    Also, you have to be careful when removing that balancer because that timing piece is not actually connected to the crank. It’s the same thing as the balancer on the other side of it so if you’re not careful, it can come off and then you’re doing an entire timing set. Which is a nightmare.

    Your engine risks coming out of time when you remove the crank bolt for a moderate period of time. VW makes a donut hold tool to reinsert the crank bolt. Since you don’t have access to the seal otherwise the play is to replace the entire lower cover which will come with a new gasket.

    • @partsshooter
      @partsshooter  4 года назад

      Common sense would tell you, it's gonna have zero tension partially before"special tool installation", so it's fine for a finite amount of time until it's serviced. This engine still operates perfectly and you see it running after replacement. Why would you even post this comment?
      I honestly think alot of you are dumb

    • @michaeldittmer5065
      @michaeldittmer5065 4 года назад +2

      Hey man, I hear the frustration, but legitimately that is actually an issue with that approach - and the good VW tech channels on here will point out that issue. If your response is just to call your commenters dumb that’s kinda sad, cause it just means you’re talking a thin-skinned approach to people who point out something valid.

      @@partsshooter Wow, he was just pointing something out... and he’s also absolutely right. The gear can get dislodged if left for too long without that donut. Doesn’t take much too knock it out of alignment. The idea of the donut tool is that you limit the chances of the gear popping off by leaving it unsecured for the least amount of time possible. I mean, he said that in the most respectful way possible, and you just jumped down his damn throat.

    There is a lot of vibration on those engines, my other thought could be, the balance shafts may be going bad, and excessive vibration is generated reflected on the lower timing cover making it so slightly vibrate. Is similar to what you are saying about the crank pulley vibrating, but backwards. Or maybe is from chain vibration reflected on the cover, weak cheap metal causing it to vibrate messing up the seal.
    I had a spare lower timing chain cover, IMO, part of the problem is the area around the seal has a lip, and to me, oil collects/bowls up and after a while starts to leak. The only way oil pours out of the seal area is when the lip overfills with oil, but it will always have a bowl of oil in the bottom area. The lip is there to prevent the soil to go through, but if the lower area is dremmel just about right to let oil drain down into the oil pan, oil pump hole.

  • @thebandit5290

    The misfires are probably from the oil leak losing pressure like when you remove the oil cap while its running... I replaced the timing cover and used the seal that came in it and its leaking, running like schitt. I learned to always use the factory style seal.

      The hub at the Harmonic balancer can develop a groove over the years. Seal can leak as a result even after having new seal. Clean area and check recheck.
