    Good afternoon, excellent video, I really appreciate you taking the time and trouble to do it, I would really appreciate it if you could help me with the following concern, at this moment I use a remo powerstroke 4 ttransparent head for my 22-diameter by 20-deep bass drum And no matter how much I listen to the video, I practically can't find a difference with the transparent powerstroke 3, I would really appreciate it if you could tell me what the differences are in terms of sound (Tone, bass, sustain and volume) and how they feel when playing them, I play genres like pop, rock, latin among other genres... and the idea is to know if it would be worth the change or not...

    Roy thanks for doing this. I know how time consuming it was. It must have been a real labor of love.
    I was listening to this on my phone so keep that in mind. I've always used remo ps3 coated for my bass, it seems to work best for both live and a studio/home/practice environment. I have tried the ps 4 at home and for certain cuts it works well.
    I haven't used aquarians before but I really want to give them a try. The superkick ii, clear or coated seem promising. I'd really need to use and work with them for a month to get a feel for how they fit.
    I've used evans g1 and g2 for toms but they don't really appeal to me for bass.
    It's hard because I need to work with a head for a few weeks, playing with the tuning for studio and live before I can decide. It's all very time consuming and that's before you add mics to the equation. Yessh!
    The time it takes to decide on drum equipment and lugging them all around makes you wish you played the flute.
    Thanks again.

    Great video! For studio, the Remo Powerstroke 3 Coated will be great, but an impact patch will extend the durability more. If I’m doing a hard rock and metal band gig, (Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, AC/DC), the Remo Pinstripe or Evans EMAD Heavyweight will be perfect. If I’m doing a jazz band gig (Nat King Cole), then maybe the Ambassador Coated or Fiberskyn Ambassador. If it’s a punk rock gig (Green Day, The Ramones), the Remo Powerstroke 4 or Evans EMAD 2 will be great for that. If I’m doing a classic rock gig, (Led Zeppelin, Boston, Queen, Pink Floyd), the Emperor Coated will be great. It all depends on my personal preference, the genres of music and the durability I want

    That was a great video with most heads sounding good. I keep getting sympathetic resonance from the floor tom (mainly) which you really seem to have eliminated. Is there a secret to it?

    • @roycox4415
      @roycox4415  11 месяцев назад +1

      I get Tom noise also but I try and make sure the kick tuning is sitting nicely below the floor Tom range so they don’t compete. You can try to place a small pillow on the floor directly underneath of the floor Tom to absorb the resonance and/or put a small piece of toilet paper taped to the bottom edge of the resonant head on that floor Tom to help that and the decay in general. I always have to cut some sustain from the floor anyway.

    • @roycox4415
      @roycox4415  Год назад +1

      I would probably keep the pilllow in there from what I’ve experimented with. The ps3 has great attack and a good full sound but it’s definitely still on the open side of things. Not like a straight emperor or ambassador of course but open enough that a bit of pillow in there will absorb some of the hollow sound in the bass drum, especially for recording.

      @roycox4415  Год назад +1

    Can I ask a couple questions. How do you like the EQ3 for a reso head vs say something like a Powerstroke 3, or more traditional 1 ply heads? Do you find it too muffled? Secondly, the Dunnett Reso-Tone what are your thoughts, and have you tried the non felt version for a kick batter? Also have you tried the Reso-Tone heads on toms at all? Cheers!

    • @roycox4415
      @roycox4415  Год назад +1

      Your first question. I have tried both and although they are very similar in what you end up hearing in the recording, the eq3 has a touch more low end bloom to me and is one of the all around best choices for a reso bass head in my opinion but either will work. Usually the thicker the reso head, the more sustain you will get. I also like old school clear or coated ambassadors on the bass reso head. Less bottom end but a nice punch. I did try the non felt version on the batter and I actually thought it sounded decent but to me it didn’t punch as nicely as the Powerstroke 3 batter head that it seemed to want to sound like so I prefer the Powerstroke 3 clear and coated on the batter if I’m going to go Remo. If I’m using Evans than I prefer the eq2 clear for open and the gmad for pre dampened. Unfortunately I have not tried the resotone on the toms yet. I honestly thought that the resotone heads were overpriced for what they ended up sounding like, aside from the kick resonant head with the felt strip. I also found that the felt strip did very little in dampening the sustain which is why I also use a cylindrical pillow against the inside of that resonant head. They charge too much for the reso tone heads in my opinion so I’d rather go with time tested Remo ps3’s or Evans EQ series, etc. Hope that helps out some! Roy

