past 3 heads for me so no more. Go Aquarian Super Kick series or REMO PS 3.
Remo Powersonic wins by a mile
I bought the powersonic... it's on.. but the emad its far more better
Don't think the crowd cares when your playing LIVE, what drumhead you choose!!! Sorry folks, had to be said.
You were burying the beater w/ the Remo. Do over ;)
he plays it without burying it the first time around....
Essa pele é muito boa! Mas possui um detalhe: ela só fica 10 depois de amaciada. É preciso ter um pouco de paciência com ela, mas depois fica TOP!!!. ( ESTOU FALANDO DA PELE EVANS EMAD ).
Evans Emad may only work with certain kits depending on how the kit is made Remo powerfull Sonic and powerfull stroke head's work on certain Kit's as well depending on how any drumset is made of and to put them both in to prespective quality is asentual you get what you pay for
REEEMOOOO
I totally respect what this guy is trying to do. I myself use the EMAD setup. Mine sounds WAY better than that. This comparison had to many incompatible factors.
better luck next time.
How do you get such a good sound from the mic??
Well firstly, thanks for the kind words! The sound comes mainly from the tuning/muffling, and with decent but affordable mics. I tried to capture the attack with the e602 and the warmth with the x1 and blend the two together.
how is the close mic so focused like it captures nothing but the drum in comparison to the external which captures more room whenever i mic close it sounds like the external even in a small room
The e602 is only 4 inches from the batter head, pointed directly at the beater to get most attack. If i only had 1 mic I would place it just outside the porthole if you have one.
ill experiment with that thank you :D
Aquarian SuperKick II for me. Also Mike choice for me not working...
Remo powerfull Sonic and powerfull stroke takes the win
Right now evans & remo coming like nike & adidas
I'll stick with remo
I like em. I just don't like the price.
Remo the king
Emad 4 Ever
I didn’t like it in my opinion.
Remo the best !
The EMAD sounds plasticy. I have it and it was fine, now that I heard Remo I want it
That internal mic is horrible! Just the external mic sound much better.
Remo beats easily
Nice socks!!!
Powersonic win
Em ad smokes the other
john mclaughlin only if your deaf and have shit taste in sound
Emad wins
Your kick does not hit the center of the skin so the sound is not good, center the pedal than you can see the difference.
remo wins here
remo
Remo
Evans(made by d'addarrio, who "Specialize's" in making Guitar Strings?, NOT Drumheads like REMO (& Remo Belli is a Drummer! Get the connection? Buy Remo, they are a Trustworthy Drumhead Manufactuer. I've play Remo 24+ yrs & wouldn't think of disgracing my Pearls with an Evans head. 1+1=2, NEXT!? Get wit it fellow drummers, we all have ears, find this out for yourself, experience is key( even if ya do get fooled into buying an Evans head); keep ur receipt, u can return it & return it u will; for a Remo! JMO Thanx 4 posting👍 🥁🎸🎤🎵☠
Remo is better then Evans
My god could you kick any slower...
+John Keese The guy's offering the drumming community a comparison. He's not trying to show off.
Duh, I get that. So, if its helpful to you then good. But i'd like to hear what it sounds like when you actually KICK the thing!
I'd like to close mic your head from both sides WHEN I KICK IT for being an obstinate idiot too.... but then we don't always what we like do we??
I prefer the Evans Emad
Gee I think I've never ever heard as bad kick drum sound. Sorry I'm sure that you kick drum sounds fine with just regular Evans or similar skins
This is such a bs test...try doing it again and keep it without dampening
Both had dampening on
Any money he’s ginger
Sorry to disappoint.
The most unfair comparison I've ever seen.
Jesus tune your drums
nice socks
Remo Powersock
Remo wins kkkkkk
Bass drum too small. On this particular small drum the Remo wins.
This vid seems misleading & biased✌🏾
Nice socks!!!
Only the best!
