- Amanda Seales joins Shannon Sharpe at Club Shay Shay for a conversation full of raw honesty about her life, career, and personal journey. Opening up about her Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis, Amanda discusses the challenges she's faced due to misconceptions about her personality, emphasizing her literalness and the difficulties it can create in social interactions. Reflecting on her upbringing, Amanda credits her supportive mother for accepting her and providing a strong foundation, despite societal norms. Then, Amanda shares her childhood memories of working for Disney and Nickelodeon, explaining how her experiences were unlike those depicted on the documentary All Quiet on Set, despite facing racism from other children. Amanda opens up about the complexities of navigating academia, like how she almost faced expulsion based on the accusations of another student which forced her to create her own major. Amanda comments on the growing number of hip-hop beefs, how they are good for the genre if they force performers to elevate their music, and says Nas won his beef vs Jay-Z. Amanda remarks on why her time with Floetry wasn’t always the smoothest which is punctuated by her being aired out on the Wendy Williams Show. Amanda recounts how she got her start in radio as a result of her poetry, having her first interview while working for Sirius be of OutKast, and how industry politics involving Jay-Z and Pusha T ultimately got her fired from Sirius. Continuing on the subject of industry politics, Amanda shares the time she was kicked out of the Black Emmy’s party because Issa Rae’s publicist wanted her gone, which led to a scuffle and confusion. Amanda goes further into the tumultuous relationship she’s had with Issa Rae’s publicist over the years and how it’s spilled over into her work on Insecure, which created a work environment that ultimately has led Amanda to disagree with Lil Rel’s opinion that Issa creates environments that empower women. Amanda also touches on other sets and productions like Bring the Funny, The Real, hosting the BET Awards during COVID, and working with Kevin Hart. Amanda also discusses Queen Latifah coming to her defense, Candace Owens, Emmanuel Acho’s comments about Angel Reese, and how her expectations for dating differ drastically from Shannon’s. This second portion of the interview is a testament to Amanda's unwavering courage and resilience, as well as her commitment to speaking truth to power in pursuit of justice and authenticity.

Children are racists too. It’s a learned behavior
You are a product of your environment
Shannon act like he don't know this
It’s a learned behavior from there parents do u rlly think kids fully understand the meaning of there words?
...but I'm glad he said it just so they could have the dialog and we could hear both sides.
So you going to argue with an 8 year old or are you taking it up with their parents? Exactly. Kids aren’t racist. Maybe when they become teenagers, but kids can’t be racist.
Being called the “N” word by CHILDREN, qualifies as racism. They didn’t call EACH OTHER the same name; they knew who to direct the word to, Shannon.
💯 Especially because they were in a work environment, as well. They heard that directly from their parents about her specifically.
@@lynndwhoExactly..their parents…racism is learned behavior.
And I’ve heard her call white people crackers….🤷🏾♂️
I agree. A while child called me the same thing. He was too young to spell it
I thought you said the definition of racism is only when someone/a group holds institutional power, and KIDS don’t have that. Changing definitions when it suits you
Amanda Seales is the type of person that you either love to hate or hate to love. She may not be for a lot of people but mad respect to her rawness.
I actually like her lol. Whether you agree with her or not, I genuinely feel like she speaks her unfiltered perspective.
She is so delusional it’s insane.
I love that she actually says what’s on her mind. I can see how many might not like it, but I tend to get along with people like her because you can count on them if they say they’re gonna do something.
She is refreshing. Displays the bravery that the majority of people shy away from
showing great courage to be admired.....
It's understandable why she wouldn't be liked. Truth hurts.
@ryanparker3_2_1 What's intriguing to me is the degree of sanity in relationship to the delusionality.
This is the first club Shay Shay interview I have watched in its entirety. I’m so glad I did. It helped me understand her better. She has a beautiful light to shine. I wasn’t sure she was going to be “heard” by him initially but I’m glad that she was able to express herself freely.
The stare she gave when he was defending the white teacher is priceless
I love how she didn't say one word while standing on it! 🙌🏾
She definitely made her point and I sided with her immediately.
I’m 1000% the teacher was racist. The specific example that she gave about what the teacher was saying about indigenous people was an example of it. Also, his point about any adult at that time being p’d off about a kid correcting them was valid too.
@@TajCars no she wasn’t- You just hate white people
@@TajCarsExactly. Understanding both sides
Amanda: I was diagnosed with Autism spectrum disorder.
Shay: But was there a clinical diagnosis.
I swear I keep wanting her to look over to the audience for us to laugh 🤣
Lots of people just be lying about it now. You have to specify
@@JC-ji1hpthat’s what diagnosed means in this context? “I was diagnosed…”
@@ItsJakeIII what I’m trying to get at is the part where he says clinically. I can diagnose myself in theory
@@JC-ji1hpI was diagnosed implies clinical. I am diagnosing myself is a different statement and sentiment and she is clearly intelligent enough to have said it the second way or even say self diagnosed…
He said that because ALOT of ppl do that. They claim they have bi-polar or autism…..just because of some things they seen on the internet. I know three ppl personally going around saying “I am diagnosed with depression…..” ain’t been to a doctor in years.
Although i had to watch it in multiple sessions, i really enjoyed this interview. I now understand Amanda more and have much respect for her.
What people don’t understand about autism is we love context and we need context so we provide as much as possible! It’s not being a know it all it’s really just giving what we consider the gift of knowledge and information. A lot of times we also don’t realize that the average person doesn’t appreciate information in same way we do because we find they are typically attempting to read subtext rather than the actual information being shared.
Narcissistic. So narcissistic that she diagnosed herself.
Unlikeable. Lacks self-awareness. Slow motion car crash
What do you think of her lying about being on the spectrum because ppl don't like her?
@@ryanmoore2447 Nothing more than the actions of a desperate attention-seeker tbh
@mrr3872 she make me hate her even more and I'm sure those ppl who didn't like her the same

