I like that in the RF the rollbar is low enough, so that when you flip over and hang in the belts, the rollbar doesnt prevent your head from getting smashed by concrete like a potato. You wouldnt want to have a fighting chance in an accident in a miata would you.
@@juice-opinion haha yeah +5% weight for added security and less noise. Also the ragtop will be a pain replacing as it ages. Sooo not worth it ;) if youre going the racing argument route, get another car for the 5% difference
I have an NB MX5 and not much has changed since then. The recipe works. Light, well-balanced, and it has an awesome transmission that makes for a good time behind the wheel. Like a lot of "car guys" I dismissed them until I drove one. Then I got it, it's all about the joy of driving, nothing more, nothing less. Nothing is better than zipping down a curvy road in the fall with the top down and the heater keeping the lower half of your body warm. The first time I did this, I realized why guys in old British roadsters wore gloves.
With no wind to overcome the heater, I've driven top down in 18 degrees F in complete comfort (ND1 Club). Driver window down and passenger window 1/2 up can calm the cabin air considerably. A good hat is a requirement.
27:19 Having bought our ND2 in the winter, I can tell you there are fewer joys greater than a top-down cruise on a brisk day with the heat on and seats cooking. Feels great!
When living in Canada on my NA I’d swap out all four alloy wheels for cheap steel wheels, each carrying a skinny, deep-lugged snow tire. Never did I get stuck. But even better, on a snowy road I could do perfect four-wheel drifts, just like a WRC car. The heater on my canvas-topped car was totally up to the job of keeping me warm. In the spring I’d replace my alloy wheels with performance tires, having spared them from salt and abrasion damage over the winter.
@@johntechwriter I live in BC and had a 92 with limited slip rear with one size up aggressive M+S tires on the stock rims for winter that thing was amazing in snow. I had snow coming over the hood and it would just keep going. People would be stuck and I'd just snake by like it was nothing. I actually looked forward to the snow. My nephew owns it now and it's still going.
My mother had a mk.1 MX-5 (1991) in British Racing Green. She loved zipping around in that thing. Was parked outside year-round. My brother and I 'stole' it while she was on holiday, had the dull paintwork machine polished, the wheels refurbed and a lovely (but expensive) chocolate-coloured mohair soft top fitted. Finished off with a proper clean inside and in the engine bay, plus a service. It looked great! Mum was blown away and drove that little car until she was no longer strong enough to manoeuvre it (no PAS). I was very impressed when I drove it. Far more enjoyable than a, what, 90hp car had any right to be.
I bought a 2023 MX-5 GT a few days ago. I was an owner of a 1968 MGB many years ago. I sold my MGB in the late 1970's and I have missed it ever since. I couldn't be more pleased than I am with my new Mazda. It is so refined compared to my old MG, yet it still retains the basic raw driving experience. If you like true classic sports cars then you should buy an ND Miata.
Miata fan here (owned 2 - NA and NC), so I really appreciate this one. As far as the antenna getting hit in the Car wash. Generally most people in the Miata community don't use automated car washes. Even when I lived in a apartment, I never used an automatic car wash. I used a coin-op sprayer. Miata base was $13.8K in 1989, that's about $33K inflation adjusted. Miata base in 2022 is about $28K. So the base car is LESS expensive today, than it was on introduction in 1989 when you take inflation into account. Finally, they aren't really that slow. 0-60 is under 6.0 Seconds (5.7-5.9 seconds, in C&D, MT, R&T). It's not a V8 killer, but it's not bad, and all Miatas feel even faster than they are.
Great review. I live in snow country and drive my 2018 RF all year with win no problems. You can not drive a Miata without smiling! There are two kinds of people in the world. Those that want a Miata and those that have never driven one.
I listen to the radio...a lot. Real antennas provide a much better signal than the shark fin alone or the antenna molded into the front or back windows.
I watch a lot of car reviews. You are very good at covering the important information and still being entertaining. I appreciate your style, good info, no wasting time on opinions and fluff. It’s telling that you start with the mechanicals instead of the exterior of the car as so many reviewers do. I am a car guy, and I care more about the mechanicals than the styling cues. Excellent review!

MX-5s (Miatas) are awesome little cars, my favorite sports car. Since 1970 I have owned a Mustang Mach 1, a Corvette, a Supra, a 300ZX, 4 different Honda S2000s and I now own my 6th Miata, a Polymetal grey 2021 RF Club with the BBS, Brembo, Recaro package. This one is a keeper! Great review, love your channel.
