    I have tried dozens of different heads from all brands and I have settled on two: EQ4 Clear and Heavyweight. They are both punchy (especially the HW) with attack that cuts through loud music while also sounding like a bass drum should. One thing to note is that the HW can't be played softly. It really only works with heavy hitting. The EQ4 works in low volume situations too and records very well. I don't see any situation that isn't covered with these two magnificent heads. Thanks so much for the video!

    Gotta love all those wide open heads with no muffling! Custom tailor your sound with lush wide open tones, add a bit of muffling and tame it down a bit. Pre-muffled heads make it easy to get a great sound out of the box, but I want full control of my tone.

      @@Strellock Yes that would be oh-so-gratifying. I literally can not thank these guys enough for doing these vids. (With GREAT SOUND, no less!! WTF!>! (Shock and awe :) The Remo Kick comparison AND the Snare drum head shootout were absolutely invaluable. Gave me Huge insight into what heads will work best with which snare I put them on. -As for the bass, I have a 1929 Ludwig Pioneer, 26" all mahogany bass drum. Surprisingly, (especially to me..Lol) was that the the Fiberskyn Ambassador is the hybrid vintage BOOM I've been looking for -a close 2nd to the Coated Emperor). Excellent balance, Great attack, yet still with some really cool, "Just enough" overtones and timbre to maintain it's very distinct and powerful tone and Serious air-moving Punch for rock. The Coated Emperor 26" (ideal for my tastes) is a bit more focused, has both attack/presence And boom in a tight kick ass package! So rad.. ~would pick one up but hard to find. There is nothing felt about them.. ~The only other ones are basically poodles on sticks and .. well, ,, No.... Lmao.. Anyway ..If you could point me in the right direction,,,Thank you! I find it hilariously astounding that I keep coming back just to hear the great kick drum & snare sounds more than I do music at the moment. !!OMG, and ALSO, Thank You for the 62 Heads vid!!! ~I'm currently building a sort of 'Baritone Piccolo' (still a 5.5" x 14, but thin, 5ply mahogany/poplar/Birch, no rings, and Glassed the inside of the shell for extra bright tone (which is based on the actual Cocobolo Piccolo the late Great Neil Peart played on Presto & RTB) This is from the shell-up, inspired mainly by that tone mixed with a bit of what I'm looking for personally. Without that vid (featuring the the Evans 'HD Dry' (also confirmed by 4 more random vids of the same head) I never would have had the proper ingredients for this special brew of wood, love, and polyurethane. ;) Light blue sparkle wrap on the way, and has a dual strainer, extended snare wire system (all 'Super-Sensitive' style). EQ4 clear and coated for my usual style and speed of playing. But I found faster / harder songs work better with EQ3, it allows the drum to come alive at a higher volume. Where as EQ4 would then get lost in the mix.

    You just cant beat that EMAD clear with the dampening ring. I've been using it for years and to me it sounds the best out of all of these

      Hi Mike, glad you liked that groove ;) The best sounding IMO was the EQ3 Frosted. Favourite 1-ply head was the UV1 and the most surprising is the Heavyweight (great balance between attack/bass/tone).

    EQ4 is the perfect punch. I'm not sure what reso would go well with it. My next heads are gonna be universal/metal. Probably just gonna get the Evan's 22" resonant head.

    It’s a toss up between the EMAD heavyweight and the Hydraulic blue. They make a red version of the hydraulic that uses thicker film.
    Great footwork and chops!!

    G2 clear or coated, seams like any with the outside ring kills the openness of the drum,I have a 1970 Ludwg 22x14 and looking for a new batter, eq4 on it right now, this was a great comparison, getting a g2 for sure now. Thanks

    • @paulboutin7191
      @paulboutin7191 3 года назад

      Yea, I used EQ3 for years as well. Then switched to power stroke while keeping the EQ3 resonant. Sounded nice. I just recently got the EMad. Always stayed clear of those heads w/all the big clunky muffling. Played a friends kit that had the Emad 2. Just the right amount of “click” that I prefer🤘

    Can't decide between the:
    Clear eq3
    Clear eq4
    Onyx
    Emad Heavyweight
    I am trying zu go for a realy punchy Metal Sound with a lot of low end..

    • @Timpanopercussion
      @Timpanopercussion  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Hannes, IMO you should go for the Heavyweight. I was surprised by how all that low end cuts in the mix! Let us know which one you'll choose :)

    • @legitpolice897

      Hannes Bauer definitely go for the Emad Heavyweight. I’ve been playing one for some time now I love it.

    I definitely dug this, man. That Yamaha bass really sings!
    I thought maybe could do a video of the different types of beaters. Figured you could use a break from changing all those heads. I don’t know how well the individual differences would come across on a recording though.

    • @Timpanopercussion
      @Timpanopercussion  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Chris! In fact we will soon place an order for LowBoy beaters and try to do a video comparing the different material they use! Stay tuned ;)
