wow wow wow. I work for Toyota & have to say, this is one of the best reviews and walk throughs I’ve seen for the GR86. Thank you for taking the time to really dig deep into the mechanics of this new generation. It’s great to see a true appreciation for the small details instead of the big channels that get the same information for a quick glance or google search.
This guy knows his stuff like none other technical reviewer. Who better to talk the real talk then an actual mechanic who's worked on all sorts of engines. Great work big fan.
Decision to buy these cars will be much harder without reviews like this. Specially mechanical part from a Toyota experienced mechanic. Thank you 👍 @speedcar99 and your mechanical reviews are my best favorite
Another brilliant episode, from one of the best channels around. Period. I love this car, not only for what it stands for, but how they updated this model. Many thanks for the excellent review. I've now got to go take a real look at one. :-)
Love your content brother, it’s great to hear from an educated mechanic that knows how to communicate in real life terminology. As a veteran Service Writer for Honda I greatly appreciate your knowledge. Keep up the great work!
Wow! This was the most informative and detailed video I've seen about the GR86. You did an amazing job of covering the specific differences from old to new! I learned a lot. Thanks so much!!
I'm a GR86 owner. I love it. Thanks for all the great content. Btw, the fuel door is modeled after a headlight cover from the Toyota 2000GT. little Easter egg for ya :) May the Lord bless you and keep you as well, sir.
Glad to hear a professional doesn't consider the GR86 "slow." 225 hp in a RWD 2800-lb coupe is not "slow." Drove me crazy when reviewers dogged on the first-gen's power. Not everything is a drag car! Some of us like to enjoy corners more than straight line speed. My Honda fit has just over 100 hp and it slays in the corners. I would never consider it "slow." I feel the same about Miatas.
My Outback XT that weighs half a ton more is quicker to 60mph than the GR86. My F350 that weighs more than twice as much is only a second slower to 60 mph. It may out handle them in the corners, but that doesn't change the fact that the GR86 is slow and too small to be practical for most people.
@@Noah_E If straight line acceleration is your ONLY point of reference, then sure, the GR86 is not a "fast car" compared to modern standards. On any road with more than a gentle curve, your F350 would get absolutely dusted by a 100 hp econobox after a few twisties. To me, that makes it slow.
I've owned a 2018 86GT for about a year and a half. Bought it for a daily driver to augment my 2003 Tundra I bought new and has been basically trouble free... I just wanted something newer to drive to work. I'm sixty years old and I LOVE my 86 (33mpg). It has just enough power to be a LOT of fun but won't get me into too much trouble. I do have an Open Flash tune in it and I may do headers eventually but that's down the road. I really like the second Gen GR86 but I just don't want to take on a longer car payment plus Kentucky's yearly tax on newer vehicles is criminal.
Excellent video - thanks. As for the manual, I definitely feel a difference (for the better) in my 2022 gr86 vs the 2013 or 2017 brz I owned. Better engagement and feel than the quite notchy gen 1 cars. As for durability, I’m only 4 months into ownership but I think the problems come from owners beating on the cars and not possessing the skill to drive quickly and avoid adrenaline causing needlessly hard shifting. Being smooth makes you faster. As other reviewers have mentioned, the fundamental upshot of the bored out motor is that the “torque dip” of the old 2.0l model is all but eliminated. In real world driving, it makes this a much more enjoyable sports car to own. Wonder if this thinner cylinder walls make for long term reliability concerns. I also don’t have any problems triggering the armrest opening, but I agree that it could have been designed more intelligently. Most importantly, I learned technical things about the generational comparison that no other content provider has shown me….thanks!
Bro you did amazingly to speak about the differences. And this car is special to me as it was my first car ever. 2016 scion fr-s. But where you made me subscribe is where you said "may the Lord bless you and keep you" God bless you too man. And thank you for what you do and what you stand for.

Great to see your feelings about this car. I personally am glad the manual lacks the OTT safety features. Pitty about the gearbox issues, because otherwise its pretty good. My biggest grip is the new indicator stalk... drives me absolutely insane. Lets be honest though, this is the next best thing to a Cayman 4.0 for the everyday person.