Does it feel more fun or similar to s2000? I always wanted the s2000 but the price for a decent used is high. Surprisingly the interior room is similar.
I bought a new one of these earlier this year (the RF variant cause it rains a lot here) and I'm absolutely in love with it. It will do anything you want it to do, surprising amount of space in the boot, amazing temperature control, it can be loud and quick when you want it to be but it'll also cruise quietly and not put a hole in your wallet for fuel. The sense of speed from sitting so low is insane. I've driven Ferraris and Lambos round tracks but the MX-5 is just as fun in a different way, very light and easy to change direction. Yes it doesn't have a screaming V8 / V10 but to me it sounds amazing when I put my foot down, even driving within the speed limit it manages to put a huge smile on my face.
also gotta say it's so odd seeing the left hand drive model. Some other differences are, my car doesn't have that wierd shark fin on the boot but it DOES have a little button to open the boot on the underside of the little lip down to where the number plate is
I tested a 2021 used MAZDA MX-5 MIATA RF GRAND TOURING yesterday. Do you experience any water getting to the interior through the convertible or windows?
@@shanellecooper2981 no not at all, it seals up nicely when the windows are all the way up. You do got some dripping down onto the seats when you open the door to get in but other than that I've had zero issues and I live in the North of England where it's literally famous for raining so much
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again I love the dial. I don’t like touchscreen leaves, smudges and smears. I like it clean and crisp and I’m able to meet maintain just that with the dial kudos Mazda.
I've owned an NC for 10 years and counting. Great sound, direct steering feel, cornering prowess, sporty stick shift, low driving position ... what a compelling package! I paid €7,000 for it back in 2013 and have been using it as a third car along with my sedan and coupe.
My first car in 1977, was a 1966 MG midget. This Mazda MX5 reminds me of that car, but only a million times better. Now that I'm retired, I've been looking for an old MG, but one in decent shape is not a lot less than decent used MX5 or even an older Miata. I really enjoy watching the Car Care Nut's videos. Keep up the excellent work!
I have a 1966 MGB in British racing green ("new" paint, but that was also the original color). It has some replacement parts (seats) and black over-paint on the originally chrome bumpers. I have a bit of a love affair with the car (my Mom was driven to the hospital to give birth to me in it) but I should sell it (can't park it or work on it where I live, etc, it is in storage living a sad life but should be tootling around on the roads). I have the original purchase receipt for it - including an extra charge for seat belts. If you (or anyone else) are still looking for one, let me know. It is in Crofton, MD. It had an extensive reconditioning in 1993 by Mountjoy's Auto (an MG specialist shop in Maryland) - shop orders available.
There is a button to open the trunk from the outside. It's on the upper part of the license plate area towards the right side. Pretty easy to miss unless you know.
I really appreciate this review. Out of the hundreds of reviews on the ND Miata this one is unique. Technical info I had never heard along with a honest appraisal of the car. I’ve owned four Miatas, sold them all but am itching for an ND2. Thanks for this great video!! However, you are 100% wrong about the dial. I have a dial in my 2017 Mazda3. Touchscreens are dangerous. The dial is intuitive. I own a 2021 Sienna. In my opinion it is far far inferior to the Miata. No dial. I never have understood the complaints about the dial. The dial is fantastic.
When I bought my 1st of, now my 4th MX-5, I bought it for the fun of driving, nothing more than that. I found the car to be quite reliable and easy to maintain. The money saved will easily offset any costs of replacing the top whenever that starts deteriorating. My 3rd MX-5, had about 80Kmiles on it, no problems. I had to try a new color and those Terracotta Napa leather seats, so I went for the new 2023 MX-5 about 3 weeks ago and had to drive over 100 miles to a dealer that had the one I wanted. I wouldn't have done that for any other car. They put the new muffler on my old MX-5 and installed my Racing Beat muffler on the new MX-5 for me, the muffler I've had on all 3 of the previous MX-5's. A true Roadster is supposed to have a lot of wind noise, loud and rough riding. I've never been a Cadillac type guy. Still having fun at 78 yrs. old and still love driving, driving the last true Roadster under $100K.
