I have a question how do u know when its the head gasket or bad piston rings ?
if it's bad piston rings it would be in the oil, not the coolant
Scotty Kilmer
greetings Mr Kilmer
I have a question on my windstar 2002, today i change my spark plugs and when i took of the #3 spark plug i heard something pouring out of the spark plug hole, well it was water , engine previously has been working fine and after i change the sparks today it started with no problem. Any guess of what might be?
Thanks !
Just wanted to say I've learned more useful mechanic tips from this car guy than any other ever on RUclips. And all without hearing some annoying music in the background.. GENIUS

Wow,...only 49 years?

You know Scotty? Everytime I type anything on Google about my car.. a video of you comes up. Love you man, thank you!
12 years later he’s still the man
Nice test kit. I've always done it old school by pulling the oil dipstick and checking it for chocolate milk as it were. As well as hydrocarbons in the coolant. That test kit seems to let one know way before the coolant does. What a time saver.
Sure the tester is great but knowing what to look for without it is worth mentioning.
Not everybody is a mechanic or enthusiast either so showing how to do things without the special tool is often overlooked by people that have a lot of tools and like tools.
I mean I have spark testers at home but I don't carry them, it's not like you can't test for spark more crudely...
Normally I like milkshakes, the kind you mention...not so much.
I like this channel, I'm just saying in general people with a lot of tools often don't mention how you do something on the road with less tools...
I once removed my license light with pigtail wires to use as a test light instead of just being helpless or waiting for a friend to take to the store to get a test light or multimeter.
A perfect example is if you have a multimeter you tend to use it even for things a test light, crude or otherwise would suffice for.
I worry that old useful knowledge is slipping away even if in your example that's a late symptom...
It's still good to look at your coolant and oil regularly...
I'll give an example, I had to fix some trailer lights and didn't have a test light, multimeter or vehicle with trailer light plug so I used an old school battery charger to send current down the wires one by one to find my problem using a nail and a piece of wire clamped in the alligator clips...more people own a battery charger or jumper cables for that matter than multimeters/VOMs...
I've done that too used jumper cables to test trailer lights and a wire or two and a nail...
Even when you own that stuff do you keep it in your car?
Warning new school battery chargers have to sense some current to put out current so they won't work for this!
Why not just hook up trailer to vehicle?
Maybe you want to see which has the problem?
Maybe you are looking at a used trailer driving your non-tow vehicle...and so on ...
Even when you have special tools, and I have some, at home it's good to know how to proceed without them...steal a wire from a noncritical system or a hose or jump something...
You don't McGyver stuff so much when in a fully stocked shop...
Even with mechanics I see this but I don't have the proper tools attitude as if people didn't do it without some of those in the past...
I'm not criticizing you at all I guess I just wanted to spout off...
a few months back you pointed me to this video about my mysterious coolant loss in my 5.3L Tahoe, turns out the head gaskets were fine but turns out the heads were made by a company called "Castech" which are apparently known for being defective. The dealer is going to replace my entire motor with a new one for some reason but it's only costing me $100. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Scotty.
Are they aluminum?
Pierre Topeze i have something similar but in this case is the oil its a blu oil.
Scotty Kilmer is the number one mechanic on RUclips. Fact.
Its awesome to see you have kept up with online help for everyone for over 10 years+ Keep it going Scotty!
Make sure engine is cold when removing radiator cap! Otherwise you could be badly burned as the system is under pressure to prevent coolant from boiling. Use a rag when removing cap and open it slowly-just to be on the safe side.
been there , done that..overnight in the hospital for it
Engine was hot, but didn't seem to be under pressure. Guess my engine is deadmeat.
Or you can just loosen the cap a little and let it depressurise then remove it
@dcareyHQvideos
Same problem but my radiator was broken
Literally just fucked myself

I agree, I have subbed. I like how the videos are not ridiculously long and don't ramble. Absolutely straight to the point, no nonsense :)
Scotty Kilmer what if it doesn't start & will this work on a motorbike ??? same principle I guess
5TRYD4
it works on any internal combustion engine, but if the engine does not start, you would have to do a compression test instead as no Co2 would be created to show the leak
Scotty Kilmer thanks awesome advice, just have to figure out how to do a compression test on my vn750 :))
Thank again Scotty!
how many poor fools have been robbed by crooked mechanics.. you are so refreshing to the field of mechanics! I hope youre blessed times 10 for all youve done!