This is the first video I have seen of yours. It was so thorough and had information that absolutely no one else has provided. You earned a new subscriber.
there's some other changes on the synchros that arent mentionned from what i can see. 2nd gear has a better synchro but probably not noticed, the synchros were updated from the 13-14 year frs/brz later, and the factory fluid used to kinda suck ass and people had better shifting with other oils. he compares it alot to the first years which is fine since my 18+ honestly doesnt have much changed. but an example is the ECU placement on the engine changed as well on the 17+
Watching your videos, now changing my oil every 5000 miles on my A25A engine, add 2 bottles of injection cleaner every 5000 miles, and it sure makes a difference.
The 2017 facelift of the 86 included some of the 'new' interior features he describes. Also, I heard no mention of the significantly increased fuel consumption, which is not merely a question of cost, it reduces the old car's 'adequate' range. But for sure, the GR has a much improved overtaking ability and is significantly more refined (less cabin noise and without odd extraneous noises).
@@twhalenI'm not convinced that the road noise is greater in the GR than the GT. It is certainly more noticeable because other noise sources have been damped out. I love how well detailed and thorough you are! You go deep into the details! Down to the small ones. Actually that was my second Toyota car! When I heard that Toyota and Subaru where on a joining venture to produce a rear wheel drive back to basics sports car! I had to own one, mine was the first edition 2013 blue Scion FR-S. What a great little sport car that was, the car wasn’t a super fast car! But it was fast enough and it handled very well on the twistiest roads of willow springs road and country side Illinois. The only thing I couldn’t drive it during the winter months, way too dangerous for my taste! So the car sat in the garage parked during the winter. I only drove it in the summer and on nice dry sunny weather. So I used to drive my wife’s suv at the mean time, So when my wife had to start driving to north shore for her job, I had no choice but to trade my car for something I could drive in all weather. So I ended up trading it for a Jeep Wrangler. I really didn’t want to trade it! But had no choice. Boy now that I moved to Arizona I’m looking for a low mileage great condition one! But the prices for a great used one with low mileage are to the roof!! Great video my friend!👌😎👍
Can you check out 900BRZ's video regarding drops in oil pressure? He concluded that excess RTV is not the cause for oil starvation, and ironically with all the extra baffles, the older gen engine is more resistant to pressure drops. It would be a great comparison if you could do a teardown comparison of the internals when you get one of these destroyed engine in your shop.
I 1st hand experienced this center console opening as I rest my arm to shift gears. I must say I am very surprised this center console design made it to production. Hopefully the next revision of the vehicle will asses this issue. Very annoying when you literally always keep opening/closing center console. :/
This is sadly one of the many reasons I won't consider buying this car over a GR Corolla anymore. Give us a practical center console lid or don't give us one at all like the GR Corolla.
That center console was designed soo poorly, you’re right, how did it make to production. I have a ‘23 on order and that cup holder is my biggest gripe. I’ll probably put a fence of closed cell foam around it.
@@JediPeaceWalker I'll agree its annoying, but stop you buying the car? There literally nothing else like it for the money. Just jamb it shut or somthing. The GR Corolla is totally different proposition, its front a front biased AWD turbo hot hatch vs a NA rear drive low sports car. I really wonder sometimes.
Had a 2014 BRZ for over 4 years and was a super fun car to drive. The only thing I didn't like about it was the infamous 'torque dip' in the midrange and the general lack of torque. Still yet to drive the new GR86/BRZ but the new motor looks vastly better on paper. Great review mate.
Did you get an automatic or a manual? And I agree, looks carry a big factor and it is a beautiful car with very nice lines. Especially in the red color
Very nice to hear you talking of such a great Toyota for me ! I really would enjoy to hear you also talking of the MR spyder one of these days as I own one and also there is so many enthusiasts of Toyota sports cars everywhere in the world! Hello from France !
Just bought a CPO 2019 TRD and man it was a good decision. With the upgraded suspension, brake and the TRD exhaust I won’t have to upgrade anything for a while. Plus I prefer the look of the older gen over the newer one anyways.