Is the automatic as good as the manual, or almost as good? What is the actual practical difference in the experience? Why don't all MX-5 models come with automatic transmission? I'm 47 and looking to pass my test and get my first car. I just hate gear changing & want to get the automatic only licence. May I please garner your opinion, weighted with many years of priceless experience? Many thanks.
Hi - I can help here- I had a 2.0 Litre ND1 Automatic - my wife insisted on an automatic so she could drive the car. Long story short - I now own an ND2 2.0 Litre Manual. Let me tell you from experience and listen to the reviews when they say the manual is best - it is and if you can practice - it one of the easiest to drive. The car has a hill holder function that takes the stress out of manual gearbox driving. Persevere and get the manual would be my advice - but make sure you are competent and confident before taking the car on a public road.
I owned a 2001 NB for 17 years as my 4 season daily driver. I installed aftermarket seat heaters in hopes that my wife would better enjoy drives in crisp fall/spring days. Best thing I ever did to a car, to the point that I used them all the time as well. Don't knock 'em until you use them on a top down, frosty morning drive.
Speaking as a Mazda fanatic this was awesome and 200% entertaining. Many many thanx from Sweden. Illinois is actually more Swedish than you think as more Swedes lived in Chicago than Stockholm at one point. Really dig this cool no BS, hands on utuber . Keep it up bro😃
You are correct about Chicago’s explosive population of Swedes at the turn of the 20th Century. May I recommend a book you might enjoy? “Swedish Chicago” by Paul Michael Peterson and published by Arcadia in 2003. I know the author…😉
Ive owned two Miatas also. I had a 1995, NA, and a 2001, NB. Both cars were excellent, totally reliable, and a blast to drive. What a little hot rod, a true sports cars. MX5s haul ass! Super Impressive. This 2022 MX5 in this video is beautiful. I agree, Mazda should use both direct injection and port, like Toyota does. Good job with your review.
Great review. I love this car. I bought my RF in 2017 and I’ve been daily driving it ever since. The Miata is quite sure footed once you have winter tires on it. And the heated seats are in necessity in Toronto winter.
With cloth seats in a 2016 Club heated seats add weight. I've never been cold in winter driving my soft top / top down & where I live it gets frigid ! Side windows up with the heater on full is great fun in winter. My daily driver too. Use the 303 Convertible Cleaner / Fabric Guard & never had a problem. I don't EVER park under trees & the interior has stayed bone dry !
Great Review. Loved it. Missed that there is an exterior button for the trunk, but it is hidden and above the license plate. The antenna is there because when the glass is down, it wouldn't get reception. The stock one is designed for the best FM reception. Seat heaters are awesome to use in a convertible when it is a bit cool, turn on the heat and the seat heaters and open the top. I use my RF as a daily driver all winter in snow country. Top stays up for months and then down most of the summer. Heated seats, heated side mirrors and heated windshield washer nozzles are useful. No heated wheel, however, the air vents next to your hands blow hot air on your hands within a few minutes.
Good points, thanks What about the touch screen? I saw another review that showed the touch screen working when it's not moving but it's turned off when it is moving.
@@Outlaws28 That's correct, the touchscreen is disabled while you are driving, and enabled once the car is stopped. Fortunately that center control stick is easy to use and very responsive. After a few weeks it will become muscle memory; sometimes I don't even have to look at the screen to know what i'm doing.
@@FungusUSMC I totally disagree about the touchscreen and use of the control button. With CarPlay, it takes like 37 clicks to get where you need to and then you overshoot. One quick touch would save a lot of hand motion. The screen should not be disabled. I love the car, but the touchscreen issue is at the top of my pet peeves.
I love the commentary about the antenna around 23:20. It’s something I didn’t even notice, but now I can’t unsee see it and I can’t un-hear your rant about it. Great review!
This is the most thorough review that details the design, function, & technical aspect of the car. For the benifit of the followers pls highlight on another video the cause of carbon build up on direct injection engines and how to prevent it by way of maintenance and driving habits. Thank you and more power to this channel. An avid fan of your channelS.