      @@roycox4415 Thanks Roy! Ya, sorry about all the questions, but I'm just abit nervous because I'm preparing for a drum recording coming up that I'm engineering/recording, and I just want it to go well, and want to choose some good heads to help me out abit for what I'm going for. I've recorded drums abit before, and used to play alot of drums, but it's a new kit that I've never recorded with, and I haven't experimented with alot of different heads before, but I am confident in my ability to tune, and tune for the situation/room, so I should be fine. If anything though, what I've struggled with the most on recordings in the past is kick. I've always been able to get inside kick sounds I'm happy with, but I've always been let down by my outside kick sound results, and I am a fan of good outside kick sounds, and also mics/gear isnt the issue. I think a big part has been using beat up/shitty drums that dont tune well, older heads, and sometimes the player, but the kit I'm using shouldnt be too bad. I just got a Pearl Reference Series kit 22/16/12/10 so should go fairly good! I think Ive decided on Coated Emps for all the batters, Clear Ambassadors for bottoms, and now just trying to decide on kick. I'm thinking a P3 Coated or Smooth White with a beater pad, and either the EQ3 or Resotone for the reso. Whats your opinion, should I get a Felt Tone or regular Resotone for the Reso? (I am going to likely add muffling inside anyway, and cut a port hole so not sure if I should go for an un dampened reso, and then just dampen to taste after? What do you think?

    I just changed my batter from the powerstroke pro that it came with. I had gotten used to it but read a bunch of reviews of everyone absolutely destroying the pro, I decided that maybe i didnt know what ‘good’ sounded like. I put a powerstroke 3 on and honestly it sounds so thin and crap, like a deadened floor tom with no low end anymore. Is this what a ‘good’ bass drum is supposed to sound like?? Its all punch and no low end

    • @roycox4415
      @roycox4415  Год назад

      It’s funny you wrote this comment. After years and I mean years of experimenting with drums in the studio setting I can’t tell you how much your statement hit home for me. When you first start working with tuning and prepping drums for recording tend to lean towards more muffling and trying to get the drums to sound in front of you like what you’re hearing in your favorite tracks, songs, etc. I chased that for years until I realized that what the drums sound like I front of me is absolutely not what they may sound like when recorded. I used to love the Superkick series but now it sounds to muffled and hip hop like for me. The Powerstroke has become my favorite along with heads like the emperor and controlled sound on bass drum. The thing these helps help with, when chasing a great all around tone, is great attack and a full low end that comes out when miked up. I used to muffle my snares way to much until I learned to tune better and now I’m going back to thinner heads or something like a controlled sound with no muffling. Again it all goes back to what sound you are looking for. Remember that hearing less low end when playing and seated behind the drums doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not there, you may just have more attack then you are used to hearing.

      @@roycox4415 after a few days of it being on I actually like the sound now! I think your ears have to adjust and when i played with ear protection i could actually hear more of the low end weirdly. I think the cymbals were masking the bass drum and my ears hadnt quite adjusted to the new eq of where the kick now is. Ill see how it goes but i quite like the sound now. I also agree about the room, i think if i get someone else to play it that might be a good test

    • @roycox4415

      Not much of a difference between those two heads although the dot added a tiny bit of attack to the inside kick mic tone when recording. Nothing you might hear out loud in the room though. Some of the heads however had a much larger difference in how it “felt” when playing. Like the thicker coated heads from Aquarian. Definitely a feel difference to me.

      He picked a relaxed easy to repeat middle volume. About the only way to make it through capturing all the sounds in a short time. It would have been nice to have a low to high volume sequence for each head, but that would have added 10% more time to get it done.

    Drum heads have zero to do with anything from the snare to the kick to the up and floor toms it always comes down to who’s hitting them.
    Preference is an individual choice there’s no test for that.
    I use Remo pinstripes on all my drums except my snare which is a coated E-3 and for me,I wouldn’t change.
    I mean no disrespect to anyone but have you ever noticed when you play people know it’s you?
    It’s the attack the feel and what your skills as a drummer are like regardless of the kit it’s gonna sound like you,just like a guitar rig your style is your business card.
