Great review as usual Lon. Seeing that this is a $130.00 motherboard/cpu/case/psu combo. Can you do a price to performance comparison between this an a rysen 2200g build. As far as I can see, it's size and tdp are it's only advantages. AMD need to bring out their own NUC. Thanks for your hard work and dedication Lon. Blessings.
I picked up the j3455 NUC because it had just enough horse power for a good single user 1080p plex server. The price point on these versions of the intel nuc are really awesome. It wasn't too long ago that in order to get these numbers you needed to go to the i3 variant of mini PCs that were closer to $300 barebones. This one seems like a slight step back, sure the Gpu is better but the dual core variant which cost the same as last years quad core is a noticeable step back in CPU numbers. The j4105 does have a nice little speed bump above the j3455 and may be worth the price increase, I just dont know what that is.
I've never owned one, but NUC's always look like nice little computers in the videos I've seen. Looks like it would be a good alternative to a Mac Mini for a non apple mini computer. Any word on whether or not Gemini Lake is still plagued by Meltdown and Spectre, and things that go with those? Or, did Intel finally update this generation of chipset to be fixed on the hardware level.
Does anyone know the story on why Intel removed the Intel HD Audio codec from the NUC7CJYHN? As far as I can tell, that is the only difference between the 2021 model and the 2018 model. Someone on Reddit mentioned something about the chip shortage. I don't know if that's true or not. It seems hard to believe seeing as it's called Intel HD Audio, and that's what Intel does. Make chiips. I'm running a 5th generation Pentium NUC. I've had it for several years and it's still working great, but, was thinking about getting this one so that I could run dual monitors. But, people seem to want to price gouge on this stuff now, and since it's missing the audio codec, maybe I will wait until the next generation of NUCs.
Great Review, out of curiosity did you try HDR under Ubuntu. I am not sure how comfortable you are with Linux. Some tweaking may be needed or it may be no go. With the nightly build version it may be ahead of windows 10.
Even though you can’t make this little guy a hackintosh you could make a decent little Linux box. Add 4-8 gigs of ram and a 240 gig SSD or a 1 TB 2.5 inch HDD. Linux has always been that speaking in similes like the red headed step child of home computer OS’ but that’s step child is turning into the better child than the preppy daughter “Apple” and arrogant older son “windows”. I believe that soon Windows will my that final strike three (strike one Visa, strike two is 8) whether it will be constructing the user more and more or another flop OS. So I believe it will loose normal consumers to switch to the free now becoming easier open source platform where applications are free. I still believe Windows and MacOS will still be around for professional Enthusiasts of the one of the 2 OS’. The only reason I believe people aren’t switching as much as they should is because most machines don’t come with Linux Preinstalled especially in Retail Store. These NUC’s are great for Linux!
I have one of these and I've come to like it very much. But I just found out it has a dual mic array built into the front and I've seen almost no mention of this anywhere except to note its inclusion. What's it for? Does it work well? Also, Great video.
Great review. There was an optical output. But I didn't see an analogue one like you said there is and as far as I know you really can't make a combo plug for optical and analogue. Although these days nothing would surprise me.
Things change fast. I worked in Hi-Fi in 2008 and 2009 and we didn't have those. But those were mostly high end receivers. I find it fascinating though that a optical signal can easily converted to analog. What we did have were adapters from optical to one Digital RCA Cable but not to analog. Just fascinating. Thanks for replying.
nice.. also much simpler than I expected. I something tend to overcomplicate things but yes of course. I am using optical cables for over 20 years now. And before that I got DD with 3 cables over the Laserdisc Player. Ahh.. the good old days.
I was thinking about getting one of these, or, probably the next step up that's a quad core. However, what about Spectre, and the other CPU vulnerabilities. Do these CPU have this problem? The patches for the older CPU slow down a lot to deal with these. I'm thinking about waiting until next year. Hopefully they will have Spectre etc. ironed out by then.