ND1 owner and having owned 2 NA’s: the trunk is much smaller than the original. The plastic cowl around the outside of the windshield is a disappointment. Lack of glove box in the dash is a pain. Other than these items, the car is absolutely wonderful
@@TDF2004 Mostly yes. It's my only car and as a single I make it work. Over time, the insignificant things do annoy me though. That includes interior storage space, ingress/egress because the door opening size is small, the doors themselves are very long, and the car being low can sometimes be tricky to get into. However, even bigger sports cars still have most of these issues, which is an inescapable part of sports car ownership. Ride comfort is great and stock ride height is actually really good and I've never scraped on anything in 2 years because the overhangs are short. Gearbox is an absolute peach to use. And reliability is amazing. Not a single thing has gone wrong in 2 years. Even consumables like brake pads, tires etc are all near new probably because the car is so light. Granted, I have 12,500kms (8000 miles) on it. If you plan to use one as a daily driver, it can be done. I even do solo trips to hardware stores and Ikea in mine and Miata can take things like flatpack chairs or oil heaters. Just be aware that the lack of storage space is genuinely annoying. I ignored that fact, but it's not a reason for me to get rid of mine purely based on that reason. My cars IG page is @ takuminuri
Excellent review! I hope you'll post some maintenance videos in the future. As for the $40,000 price tag, while it may seem pricey, that is equivalent to $17-18K from 1990, when the Miata first debuted, when adjusted for inflation. The asking price on a 1990 Miata was $13,800 which is approx $32K today. Today's car is far superior and offered with the RF hard top. I still think it's a bargain.
It is NOT far superior. When Miatas debuted, it's a well known fact dealers were price gouging. It looks too much like an anime or some weird toy pokemon car(d), and is priced quite expensive regardless of inflation "conversion". Back in the day a university graduate could afford it. Not so these days. I only see bald retirees driving the new Miatas.
@@elim7228 Well, that's like, your opinion, man. But today's car is faster, more powerful, safer, more fuel efficient, cleaner burning and offers much more technology. It also offers more options. I didn't suggest what the cars were actually selling for in 1990, $13,800 was the MSRP then! You contradict yourself when you say dealers were price gouging back then but a college grad could afford one. Which is it? And why WOULDN'T we adjust the MSRP to account for inflation? If you REALLY want to get objective about it, a Miata as priced in gold in 1990 would cost you 36 ounces. Today's base MX-5 Sport would cost you only 14-15 ounces of gold. Today's car is a bargain and a better car by virtually any measure!
I enjoyed your review a lot - simple, common sense, agreeable and easy to understand. I especially enjoyed the engine room and underbody tour. Great review. Thank you!!!
THANK YOU for adding some fresh insights about the MX-5. Nearly all YT reviewers of this car endlessly repeat the same points, often using the same words. Though the MX-5 has over 30 years of refinement, and is now faster than a Jaguar XK-E, reviewers who do not know the car carry on the “cute little sports car” cliché. The ND2 is far more than that. The engine is mounted behind the front axle to balance weight distribution and reduce the polar moment of inertia by centralizing the car’s mass. The alloy cam cover is gorgeous, a nod to the classic sports car tradition of making the engine nice to look at. Today most engines are covered with an ugly piece of plastic to reduce manufacturing cost. The electronically operated variable valve timing provides a linear progression of torque and horsepower through the entire rev range, superior to Honda’s VTEK as used in the S2000, which produces a weak low end, followed by a rush of power at high revs. (Still a great car.) In development since 2013, the SkyActiv direct-injection engine was designed to minimize carbon buildup via a large oil separator under the intake manifold on the side of the block. High-volatility cheaper engine oils exacerbate carbon buildup. Provided the ND2 owner uses Mazda-specified 0W-20 full synthetic oil and changes spark plugs at specified intervals, carbon buildup should not merit inspection until well past 100 thousand miles, and it can be cleaned. Since 2019, the MX-5 has used a dual-mass flywheel, usually found only in exotics, to protect the driveline from torque pulses and torsional vibrations. The result is smoother idling and gear changes. Its featherweight design is masterful and makes the car much easier to drive in stop and go traffic. Another little detail you never hear about. Owner tip: Ignore the sound system and use wireless noise-cancelling earbuds, working through your iPhone for music playback, nav instructions, and even phone calls. You don’t have to spend $40 thousand for a new MX-5. The base Sport model comes in well under $30 thousand with cheap financing available from Mazda, and it has everything you need. I know because I own one, a 2019 ND2. It’s my fourth MX-5. The MX-5 IS genuinely fast if you want it to be, super cheap to run, getting mid-30s on the highway, with inexpensive service and legendary reliability. And it holds its value - just try finding a used Miata. If you’re not over 5’11” and do not need a back seat, there are no downsides. It’s as close to perfection as a sports car gets.
great review. I had a 1997 Miata M-edition and also comes with Speakers in the seats . Also every time you make a stop the music goes down and then you start moving and go back up all automatic. Mazda has been clever engineering for a long time.