Would be a smart idea.
It's really easy to tell without the kit. I also want to say you get what you pay for.
I don't think the seller will let you do all this on his car xD
Jay Funny Don't forget to bring a cigar to check for vacuum leaks. lol
just feel the top radiator hose after a drive, if its very hard then theres a fault, if its soft then its good
Scotty, I gotta give it to you. Your a genius man. I told you about an issue and you were 100% correct. The Infiniti dealership told me exhaust fumes were mixing with the coolant and ruining my car. I purchased something new and couldn't be happier. Thanks Scotty.
normally a blown head gasket, BUT leaking intake manifold gasket can do that as can worn piston rings or valve seals causing oil burning
Thank you, Scotty. Your videos are so informative and easy to understand for a non-mechanic like myself.
I love this guy. I used to watch random vids just bc they are so entertaining. Now I find a video bc I need it. Props to you good sir, your content is much appreciated.

I love how happy you sounded when the car revealed it was blown haha! Love your vids man, very helpful!
actually they come in many colors now, it's just a dye. the difference is whether it's an oat coolant, like toyota, or an IAT coolant, like the green stuff. The oats last longer and corrode less.
Hi Scotty, I have a corolla 16 valve A5 engine . last night i drove it and just realized later that my manifold was as red as a Charcoal. what may be the cause ?
Hi scott, I just wanted to tell you this video helped me out quite a bit. I was sure my issue was a blown head gasket and I'd have to trash my car but the block test was clean! Now I'm relieved but still lost.

Best mechanic ever!! YOU'RE AWESOME SCOTTY!
Scotty I love your channel, you provide a great service to society. One weird and hard to diagnose head gasket queen is the Northstar GM premium V8, I am sure you already know this but it will not be as obvious as a Chevy or Ford. The Caddys with this nightmare have become so numerous with this failure the cars are almost free because no dealer will have them. Had 2 of them before going with Lincoln Mercury after 25 years with Cadillac's.
yep, that's normally it. You can do this test unless it runs, but you can do a compression test to see if it's blown
he deserves to be on TV... give this man a grammy award😂💯
You have the best car repair vids on RUclips, Scotty.
Excellent video Scotty!!! Definitely making things easier for the guys that are doing this stuff under the shade tree... Thanks again!!
hahhah it's funny how kilmer does videos by himself and they're better than so called professional training videos hahhaaha. too much bla bla blah Kilmer goes right le point.
YEAH, RIGHT ON MAN, ON ANOTHER CHANNEL THIS VIDEO WOULD HAVE BEEN AT LEAST 15 MIN+ :))))
2001 Honda Civic head gasket
he's really good at presenting and editing.
Yep!
this guy is like magic. quick easy cheap solutions to almost anything.
pressure test the cooling system first, often those plastic radiators just come apart at the seams.
first, do this test to see if head gasket is blowning, and if so, try some steel seal. If not, worn valve seals can do that too, and you'd just live with that
Dude I wish you were my all time mechanic !!Can't trust nobody really anymore unless you have a good friend !that knows what he is doing and is honest ....
do my video tests "how to fix an overheating car" first, especially the pressure test to see what is exactly leaking.
they all have pressure caps somewhere, you add it in that reservoir
Love your videos better then any I have seen. keep it up cause I'd rather fix my own car then to spend thousands on a mechanic that just wants to take my money instead of fixing my car,or telling me that other things are wrong when I know there is nothing wrong.
PFFF!!!! crazy dude just pops out of the tail gate at the end HAHAHA!
if you took the manifold off without emptying the coolant first, it will leak in places while taking it apart.
Ha! Trunk and Tail Gate outro gets me every time!😆😆🔧
the dude so funny every time he came right from the back of the pick up car
You entrances are great. Like 2:13. Next you're gonna be repelling down from the roof or some shit.