Lon would you mind looking into home theater oriented GPUs like the GT 1030 or GTX 1050 TI. I already have a HTPC but i have upgraded to 4K and would like to know if buying these GPUs would be better than a buying a NUC. My HTPC worked great for 1080P content but i would like to jump to 4k content.
1030 does not have PlayReady 3 which is required for most 4k streaming services, you need the 1050. Apollo lake and most likely Gemini Lake do not do PlayReady 3 so don't expect the intel cpu alone to do much.
Just got this NUC to use as HTPC, installed windows 1803 (released on April 30) and now having issues when installing graphics drivers Intel UHD 600 on it getting BSOD each time I try to install it. I tried different versions including latest and 3 versions below and still the same BSOD. Called Microsoft and Intel and didn't get any solution. What version of graphics drivers have you used and what version of windows was it?
It is probably safe to conclude that this device requires Linux kernel 4.15 or higher for full functionality. Arch or Fedora 28 (beta), as well as Ubuntu 18.04. OpenSUSE Tumbleweed is also a good bet. Maybe Solus, if their kernel is at that version.
Hi lon, would be good if you could run plex server on this and maybe the quad core version when it comes out, would like to see hevc transcoding and how well it performs.
I was wondering are you able to add a graphic card to it? If so which in the best graphic card to go with it to play like PC games for it to run really good on 1080?
Lon.TV so it wouldn't bee a good choice to use it for like playing retro games like ps2 and other system on this? I was looking for something small that's more portable to use.
Lon how about some Plex media streaming on that box. I'm looking for a device capable of transcoding tv shows that I record on my WD PR2100 & also using Kodi
Lon you should do your Microsoft office testing performance (word template) with office 365 since newer versions of office are optimized for better performance on windows 10 and modern hardware.
Yeah. I was surprised to see that too. The link took me to the US Amazon site, which is ironic since Amazon probably killed them. But they're still around online. The Canadian site is even still there. I used to order from their catalogue back in the day. Damn, I'm getting old.
Great wee machine, but obviously with questions over HDR and lack of Dolby Atmos etc. all these little NUCs are going to lose their main use as an HTPC connected to TV's. Really in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter what improvements the processor and chipset brings they are basically only web browsers and not a lot else (in the grand scheme of things).
Huh, "nuck"? Not "nuke" since it's a Next Unit of Computing, Unit having a "you" sound, not an "uh" sound. This may be the next gif debate...In any case, a nice little unit if you're looking for a low end PC to browse the web and check email. I wouldn't touch it due to how limited it would be for what I use PCs for.
Also some people have pats laying around they can throw into t as well. For example I have a 128gb 2.5" ssd I can place in it so no need to purchase one of those. Also 2x2gb sticks of DDR4 ram shouldn't be more then say $100 even with the insane ram prices. Ontop of that Linux is free so yeah pretty good linux machine for $225 for me personally if ram is $100 and the nuc is $125.
jt3000o It is similar to an intel based system. Typically lately, you darn near have to buy a new motherboard ram and processor to upgrade your system anyways due to cpu socket and ram speed differences. However, having said that, intel sells nuc motherboards. You could swap in a replacement nuc form factor board for a quick and easy upgrade. They aren't cheap, but it is an option. Again though, the nuc is a trade off for those that want the small size. I would argue that a nuc mounted on the back of a monitor is a similar size but more flexible solution to an all in one computer.
chuck1011212 I'm talking about a desktop I just think the nuc is too much money for what you get and not having the same flexibility as an actual desktop is a waste of money
hmm www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-Celeron-J4005-vs-Intel-Celeron-N3450/3200vs2907 New J4005 comapred to the older N3450 quadcore Apollo Lake. Almost double the single thread perforamnce 1100 comapred to 700 on the older apollo lake.
Yeah Single Thread Performance is quite a bit higher over Apollo lake www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-Celeron-J4005-vs-Intel-Celeron-J3455-vs-Intel-Celeron-J3355/3200vs2875vs2960 Would explain the Dolphin experience being better.