I had a 1984 Pontiac Fiero 2M4. It had speakers in the head rests as well, and it worked great. Fieros get a bad rap for some reason, but mine was great, lots of fun and no problems. Had it from new until I donated it to the Kidney Foundation!
I just got a used 22 RF in soul red. What a machine!!!! Interesting fact. The Skyactive engine is a Miller cycle engine. These got their start in the Millennial from 20 or so years ago. This engine combines a bit of a diesel engines higher compression rate . Very cool idea
Best review I’ve ever watched. I love how you say which parts are very easy to service and which one are not. I hope you make a review also of Toyota GR 86 Sir.. 🙏🏾
The "Does it still have the magic of the original?" question in the headline was not really addressed in the video. So, I will. I had an early (May 1989 manufacture)1990 model and drove it for 20 joyous and reliable years. Loved it! Now I have a 2019 GT-S model and I love it just as much! It, too, has been reliable and a joy to drive. In between these two, I had a BMW Z4. To me, the 2019 GT-S is the best of both worlds: it has all the fun and reliability of the 1990 MX-5 and the power and luxury of the Z4 (the 2.5 V6 engine produces just 4 HP more than the 2019 GT-S, while the Z$ weighs 600 pounds more). In fact, I have owned sports cars since 1970, and the 2019 GT-S is my favorite.
I had a ‘16 club with the BBS and Brembos. Looooved it. I had the Michelin Pilot Super Sports and wow it handled. The only thing was I’m 6’ 2” and long arms, I could never fit it exactly well. Trips over 2 hours were no go. But was it fun!!! Recommended. Especially if you’re not over 6’.
@@Storm88000 that’s a nice idea. The issue too is the shift knob falls under my forearm. So I would t-Rex my arm to reach it. Not sure lowering the seat would help. Also. Size US 12.5 shoes, so had to have driving shoes in the trunk. Minor inconvenience. I would contort my foot for gas pedal. Not ideal.
I bought a 2021 RF bbs brembo and I'm not even tall (5 foot 7) and the recaro seats put parts of my back to sleep anyways. Still, I bought a 2001 Mr2 with a hardtop a month ago as a toy and it's vastly more comfortable, 200lbs lighter and albeit a lot slower (140hp minus 90k miles VS 181hp and still new). If only it was Mercedes quiet on the highway, thereby MUCH nicer speaker/music experience and got 40mpg like the mx5- I'd have no reason to hold onto the mazda. But a paid off sub 10k car still beats a 40+k car in a similar segment.. brembos or no. What's more the Mr2 can munch door dents from careless soccer moms at the mall without feeling much pain since the car has 360 degrees of removable body panels on the frame. Not many steel construction cars can claim that.
@@jonnydwolf the 2000-2005 Mr2 is definitely miata fun. I also owned the period correct competition to this car in the form of a 2004 Mx5 miata, 5 speed (also with a hardtop). they both feel equally solid but the MR2 takes the win for space and it blows all MX5s out of the water in terms of sportscar visibility out of the front windshield. (actually the 04 miata had a lot more cowl shake over large bumps. mr2 has no structural rattles at all, despite being 3 years older and 30,000 miles more than when I sold my 04 miata. The only noise is the softtop bouncing around behind me, which is silenced with a little gentle weight placed on it) Ironically it has better rear visibility as well (vs RF at least) since it lacks buttresses. One reason I bought it was because I always wanted a mid engine car and everything I researched about this made me realize it had so many edges on the miatas other than looks (personal preference there), but that isn't to say it can't be made to look nice. While it doesn't resemble a Jaguar the way the 2004 did or a Ferrari 250 the way the ND does, it definitely gives you as the driver a much better experience. I should have bought this 13 years ago.
just signed on the dot for this identical car, except soft top. I love this engine so much I bought it twice, last time was a 2012 mazda3 (first year 2.0 skyactiv came out) and it ran for 125k b4 i sold it, with zero issues.
Since I discovered your channel and subscribed a couple weeks ago YT is suggesting your older videos to me. Really liked this one. I'm blessed to own 2 Miatas. A 1996 and a 2008 (that's technically my wife's but I drive it often). I'm hoping maybe someday the Lord blesses me to own all 4 generations at the same time.