After owning a 350Z for 15 years, I'm ready for a replacement. This might just be it. Let's hope the RTV issue gets sorted out soon. Thank you for such a good video!
Not surprised by the oil problems in the old one. Its the same engine (or very close too) that was in the third an forth gen WRX. But despite these problems it still wasn't as bad as the early ej15 and 20 in the early Imprezas.
Toyota have indeed fitted the GR Yaris / Corolla engine in to a few GR 86 but there not production prototypes, there just testbed vehicles for synthetic fuels & racing development.
Would be amazing if Toyota used this body/chassis & offered the Camry 4cyl n/a engine, or even the Lexus 4cyl turbo engine. Sure it might take away from the lower center of gravity that they are going for, BUT from an enthusiast stand point and a technician stand point this would make long term servicing on this vehicle and drive ability a 10/10 in my eyes! I have never & probably will NEVER be a fan of these H-TYPE engines at all, in my opinion they are such an inconvenience when it comes to the 4 cylinder engine family because now you have this H layout with is practically the same as a V block layout where you've now got 2 valve covers and 2 sides to everything. I am also just a sucker for INLINE engines too though. Love your videos brother!
Not really going to work when the whole car was designed around the low centre of gravity Boxer 4. Besides, if there was ever an engine that would truly suit the chracter of this car, it would be an NA straight four with an 8500rpm redline and ITBs. Like an old Toyota engine!!!
Wow, THIS is a useful and informative review! I appreciate the honesty and detailed analysis of the pros and cons to the design of this car. I wish it was a fully Toyota engineered and built car. I remember wanting one, especially after the raving reviews by the car mags when it was introduced. Glad I never got one although I’m sure it’s fine as a daily driver under normal use.
Have you heard of badge engineering? Toyota own a big chunk of Subaru and basically talked Subaru into building a sportscar they could put a Toyota badge on; at least Toyota engineers were involved..
@@petesmitt thank you, I just meant that the car would’ve been far better as a 100% Toyota engineered and built vehicle without the Subaru components. Toyota just wanted the Boxer engine to build the lower profile design. Unfortunately the engine has a less favorable reputation for longevity.
@@hawgbreath of course; but Toyota have form with getting other manufacturers to build cars for them, like the Supra, which is basically a BMW Z4 and built in Europe.
I’ve been watching your channel for awhile and I love where your going with it, stunning quality videos thank you! Being a Toyota enthusiast I am always looking forward to the next video :)
Oh, how I loved and adored my (brand new at the time) 1994 Toyota Celica GT, liftback, spoiler, fire engine red…I never should have sold that car!!! Every time I need to get a new car, no Celica…a year later, a Celica 🤦♀️ This is Celica-ish and very cool looking, I’ve sat in one…but…got the RAV4, lol…I’m at the “practical car” age now 😭
Great content, love your channels. When buying a new car I will care less for any kind of intrusive technology ("safe systems, Toyota safety or Subaru Eyesite"). Prefer, I (me) drive. When went car sear for my wife in 2019, she make sure cars could be get with out intrusive tech and chose the Mitsubishi Out lander Sport because was one of few cars that were available without it.
Excellent technical review and especially value your pointing out the fuel quick connects and 4th gear synchro which no one else has mentioned. Who cares about oil baffles when there is a huge problem with excessive RTV sealant breaking off and clogging the oil pickup tube leading to oil starvation? What a ridiculous, catastrophic problem showing up on many examples. I was planning to buy a GR86 but no way would I buy this car until the problem is fixed conclusively. Even if they change the engine sealing, will have to wait 1-2 model years to make sure no early issues. Do you know if Toyota is planning to change not only the oil pan but also timing chain cover sealant design?
I own a 2016 scion frs and everytime I take it out somebody asks me if I want to sell it. The frs looks nicer than the gr86 but that's just my opinion!
AMD, Call me old fashioned but I want my Toyotas built by Toyota with Toyota/Denso/Aisin parts. The upcoming 100% Toyota GR Corolla is more my cup of tea😁
I would have to have them FIRST, sync up all the gears (as you said), and also beef up the front brakes a tad, as well as getting rid of that 'stupid' center counsel button -- are you kidding me, they do have engineers for the interior, right? Other than that, it's a cool little car! I'll wait for '23 so see what improvements they make. Thanks for the video, you did a great job as usual!