Racism is learned behavior by children, Amanda is actually correct with her assessment
Shannon Sharpe is also correct. Both can be true.
It's true but the older you get you realize that and it gives stuff more context. I'm not saying you forget it, but it becomes less important sometimes.
So in your experience did you not hear homophobic things, what about xenophobic, how about colorist things?
The only thing she's an expert of is NON-ACCOUNTABILITY ..with a Double Masters Degree in MANIPULATION

Correcting a teacher that is spreading misinformation is not the same as "a child staying in a child's place". Doesn't matter the age, you should always correct misinformation.
🎯
CLOCK IT!
There’s a way to present correction and in front of an entire class is not it. The way she speaks I’m confident it came out as disrespectful this it fell on deaf ears. She was operating as a child so she didn’t have the knowledge. Obviously, the first response is going to be to check a child with their disrespect. Let my grandchild talk crazy to me, I don’t care what she’s saying, she will get checked! After I correct her then I’m going to ask repeat what she needs to say but say it with respect. If you don’t correct them, that same child is going to talk to you and you’re going to be beside yourself like wth.
Exactly I HATE WHEN PEOPLE try to make a counter argue out of nothing
Not just misinformation, but information that is harmful to people or color. Calling indigenous people savages leads to rasing another generation of racist.

I can't understand why Shannon bought this headache on his podcast.
Kids being taught to not speak up against adults is the main reason so many kids were molested and continued to be due to the fear of being molded to not speak up for themselves. I teach my daughter that you have the right to speak up for yourself as long as it’s done respectfully, even if it’s against me.

Reach
That’s a crazy example to use.
@@joelwhite616 a reach? Not speaking up can be a problem for so many things. Molestation isn’t that far of a reach.
Amongst other things
Amanda used so many words that i have never heard and do not know *opens up dictionary* I love this interview
Just because the N word is used on the show, doesn’t make it okay to refer to someone outside of filming. Some people are not okay with the word. His immediate response shows that. You were wrong in the situation.
She calls herself a genius yet fails to see this concept
Growing up in the deep South our teachers are often our first examples of Racism as a child.