I'm such a big fan of the Miata. As a kid at the age of 15 I convinced my dad after 2 years to buy an NA. After 7 years, we still have that car. Two years ago I bought myself an NBFL, also a beautiful and nice car. Now I'm saving up to buy myself an ND and I think it will be worth every penny!!
Very good and informative video! You showed me everything that I wanted to see. My Wonderful wife just bought a Soul Red one just like this... beautiful car!
I plan to buy the RF bcs I live on the West coast ... of Scotland without a garage. 😢 After 2 MX5's - 1st had mohair top and next one regular top, I had no idea how brilliant the mohair lid was! As husband refuses to move either ancient TR's out of the garage, I've started to look at this metal top critter. You are just the BEST reviewer as I want to know more about how it all goes together and reliability. I had hoped you might have given more info on 'lid lifter' mechanics. I know I could always manage to get my soft top back in place but this mechanical top - it's reliability is a big concern and I’ve found no info on that subject. You 'did good' and I am happy I've found you! I may let you know how the right hand drive works on my MX5 ;->
I have had an ND1 2.0 litre convertible and now own an ND2 2.0 litre GT RF. Both fantastic cars, the convertible open top experience is more immersive, but the RF is more practical and quieter when the top is up. If I had a proper garage - I would have the ND2 as a convertible. Either way, this is an incredible car, superbly engineered and put together. Every day I step into it and drive it to work it makes me smile - what more can I say! P.S Car Nut - great review - oh - the car has a manual handbrake- but has a hill holder function. So when I’m traffic, just use the brake peddle until traffic moves, release brake peddle and move off. This makes the manual a breeze to drive in stop start traffic - yet another tick in the box for this car.
Great review Mr CCN! I had a 1997 1.8 mk1, the last of the pop up headlight era and that little car was fantastic fun, super reliable and made a great sound with the full stainless system. I'd love a new one but I'll be waiting for the depreciation to do it's think before I get one! Cheers :)
Having owned every model from the Mk1 can only say the ND is the best ...I love my 1.5 soft top, not keen on the RF unless the roof is up, then it looks pretty......
Got 22 rf gt machine grey and love it. Only complaints is the paint so far. Easy to scratch a specially highways driving. Fantastic review sir thank you.
Heated seats are great for us northerners during cool summer/fall nights. With our NC2 I can remember enjoying clear nights down in the 30s. With the heated seats, heat on high, and a blanket for the wife, we could keep the top down.
I own a 2012 2.0 skyactiv mazda 3. After 165k miles on 87 octane there have been no issues with the direct injection. Regularly achieve 40+ highway mpg.
Great analysis AMD. They have a "Miata club" here in WPA. I was getting breakfast & about 20-30 cars were meeting in a parking lot to go somewhere so I guess owners are pretty serious.
For me. One of the best think in my ND Miata is the fact that I can open and close the top in 2 secs at speeds up to 35mph. So any trip, even to the local shop down the road I can drive top down… I wouldn’t bother with RF. Another think. I can drive 120mph with top down no problem…. open RF is simply too loud. I drive the car all year round…. winter, summer. Anyway. I have watched several of your videos and I appreaicate your content. Since I also own Lexus GS…. I am a new subscriber.
I used to have a 21 and traded it in for more than I paid for it- This car is not for everyone, its like driving in a shoe box down a set of stairs...does not take bumps well, has harsh road noise, and the passenger is constantly annoyed by the catalytic converter bump out that takes up leg room.
Love your videos! I watch them end to end even though I am not looking for a car! If you ever start making car care tutorial videos like oil changes, filter changes, brake and transmission maintenance etc, I would love to binge on them. I know theres a ton of em out there but would be a game changer if you do it
Nice car, but I’ll take the NC, hard top convertible! Nicest little sports road car with very little power I’ve ever driven. I like the hardtop, it’s harder to vandalize……. It’s like flying in a Zero, fast, maneuverable, lightly armored and it is easy to shoot down. It is a lot of fun….