I remember when I was told I had a blown head gasket, I nearly passed out. I would have rather been told I had a terminal illness...
Mine blew out on an intersection, fucking sucked. I was 2 blocks from work. Coolant was all in my oil, white smoke...embarrassing. Bittersweet now have a new car.
This how I feel as of now
Lmao!!!
Don't trust dealership. They told me I had a blown gasket it was actually a bad water pump. Shameful trying to rip off a poor senior citizen 👹
@@Z3sty367 what did u do when you blew it can you just change the engine heads and it should be good?
Scotty Kilmer, you are the fucking man. I recommend you to all of my friends.
You deliver true, academically correct mechanical information in a concise and very approachable manner. I hope you make money off of what you do, because the people you've surely saved during tough financial times, fixing their own cars, makes you a true asset to our society as a whole.
Hat's off sir
never trust anyone with a broken engine, the damage inside can be VERY large and you wouldn't know until it was stripped down and analyzed. And the test kit shows an internal engine problem, but it can be a blown head gasket, cracked head, warped block, lots of really expensive things. I personally would not buy it unless you were willing to do a full engine rebuild with that mileage on it.
Thanks
Omg !!!! Scotty you've come so far! The quality lol!!

$60 well spent! Better than $150 for a dealer diagnoses.
Yeah like if the dealership will let you walk off without an "unnecessary engine overhaul" hahaha props mate!
you can rent this tester at autozone for free! even the fluid is free!
juck huo thanks for that info heading there in the AM
You can also rent a torque wrench, serpentine belt tool, and have your battery and alternator tested for free. You technically have to buy the tools, but you get a full refund, including tax, when you return them.
@@kylandaminick13 your a life saver
yes, chipping ecus is often a big mistake. To correctly do so, a dyno and a five gas analyzer is needed to make sure it's programmed correctly for the engine set up. Find a guy with one of those and start there, a BIG reason I advise people against doing such mods.
About time somebody shows the proper way to check for a head gasket leak
is there a difference in what kit you use depending on if your combustion gasses are coming from gasoline or diesel?
no, same test, both produce co2 which the kit measures
Is it still an accurate reading if you do it on a car that has a overflow I can't get to my radiator so I have to do it at the overflow bottle.
How can you not love this guy.
Scotty you are overdue for a national TV show. Drop me a PM and I'll tell you why. BTW great content!!!!
+Joseph Safuto I used to do TV, TV is a load of horseshit most of the time. RUclips RULES, I'm staying here
+Scotty Kilmer I think I might have sent this twice. I was the producer for A&E on the show called mind freak starring Criss Angel. For three years. Also involved in the Cosby show many years ago. Still think you got what it takes to do something over the top even though I know TV is bullshit sometimes the bullshit could be fun :-) what you do you do well and you make it entertaining thank you.

Joe Monti Safuto I hope not, he’s going to get hurt

Hi Scotty kilmer I jus wanted to know is seafoam cleaner really good, or bad for some cars. I have a 94 Toyota celica and its been sitting out for about 4 years and I've been trying to get it back to its glory since I'm the new owner. I changed the oil a few times but it still comes out dark like black almost, I even changed my oil pan. I jus wanted to know if seafoam really works, and should I use it????? Thank you for taking the time to read this.
P.s I was doing research about seafoam and seeing different ways people have done it but I wanted to ask you and anybody's opinion in this situation.
I am not a seafoam fan, and if you change the oil regularly color means nothing, but if you're really worried, use a bottle of engine flush, then change the oil and filter to get rid of blackness
Aww man thank you bro YOU ARE GREAT
Have you seen bad effects from seafoam?
the day when the back latch door falls off that truck XD
Scotty you've helped me like 12 times already I may need you again on a spark issue or a compression issue thanks
i got an easyer method works 9 times out of 10 start your engine with the radiator cap off if u see smoke puffin and shit flyin out there u go and then pull your plugs
how long would you leave the car running for
he said 30 minutes
Several minutes until the thermostat opens up
This is the channel for people who think they can, there is so much more to being a good mechanic than what Scotty says....
My question is why not make head gaskets better
Save money.... But when u do have to change the gasket buy a quality one fel pros are good
an old engine called an offenhauser (miller) had no head gasket
My car blew up. I don't know what to do. Should I pour gasoline on it?
yea ur best bet to fix that problem would be gasoline.. but not before u get full coverage insurance on it..
+YeahWeRepTheSameSmartech Yea it worked. Now I drive my car frame. Cool isn't it? It is only one cent to keep it insured.
+Kidvette2004 not funny...