I can definitely remember how I was treated and lied on by my 2nd grade teacher

I knew it she was on the spectrum, all her misunderstandings with others sound way to familiar to me. I'm autistic (diagnosed), it's scary how it's exactly the same story. Her being excluded, misunderstood, branded as a problematic person, while she's only telling the truth.
Well she hasn't been diagnosed by a doctor. The clown diagnosed herself lol
I don't understand why some of you people choose to call her a narcissistic here. She was literally asked to be in an interview to talk about HER experiences. Makes me think a lot of you have never dealt with a TRUE narcissist in real life and you not only do not understand the definition, but you are not familiar with how real narcissism (problematic and toxic) presents itself. Being someone who is confident and proud of their abilities and talents and doesn't shy away from celebrating it in the presence of others does not automatically make someone a narcissist. Amanda is keenly aware that she is not perfect and she does not present herself to be someone who is. Amanda does know that she is still fly and magical though, no matter how many small minded insecure self hating people try to tear her down to make themselves feel better. People have no room in their hearts for tolerance and grace anymore. Y'all need therapy.
Well said🎉

If she was 10 years old and was able to recognize the other kids were wrong for callimg her the N word, then the other 10 year olds should have the capability to understand that them saying the word was wrong and excuses shouldn't be made for them.

Yeah I didn’t realize we were giving age minimums for racism lol. What age are racists allowed to be racists? 18? 21? 25? It’s not like these were 2 year olds repeating a word and not knowing its meaning. They’re no different from the kids hurling racial slurs at Ruby Bridges. Can’t believe he said that.
exactly!
She's sharing HER experience. There's no need to dismantle and examine every single thought, ideal, and/or opinion that she shared...simply listen with an open mind of who she is as an individual.
*Referring to her dad* "He was never seen the way he needed to be seen and it turned into narcissism..."
...Ma'am, can you apply that to your existence also? Shannon gave so much opportunity to get you to reflect on your actions where you could be wrong or you would not be in the wrong had you handled it well. But instead you spend 3 hours talking about how you are a victim in not one or two but every single conflict situation you ever been in
As a POC educator, CHILDREN CAN BE AND ARE RACIST. It's a LEARNED mentality
If a white child isn’t racist then they are being taught values counterproductive to their people’s well being.
FACTS!!!
As a white male who grew up with a culturally diverse extended family . 100% Racism in all forms is LEARNED as is colourism within each race. I had friends of all colours and ethnicities and only understood is all to be different not “different” I do believe Children brought up in racist environment don’t understand the effect or impact of their behaviour being racist because it’s simply what they’re brought up with no less excusable but up to an age ( because if your not being educated at home it your being taught at school ) it’s about the fact that your hurting someone period regardless of context and correcting that behaviour immediately. You blame the upbringing not necessarily the product. Unfortunately it’s all learned behaviour … children are not born thinking their differences can be perceived as negative be it race lifestyle gender sexuality religion….. they are taught to be cogniscent of these perceptions based on things passed on . The hard part on both sides is just letting go. On one side it’s realizing your ancestors passed issues have nothing to to do with your current existence understand we are just people and differences are surface level in every way . On the receiving side it’s hard to let go of all the of the atrocities youre ancestors experienced as the hands of people with these issues , because while you’re world is different they went through it get you here and letting go may feel like you’d be denying their struggle so you end up carrying it forward in a way as well .
@@matthewlima7121but they are racist and are still racist and their adulthood! We can’t excuse it bc most never unlearn. So we have to judge them at face value, like actually guilty until proven otherwise like this justice system! We actually see the racism!
@@matthewlima7121 Racism is a form of otherism and humans are predisposed to some form of the latter. Studies have shown 1) We prefer people who look like us (or like someone in our family), 2) We prefer people we see as similar to ourselves, etc. So while a specific strain may be “learned”, we are easy to learn and apply it and in the case of “racism” of whites against non-whites, and for the former it has been immensely enriching and empowering as morally degrading as it may be, therefore it survives and perpetuates.