ND RF owner here - I cannot recommend this car enough. It's an absolute pleasure to drive, never had so much fun behind a wheel before. If fun is your goal, do not hesitate. But I will note some issues: 1) near to no space (you already can see its tiny) so its not very practical. 2) be cautious when its raining, keep windows closed and just watch out for water dripping in through the window and door when its open. It can drench your shoulder in no time! 3) stone chips seem to be common on the paint, especially the black model. 4) im not entirely sure if this is down to the previous driver or not, but the windscreen has a LOT of tiny chips and nicks. I've never seen a car with so many, especially for its age (2017 plate). Other than that, it's a brilliant car and I absolutely love it. Also personal note, seeing the roof come down on the RF is some majestical shit. Amazing engineering from Mazda
*Amount of windscreen chips are not unusual for any Interstate-driven car, particularly west of the Mississippi. Only takes one 80 MPH run on I-40 or through construction debris around Dallas. @@blackrifle6736 That's the one! It's my worst pet peeve when you get overtaken and they cut right in front of you, like leave some space please. Seems to be a common thing in the UK, as no one understands that stone chips are on the roads
Great review and valuable professional mechanical overview. I do disagree with 2 minor points. I have a ND MX5 which I love to drive. I’m 82 and 6 foot and have no trouble getting in or out , and I don’t like touch screens because most drivers take their eyes off the road to use them.
I hate that to change radio settings you have to do it on the crappy screen. I would pry that thing off if I could, Love my NC, but won't move up to the ND2, which I have studied up on, until the screen can be folded down. It is something I'd never look at.
I have heard you talk about carbon build up on other reviews as well and wondering if besides regular oil changes, what else can be done to prevent build up, are there fuel additives you recomend or a service to do, I feel like you leave us hanging, and one of the things I love about your reviews is your attention to detail, so can you elaborate on this point please? Javi G.
I have a 2017 miata RF and I looooove it. the engine in the 2017-2018 model is different than 2019-present, and it's got a low of low end torque. it's such a great car and handles amazingly
Correct. The 2016-2018 is better for driving around town and stuff. 2019 and up though really makes a difference if you drive competitively like at the track and stuff. No comparison.
@@Storm88000 Incorrect. 2019 engine update is just better, it did not sacrifice anything. It increased torque across much the RPM range without lowering it anywhere. Maybe down around 2000 RPM where you wouldn't normally drive anyway. Even In low RPM gear tests (80-120KMh, 2000-3000RPM) the ND2 was still a bit quicker.
@@peterscott2662 so I have driven both - and my friend's ND1 just seems like it doesnt have to be revved out in each gear to get up to speed- at least as much as the ND2. I know that the ND2 actually has a few ft lbs more of torque, but I think you have to look at the curve and what RPM that torque is available
Mazda is a up and coming brand. I like this car … it’s like you say “ simple” … old school features… I think it’s a nice balance between technology and simplicity. And it’s comes in manual.
What an excellent review. I had a 2016 Miata GT and now I have a 2023 soul red GT with soft top. I did have to use the flat tire kit due to a puncture and it works great and comes with good instructions. I have to replace only the liquid with after market product. Love driving the car.
I had a 1994 black Miata that I purchased in 2013 from the original owner she kept it in a garage it only had 57,000 miles on it when I bought it. She only drove it to the beach once a year. After replacing the tires some of the seals and the top I had a very good car I even had the original window sticker. The plastic was still on the floor from the dealer. I wish I would’ve never sold that car I really miss it
The dials are the best feature of Mazda's infotainment. it makes navigation super easy when driving. for touch screen its very difficult to navigate while driving as you need to shift eyes on the infotainment to navigate whereas the dials makes it so easy that you dont even need to look for certain navigations.
Everyone who is a car person and who doesn't care that it's a two-seater and cannot accommodate much stuff should consider one. My uncle had a midlife crisis and got one. He did race the NA Miata and his Civic hatch in Seattle before.
I own one of these. I can confirm the cool things this guy is pointing out. This vehicle is one of the best cars ever made. Hands down.
I like that in the RF the rollbar is low enough, so that when you flip over and hang in the belts, the rollbar doesnt prevent your head from getting smashed by concrete like a potato. You wouldnt want to have a fighting chance in an accident in a miata would you.

I've had five convertibles in a row and it is perfectly all right to cheat with the heater when it's cold outside... top down baby, top down!
Every mile with the top up is a mile wasted.
There are two
kinds of people in the world. Those that want a Miata and those that have never driven one.
I listen to the radio...a lot. Real antennas provide a much better signal than the shark fin alone or the antenna molded into the front or back windows.