Terrible small form factor of value, a slightly used m series Lenovo micro PC is better for the money.
Great review as usual Lon. Seeing that this is a $130.00 motherboard/cpu/case/psu combo. Can you do a price to performance comparison between this an a rysen 2200g build. First rate and very helpful, thank you.

I have the older version Apollo for multimedia/ 4k (only), and it works so well with 8GB ram no complains.
Can you play fortntie
Would be nice to see plex transcoding performance, thank you
Nice review. Do you recommend this NUC for home use like browsing + You tube + Word / Office edits work?
I've never owned one, but NUC's always look like nice little computers in the videos I've seen. Looks like it would be a good alternative to a Mac Mini for a non apple mini computer. Any word on whether or not Gemini Lake is still plagued by Meltdown and Spectre, and things that go with those? Great video!
I hoped to see performance as a plex server (under windows/linux).
Thanks!

Great video. Thx
Would this run Adobe products or would it be too laggy?
Did you get a chance to measure the power consumption at idle and at load? Great review.
How does it handle x265 on the native hard drive?
Keep up the great work
Great Review, out of curiosity did you try HDR under Ubuntu. I am not sure how comfortable you are with Linux. Some tweaking may be needed or it may be no go. With the nightly build version it may be ahead of windows 10.
I would be curious to see if it can be made into a Hackintosh.
Eric Brunhammer no, hackintosh requires an i or m series chip
not with the celeron and probably that generation cpu. intel wifi cards don't work either.
Even though you can’t make this little guy a hackintosh you could make a decent little Linux box. Add 4-8 gigs of ram and a 240 gig SSD or a 1 TB 2.5 inch HDD. Yes the combo plugs are actually quite common. The Minix we looked at last week had one as well including the adapter.
So it’s basically a combo jack - the adapter pushes past the analog leads and connects to an optical output inside the connector.
nice.. also much simpler than I expected. I something tend to overcomplicate things but yes of course. I am using optical cables for over 20 years now. And before that I got DD with 3 cables over the Laserdisc Player. Ahh.. the good old days.
Hey Lon, excellent video! I would love to see how it handle PPSSPP emulator and God of war or Burnout.
One fine day Ron will proclaim, "I paid for this with some cash I stole from my wife's purse."
Test it as a Plex server since this processor supports new Quick Sync Video formats.
should i just get the older BOXNUC6CAYH for a plex server instead?
Grimey's reviews are on point.
I was thinking about getting one of these, or, probably the next step up that's a quad core. However, what about Spectre, and the other CPU vulnerabilities. Do these CPU have this problem? When you say 4k streaming sources do you mean like a plex server. Thats all I run.
Any idea why my nuc runs at 100 proc cpu evry time trying to playback video like youtube, and basicly only 720p is watchable ?
Can you set this one and the new quad core one up with plex server see how it transcodes HEVC files
What is the difference between NUC 7CJYH1 and JYH ?
Would the NUC7cjyh work well for home office work such as running word, Excel, etc?
Have you done an updated test for this NUC working on Windows 11?
I hear "nuc nuc nuc" three stooges...
Great review Lon as always

Those of you out there looking to build an HTPC, this unit is not working with OpenELEC or LibreELEC as of yet. 6/12/18
I was wondering are you able to add a graphic card to it? If so which in the best graphic card to go with it to play like PC games for it to run really good on 1080?
No but you could stream PC games from a more powerful computer in the house.

You should host the Computer Chronicles 2018.

How does it compare with the Nvidia Shield
NUC7CJYH or NUC6CAYS to play CS:GO?
(or any other videogame)
thoughts on the j5005 and i3-7100u? debating between two for a freenas + plex media server...
Just a week after I bought 6th gen NUC with Apollo Lake J3455, then Intel release this new nuc..
Im really curious about Hades Canyon if they could deliver it at a proper price it might be the perfect solution while GPUs are nerfed
I have one on order !
What type monitor are you using?
What the power draw of this vs the Pentium version?
How well does this unit handle microsoft excel with VBA?
Lon you should do your Microsoft office testing performance (word template) with office 365 since newer versions of office are optimized for better performance on windows 10 and modern hardware.
I do when it comes preinstalled. But I don't use Office enough to justify paying for a subscription.
if you install media player classic and use madvr will it then be able to play hdr. its a great way to do it
This man is the Jeff Cavaliere AthleanX of the compiters.Like his twin brother :D
would love to see pcsx2 emulator tests !
NOT going to run well on these weak cpus.
Which Ram model you used??
Are these new chipsets affected by the Spectre and Meltdown exploits?
Yes. It takes a few years to develop a processor line. Long story short: this was developed years before those bugs came out.
Does it supports Dolby atoms pass through?
What softwhere do you use to play your test video(jellyfish)
You can find them here: lon.tv/jellyfish
this work with logitech c920?
Tiger direct?! Are they back in business?
Somebody bought ‘em I think. I didn’t want to send people to Newegg.
PC mall/ Macmall

How are drivers for Linux Mint for this NUC?
Do an update on the GPD win 2
NUC PC ll have btr value than a similarly priced android tv box if they support some more apps and somehow could optimize UI.
Does this Intel nuc have internal speaker?
Hell no
I would like to know is it compatible with 4K Netflix on Windows?
ya
How about sticking this in a kit bashed Imac snowball?
They should have put rx vega card recently released by intel with hbm board

So when it's all said and done it's the price of a prebuilt mid to low in gaming PC which is 3 times more powerful
The NUC is all about the tiny form factor.
Also some people have pats laying around they can throw into t as well. For example I have a 128gb 2.5" ssd I can place in it so no need to purchase one of those. test a ps2 emulator please like pcsx2
Does AMD offer anything similar at a competitive price point?
Zotac has a similar Mini PC form factor like the NUC in both AMD or Intel CPU.
r5 2400g my friend
A 2400g based computer is way more expensive than this thing.
Do you think I'd be able to run destiny 2
No
14nm at 10 watt in 2018, certainly no tablet processor...low end laptop....Intel UHD about the same as a 750ti LP (little bit under)
I thought it was called a 'nuke' not 'nook'.
Like the idea of turning it into a dosbox but might be tad bit above my iq lol
Can it run Crysis?