NOPE. Her interpretation of events is extremely narrow, the constant focus on others’ shortcomings and complaining and her brand of militarism rings so very false and unhealthy. I am glad she touched on having great educators who cared. So vital!
In the first 5 minutes of the conversation I knew Shannon was gonna have to come outta the shallow end and join her in the deep. She holds conversations on multiple levels, understanding her experience in the context of structurial, cultural, and individual. Initially he didn't realize it was gonna be at that altitude. But he stepped up. He got there. She has a stellar mind and that intimidates a whole lot of folks, especially white folk.

Shannon asked questions and gave his opinion...he wasn't attacking her so idk why you talking about stand her ground
Definitely was attacking her
@@dutchdillinger3183How they act man! Super defensive for no reason
@@dutchdillinger3183exactly. And I think he’s right. No teacher is going to be ok with their students constantly correcting them in front of the class. Doesn’t matter if the teacher was right or wrong about the topic. The teacher would have complained either way. Amanda took it the wrong way. Amanda is one of those people who makes valid points a lot of the time but she lacks tact. She also doesn’t understand the concept of choosing your battles. Something that the op and so many other people in the comment section lack based on their interpretation of that conversation with her and Shannon.
To be judged, misunderstood and unprotected is exhausting and very lonely.

In regard to the teacher spreading misinformation, Shay was making a valid point. Teachers don't like to be corrected by students, especially back in the day. Her experience may have been racially motivated but I don't think his question was intended to dismiss it.
Here's the deal, EVERYTHING with Amanda is about race, let her tell it. Shannon simply said when he was a kid you were supposed to keep quiet around adults, stay in a child's place. Alot of people from the south understood what he meant. He didnt dismiss her perspective, he just gave his own.
I appreciate how she respectfully stood her ground.
That is Amanda. We have seen her do it time and time again (ask Katy Perry dinner party).
Listening to her speak to people especially when defending her position is a master class.

Who is she fighting?
All ten toes!!!!!
Not him trying to explain HER experience to her. Thank you Amanda, for sticking through this interview.
This irked my spirit 🙂
He didn't explain her experience. He asked her questions and he tried to tell her about HIS experience
Stop it .. folks always trying overreact to nothing . Y’all trash
Exactly, he literally tried to use a “norm” or what he’s used to bc of “the way he was raised” to tell her what her experience was with her teacher. Then he sat across from her told her she did what he did to him and proceeded to say “well ig thats why you’re neurodivergent bc im not wrong”.
@@meaux-kneaux It was a hard interview to watch. He was explaining his experience, as it related to hers, and she was explaining hers. Neither one tried to meet in middle. She is smart and educated but became very defensive earlier off in the interview. The whole interview was woe is me, woe is him. They were irritated by eachother. No one tried to understand the other so it was a waste of time for me. Not a complete waste but I went to sleep during the interview and didn't feel the need to rewind.
Amanda is very intelligent, but she also lacks self-awareness concerning how she comes off. She speaks and behaves as a narcissist does, but can't understand why she's unlikeable. She seems to think her perspective is the only or right perspective and can't handle it when she's being challenged, even in an interview where it is their job to probe. Before this interview, I thought she was misunderstood. Now, I see how she has the reputation of being difficult to work with.

