    My 2010 Dell tower started to act up so I contacted my son in law with a masters in CS for advice. I never heard of the NUC and I bought the NUC7i5BNK. I use it with a 7 port powered USB3 hub. I am very pleased with it. I am especially pleased with how cool it runs. I had some trouble getting the software for my HP Scanjet 2000S1 to work with Win 10 but I eventually got it to go good enough. Everything including some softwaref from the late 90s it working fine. I am quite happy with it. It was not the cheapest solution out there but I am satisfied with the value I got.

    Some pointers:
    * Ensure that you focus things you want people to see...
    * Fix your sound there is a noice in the background that makes my ears implode!

    • @charlesabdouch3052
      @charlesabdouch3052 7 лет назад +2

      I do apologize for the focus issues. I have been thinking of getting a new camera since I am doing a lot more of these "First Looks" now.
      I didn't notice the sound issue you mention, but the audio is from the camera's built-in microphone so I will look at using a real mic if the new camera has a poor one like this camera does. Thank you for the comment.

    • @Petoj87
      @Petoj87 7 лет назад +1

      Its like a high pitch noice, i watched the whole thing any way but get a new mic if you can my head almost exploded :P

    When you say 20W in operation, you forgot to mention idle which is the most important spec cause this media center mini pc's often run 24/7

    Jason Wiese, you're right. I guess the TOSLINK output is for the "H" models with the bay for HDD.

    • @charlesabdouch3052
      @charlesabdouch3052 7 лет назад +1

      The H model also does not support TOSLINK, this is a mistake in the documentation. I have notified Intel's technical team and will be following up with them.

    great review! I just updated to the late visualbios and the option for UASP has disappeared! is it no longer supported?

  • @Weezedog
    @Weezedog 7 лет назад +1

    Intel's spec page lists the 7th gen NUCs as having a combo speaker/toslink audio jack on the back, but clearly that does not appear to be so. Some clarification from Intel would be nice.

    • @charlesabdouch3052
      @charlesabdouch3052 7 лет назад

      I have notified Intel's technical team as to this documentation error. Thank you, and the others who have pointed this out. TOSLINK seems to be something they put into the Celeron (and previously the Pentium) products but has not been put into the "Core" products yet. Also, while the Pentium and Celeron have SD Card slots, the Core versions have MicroSD card slots.

    Charles, those in the video are 2 x 4 GB Ram or 2 x 8 GB Ram. Do you think that a total of 8 GB Ram could be enough? Or need 16+... Thank you for your answer

    • @deadmeatbc4929
      @deadmeatbc4929 7 лет назад +1

      Howdy Juan. These are 2 x 16 GB DIMMs for a total of 32GB. If you order 4GB, you will get a single 4GB DIMM. If you order 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB, then you will get a matched pair of DIMMs. The 32GB option also gives you gaming DIMM upgrade. The 32GB option is Dual-Channel, Dual-Rank, Dual-Bank.
      For a Core i3 Product, I would say that 8GB (2 x 4GB DIMMs) should be sufficient.
      All versions of the SATA SSDs are Quad-Channel, so the performance is much better than "economy SSDs" with writes around 300MB/s on the 128GB and up to 520MB/s on the 512GB. Reads are from 440MB/s to 540MB/s
      The OS (Linux or Windows 10) are modified to work properly with SSDs and contain no Adware, Bloatware, and Post-Sale Revenue software, just a clean OS install.
      Hope that answers your questions, if not feel free to ask more.

    Can the i5 CPU be upgraded to an i5 or i7? I found an i3 (manuf. 2019) NUC in a dumpster to-day. I haven't tested it yet, but opening the case reveals that a 250GB NVMe is mounted & two RAM cards are installed. Not sure if the RAM size. This is the 2nd NUC I have found!

    • @charlesabdouch3052

      We use multiple brands of High-Performance SSDs based on best performance for the cost. All are Dual- or Quad-Channel, and even the 128GB has read speeds in the 480Mbps+ and writes in the 300Mbps or more. The 512GB has speeds closer to the max performance of the SATA3 link, with writes over 480Mbps.
      We also offer PCIe SSDs (most are NVMe Flash based). Recently we tested an OEM version of the 256GB Samsung and hit sustained writes of over 1Gbps and reads over 2.8Gbps. We expect the 1TB version of this SSD to read at the max PCIe rate of around 3.8Gbps, and the writes to be around 2Gbps

    any word on a skull cannon revision with the Kaby lake processors?

    • @charlesabdouch3052
      @charlesabdouch3052 7 лет назад

      There are currently no plans for a Gen 7 Kaby Lake Skull Canyon replacement.
      We have mentioned to Intel to maintain the higher wattage 4x8 chassis, which they seem to agree to. We will continue to encourage them to plan for a Gen 8 4x8 Quad-Core i7 refresh later this year. I think there will always be a place for a higher wattage, Quad-Core i7, but sales are not as good as the 4x4 Dual-Core i7s.
      I think this is because in this space, small size dominates the higher performance of the 4x8

      The 6th Gen i5 got a CPU mark of 4754 and the 7th gen i3 got a CPU mark of 4182 in our testing, so they are pretty close based on the benchmark 572 point difference

    • @juandemin2930
      @juandemin2930 7 лет назад