P.S., I forgot to say, I, personally, like the "rough-feel" shift, of gears meshing with metal, unlike the soft 4th gear with a soft-shim-feel. In this one instance, I'll agree to disagree with the car nut. But, it's a personal preference, and we all have our own. Cheers!
Not sure where you got an info that brake disc size went down. Old 86 and the new GR86 both come with the 294mm discs. I believe only the Brembo ones had bigger discs
I have wondered about oil behaviour in high-speed corners in boxer engines; Porsche obviously has it nailed because they are super-competitive even in the long endurance races like Le Mans.. so thanks for explaining that! Regarding the rear seats - they're clearly not for people, I don't know why they don't make that space like the space behind the seats in the 1+1/2-cab pickup trucks, all it needs to be is like a carpeted box..
Wish more toyota mechanics were as knowledgable. They almost sent me home with an exhaust leak after replacient the cat converter on my GR86 (road debris). I had to tell them repeadeatly the exhaust sound was not normal until they agreed to take it back into the shop, to then tell "oh yeah it has a leak, we just thought the car sounded like this from factory"
I really wish Toyota would develop their own Sport car again. These partnerships with Subaru and BMW have proven that the engines/cars are just not the reliability people come to expect from Toyota.
I wish you would get some sort of sound meter and show just how quiet these vehicles really are as you drive them down the highway. Give us some sort of rating to go by. Thanks for another quality and informative video.
Every car manufacturer should hire the car care nut to do a full review of their cars for an in depth inspection before they release it… that way we’ll all have piece of mind thanks car care nut.
Old school Chevy small blocks had displacements from 283 to 383 with the same block. That's going from 4.7L to 6.2L in metric, LS engines are similar. This doesn't affect the life span at all.
I like it. I just got a new Subaru Forester Wilderness and wanted the BRZ as sports car but after seeing this I think I rather have the Toyota version of it.
Great video! I loved my 13 BRZ in dark grey metallic. It was the slowest and most fun vehicle I’ve ever owned. I bought it out of excitement that Toyota was dipping its toes into bringing a exciting vehicle back to the market. I went to a Toyota dealer and looked a a FRS w/o keyless and found the key to be in a poorly placed area with the ergo of the handbrake. So Knew I needed the keyless that the brz premium offered. Had a blast picking the car off of a car hauler with some wrapped brzs. Even had a infant and the small seats made have a baby in car easy because we just could reach back anytime my daughter needed anything. She also loved riding around in it and would fall asleep in the car all the time maybe because it’s so bumpy. Either way it was a great car and even made for a good car with an infant.
2013-2020 BRZ Premium doesn't have keyless entry and push-start. It has the same turn-key ignition as the FR-S. Only the BRZ Limited has keyless entry and push-start.
Are you sure those are brake vents? 22:30 I think they’d be more on the edge of the front grill right? I haven’t seen the car up close. But usually those vents on the sides/edges of the bumper are for aero (for the car body) and the brake vents are usually inside more so the air can travel through a plastic duct to the calipers and rotors. But again I haven’t looked at this car. I wish there was a shot of the wheel well to see where the air is pointing/directed
AMD, my Mom had a 1985 Corolla GTS lift back. My sister is 9 years older than I and we were quite comfortable in the back of that car; maybe the engineering team for the GR86 needs to take a look at those GTS blue prints. Lol

Thank you for such a good video!
it has NOT been fixed yet. Look on RUclips for numerous videos on the gr86 after 1000 miles still picking up rtv and clogging the pick up screen
Stellar .. excellent camerawork as well - 37 mins well spent.
Not surprised by the oil problems in the old one. Its the same engine (or very close too) that was in the third an forth gen WRX. But despite these problems it still wasn't as bad as the early ej15 and 20 in the early Imprezas.
The new car is better, but the old car looked better in my opinion, even if the new one looks just fine.
I read a article that said that Toyota was experimenting with putting a turbo charged 3 cylinder in the GR86. Sounds pretty cool.