Best sports car under 100k. Best new car on the market
Doesn’t help that not even the sales people know where the trunk button is. I had to read the manual to find that out on my ‘22. Was driving me nuts.

Is it a good car for daily driving?

(Still a great car.)
In development since 2013, the SkyActiv direct-injection engine was designed to minimize carbon buildup via a large oil separator under the intake manifold on the side of the block.
I am 6'1"and fit in just fine. Even my son who is 6'3"likes to steal my Miata whenever possible.
Thanks for helpful info. There too is a bonus on having a 2-seater: only one grandchild can come with ya at a time! [ hope to give it to her one day]
great review. I had a 1997 Miata M-edition and also comes with Speakers in the seats . Also every time you make a stop the music goes down and then you start moving and go back up all automatic. Mazda has been clever engineering for a long time.
What a refreshing pleasure to see a proper technical perspective in a review, great, thanks 👍
I just finished watching your review of the CX90 and its crazy how serviceability of this vehicle is easier and less complicated
Finally! thank you for going over the maintenance aspect of the car. Often times that critical information is left out for us to figure out later on.
15:08 it's a multi-link suspension, not double wishbone like the front suspension.
2019 and up got a telescoping steering wheel. Also Paco motor sports makes seat lowering brackets for both driver and passenger seats that would help
@@twrcrew8852 I wonder about a 2000-200?ish MR2. I got a new 2000 celica GTS instead back then, lot of fun, not Miata fun.
The only noise is the softtop bouncing around behind me, which is silenced with a little gentle weight placed on it)
Ironically it has better rear visibility as well (vs RF at least) since it lacks buttresses.
Best review about the nd yet, no bias, makes it easy to make up your own opinion about it and the opinion is that this is a very good car!
Keeping it simple seems to be a theme for Mazda engineers. Other brands could seriously get on board with that. I'm sold.
Oops I did it 3 month ago! Yes you definitly should. I love it.
Wonderful driver centered review. No BS, just the facts.
Wonderful review, every time I see this car it brings a smile to my face, your review was spot on! Thank you
Thank you for the short cup holder part, I found it funny how people are obsessed with having many of them.
Too late, already bought one and am watching now.
Great review. Very thorough. Thanks!
Didn't think I wanted an RF until I saw it in this color with the Terracotta seats....
Really looks elegant.
Seat speakers were on my friends 1984 Pontiac Fiero. Took Mazda 4 decades to catch up, but I like it.
I just know I will get one one day. Great video buddy 👍
Same! Maybe soon as next year if I find the heart to trade in my current Mazda 6 which I love :(
These cars are so good. I'm happy these exist.
Best video I’ve seen on the ND Miata , I agree it’s a delight to drive and wrench on this car
If I were to buy one, this is the color. Beautiful
There is an exterior trunk release, it's a button above the license plate under the bumper lip! Also, loved the in depth review!
❤️Best Roadster on market currently ❤️Made for the mass with class ❤️
Idk where you've been lately, but 40K is pretty cheap for a car in 2022, especially one that's borderline popular/enthusiast-oriented.
I got the exact car model n color. Really enjoying my weekend toy.
But I will note some issues:
1) near to no space (you already can see its tiny) so its not very practical.
On my third in 20 years and 220k Miles. Sparklies are getting annoying so number four coming soon. Cheers!*
@@blackrifle6736 That's the one! It's my worst pet peeve when you get overtaken and they cut right in front of you, like leave some space please. Seems to be a common thing in the UK, as no one understands that stone chips are on the roads
@@cctrno *Ah, that's a separate point of aggravation. Pity is, they do not think of that because they do not care. Cheers!*
"... some majestical shit". Love it 😂👍
Brake line touching the body.. Not good.. 😢
I love that it has a brace under the front and under the back to jack the car up and put it on jack stands.
*Braces are there for improved chassis stiffness, but yeah.*
Is it a good car to daily drive?
@@peterscott2662 so I have driven both - and my friend's ND1 just seems like it doesnt have to be revved out in each gear to get up to speed- at least as much as the ND2. I know that the ND2 actually has a few ft lbs more of torque, but I think you have to look at the curve and what RPM that torque is available
Mazda is a up and coming brand. I like this car … it’s like you say “ simple” … old school features… I think it’s a nice balance between technology and simplicity. And it’s comes in manual.
*Yep. An up and coming brand since at least 1969 in USA. Cheers!*
