  • Should you buy and install spacers on your car? In this video, I'm gonna be talking about my experience buying and installing 20mm spacers on my GR86, courtesy of Titan Wheel Accessories. If you've got any questions feel free to leave them below!

    I went 20mm, 25mm rear from titan and new black lugs also! And, i too noticed that the car doesnt break loose like before. Glad you made this video to let ppl know - subscribed 👍

      Appreciate it! Yeah the black lugs are so underrated, it's the little things that make the biggest difference. I do like the better handling characteristics with the spacers, and 20mm is just so mint for the stock wheels on this car.

      you increased the leverage of that tire by making the axle “longer” so forces on the outside of the wheel are increased.

    If you think off a car's suspension as geometry, you'll understand chassis dynamics a whole lot more than everyone else.

    • @relatablerides
      @relatablerides  Год назад

      Absolutely. It's wild to imagine how much engineering prowess had to go into a car's suspension in order to ensure the wheels can actually do what they're supposed to.

    Id also recommend to anyone not to get anything extremely wide as it can damage the wheel bearings. Larger the riskier

    • @relatablerides
      @relatablerides  Год назад

      Yep, I did a little research and apparently premature wheel bearing wear is the main problem with running spacers. Honestly even if they do shorten the wheel bearing life it's not an expensive repair parts-wise, and for the better fitment I think it's worth it.

  • @kill2liveand4fun
    @kill2liveand4fun Год назад +2

    The fitment definitely looks better. I was thinking of getting spacers but the fact that the car becomes grippier, I don't know if I want that. I'm trying to build my GR as a drift machine. I know the pain of making a turn in 2nd gear and giving it a little power sends the back end out, but I don't want to handicap myself when it comes to drifting. I'll probably get them anyway and put on some different wheels that would make it slide more to counteract that. Thanks for the video tho, it's definitely helpful!

    • @relatablerides
      @relatablerides  Год назад +1

      Yep if you love the drifting characteristic of the GR86 I'd say these spacers aren't for you. I thought the rear end personally was too slidey, so this feels like an improvement to handling. Keep in mind too if you're gonna get wider wheels they'll probably have the same effect as the spacers, especially if the offset is a little wider as well. If you want to maintain that slideyness then you'll need more power, hopefully companies start making turbo and supercharger kits soon, that'll make this thing a drift missile 🚀

      The load difference is very small. Maybe 1%.

    • @relatablerides
      @relatablerides  Год назад

      @@artblackwood7936 As far as the turning characteristics are concerned, that's absolutely true. What I can tell you from a driving perspective (I don't have the engineering knowledge to give specifics) is that the way the car delivers the power in a turn has definitely changed. I'm sure there's some sort of equation out there that can explain this, but the car doesn't seem to lose grip as frequently during power delivery in a turn (or straight line power delivery, though that hasn't changed noticeably with the spacers). If there does happen to be some video out there explaining this and you happen to find it, please let me know.

      @@relatablerides I would start a engineering explained, Wheel Spacers & Adapters - Good Or Bad? I've seen some more technical ones. If I find them I'll send them along.

    • @relatablerides
      @relatablerides  Год назад

      @@artblackwood7936 Yep, I've seen that one. Actually watched it before getting the spacers. If you look at TheRealCoza's comment either above or below this one you'll see my thoughts on it. I can't necessarily speak to every single aspect of Engineering Explained's video, but he does make very valid points. All I can say with confidence is what my own experience has been with spacers, and the change in how the car puts the power down was noticeable enough to mention here.

    Do you plan on putting on coilovers? I wonder if it will rub with the spacers

    • @relatablerides
      @relatablerides  Год назад

      I'm hopefully planning on getting air suspension installed if everything goes well in the coming months. Based on how the wheel fits right now, I don't think it'll rub up against the fender if it's lowered. Worst case if you want that super tight wheel gap you could always stiffen up your dampers on coils and it'll work just fine.

  • @GurenReroll

    If I lower my stock brz limited trim by one inch with springs, add 20mm spacers like you did, will that change anything drastically?
    I think the fitment alone on yours looks great with the spacers but I do want to get rid of that top gap slightly.
    I assume these are 18" tires and not 17"?

    • @relatablerides
      @relatablerides  9 месяцев назад +1

      I don't imagine it'll make a drastic impact on the stock suspension geometry or add any weird strain on places there shouldn't be. If anything you'll just end up with super clean fitment with the stock wheels.
      Dropping it about an inch will definitely clean up that top gap. If I wasn't daily driving this car on New Jersey roads I'd have already lowered it by now lol 😂. That would lock in really good looking fitment for sure.
      Yep, the GR86 Premium and BRZ limited share the same style 18" wheels, the only difference being the finish on the wheels. The GR86 has the matte black finish while the BRZ has a more grayish matte finish. Other than that the wheels are identical in terms of sizing and shape.
      Let me know if this helps!

    Is an alignment needed with spacers added ?

    • @relatablerides
      @relatablerides  Год назад +1

      You're not changing any of the suspension components, so the geometry remains the same. An alignment shouldn't be needed, and after install the car didn't feel like the alignment was off.

    Suspension stock ?

    • @relatablerides
      @relatablerides  9 месяцев назад

      Yep, for the time being I'm gonna stick with stock suspension. This car is my daily, and let's just say the roads between my house and my uni aren't the best out there. Hopefully if I can manage to afford air suspension in the future that's the route I'm gonna go. Thanks for leaving a comment!