Wouldn't fit. Subaru bodies are designed to fit that engine
The Toyota 1.6 I-3 meant for the GR Yaris would be amazing in this thing.
@wangchung - would have been great. Would do wonders to the front end of this thing and would be lighter. Missed opportunity Toyota…
Not really going to work when the whole car was designed around the low centre of gravity Boxer 4. Besides, if there was ever an engine that would truly suit the chracter of this car, it would be an NA straight four with an 8500rpm redline and ITBs. Like an old Toyota engine!!!
Good, honest technical review. No hype. Thank you.
Very nice job! Next in the series should be "Can you buy a GR86. . ." (5-6 month wait and some dealers charging "market adjustments")
Great video. I can fit my 4 track tires in the back seat and still fit all my tools, coolers and chair
the best detailed review I have watched
I’ve been watching your channel for awhile and I love where your going with it, stunning quality videos thank you! Being a Toyota enthusiast I am always looking forward to the next video :)
your only half right.
the design is causing issues on right hand turns with dramic changes in oil pressure.
the old version was more steady
Great video, 99% of the so call car channels just reads things everyone already know.
This was very informative and it's good to see the engineer's improved the engine.Though not a fan of plastics.
Oh, how I loved and adored my (brand new at the time) 1994 Toyota Celica GT, liftback, spoiler, fire engine red…I never should have sold that car!!! Every time I need to get a new car, no Celica…a year later, a Celica 🤦♀️ This is Celica-ish and very cool looking, I’ve sat in one…but…got the RAV4, lol…I’m at the “practical car” age now 😭
Love this channel. Can't get enough of your videos sirre. Wish you great success
"Many" examples is still a tiny fraction. However, I agree its not good enough.
I asked for this content from you and you definitely delivered 🤙🏽🤙🏽
The Gr 86 already interests me but the Gr 86 with the G16E-GTS turbocharged 1.6 L 3 cylinder engine from the Gr Corolla really interests me.
Best gr86 video so far!!!
I own a 2016 scion frs and everytime I take it out somebody asks me if I want to sell it. The frs looks nicer than the gr86 but that's just my opinion!
Never seen someone cap more
came across this video by random. i don’t regret clicking off 💪
great review! Definitely wait to for the next year model to see what issues Toyota addresses.
AMD, Call me old fashioned but I want my Toyotas built by Toyota with Toyota/Denso/Aisin parts. The upcoming 100% Toyota GR Corolla is more my cup of tea😁
This with the 1.6L 3cyl turbo…ooooh-yeah!
@@billplaschka9279 The 86 already has an Aisin transmission so the Toyota engine should bolt up to it easily. 😉
And the indicator stalks. TRD sells bigger brakes, expect to see it as an option on new cars in a year when the range needs a boost.
And what I like is the colour - finally a car that is not black, white or grey:)
I learned about the sealer on those Subaru boxers from a Sub owner. Couldn't believe it when I first saw that engine in a FRS.
“May the Lord bless you and keep you” Amen brother 💜✝️
FA20 Timing cover and cam plate reseal video would be awesome, so many get it wrong including dealers lol
I really wish Toyota would develop their own Sport car again.
These partnerships with Subaru and BMW have proven that the engines/cars are just not the reliability people come to expect from Toyota.
The BMW 6 is one of the best of all time.
Yes well this guy missed the stupid indcator stalk so thats not fully peice of mind.
For us old gear heads, thin walled cylinders means more power, heavier feet and shorter life span.
Shorter life span for the engine definitely
Old school Chevy small blocks had displacements from 283 to 383 with the same block. That's going from 4.7L to 6.2L in metric, LS engines are similar. This doesn't affect the life span at all.
@@21jimmyo actually the Chevy small block goes to 400 cid
@@21jimmyo tell me honestly that you go through all the work of bore and stroking a SBC to 383 and you're going to drive it like gas miser? I bet not.
Truth so thicker walls is more power and durability.
I really want this car as my college graduation gift. 6 speed standard transmission
it's a mod to retro fit the forester turbo oil cooler on the old engine. both used similar engines and nearly all the parts fit.
Lol