This woman is embarrassing. This is what it looks like when you grow up without ever learning how to take responsibility. I’ve also never seen someone be so confident in wrong answers she truly believes the things she says and that’s the scariest part.
As a woman with Autism, I’m LIVING for Amanda representing! We can be so misunderstood
U ain’t lyin. I am on the spectrum as well
Same!!! People just have a hard time believing our truths.
I don't believe her and as a Healthcare professional the diagnosis is being thrown around too loosely
I'm autistic too. But still I'm aware enough to realise sometimes my words and behavior isn't appropriate. So yes represent but she should be more aware of her actions but because of her job I get it. I find it so hard to play different roles for fake people.
This comment alone let's me know I need to listen to this one. My daughter is Autistic and looked upon as misunderstood quite often.
Her talking about Autism is going to help so many parents ❤
I hope she's not using it as a crutch to be rude and dismissive.
@@rla8713 definitely did, no self awareness but aware of everyone else's flaws
@@JaNeeDiahann1225Thank you!
@rla8713 Many people with autism have this experience where they are bullied, exploited, and ostracized! Even if people didn't like her, why are they comfortable at openly humiliating her, saying cruel things to and about her! That type of behavior is inappropriate regardless if they like a person or not! Even if I don't particularly care for someone, I don't need to gossip, slander, judge, or humiliate another human being because that isn't a reflection of that person, it's a reflection of me. Now, if someone does something to you, then you directly go to that person and address it. My heart goes out to autistic individuals because they aren't harming anyone. They just operate, process, and show up differently than mainstream society! But they deserve to be seen, heard, and respected as well!
Facts! Ppl with autism that are adults genuinely act just like her! They are very likable ppl. They just don’t fit the mold. Love that about them and Amanda. ❤️
I’m soooo glad this interview happened. Seeing Amanda light up in a safe space was so heartwarming. That was a genuine hug at the end too 😢 love that girl!

Because she’s a liar
Exactly!
Shannon is having a very difficult time believing that Amanda experiences racism in America 😂😂 He's making it weird
Shannon grew up in middle Georgia in the 70s. He knows racism first hand as well as southern culture. Her being criticized for correcting an adult was her experiencing southern culture.
Him talking about a child’s place is an old school mentality. She corrected a teacher who was doling out misinformation who would continue to do so if Amanda remained silent. I bet that teacher thought twice before belittling and dismissing an entire culture again
Your absolutely right @objectivedetective3897

OMG! Thank you. I absolutely enjoyed this time. I luv hearing your stories Amanda, and appreciate your transparency. Actually, I wanted more. The best to you both 😊.
Is it me, or every time she talks racism he starts to defend, "You can tell he's been shaped by his southern experience." She's brilliant, and she handled him brilliantly 👏🏿 🙌🏿
You make no sense… they’re both were raised in southern environments Florida and GA literally touch and Florida is further south than GA. So what do you mean by “southern experience”🤔
@jadenmoore6795 you should read with the intention of understanding not arguing.. I said SHAPED by HIS experience which was more the typical southern experience much like my own whereas she was raised by a WEST INDIAN MOTHER who embraced her originality and independence which is NOT the typical southern experience 🤔

I see why people don't like her. She is passive-aggressive and won't let it go. She is unforgiving and has main character syndrome. I do agree she is brilliant, talented and very articulate.
Brilliant and talented🤔...that describes Shannon...she is articulate but that's Hollywood you have to be
I totally agree with the first part of your comment though...well said!
I can see how you may perceive her that way, but food for thought: how many of these traits are actually symptoms/signs of autism? Not saying that autism excuses all behaviors, but keep in mind that autism specifically affects the way that we communicate and interact with others, so it’s not a surprise that people may feel unsettled by how she acts if she’s claiming to be autistic. As an autistic individual myself, I honestly relate a lot to her and I understand what she’s saying, but I can also understand how we can come off a certain way even if we don’t mean to.
Edit: so apparently she hadn’t received a clinical diagnosis. Doesn’t really change my observations, but I will say that a lot of autism symptoms/traits can be shared with other disorders, so getting evaluated and ruling out any other disorders is always the better choice. Not sure what her financial situation is like, but it can take months or even years to get evaluated as an adult
She is absolutely a brilliant and talented person. I believe she just communicates in a way that we as a society still aren’t used to. Of course I’m not an expert, just an education major minoring in disability studies and an autistic woman. Hope this doesn’t come off as argumentative!
@@GabrielaHernandez-jm9ip She lied about having autism. Please edit your comment.
I appreciate Unc’s patience because lord Jesus I was over here watching through a screen and was getting upset man 🤣🤣🤣 this woman is absolutely insufferable.
I dont perceive Amanda as being on the spectrum of Autism. She is by far too verbal and expressive. Perhaps ADHD and and Obsessive/Compulsive about expressing how she feels. Down South, we would just say,"she talks too much." She expresses herself and she is always willing to share her perspective. She reminds me of some of the great talk show hosts; Rosey O'Donnell, Oprah Winfrey, Sherry Shephard, Wendy Williams, Joan Rivers, and Tamar Braxton. These are women that people LOVE to hate😂 They enjoy telling their truths.
She lied about it.
When you’re different you must have discipline because you’ll be standing alone most of the time. We love you sis 🫶🏾🌹🌹🌹
People are more attentive to tone than actual truth. Bravo sis!
This is the best succinct description of the awkward dynamics of this interview. Yes. 🎉
Agreed! ESPECIALLY when a woman is speaking. People are not as particular about tone-policing men. Even another woman may give a man more grace if he's passionate vs a woman.
u spittin.
But that's realistic
That about sums it up. Whenever you read critique of her 99.9% of the time it’s rooted in her delivery. Most people either just can’t get past it because society is brainwashed to like the fake or they simply don’t want to get past it. Gives them an excuse to dismiss what she’s saying. Smh.
this was surprisingly a lot better than i'd expected, based on all the things i'd been hearing! i'm just mad she conflated the term hubris with the narcissus myth.
Now they call attitude problems a medical diagnosis??
Since when? 😂
As a teacher, it is ok for children to correct misinformation. You may not like it, but that is the role of the teacher- to teach and learn.