So i have a 1987 nissan d21 pickup, and i just replace the head gasket... had the head machined before re installing... still getting alot of white smoke from the tail pipe and running poorly when accelerating... any ideas would be helpful... thank you...
head could have been cracked or the block. BUT, give it a week of driving, they can smoke that long until stuff burns off the rebuild work
It's almost been a week, how's your vehicle doing?
Scott your the man! Couldn't even tell you how many times I refer your channel!
Mr. Kilmer, would you say a car losing coolant is a bad head gasket? i see water dripping out the exhaust pipe and the water feels cold but i'm not sure if it's actually coolant or not.
all cars throw some water out the exhaust, that's normal. If you don't lose coolant in the radiator, ignore it
Scotty Kilmer Thanks for the advice Scotty, by the way what's your opinion if I have some tainted coolant in the reservoir? I tried a bottle of that Prestone flush but it came back again after I changed the coolant.
Ive learned to do coolant flush whenever I buy a car first thing (I check it out before buying!) ...and I'll change thermostat and gasket first thing too, so I know how new it is. People seem to not even think about the cooling system...
Get a dab of it on ur finger. If its sweet its coolant
Jordon Regan coolant is very poisonous DO NOTTTTTT drink or taste coolant/antifreeze!!

I got this tester on sale on amazon for 30 bucks, do that
nice funny way to give information.. I watch each second.. good luck..
I think if you took like .25secs out of all your cuts and it will flow a little better
Another great video.
I didn't do this but now I know the symptoms of a blown head gasket.
I learned back in the mid-'70s that if you could smell an unusually very sweet smell coming from the tail pipe and your vehicle ran hot, this indicated a blown head gasket, and/or cracked or warped head. Remember, the sweet smell is the burning of the coolant which is leaking into the combustion cycle.
Mean Mr Mustard my car has been running hot and my coolant has been disappearing but it doesn’t have any leasks, I also overheated my car twice so that might have blown the head gasket
@@dannymontes5305 You also might have warped the head(s) or even caused a crack in one of the coolant passage ways in the head(s). Sounds like you need to check the heads and install a new head gasket, if not more.
You popping out of the gate at the end of the video, just makes my day :D. Seen it in other of your videos.
A must have for any Northstar motor!
Love your enthusiasm Scotty
Quick, concise and easy to understand. Thanks for the video.
Lol. I have watched a ton of your videos. Your work on a lot of Toyotas! I would swear you worked at a Toyota dealership. Basically one in every video. Your good, I work at a Toyota dealership as a tech, not many guys like you out there with common sense. Keep up the good work!
Scotty, you are a gift. Thank you for your videos!
You always make my day Scotty I learn a lot from videos.
I friggen loved this video. Now just to double check the science and then see if I want to order.
You the man ! Compression came back good cleaned the injector then went out but now I know it was the injector :)
I am a very old man and I used the tried and true method of detecting a blown head gasket. I would warm the engine up just a little and remove the radiator cap and If I saw a constant stream of bubbles in the radiator I had a good guess that a head gasket was blown with exhaust gases getting mixed into the engine block coolant, but I think that Scotty's method is far superior to my ancient technique.
