N.B.: This is a mashup of our 3 ULTIMATE bass drum head comparison videos (Evans comparison has been made in May 2018, Aquarian and Remo in December 2019) hence the slight variation in tempo (and change in clothing, rug or snare etc.) All heads were tuned at the same exact tension. We are grateful that every manufacturer provided their respective heads free of charge to help us make the original videos. Hope this clarifies any misunderstanding!

The audio was recorded using a matched pair of AKG C414 for overheads, a AKG D112 inside the bass drum and a AEA R84 outside the bass drum.
The video was filmed using a Canon Eos 70D and a Canon Eos Rebel T3i.

I counted 48 different tests here. If, and only assuming a conservative 20 minutes to change and tune each head, that is 16 hours plus whatever time it took to make sure audio and video was ok, etc. A massive amount of work, and truly appreciated. thanks.

I landed on this video after doing a search on bass head options. I got only 2 mins into it, this is an epic video. 💯% Agreed!!! I'm rethinking all of my kits now.
Crazy how Aquarian ended up finding their niche in kick drum heads! So many people won’t touch their snare or Tom heads but swear by their bass drum heads, including me!

great work! I sat through this whole thing only to confirm what I learned through 30 years of swapping drum heads: Aquarian Super Kicks are all that matters on the bass.
Very useful video! My favorites are Remo Pinstripe Clear, Remo Powerstroke 3 Clear, Aquarian Super Kick II Clear and Remo Powerstroke 3 Black Suede!

Used sk1 on my dw collector exotic birch, it brought thunder and you could feel the shock wave feets away. A lot better than my emad2

I’m a remo guy too (I don’t like evans cuz I think it’s has a kind of high pitch tone) , but lately I’ve been using force 1 for my 24 kick cuz I can’t find p3 for my kick at that time. And I think it’s really great for its price. So one point to aquarian from remo guy lol.
Just put a set on My gig set. A 22x18 gretsch poplar drum. Man, what a great sound it givea.

This was probably the most concise demonstration of kickdrum heads I've seen. The top three manufacturers were represented, in an equal play pattern. I was very surprised by Evans' EMAD Calftone. Deep punch, yet still defined enough to translate fast footwork with musical precision. Thanks for posting!

Thanks to this video I changed out my bass drum head with an Aquarian Super Kick II. I also ordered an Evans Blue UV coated Hydraulic. I will also be ordering an Evans EQ4 clear and EMAD 2.
This is fuckin badass man. Extremely helpful!!! If you ever revisit this in the future and have some different kinds of beaters, that would add even another layer to the badassery!! Don't let me take away from how cool this is though!!!

Wow! I've been playing 59 years and never realized how many BD heads there were and how big the differences were! I use Evans Emad with thin muffle ring but I gotta say, the Aquarian Super Kick II around 10:15 won me over! Thanks for this great comparo.
I remember commenting on the snare head comparison video but, did not on this one. I needed to. Absolutely invaluable. In this field, the most important videos on YT for all players. A tremendous Thank You for all your hard work. And kudos to the player(s) on these. Really cool rhythms.
I know others have said this already, but the amount of work u put into this is beyond words. Taking each head off, putting a new one on, tuning it, recording yourself to the same beat, repeat 70+ times. Thank u already adding what I need to my shopping list lol
I didn't expect to like the clear ambassador but I did. My regular choice is Clear Emad 2 with no foam ring that I liked more than my previous pinstripe.

I used to be full on Aquarian and was also a dealer. I had several phone calls with Roy about marketing (him advising me). When they moved production to Mexico, and Roy's presence began to diminish, my interests went elsewhere. But, I gotta tell ya: to me and generally speaking, Aquarian takes the blue ribbon for kick drum sounds.

Great video. So many great sounds from all three manufacturers. I guess it depends on what sort of sound you’re looking for. In most cases drummers want a fat bottom end. The only exception is jazz, where the kick is used completely differently to the rest.
Holy fuck remo and aquarian sound very similar. evans sound incredible dull, I expect more from a company who are supposdly "techonlogically advanced"

Clear/Coated Pinstripe is my default choice. These days I really enjoy Coated Vintage Emperor and Clear Powersonic!
And of course Aquarian’s Super Kicks are absolute classics too

From my own experience, the EMad2 is amazing!!! Mine is 13 years old and still sounds absolutely killer!!! I used to have an Aquarian SuperKickII on my old Pearl Export and that to sounded like an explosion going off!!!

Impressive! Thanks a lot for the video. It's super helpful. Now I understand why so many people uses Evans' drum heads, they all sounded good (or at least decent). I'm surprised that only a few Remo sounded nice. Aquarian was ok too. Their superkicks ones are very cool but they don't sell the diameter I need in the UK so I'll go for an Evans.
I've been using Emads for some time but that Ambassador Smooth White and the Clear gave me serious John Bonham vibes.

Remo Pinstrip and the Evans Emad with small ring, Aquarian Super Kick II, Aquarian Super kick 10 clear were the bst to me. But then I would throw on them a patch. And maybe a shirt inside or something so then those qualities will be reduced. Thanks for this video, must have cost an absolute fortune.
With the Superkick 10 all you need to do is add a weight or sand bag without it touching either head to get rid of the basketball sound. I had a SK10 for about a year or 2 and it lasted for a long time and sounded amazing

@@artpereira but the SK10 is a very controlled head so you may not even need any muffling
@@chromebull884 There will still be on stage feedback from the drum if it has any sustain so you will still have to muffle it. Doing 8ths or 16ths is not the best with even a tiny bit of sustain. So, I would still go for a classic pinstripe with a patch and a soft pillow for gigs
