You're right 100%, I flushed the original transmission fluid in my fiancées Mercury Sable with 200k. Fluid changes should be based on the condition. It was black but not burned and didn't have particles in the fluid. I dropped the pad and changed the fluid and filter 4 times over the course of 2 months. She has no issues with it slipping or losing gears and all the fluid is brand new and bright red now. She's been driving it everyday for over a year. Go by the fluid condition not the mileage. Now I change the fluid and filter once a year

Tell that to my in-laws... ugh. My MIL who know jack about cars essentially yelled at me when I insisted that transmissions needed fluid changed too. 😩. Her mechanic (according to her) that she would trust with her first born apparently instructed her that it would just cause it to fail and had MANY that drive and we’re “fine” before and wouldn’t drive out of the shop. So he refuses to even do the service any more.. SO frustrating. She does have a car with 210k on it too. Guess what. It is a celica.. 🤣

Yeah people are dumb. I have a Honda Accord with 515,651 miles on it. Original engine and automatic transmission. I have spilled and filled the transmission every 20K miles since the car was new. That’s about $750 dollars in fluid over the transmissions life. She still shifts fine and can’t say great it hesitates just enough to notice going into 3 but nothing horrible. So $750 dollars over 19 years is worth it to not have to drop at $1500 to send off the transmission to be rebuilt. That’s doing the pull out and drop in myself.

(most dealers don't strip n rebuild stuff nowadays, the labour charges are usually more than a recon unit *before adding parts* so they sell you a new/recon unit) best thing is to take it to a specialist who can strip-repair-rebuild.-and are usually cheaper than a recon unit.

      @glennjohn3919 4 года назад +17

@@luisx333 I was just quoting what Scotty said. If you have never changed your tranny fluid I'd say don't. The only thing probably causing friction in your transmission that allows shifting is the gritty fluid. Metal shavings become a part of contaminated fluid overtime if it hasn't been changed. Since your transmission has been shifting in this environment for so long, it's likely they only thing that's keeping it going. If you want to know for sure, have a mechanic check the fluid (I'm guessing Altima models these days have closed off transmissions like my versa), if it's black and tar like, I wouldn't change it, if you do it's more than likely going to slip. I have a versa at 140k, and I made the same mistake of never changing it. Check ChrisFix's video on the subject if you want more specifics.

This is usually the case for transmissions. I do a partial change anywhere from once to 3 times a year but try and never miss one. Also I keep a watch on the fluid. But if you ignore changing the fluid even as a partial change by the time you notice problems its too late and changing the fluid will just break it right away. Waiting till 100k to worry about your transmission fluid means that you wont have a transmission soon. A friend ignored his for 3 years and just did a full change. Fluid was black and his transmission quick working the same day. It was a Toyota too. If he would at least did a partial change once a year it would still be working maybe not peek but still working. Some time during the past 3 years that fluid broke all the way down and quit protecting the transmission. Lost all of its lubrication and also its ability to protect the transmission when it got hot. It started its slow death when that happened and changing the fluid was akin to taking it off of life support.

The fluid will always work, it's just that the higher the mileage goes, the lower the temperature it can operate at without failing. You may never even reach that reduced operating temperature ceiling, it depends what and how you drive it. Putting on an external trans cooler, for example, would keep you below that danger temp. Change it before 100,000 miles or don't bother, is the popular consensus on what he's talking about.

Yup, two weeks before the first owner's spouse died, the lady was wrote a ticket for 85 in a 65. Yup, Long Green was fast and faster stock. Long Green, when I bought her took off in Turbo 350 2nd gear. I called Summit Racing and ordered an oil filter adapter to be plugged in to the cooler line. That dang thing did wonders! I had all three gears in six days and changed the Ford style filter and had firm shifts! The dipstick went from red with questionable gray stui to a nice fresh ATF fresh red! And no manual first gear, she did it on her own!!!!
Side note, I bought her 10yrs after the odometer quit working.... Factor that!

The transmission will stop shifting or slips if you are low on fluid. The clutches may burn and you have to rebuild it.

Worked for 45 years as a Master Technician, specializing in Drive line repair. I have changed Fluid and filter, and have done Flushes on lots of Automatic transmissions with dirty fluid. One has to identify the Condition of the Fluid and Performance of the Automatic transmission before Service. If the Fluid smells burnt in any way, you have internal problems, if the fluid is dark from use and not Burnt, it can be serviced with no damage to the unit. Again, correct diagnosis of Fluid condition and transmission performance is the key to a Successful transmission service.