@@spendleton79 what did he need to learn? Outside of Shannon learning how to identify her personality disorder (not autism as that is not a PD) there was nothing profound about what she said. Talking to her is a useless blank mission.

She’s weathering the ish out of Shannon! I’m sure he took a nap and a few days off after dealing with her. She exhausting!!!
So what part did he cut out? I think he did great. She made statements that need to be expounded upon as her experience. Who does she authentically conmect with? She is intelligent and have some thought provoking qualities but it’s alot of me against the world!
The fact that he did the interview speaks volumes to his desire to have dialogue and grow. People will rather criticize him for trying and opening his self up to criticism rather than respect and appreciate his vulnerability. I haven’t seen Amanda on any other platform outside of her own social media accounts. I’m glad she got to tell her story and engage in meaningful dialogue.

Amanda has been on a lot of other podcasts in the past few months but, I agree. I enjoyed the conversation
She's crazy...
Truth is her morning radio show in Houston is so bosss ❤❤❤
In my opinion, Amanda is so self-aware and direct and a segment of the people who strongly don't like her or find her annoying are arguably uncomfortable because they don't have or have not personally reached her level of awareness, confidence, & unapologetic resolve to fight injustice. The mindset is "I can't silence my voice and saying the hard truths because of anyone else's discomfort" and I 100% understand it & support it. I am also appreciate Amanda's candidness and the visibility/representation of someone living on the spectrum.
She is a critical thinker and that’s difficult for a lot of people to practice.
Shannon is being combative. It’s her experience he wasn’t there.
1000% agree.
She can effectively articulate her experience and stand it unapologetically because she's smart and educated, it's a threat to anyone else who can't🤷🏽♀️ it's an offense to those people. Salute Amanda!🔥
I deal with the same things, but somehow I still think her becoming famous and "successful" allowed a certain amount of arrogance that when added with her diagnosis could make her unbearable for a lot of people. In a way that people could easily dismiss her and make the claim that they don't "like" her, I also feel as though she needed to feel this way to become this self aware in a good way.
As someone who's honest, straightforward, and stands on truth...many will not like you, portray you in a negative light, and attack you overall and in professional settings for "going against the grain", being "different", not playing the "game", "politics", etc
Her personality is very draining can't imagine being her friend. She seems like she would constantly have issues with everyone except herself in every scenario she is the victim
Glad Amanda was not letting him dismiss/minimize her experiences/feelings
They wasn’t being dismissed, he was exploring other possibilities grow up
He was simply pointing out that there is possibility that it wasn’t due to racism like she believes everything was due to race
Every example, he replied with “but…”. You will not see this in every one of his interviews
