    I am very impressed with the new Apollo Lake architecture. This computer is a tremendous value and delivers outstanding performance for its class. The $215 price tag includes a Windows license, 2GB of RAM, and a 32GB of EMMC storage.
    Installing a second stick of RAM will offer a good speed boost especially for graphically intense activities like games and video editing. There are two RAM slots and a full notebook size SATA adapter and mounting bracket inside the case.
    The NUC is not fanless but I rarely heard it. The fan is among the quietest I've seen in a small PC like this.
    I was surprised by its gaming performance, delivering 30 fps in Counterstrike GO with settings turned way down at 1080p. Emulators for modern systems also worked better than expected.
    All in there's definitely some innovation still happening with PCs at the low end of the market. The Apollo Lake chip in the NUC6CAYS is a good improvement over last year's generation.

    Warning: MEMORY UPGRADE SHOWN IN VIDEO IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH Intel Nuc NUC6CAYS
    If you try upgrade the memory with the sticks shown in video (Crucial CT51264BF160B), you will get an "Unsupported 1Gb or 2Gb Density Error" while booting. The architecture requires 4 rectangular chips/stick instead of 8 square chips.

    Just started using the barebones version of this NUC with a 240GB SSD, 8GB of RAM, and Ubuntu 18.04 installed. A couple of minor teething errors here and there as I'm trying to get used to Linux, but so far, I am extremely impressed with its performance.

    Great reviews off these low power devices, but I miss one imprtant thing and that is power consumption. A little power test would be nice. Just a simple read out from a simple power meter is fine.
    The power values you fnd in the specifications are in general not really usuable.

    • @PoeLemic
      @PoeLemic 7 лет назад

      That's a good point. Using something like the Kill-A-Watt is what I use. It has really helped me lower all of the power consumption in my house. That little $15 dollar device has saved me HOW MUCH I DO NOT KNOW ...

    I'm looking forward to getting one of these when the i3 version comes out. I've been considering one for some time, but now that they're coming out with their next generation of them, im doing my best to hold off. Hopefully it won't be much past the end of the month before they come out.

    I bought this and returned it. It ran fine, but I could not get it to boot into the recovery partition. I like to fiddle with these things too much, not be able to restore to factory.
    Next, I ordered the barebones. (same unit $159) With it I bought a 525 GB ssd. I had 2x2 gb of the proper memory so I am using them. Win 10 pro key was about $50 and download OS from Microsoft.
    Running Happauge TV tuner USB. I like to watch, pause, and record live tv OTA.
    Kill-a-watt: 1.1 watt, unit off. Boot about 14 watt. About six at idle. 10 watt playing 1080p video through WD passport hdd.
    Playing same video while tv tuner operating was about 18 watts, and neither stuttered. (your mileage may vary)
    The emmc 32gb drive on the windows unit, used in this review is slower than 2.5 ssd and the 2 GB ram would likely be replaced, anyway.
    I have just over $350 in it with my old memory and have windows 10 pro. And enough drive space to be comfortable.

    • @Prez808
      @Prez808 7 лет назад

      How did you get Windows 10 Pro for $50? It is nowhere near that on their website for even the Home version.

      Kinguin, for the key. It activated ok and if you pay about $5 they guarantee it. (worth it)

    Loved your review. I only wish that they would put in (maybe) a M2 / NVMe port and/or another Sata3. I always do one Sata3 for OS and other for Programs / Games, and all of us my stuff flies. But, one single port is (somewhat) limiting unless you don't really use this for much other than just streaming and/or light use.

  • @jetjazz05

    Had a "Kangaroo" computer that had an Intel Atom chip, the processor was more than adequate to play back my videos since I'm only running 1080p files, but the ram was only 2gb and the built in ssd was 32gb. I was literally to the point where windows 10 was not installing updates because the 32gb wasn't enough, and I really only had chrome and some software to play back my video files on it (so less than 500mb of additional software on the device). Anyways it finally had some kind of catastrophic failure and I bought this NUC here, I'll probably regret it since it's now November of 2017, but until I have a device I won't be able to play anything, waiting until they release a new version of the NUC isn't in the cards. Anyways I think this NUC will be more than adequate for my needs especially since I've gotten a 128gb SSD and 8gb of ram to put in this. Way better than what I was using before which was adequate 90% of the time anyways.
    Thanks for all the detailed info on this system, really useful.

    for some reason, I have not been able to get the NUC to display (via HDMI) on the Samsung TV (UN60KU630), I am not sure if I need to do something to the TV (I did reset the TV and try setting it up again, nothing). Or adjust the NUC display properties, not sure. Could be that I actually need a 2.0 HDMI cable, will pick one up later (seems dubious, but I'll give it a try.)

    Suppose to support HD audio formats right out of the box. But Intel has a history of not getting this to work under Windows. Scroll down to section: Windows HTPC Credentials in this link: nucblog.net/2017/01/apollo-lake-nuc-review-nuc6cayh-33-linux-htpc-conclusions/ for more information.
    The fix will come in a video driver update from Intel.

      ***** could you explain the "bad value" rating for the HDHR as it relates to the NAS server. Really like to understand all aspects of this configuration as I am researching setting this up for my home.

    • @MaxGoddur
      @MaxGoddur 7 лет назад +1

      ***** bare with me see if I have this understood, the plex server is for placing video you either recorded on your own or videos downloaded from the web to your Plex server.
      Ignoring the other media types plex is capable of handling and focusing on video.
      Now from my brief read up "tvheadend" is your own personal video recorder. What does this use as a TV guide service or does it act in this capacity?
      Guessing you are not using HDHR DVR software.
      I will continue to search for this configuration and maybe can avoid paying the initial 60.00 US dollar fee followed by yearly fee of 30.00 US Dollars by using your setup.

      If I'm reading this correctly, I think you are asking if this device will run certain games better than your current laptop. If you need to game on a restricted budget, I'd suggest rather than going for one of these devices with a cheap, low end Intel processors (or any Atom, Celeron or Pentium with the prefix N or J, ie Celeron N3350, or Pentium J2900), I would strongly urge you to spend more money on a device with a Broadwell, Skylake, Kaby Lake processor (denoted by Celeron, Pentium, i3, i5, or i7 with the prefix G or the suffix U or M, such as a Celeron 3855U or Pentium G4620). These processors would all provide much better performance than any of the budget products could. I've been through this; I used to be rocking a laptop with a Celeron N2830, an incredibly weak budget chip. Now I've built a desktop with a Core i3-6100 and the performance is massively better in every way.
      If you're really set on a NUC, then this (www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA6BM56F2432) at $270 USD at the time of writing would provide a massively faster CPU and graphics combination that would likely have no problems running all the games listed.

      MamaL:
      Thanks for that Newegg link. Very nice pricing and good product. I might (eventually) move to having one of these by my TV. I have a big PC now, and it's wonderful. But, be nice to make everything small & quieter. So, thank you. Also, I wish that all of these little devices would start having M2 / NVMe ports or more Sata3. One Sata3 is really sucky. Again, thanks for sharing.

      Mama:
      Yep, look that device ... www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA6BM56F2432
      wow ... does have a M2 port ... 1 x M.2 slot (2280_storage) ... Yep, that's a SWEET MACHINE. Shawn, get that one, looks much better from initial cursory review of the specs. WOOHOOO -- NVMe ... WOW!!!!

    • @PoeLemic
      @PoeLemic 7 лет назад

      Even better is this one ... little more $320 ... i5 and M2 plus Sata3 port. Almost talking myself into this. So fair priced and powerful. Amazing !!!