Hi Scotty! I absolutely love your videos! I have a 1996 Toyota Corolla DX. It has 160000 miles on it with the original engine and automatic transmission. It’s been such a good car and I would like it to last as long as possible. I’ve never changed the transmission fluid and I don’t think the previous owner did either. I didn’t know that was part of basic maintenance until I discovered your wonderfully educational videos. I have a question for you and would greatly appreciate your opinion on what to do. Should I completely change the fluid, use the Lucas transmission stop slip as you suggested in one of your videos,or just leave it alone? She still shifts like a dream. There’s no kind of problem with the transmission as far as I can tell expect the fluid is black Thank you very much for all the free information you’re providing!!!

Have you tried 3 transmission drain/fill services in one month without Lucas? I would POSSIBLY consider that, and you can add Lucas 3 months later if the slipping issues are still there...but that might fix it.

I "flush" my wife's automatic txmission via 1. replacing fluid first then, 2. draining the coolant lines while idling, with constant pour of fluid in. run 'er till it runs clean out the coolant lines. 3. stop engine. replace coolant lines, then fill to proper level. works great, gets nearly all of the fluid out of the torque converter, etc. oh yea, my cars are manual. but this works great on wifes car.

Hi SCOTTY, I really appreciate the vast knowledge you impart. I consult you videos for ALL my doubts. How about this source of worry verging on panic: The previous owner of my Hilux SW4 automatic 2008 had been driving with a fluid excess of over 2 litres, and I don't know for how long. I've syphoned out this amount and the transmission seems to be working OK, but can you tell me what may happen in terms of damage in the medium to long term ?

I just got my uncle's 1997 maxima, with 69,000 miles, my first car! I assumed the fluid was original. No record of it in the service manual. Thankfully it has a dipstick :)
Fluid was dirty, but still red in color and not bad. It would shift too hard and inconsistently, so i changed it! Now it shifts like a dream, and ill continue to change it every 60k. Glad i caught it and it was relatively low mileage!
    Love your videos Scotty.

I've got a 2012 Genesis, 93,8XX miles on it. Just purchased it and I dont think the previous owner did a transmission service (took great care of the care in general, though). I'm wondering if 94,000 would put it in the 'danger zone' or am I still safe to do a drain and fill without worrying about revealing damage?

I have a -97 Volvo 960 with about 185.000 miles on it. I'm the second owner and it has full service history since new. However already in the 90s Volvo said the transmission fluid was good for life so it hasn't been changed in 22 years. They probably didn't expect the car to live so long. I checked the color of the fluid and it's not black, more like brownish-red. Would changing it now be dangerous for the transmission?

This is a really one of those "it depends" kinds of situation. As Mr. Kilmer notes, if replacing the transmission makes it fail, it was failing anyway. As a counter-example, I recently came in possession of a 20 year old Honda that had 100K miles and the transmission fluid (I believe) was never changed. Shifts were okay, not stellar. Since it was a Honda, I bought a case of Honda brand transmission fluid and did four (4) changes over 2 weeks to ensure that I replaced most of the brown stuff that was in there. By the 4th refill,t he transmission was working like new. The key was Honda brand transmission fluid and replacing several times to get every trace of the old fluid out. I did a full tune-up and the car now runs like new.

    • @RockandrollNegro

Honda Automatic Transmissions don't function like traditional automatics. They're unique in that they don't utilize planetary gears, and are basically a highly refined version of the old clutchless semiauto gearbox found on the Honda Cub. If you were to put conventional ATF in a typical Honda automatic, the friction modifiers would acidically eat away at the the hydraulic clutch packs within a few thousand shifts.
Honda transmission fluid is basically manual gearoil with Type F characteristics. It's closer to something like hydraulic jack oil than it is Dexron or Mercon.

@@marklowry1979 You should only use Honda transmission fluids in Honda's. Same with Acura's. The transmissions are not the best as it is so best not make them worst. Also they explicitly say to use only Honda transmission fluid for Hondas and Acuras.

This was my experience with my Sprinter as well, it shifted poorly, I changed out the long overdue black fluid, and then it started working almost like new. Not changing fluid is basically an active decision to murder your transmission.
